topic. thanks!
No. Not by accepting an OTA update. You'll have to update and re root.
what about getting rid of the update notification? is it possible to get rid of it?

Yes you can. Install ota rootkeeper from playstore.

I don't even get the update when I check since it has been modified in an "unauthorized way"
You can update via odin. Not through an OTA. Root has still not been written for 5.1.1, so if you want to keep root, don't update.

Dont Update!!!!!!! Not only do you lose root BUT you also lose your unlocked bootloader and you cant flash custom recoveries anymore until someone comes up with a method and you can't downgrade.

The bootloader is still unlocked. It's custom recoveries like TWRP that need to be updated to work in conjunction with the new bootloader. That's all.

you're rooted trying to do an OTA?
once you root, accepting an OTA can mess up your phone or make you lose root.

don't flash back to it in twrp. use rsdlite or manually flash it with fastboot commands. if you actually flashed the full ota and didn't have root or twrp anymore then you would be able to take the OTA no problem.

Oddly I've done that even before I put twrp on my phone I used mfastboot with the stock IMG I got from moto. I did the update right when I got the phone and it did what I described so I thought I for find a something where I could flash stock to my phone by using twrp.
Download Motorola device manager. It should automatically restore the software to stock 4.4.
http://d1tsx1og7dz7v4.cloudfront.net/MotorolaDeviceManager_2.4.5.exe
thx for the help i had to mfastboot 4.4
This is your easiest option. All you need to do is run this utility. It will install drivers, download firmware, and flash back to stock. I used it earlier, and it's brilliant.
Even if you've already solved your problem, I highly recommend saving this for later use.

How big is that OTA update?
Try, if you can flash it it could work and you could actually preserve root, maybe even recovery but in 99% of cases you'll get error.
OTA update can't be flashed on rooted device (but, as I said, there were few times it actually worked if it's small, few mb update)
But this is update from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 so I doubt it'll work.

OTA updates with root are fine, but you may well lose root, just as you would flashing a FTF or updating via Pccompanion.
The issue with OTA updates is if you have an unlocked bootloader.

That's not correct mate.
Try to downgrade, root and install recovery then try to update via OTA - you'll fail.
Only one or two OTA updates worked on rooted Z1.
I have rooted Z1 with locked bootloader and OTA will always said - error while trying to flash, update your device through pc companion.
I'm 100% certain...

It's 154.5 Mb, my bootloader is still locked only my device is rooted so I will go ahead give it a try and see what happens if it fails or I lose the root I can again downgrade and root right?
Yes, but you can also just root the FW anyway

If you want to update, then download FTF. You will loose root. Or use NUTS pre rooted rom. If you want to root yourself, look over to cross development and use easy root tool v8. Then also download nuts xzdual for locked boot.

I don't think so, however, if you made any changes to your /system directory the OTA will probably fail.

Really? Try scanning threads in this general section. The returning to stock thread always is hovering near the top.
And questions go in the Q&A section.

It depends on which model you have. If you have a model with an unlockable bootloader, you can just re-root when you're done in the same way as you did initially. If you used an exploit on a locked (AT&T/Verizon/Republic) model to get root, it's pretty much guaranteed that you won't be able to get root after the update, and I wouldn't count on another exploit showing up anytime soon, if ever.
You can flash OTA updates while rooted, as long as nothing else is modified or missing from /system and you don't have custom recovery. The update won't remove the su binary either, but permissions will be messed up so it will seem like you're unrooted after you restart.

hey can i use temporary unroot option in supersu for the ota??
Can someone post a link to the stock recovery.img? all links i find seem to be dead. VZW standard edition.
Hi guys !
I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my device, and i don't know if i can upgrade my Nexus 6 by ota (received this morning on the phone) without brick it.
Is it dangerous?
Thank you
EDIT : I'm on stock Lollipop 5.0.1
Unlocked is fine. If you have root or any other system mods, you'll need to remove them.
Oh thanks for the quick answer
So if I unroot it with Nexus Root Toolkit it will be ok?

Nexus toolkit doesn't unroot. It reflashes the entire phone which also means root disappears. If you're going to do that, no point taking the ota. Just flash full update.
You can indoor via the SuperSU app.
Oh ok I just saw that.
So if I unroot via SuperSU it's ok i can install?

As long as you do the full unroot and made no other modifications. Oh and everything must be 100% stock, including recovery
I've installed TWRP...
So, what is the best way for me to install 5.1 without losing my data?

download the factory image that you want to update to.
extract the system.img, boot.img and radio.img
Fastboot flash them.
You could also flash the bootloader if you want though I dont see any point.
Ok, thank you for your quick answers
I know it can be done, as long as you don't OTA after. If I were to downgrade to 4.4.4 or 5.0.2 with 5.1 bootloader, would that offer a software method to root and unlock or no?
Edit: Welp, I answered my own question... I can't even flash anything because of sig checks.

The bootloader can not be downgraded. That would cause a brick. I'm looking for a way to downgrade the system/boot images to 4.4.4 so I could root to get an unlock on the bootloader via sunshine.

You can at least try using Kingroot to root the device for now, and wait till Sunshine is compatible with Lollipop.
With "mofo" you can flash firmwares to the phone on a locked bootloader, I wonder if there is a way to flash just system.img using mofo. Maybe ask that at their thread.

Mofo does not work with 5.1 bootloader and kingroot does not work with 5.1. Sunshine is updated to unlock so long as you have root but I cannot find root method for 5.1.
Edit: Okay, so I'm seeing that some people HAVE downgraded their system image but eventually had a brick from OTA flashing BL. How do you downgrade the system image? If I can get to 4.4.4, I can root and unlock and go back to 5.1.
