I have problems with this via web tabs, but Netflix puts out 5.1 just fine.
I have an old receiver that doesn't understand anything newer than regular 5.1 AC3/DD/DTS. My components are connected by optical via a monoprice HDMI switch (MD-415arc).
I have to set my Bluray, Hopper and Xbox 360 all to "Dolby Digital 5.1" (or similar) to achieve 5.1 surround, which works fine.
I seem to only be able to get 2.1 PCM out of the chromecast, and I'm wondering if that's because the only 5.1 output formats are AAC and DD+/E-AC3.
Can anyone confirm whether this is the case? Any inexpensive means to convert e-ac3 to old ac3?
I have a brand new Marantz NR1604 AVR and I only get 2 channels from my Chromecast when connected to an HDMI port on the receiver. Doesn't seem to matter what the source is. Also, when playing MKV movie files from my server thru Chrome/Chromcast, the commentary track is played by default instead of the normal soundtrack. Anyway to change the audio track when playing thru Chrome?

My understanding is that HDMI audio may be reduced to the lowest common denominator in the device chain. Might need to disable TV's ARC or something (lots of TVs only return 2 channel PCM audio)...I think.
What format is the audio track in your MKV? I think the chrometab mirroring only supports 2ch aac.

Thanks for the reply. I am connecting the Chromecast using the Marantz AVR HDMI input, not the tv. Most of my MKV files use DTS. You may be right about the chrometab mirroring only supporting 2ch aac. However, Netflix should have surround audio but I only get 2 channel. I also tried the Chromecast on my Onkyo AVR with the same result.
Is there some setting I am missing in the Chromecast?

I think there's supposed to be a way to select audio streams in the Netflix app. Maybe only the stereo stream is selected?

I have the same thing with my NR1602. Doesn't let me select anything but stereo from the netflix app. I thought I got it to play 5.1 at least once, but maybe I am wrong.
As a little test. I had my whole system powered up and ready to go and I powered cycle chromecast thinking maybe it was detecting the TV's stereo settings when the AVR was off (due to passthrough), but it still only gave me stereo options in chromecast.
edit: just tried from the chromecast chrome extension/plugin in chrome browser.. same thing.
edit2: Nevermind. It works fine I wasn't playing movies that had 5.1.

hmmm....i played an random movie, "Cabin in the Woods". Stereo only. Just tried "The Avengers" too, stereo only. Surely those movies would be streamed in 5.1. And there were no audio selections. My internet connection is also fast and stable.
hmmmmm.....just tried my Roku with Netflix, no 5.1 there either. Odd. Could this be a router problem? My Roku and AVR are both connected to my router via Ethernet. I try to avoid wireless when possible although I know the Chromecast uses wifi. Also, my WDLive plays DD and DTS fine from my server.
As a side note, the Dolby Pro Logic II on my Marantz actually does a decent job with surround, but this is simulated and isn't quite up to true 5.1

In the Roku settings, you choose stereo or 5.1. This could be why you didn't get 5.1 on your Roku.
The Roku streams my MKV files in 5.1 thru the Plex app.

Plex MKV 5.1 works fine for me as well, as Roku will pass through the AC3/DTS streams. I know that Roku (like Chromecast) streams Netflix 5.1 as DD+. Certainly seems like your AVR should be up to the task of decoding DD+. If you're not even being given the option of 5.1 audio in the app...I dunno, maybe that's a network/bandwidth issue (does Netflix test the bandwidth when it loads or something?). Otherwise I'd start hunting around the settings for your AVR.

Well, the receiver decodes DD and DTS automatically from other sources, so I don't think it's in the settings. And my internet speed tests at 18+ Mbps consistently which is more than enough for streaming Netfilx.

WTF?!?! I solved the problem. The test movie I have been using is "The Avengers". Well, evidently, on Netflix, this movie is streamed in stereo only!! Seriously??!! For such a blockbuster movie? Wow! Anyway. So I picked a random movie, "Apartment 143", and boom, DD+!! WTF?
Well, I feel pretty stupid now, but am glad to have resolved the issue. Still blows my mind that such a blockbuster like "The Avengers" is only streamed in stereo.
So, thanks to those who replied and hopefully my stupidity will benefit others.

My surround sound is working great in every casting method(local media, Netflix, Youtube, etc..). Everything sounds great so far...so far, so good!
How do you get surround sound from local media? Are you playing from tab in chrome? I didn't think chromecast could handle DD/DTS. Or is it passing along the audio streams so they get all the way to your receiver?

