'Moisture detected' followed by reboot - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi all,
I've been having some reboot issues on my phone after I installed XEF Oreo.
From what I recall it was fine on BTU but whenever I get a 'moisture is detected' message it'll reboot itself displaying the Samsung logo. It will continue to do this a few times randomly every few minutes then stop, occasionally a few hours later throughout the day I'll get a random reboot.
I'm pretty sure there is no water in the device as it's not warm at all, battery life is fine (suggesting there is no short circuit inside) and the reboots are software controlled reboots, not hard 'crash/ black screen restarts'.
Has anyone else experienced this at all? I'm a bit reluctant to take it to Samsung as I recall they just charge you if they find out their product has failed due to crap water sealing.
Thanks
Additional info:
- Model # SM-N950F
- Never been rooted
- Phone has been in water maybe twice since it was released and I got it, only submerged in a sink, no high pressure stuff
- I've not restored from any backups
- I've not disabled anything
- Oreo was a clean flash, wipe, start from scratch install
- Phone has never been in a case but I look after my devices, few tiny scratches on the back as to be expected, never been dropped, no damage etc

the moisture detected problem is a known issue ans nothing to do with Oreo, it also happens on phones that have never been near water (happened on my first Note 8)
best option is to do a backup first and then re-flash the phone using Odin

Is the restart problem known as well? I know the moisture is relatively known on the S8/S8+ etc but that's just a moisture message displaying all the time, I couldn't find anything on reboots?

Same thing for me every time I wash my phone.
Reboot on moisture detection.
IMHO that's just a bug, let's wait for a fix.

I have seen some reports on random reboot but not a lot, I would just do... backup-factory reset-reflash then it can't really be done cleaner, it's an annoying thing to have to do but sometimes it is just the way to go

I got it too after Oreo update. Phone has never been in water. Just used a hairdryer for 30 sec and it dissappeared.

It's such an annoying bug. I hope it's fixed soon.

Another fix is to plug in phone then power off while still charging....wait for the phone off charging animation and then reboot the phone (still plugged in).
Message should be gone now.

Just complete April's update ...CRD2
"Moisture reboot" still exist.

Try cleaning the port with alcohol & a brush, then blow out with compressed air. Also check for signs of corrosion. It probably detects a short or resistance for the moisture error. Even just dust can cause a change of resistance across pins.
I've never had this moisture error & reboot on my Note 8. I have encountered the moisture error but it was due to a specific usb-c to micro usb adapter & using a micro usb card reader. My Note 5 started to get corrosion/oxidation on the usb port to the point where it wouldn't charge anymore. Had to scrape off the corrosion with a dental pick & it started working fine again. On my Note 8 I now have plugs on my usb-c & headphone jack, I rarely use them anyway.

Moisture can be collected by condensation, if the enviroment is cold, as in air conditioned enviroments, and you take the device outside, condensation forms on all surfaces, including the usb port

I did a factory reset and Its been about a week, Haven't had any reboots since

Update:
I've since factory formatted, gone into recovery, cleared cache, wiped device, no change.
Flashed latest XEU (for my region) and the same issue persists. It's fine in water then moisture detected pops on the screen, followed by a reboot.
Device behaves fine apart from that, pins on charger look fine, no loss of battery, nothing has stopped working, just this stupid motion detected + reboots.
This is really annoying me now!

I lied in the above statement. Things were fine for about a week and then I'm getting random reboots again. What a pain

My problems started after the oreo update. When the phone gets wet and the " moisture detected" notification comes up the phone starts to reboot randomly.
Last week i did a factory reset and the problem is still here.
I hope there is a solution for this problem because it's starts to annoy me.

