Keep in mind that if you root you will lose all Samsung Knox Related Apps.
Also no more OTA, so you need to wait for future custom rom updates, if you root.

If you don't want to use any of the custom roms but just want root, then yes you should update to Oreo OTA first.
But if you want to use any of the custom roms, then you could just root now and flash a new Oreo build custom rom.
Just remember that when Samsung will push Android P in about 1 year from now you won't be able to get that update OTA, because you rooted the phone, by that time you will have to flash it manually, or use any of the custom roms.

if im not mistaken once your bootloader is unlocked you cant receive OTAs anymore. At that point what you can do is manually flash the new OTA.
I'm not sure if its that simple though, I've never done it like that, just custom roms.

As long as you have stock everything, besides the root of course, you can sideload ota updates through adb. i sideloaded kitkat when it came out.
By stock I assume you are running a Sense One and not a legit GPE?
When you unlock the bootloader on Sense it wipes a few apk files (no clue why, seems idiotic) and thus OTA will be broken as the expected APK will not be present.
So you have to unlock bootloader. install recovery, flash super SU. then restore missing apk files and then flash back stock recovery. A bit of work but it can be done. here's a thread about it.

Thanks for the reply guys.. Yeah, it's a bit annoying why can't have ota after rooting. I just needed root and nothing else... Hmmm.. :banghead:

I just received an S5 AT&T with ND3 base. The phone is constantly asking me to update but I'm not sure what base will be added. If I take the OTA update will I lose root and if so, will I be able to reroot the device? Or, do I just ignore any OTA updates altogether. I remember being aware of taking OTA updates on my Note II. I'm on a stock odexed factory rom with root only and xposed. Thanks!

If you take the NG3 Update it will break root.
That being said if you want the latest ATT firmware update use this method it's quite easy to do.

Yes you will get, but no they wont install UNTIL you remove root
And, you need the stock recovery as well + unroot.
I need to install stock firmware and It's deleted all my data?
Do i also need to have locked bootloader? Thanks.
Er, if you have a custom ROM, you might get the notification, but the install will almost surely fail; I wouldn't even try...even if it somehow installs, it'll probably just wreck your ROM.
But, er, OTA updates (if you are on stock already) don't wipe any data. But, if you are on a custom ROM and you want to get the OTA update, you'll need to flash back to stock and you should factory reset when switching ROMs (custom -> stock).
Locked or unlocked bootloader: it doesn't matter. I have an unlocked bootloader and I received the 5.0.2 update no problem.
Hey I really want to get a Droid Turbo and I'm aware it just recieved root. I was wondering if anyone knows if the phone will be able to update to Lollipop with root. I just dont want to buy the phone now, root it and then not be able to update to Lollipop. Thanks
You can just flash stock then take the OTA when it comes.

We don't know that yet as lollipop isn't out yet. As long as moto doesn't patch the mofo system image flash method, we will still be able to cook up a lollipop image with root.
No one knows yet if you take the OTA for Lollipop when that day comes, root will stay or not, or be disabled, or stay enabled. We gotta stay on 4.4.4 until it's confirmed.

Theoretically, even if this method doesn't work for Lollipop, we should still be able to upgrade to Lollipop with root. Given the image files for the new update, we should be able to fastboot flash each individual partition and then mofo the a 5.1 rooted system image. We shouldn't have trouble flashing the correctly signed portions of the update that we need to allow us to maintain a fully matching system.

You cannot flash the kernel...
You cannot flash custom roms or any other android version because you CAN ONLY FLASH SYSTEM not kernel, not aboot, not bootloader, nothing. End of thread. 99% of this forums wouldnt exist if people just read and/or searched instead of starting a new thread for every thought they have.
topic. thanks!
No. Not by accepting an OTA update. You'll have to update and re root.
what about getting rid of the update notification? is it possible to get rid of it?

I don't even get the update when I check since it has been modified in an "unauthorized way"
You can update via odin. Not through an OTA. Root has still not been written for 5.1.1, so if you want to keep root, don't update.

Dont Update!!!!!!! Not only do you lose root BUT you also lose your unlocked bootloader and you cant flash custom recoveries anymore until someone comes up with a method and you can't downgrade.

The bootloader is still unlocked. It's custom recoveries like TWRP that need to be updated to work in conjunction with the new bootloader. That's all.