I have my CC plugged into my Vizio E390-A1 then the audio out through the optical out I to my receiver. Is it possible my receiver is too old and isn't able to decode the surround audio from Netflix? I made sure the audio out in the TV menu has Dolby Digital selected instead of PCM. Still nothing.

You have to have high quality stream selected in the Netflix menu. Log in on a PC, ts there somewhere.

99% of TVs will NOT pass 5.1 from hdmi sources. Usually you will only get 5.1 over toslink from the internal tuner. Certain TVs will do it, but its a huge exception to the rule. You need to plug directly into a receiver, or what I do is use a HDMI switch with a toslink output that can force 5.1. Its pretty snazzy, has ARC so I even get 5.1 audio from the tv tuner with one hdmi cable and one optical cable. Box isnt cheap though, something like $80 on monoprice.

I've only been using the Chromecast for a day, but it seems the audio and video are getting out of sync after a while and the only way to get it back is to reboot it.

Note that A/V sync drift can come from various sources:
In the source - this drift is actually present in the source. If you start playback, pause, then resume, it will still be out of sync, and will be out of sync by the same amount (unless introduced drift is also occurring). Jumping forward/back will also have things out of sync, though the amount might vary depending on the other factors below.
Encoding - since YouTube and other streaming services usually have to encode the source video to their streaming format, an error in the encoding can cause sync drift. Essentially it's the same problem as "In the source" except viewing the original source won't show the drift, because only the encoded versions have it. It's not an error per-se, but often times streaming encoding will not re-sync A/V mid-stream very often, which can lead to things being out of sync if you jump forward/back in the content rather than playing it all the way straight-through.
Introduced during playback - this drift is introduced by the playback or streaming, usually by the player, sometimes caused by audio resampling or other processing. The original source is in sync on the source and on my Roku and TiVo. If I reboot the Chromecast, the video and audio are in sync. It seems after you watch it for a while, the audio and video drift slightly out of sync. Switching between sources (YouTube vs Netflix) or stopping and starting the video does not bring it back into sync. Only a reboot corrects the issue.

Interesting. Definitely sounds like it's something to do with Chromecast's decoding.
You aren't using any sort of audio breakout or external stereo, are you?
Also, what firmware build is your Chromecast on? (Check the Chromecast app)

I am on 14651.
In my setup the TV outputs to a stereo via toslink. My TV is rather old, I bought it in 2008. But it works great and has HDMI, so there's no need to upgrade.

I have a TV of near the same vintage, just before Sony started supporting video over DLNA.
The only other troubleshooting step I can think of it to see if there's a difference between using the TV speakers and your external. I doubt there will be a difference, but there's a tiny possibility that perhaps there are too many samples being output somewhere, which would introduce increasing drift.

I really like the Chromecast. Once is does Plex, the Roku may be up on eBay.

After updating to 14651 I met the same problem with you. But after a factory reset it works well now. I suggest you to do a factory reset and maybe it will work find like mine.
OOS can happen on the decoding side usually when the Video is at too high a bitrate for the device to handle....
The Audio takes nothing to decode but the higher the bitrate the longer it takes to decode and display the video.
Therefore the Audio comes ON TIME but the video gets delayed leaving you out of sync.
Does the audio PRECEDE the Video? (this is the most common form of OOS you see on the backend)
It usually only happens on the Encoding side when the Audio and Video take two different paths to the encoder.
Thats about the only time you might see Audio delayed compared to Video.
It is possible that the decoding device can get lost or face some memory condition that would cause this but usually it's because it attempted to decode some high Bitrate video in the first place.

Yesterday I bought my chromecast and I've set it up without problems, but I noticed the sound played through the chromecast is just a little bit garbled and worst of all, it's pitched like a semi-half tone down. For movies and youtube this'll won't be a problem, but I play the guitar and when music is played, it's horribly out of tune.
I couldn't find anything on the internet as a solution. Does anyone encounter the same problem?

Its with all content; whether its youtube, or casting my whole android screen, google music, I even tried it casting a youtube tab from chrome on my notebook. All same results.. Lower pitched sound and a little bit chopped.
But I sure do wanna try out everything. How can I find out wheter there is a dolby track?