Samsung know about the issue
My galaxy note 8 kept saying moisture detected and would not turn on once it ran out of battery as it would not charge due to moisture detected. Took 2 days of continually reseting and then trying to insert charger. Which eventually worked.
Samsung UK said it was 2 different issues and sent phone off to have mother board replaced. That was about 3 months ago.
I now have moisture detected followed by reboot issue.
I will be going back to the store and be demanding a brand new replacement handset.
A near £1000 phone should not have these issues and it does not give me confidence in Samsung going forward

My Note8 was moistured many times in the swimming pool.
There was NO reboot issue when it was on Android Nougat (7). Just warning and "drop" icon?. When the usb port dryed, ? just disappears.
After it was updated to Android Oreo (8) and water ? detected, warning shown and phone restarts by itsef. The phone works perfect and no issues even in the swimming pool. After I dry it, so no more moisture, the phone reboots itself once again. Also no issues after that.
It was new firmware update (April) and reboots still happens when ? detected and dryed.
So I truly believe that it is software bug ? and hope it will be fixed in May's update.
P. P.
For people with moistured usb port and low battery - wireless charging works always even when phone is off/empty!

Same problem here but I've noticed that it only happens using the Samsung white fast charge socket, when I plug it into an old generic USB plug, it's fine. So I'm thinking it could be an issue with the fast charging adapter? I've tried disabling the option in the settings menu to no avail.

Update:
If the phone is in "Ultra Power Save" mode, the moisture detection do NOT restart the phone.
So it is SOFTWARE BUG for sure!

I get this exact issue with certain custom roms.
Weta rom was the only one not causing it.

Dead

Hello,
Yesterday my Diamond had died I think
It was frozen and I did a soft reset, screen stays black and nothing happend anymore.
Pulled out the battery, put it back in, and try to turn it back on. It vibrates after a few seconds but the screen stays black.
every help would be great!
Greetings!
Michiel
It might be low on battery so have you tried recharging it?
when i connect it to the power cable nothing happens, the enter button isn't lighting up.
when i connect it to my pc I can browse to the internal storage normally, but it won't charge the battery.
now I'm really confused...
Take out your battery and sim card and leave it out for about 20 minutes and then put it back. During this time, also have your device plugged in (without the battery).
Reflash Everthing
I've pulled out the battery + sim for more than 30 minutes, reloaded the official HTC rom and still the screen is black.
It starts up, vibrates, makes the start sound but the screen remans black.
Now I want to put the orginal HTC SPL back on it, but it doesn't completes the procedure.
Anyone? thnx again!
I got exactly same problem
this has happened to me twice during the past year. the screen was black, although it did vibrate when I turned it on. both times it fixed by itself overnight, very strange.
what I saw is that both times it happened after a long ride with the car, I suspected that due to the prolonged exposure to air conditioning, when I took it out it condensed on the warm motherboard (it was used as a GPS) and some shortcircuit occured.
Unfortunately, 3 weeks ago, again after a long trip with the car, when I took it out it 'died' in 5 minutes (with 100% battery), did not even vibrate anymore when powered on, and never woke up eversince. It is now in service since the 15th of August, with a status on the website of the official HTC service company in Romania (Cirma Electronics) of: "waiting for spare parts" for 5 days...
My guess is that either the MB or the screen fried because of a design issue which caused the condensed vapors to form on some contacts inside...
It sounds as if the device is 100% operational with the exception that the LCD is out. Correct? Or, have you experienced other problems? Try powering up you Diam, then shine a flashlight directly at the screen. If you can see your interface then you have a dead backlight & need a new LCD. If you do not see the image then the LCD itself is defective {Apparently a common problem} & you'll need a new LCD. Either way you should contact HTC service as you have a 2 YR warranty.
@ cocomic: Where is Your Diam on these trips, A windscreen mount or a console mount? If it's a console mount, most likely you have an air vent blowing directly at it & that's just asking for moisture build up. But, if it was a "moisture" issue as you stated, then HTC would not be fixing it for free. They would see the oxidation from the moisture & say that it's your fault for getting it wet, & charge you out the ass for that part. {That's why ALL devices have LDIs} If you use a windscreen mount, then you have your device sitting in the sun for a long time! Sunlight KILLS LCDs!!! It may be more likely that you burned your screen by having it exposed for long periods. But it's probably just the issue that many people have. If you go to HTCforums you will see a lot of people have LCD issues.
If you have warranty return it to the store.

