Root Huawei P9 - Huawei P9 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I want to root my Huawei P9.
Information about the handy:
EMUI 5.0.1
EVA-L09
B397
CPU: Kirin 955
Bootloader is unlocked.
I tested a lot of things but it still dont work.
I hope, I got help here.
For help to finish, I want to pay a little bit as a bonus

https://theunlockr.com/2016/12/06/root-huawei-p9-p9-plus/ have you tried this?

You have omitted important part, your cust, is it c432 or what. I.e. full name of your build as it shows in About Phone, like EVA-L09c432b397 or what.
Forget advices about rooting P9 Plus (?!), you can easily brick your phone
There is search on XDA, you can find excellent topics about rooting (this one is for SuperSU, there are others for Magisk)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/root-supersu-2-81-emui-5-t3612258
Read the guide at the beginning and posts from last e.g. month at the end (up to date with the latest builds like yours). There is search and you can search through the topic, to find details applicable for your build, apps you need the root for, etc
And post your further questions there - e.g. that topic has 570+ posts, probably tens of experienced hackers who are watching - to the other side topics like this one get opened 5-10 new every day, and chance that somebody who is knowledagbe will spot it and dare to answer (every day sinilar questions are repeted by new users, who will answer to each and every of them, every day) are negligable ;(
PS: The guide above covers only the last part, flashing the correct ZIP for rooting. Before that you need to unlock bootloader and install TWRP for EMUI 5.x - search on XDA to find the guides about

Thank you, it still works now

Flashing ROMs and unlocking bootloader

Hi there, I'm looking to buy a Xiaomi mi5 because of it's amazing value, but I've had a really bad time with chinease manufactures when it comes to unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom to the device. So I wanted to ask other users of the phone: what was your experiences doing this? Did you run into to any major issues with the device?
mainly two situation are possible: real rom or fake rom
In the first situation you will follow the official guides provided by the manufacturer (via update, via recovery, via fastboot) and -done right- you will have the baseline to stay in the miUI or go elsewhere.
The unlock request is done via a webpage (http://en.miui.com/unlock/), very simple, very straightforward; the response takes from a couple of hours to a couple of days or more.
An advice: in the request form put the real reason and do not copy&paste stuff/text from others.
warning: from today till february 6 there, in PRC, is the most important holiday of the year.
The second situation is tricky because depends mainly on what (the F---!) version you have on the device and some are harder to get rid of...
The unlock request will be the same, but you might find yourself battling (hours? days?) with that stubborn fake/seller rom.

Rookie unlocked and rooted demo unit Huawei P10 but is now stuck.

Hello guys,
I bought a demo unit Huawei P10 on accident and now want to flash it with the official stock rom. I unlocked the bootloader already and rooteed the device through adb.
Now i am stuck because i cant find any firmware through firmware finder etc. My serialnumber is VTR-L09C652B101. I am a total rookie so it costed me two days to unlock and root, now i really dont see how i can flash a stock firmware without the demo system app ruins it all. Can anybody help me?
It's possible to rebrand just as normal. However, the Mate 9 script has some known flaws. The thread on 4pda has good version, but I forgot the link.
If you have no experience in Android engineering, FunkyHuawei may help better as they are a paid service with good support.
You can use HWOTA for rebranding, but you have to modify the script.
You need to download a full firmware for your desired version.
My modifying help lines are for VTR-L09C432, which is the standard single sim for Europe. If you wish another model (e.x. VTR-L29C432), just change the lines like you want them.
For more help, you can send me a PM, it's a bit easier. When we found a solution, we can post it here for others.
Hi, did you manage to solve the issue? I guess I might have the same problem...

i try to install xposed to my huawei p10 and my cellphone bricked.