If it is happening on everything then it is unlikely what I suspected it was...Especially if it happens on You Tube as well...
It could be a bad HDMI network connection between the CCast and the TV....
So try this....
1 - Try another input on the TV
2 - Try the CCast on a different TV and see if it still happens
If #1 solves it then it's that one TV Input, You can check the audio setting for that input but the CCast should communicate all of that and send the proper signal. (try re-plugging into the original input and see if the problem goes away)
If #2 has the same problem then it's a lemon CCast and you might need a replacement.

In a clear moment #1 has already come to mind, so tried another hdmi input, same results.. I don't have another hdmi tv before wednesday.. Will try it then and will post my results..
I just tried my chromecast on another tv and it worked normally, so it was my hdtv.
I checked the internet and there was an update. Updated and my chromecast works perfectly now!

HDMI is really a network so any small issues and it falls apart.
Hello! Just seeing if you guys can test this out for me and report back your findings.
Have snapchat open
Have music playing on your phone via any source but connected to your car via the 3.5mm jack. (I'm using google play music specifically)
Record a full video and then unplug your aux cable to see if your video has sound or not.
I do a lot of driving through pretty scenic areas and have a handful of people who enjoy watching my videos because of the places I drive. However I've noticed that when I'm playing music via the aux jack my videos have no sound. This is the first Android device I've had does this and what worries me is that it's a hardware issue and not a software issue. The reason I suspect that is because the only other devices I know that can't do this are ios devices before the iPhone 7. If you guys would be willing to test this out I'd appreciate it. I've reinstalled snapchat and checked the permissions and can't seem to find the underlying issue. Also searching for the issue with the note 8 or the s8/+ yields no results. Thanks.

Check if the 3,5 plug you are using has two or 3 rings or bands, if so, means that the cable is also passing the mic to your stereo, thats the reason you have no audio captured by the mic

What is your car?
This doesn't seem to be limited to the P20 Pro. I can confirm the issue on the Mate 10 Pro after the EMUI9 (European) upgrade. Bluetooth worked flawlessly before, even under heavy load (Google Maps navigation and Torque Pro in split screen mode, Spotify in background) with two bluetooth devices (Torque adapter and JVC car radio) connected.
Since the update I am experiencing intermittent stutter with any bluetooth audio device. As soon as I connect the Torque adapter (bluetooth serial protocol) the stutter on the audio output becomes unbearable. I get about 10 seconds of clear sound, then 5-8 seconds of stutter. Re-pairing didn't help.

I've tried several Bluetooth devices, ranging far and wide and with a large variety of different codecs being used. Re-pairing doesn't help, factory resetting doesn't help. I suspect it's a driver related issue.

Yeah, WiFi is never enabled while I'm driving. My dash cam gives off a WiFi connection with no Internet access.
I did read that fixed a similar issue on an other Huawei device, thanks for the tip.
got updated to Pie last night, and I listened to Spotify on my way to work this morning. I noticed the audio is interrupted (for about half a second) two or three times within 45 mins. I thought it is just the Spotify streaming issue. Hmm .. maybe it is this issue.

You can try other apps。You can see whether it's the problem of Bluetooth headset or the problem of App.
It only appears to be LDAC in my case (when using my Sony WH-1000XM3's). If I drop the codec down, the aborations don't manifest for me. Turning the screen on by way of power button makes the audio cut out for 100ms or less, but seems to indicate it's processor load that's causing it (across any audio app, like Spotify, Tidal, PocketCasts, YouTube).
Using anything lower than LDAC seems to be fine for me though (like when I'm using my Samsung Gear IconX 2018's).
I only updated to EMUI 9 on my P20 Pro yesterday and identified this issue within 5 minutes, so it doesn't bode well for Huawei's testing.

So, after having contacted Huawei, they initially advised me to wipe the cache partition however this didn't address the issue. They then apologetically recommended a full reset. Having now done this the Bluetooth audio issues I was experiencing appear to have been resolved.
Whether they'll return with use of the phone I have no idea, but LDAC and all other codes are working brilliantly now.
Hope that helps anyone having the same probs.
I have exactly same Issue, doesn't matter aptx ldac SBC, with some devices works fine with others horrible... It's a lot of work to reset to factory settings and reinstall all the apps and settings though
Any one know if there's a fix for this yet?
I've tried wiping the device and still has issues.
I have same issue w p20 pro EMUI 10.0.0.161 CLT-L29 model. Has earlier p20 pro china version L100? And no issues.
I'm using BT Shure SE846 and they are studdering. App notwithstanding. My cheap car BT radio jig works flawlessly. Huawei said I need to change mb. (For $150 since out of warranty)