I have a windscreen mount, the air vent doesn't blow directly on the device. furthermore, the sun couldn't have burnt the LCD as the last time it died (for good), it was 11 PM.
the phone is in service and has the online status on their website: "the phone is in the lab, waiting for spare part". this means that whatever the issue is, hopefully it's gonna be fixed under warranty.
nevertheless, I find it appalling that a device built in 2008 has huge design and construction faults causing it to malfunction whenever used in a car with the AC turned on...
I'll keep you posted on the outcome
later edit: update: I've just got off the phone with a secretary at the htc service. apparently the motherboard fried and they ordered a new one. from what she said only the case will remain the same, it may be that the lcd display was caught in the chain reaction . the bad thing is that I will probably have to wait for another week, the good thing is that I will get an almost new phone...
as they didn't say anything about the LDI, it's either that the condensed vapors didn't touch it, only the circuits, or the fault did not come from the humidity... one can only guess...
It may not have been condensation that caused the problem. It could be that your Mainboard had a problem that was amplified by your trips in the car. Either way, you get a factory refurbished Diamond, & that's jus' sweet. I have to call them this week about my Diam because my front cam isn't working. I never really use it, but if it's covered, I might as well make them flip the bill while I can.
no, really, do that... i remember that a few weeks before the 'incident' my rear camera stopped working, too... i never payed too much attention as i considered it to be just a spb mobile shell software issue which would have eventually gone away after a hard reset or something...
you are probably right, my MB was slowly dying, organs failing (i have just watched a house md rerun, sorry )... if you have the possibility to have it checked while it's still in warranty and have the camera fixed while at it, why not?
I'm moving this, as it has no pertinece to the original topic. This link; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4476473#post4476473 is a post I started to see if anyone else had these issues. Read the update on the first post

[Q] usb not working on SGS Captivate, just for charging

Alright, I tried first with the stock rom: different usb cables, kies, installing uninstalling samsung drivers, double twist, on a mac and on windows 7, and nothing works, no matter what I tried, none of that could show me the notification bar asking for what to do with the usb connection. Of course I tried setting the phone on debugging mode and on mass storage, also ask everytime, etc.
Finally I decided to leave the stock rom and move to Cognition froyo, in order to discard a hardware issue. Thanks to Rom manager I could make it without needing the usb at all.
Once in Cognition v2.3b8 I crossed my fingers and looked to the sky (even considering that I'm atheist) and plug in the usb to my computer.... and nothing happens besides the phone charging.
Can I say right now that this is definitely a hardware issue?
Some people here are use to say, "if it's charging, definitely it's a drivers issue", but after moving to a new rom, and trying in three computers (two windows and one mac) it is a drivers issue that I can fix without buying a captivates motherboard?
Please help me out here and I'll buy you a beer, a blue moon one if you like ;P
Have you played with your USB settings; debugging, mounting SD card etc?

I'm pretty sure there's a problem with your USB cable if it's not the drivers. Try using a different cable and check.. Should work!
I am having the same issue and I took it to AT&T device warranty center and they found that the USB side on the phone had some water corrosion in it and therefore my warranty is voided. I also went down the path of installing drivers, different OS but this seems to be close. now If some can tell me how to clean this port...awesome
Is the water sensitive patch under the battery still white?

First make sure its not the usb cable. Main power leads in cable usually hold up but smaller wire leads are much more fragile and the only symptom you may get is either wont be recognized and/or usb registers as data connection on the dropdown menu. Ive had a captivate with a corrosion problem but Ive also had a Samsung cable that had broken shorted out data lead but still charged fine.
You can clean port with fingernail emery board cut to shape and stripped on one side of board to proper thickness. Its a five minute mod to a 99 cent board.