my phone was rooted with oreo emui 8.0.0 and i have try everything to unbrick it
dload method, huawei multitool, fastboot method(in this method my phone flashes system.img and cust.img but when i try to flash recovery and boot img i have error of partition lenght.)
I try for 5 days
if you have one solution please help me
thx
Recovery flash with following command:
"fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk RECOVERY.IMG" - this should be clearly after so many people asking this here.
Boot.img isn't a thing on Oreo anymore, it's now splitted into "kernel.img" and "ramdisk.img".
Don't flash them, it won't help you.
If your phone goes in ERROR mode and TWRP won't boot and you tried everything available here, then the only working solution for you seems to be DC Phoenix.
I don't like to make promotion for this tool, because it costs money - and because of the stupid users they should've make mode money in the last two months than in the last two years.
For the future: Use Google or your favorite search engine before you flash something else than stock firmware!
Especially Xposed is known for slow updates when a new Android version was released.
Here, on XDA, you should've found out, what's working and what's not.
Sorry for being a bit rude, but I get many PMs and read many post from guys like you and it's not only annyoing, it's frustrating to tell them, that they have to pay for fixing their phones since Android has the fame for being "an open system".
Because of stupid users or because your tutorial for Oreo manual update stated to search L29C432 ROM only?
Of course, one blame is for Huawei for making different phones with the almost the same model numbers, and other blame for us "stupid users" for not thinking, that there are different phone with same model numbers.
At first I did not blame you, it was my decision to update manually. But now, when you call us "stupid users" when at first your tutorial stated to search only for "L29C432" firmware not "VTR-L29C432", like your post is edited now, i call you a stupid tutorial maker.

Well don't involve me in "blame games"! We're all trying to do our best, so we should stop trying to find fault with each other and help those who have gotten into difficulty for whatever reason. There are things that may be obvious to us but to others, everything is difficult to understand and not obvious at all.

Huawei P10 HardBrick

Hello fellow members of the forum, first of all forgive my nefarious English. I have never posted in this forum although I have read it a lot, but I have a problem, a few months ago I tried to pass my Huawei P10 L09 to DualSim and before touching the OEMInfo or anything else in danger, I changed the signature to another original by means of TWRP following a tutorial, I remember from this forum or HTCManía, I do not remember right now. The rom was installed and it did not turn on again, neither in fastboot nor in erecoverý nor in TWRP, the computer detects it as "USB SER".
I have read the payment program "DC-Unlock" and I do not know if it will get me the P10 of this long lethargy in which it is submerged ...
I beg you help. Thanks for everything!

OS build is ancient, Play Store is missing and Google Play Services isn't working. What should I do?

My OS build is B168 running EMUI 4.1 and Android 6.0. System updater says I'm up-to-date but looking at this forum... it would appear that I'm actually not. I wish to do something about this but I have never rooted an Android phone in my life, much less flash a new OS if that is what I'll have to do.
Thankfully this isn't too pressing of a matter, since I've used my phone without problem since ~2018 in that state.
What IS a big problem though is that earlier in March, my Play Store decided to go adios and disappear just like that. The Google Play Services also seemed to have stopped working as well and have crippled my phone because of that.
I'm in the process of moving into a secondhand LG G5 SE but I've been finding out that it's lacking in areas that matters to me (also because it's a bit more beat-up than my Huawei), so I'm hoping to salvage this Huawei P9 of mine if possible.

Sorry but there is no use of declaring only b168. Neither you or anybody else can help you upgrading based on just that.
You need to declare the full name of your firnware, as listed in Settings/About ( hence including the info is it L09 or L19 and the dust part)
But please read the other recent (similar) posts - all also about users who didn't mind to upgrade their firmwares during the last 3-4 years when P9 was (properly) supported.
Now, unfortunately, Huawei removed all the old firmwares from their servers and there are no ways now to upgrade the regular/usual/easy way (OTA).
Only by finding (that's the hardest part now) and flashing by DLOAD the appropriate FullOTA-PV-MV firmware for your cust.
Or to unlock Bootloader and to rebrand to c432 and then again to find (easier for c432 cust) and flash the Nougat firmware
Before going to that journey, you will need to get familiar (google, read, learn) about cust, dload, rebranding, unkocking Bootloader, Recovery, eRecovery, TWRP, etc - by making a wrong move you can easily brick your phone and then even the deaper knowledge and understanding is needed to recover
On the other side, if that old MM was still good for you, you can still download and install practically all apps from APKMirror - hence, without the need for Google Play app
Maybe you will first just want to give your MM a fresh start - by factory resetting (through the Settings or your existing, stock Recovery or eRecovery) - but before Factory resetting make sure to backup your data (like photos) to PC, backup chats in WhatsApp, backup your phonebook to Google, etc.
I.e., by Factory resetting you should recover to the old ancient, from the time of releasing your firmware) GooglenPlay Services, but then you should better disable automatic updates in Google Play to prevent it to happen again

Okay, I'm reading up on those, it's pretty daunting considering the risk. But I'm still not sure what "cust", "MM" and "rebranding" means, I've tried but Google hasn't been very helpful to me in these.

This is the hard part. Because Google Play Services doesn't work anymore, I can't backup my data to Drive as it'll instantly crash or simply say that I need Google Play Services for it to work. The Play Store itself isn't that big of a problem since - as you said - I can just grab my apps from APKMirror and the like.
As it currently stands, I'm unable to backup my data from LINE and WhatsApp. For WA though it'd seem I can just copy the backup folder to a new device and restore it from there. Not too sure about LINE yet, but this is probably not the appropriate place to ask about it.

Rebranding means changing the cust. Your cust is c900 (from your firmware name) and that is some kind of dead-end, even when P9 was properly supported by Huawei and users with other custs were receiving OTA, those on c900 remained blocked to MM.
Therefore, to upgrade, you need to rebrand aka change your cust to c432 (all EU, most furmwares, easiest to find)

Howerver, there will be still hard to find c432 firmwares for your L29 (dual SIM with more RAM).
But for the beginning, read from above to understand what would you need to do
Thank you, I've read up on those links and I think I got the general gist of what I must do (though the Spanish link does scare me a little for possible mistranslation). But goodness gracious you were right about difficulty in finding firmware for my L29. I've searched for almost 3 hours and all links point me to the now-defunct official link from Huawei themselves. I've also searched this forum but it would seem that most people have about the same luck as I did (or were outdated).
Say, should push come to shove... could I uh, rebrand my L29 into L19 or L09? If I could, what would I be losing?

L09 is single SIM with 3/32 GB RAM and with NFC.
L19 is dual SIM with 3/32 GB RAM and without NFC.
L29 is dual SIM with 4/64 GB RAM and without NFC.
Check here, you can select L09, L19 or L29:
Huawei P9 - Full phone specifications
www.gsmarena.com
By rebranding, you cannot 'make' more RAM, second SIM or NFC (I played with, rebranded L09 to L19: lost NFC but wasn't able to make second SIM. Rebranded back to L09 without problems)
Btw, Chrome translates pretty good for me (I always translate to English although not my language), from Spanish, German, French.
Long time ago I even installed a custom ROM to tablet by translating from Russian 4pda. Once studied something from Japaneese

...Well, this is strange. My phone clearly says L29 but I only have 3/32GB RAM and storage. It seems to not have NFC but does have dual SIM (although I only ever use a slot, the other hybrid slot I use for microSD). Is it possible that my phone has somehow been flashed before? This is a hand-me-down phone and I haven't tampered with it since I got it.
So I guess it'd be safe to downgrade to L19?

Wow, I guess it did have came a long way since. Though as with any machine translation, I prefer to be safe and re-examine things from top to bottom, especially when I have an otherwise perfectly good phone in the line. For the most part I get what the guide is trying to say though!

If it shows two IMEIs, then it's defintely dual SIM
L29 was relatively rare, hence it was maybe originally L19 (IMO, with L29 ROM, it should show all the RAM if it was really L29)
You can try the followimg fastboot commands (you will need to install e.g. Minimal ADB and Fastboot to your PC and to enable ADB debugging from the hidden Developer menu - study the Spanish guide )
It starts from ADB (hence from Android), then reboots to fastboot and finally back to Android (on PAUSE you have to kick Enter):
Code:
adb wait-for-device devices
PAUSE
adb reboot-bootloader
PAUSE
fastboot devices
PAUSE
fastboot oem get-bootinfo
PAUSE
fastboot oem get-psid
PAUSE
fastboot oem get_hwnff_ver
PAUSE
fastboot oem hwdog certify begin
PAUSE
fastboot getvar dongle_info
PAUSE
fastboot oem get-product-model
PAUSE
fastboot oem get-build-number
PAUSE
fastboot oem oeminforead-SYSTEM_VERSION
PAUSE
fastboot getvar vendorcountry
PAUSE
REM fastboot getvar rescue_enter_recovery
PAUSE
fastboot reboot
You can find some firmwares here (only a few but it's a reliable site):
https://androidhost.ru/search.html
Type in e.g. eva-l19 and Search (for eva-l29 they have nothing)
You can find more from the following but they have so many files, you never know what they really are.
Look at E series for EVA:
https://support.halabtech.com/index.php?a=downloads&b=folder&id=14393
To download you will probably need to register