I've seen long threads of people who reported the same issue: no actual water damage, but a messed up USB port and their warranties being unjustly denied. Try cleaning the contacts in the phone's microUSB port with a coffee filter dabbed in rubbing alcohol, or scratching at them with a thin wire.
I'm currently having USB port issues with my brand new replacement Captivate (phone sometimes randomly thinks it's plugged in when it isn't, thinks it isn't plugged in when it is), haven't had any luck fixing them yet.
If there's no visual residue on the charging port, they cannot rightfully void your warranty. The captivate has 2 LDI's(Liquid Damage Indicators), one on the battery and one on the phone itself, behind the battery. As long as those two are white, and as long as there isn't a bunch of green crap on the charging port, they will replace it.
I work at AT&T, and we deal with this everrrrrrrrry day. 3 big rules with warranty swaps; LDI's need to be white, charging ports need to be intact and not corroded, and there needs to be no physical damage, any scratches or dings that you can feel with a fingernail are considered physical damage. We help people who terlet their phones get warranty exchanges sometimes, nothing an exacto knife and some raw effort can't fix. AT&T is a weak beast, be assertive and they will bend to your will.
In all honesty though, just make the charging port as clean as you can and call in. Ask for a supervisor, tell them it's a documented defect with a recent wave of Captivates, and you won't hang up until they exchange it for you.
well thanks for the help, now I'm gonna check the white indicators and if the phones usb needs to be clean

I had that problem with my brand-new second Captivate out of the box. Not going to deal with warranty and bull**** water damage accusations, this is being returned to the retailer first chance I get.
I've had something weird happen as well. I've had my Captivate plugged into my PC using USB Debugging at least 10 - 15 times today. I also clicked "Mount" so I could transfer files that I have backed up.
Now suddenly it stopped working. I have jumped around using every port on my laptop (all 4). I have noticed it's acted weird before.
But now (without anything plugged in at all) the laptop keeps popping up saying USB Device Not Recognized.....even though I'm not trying to plug anything in.
Should I reinstall the Samsung 32 bit drivers? I did uninstall Kies today because I had no use for it. It was annoying to have Kies open every time I plugged in.
I have a captivate lying around which have the same problem, i/e the USB cable works fine for charging but not for PC connectivity.
Since it is a development phone, I just reverted to using adb wireless widget.
Other than that, after reading this thread, it seems to be a common issue.
I got my phone exchanged (again) and no USB or GPS problems this time. I got a grainier-looking screen though...meh can't complain really, since this is the only Captivate I've owned that doesn't have any major/hardware-related problems.
My USB not working ended up being my laptop (not phone). I had to unplug the power supply....shut down for a few minutes.....reboot and it worked. I had tried reinstalling the drivers but it did nothing.

I appreciate the advice use some acetone to remove the green stuff but phone is still being difficult when trying to connect to the pc ...be nice if samsung came up with something so there wouldnt be a possibility that water would get in the port
I've had this problem since i got my phone, and i've had it for months now.
Always thought it was drivers.
My last try was with the new AIO captivate tool box app and the drivers their.
For those of you that got replacements how did you go about this.
just go to the store? Or is there a number to call to do it over the phone?
It's just annoying not being able to transfer pictures and such off my phone, hell it worked with my iPhone. I know you can setup wifi file transfers, but if i'm at a friends house it would be nice just to be able to plugin the phone and transfer files too it.
I fixed this problem selling out the phone. Not joke.
BUT, thing is, that the buyer, couple days after the purchase, told me that he fixed this issue by simply restoring the phone to the stock rom through odin 1 click.
Why I didn't try that easy fix? Simply because I thought that the phone was already in the stock rom :S
Lesson learned: always double check if you're in stock rom or not. (obviously you don't need to do this if your purchased the phone brand new!)
It's really weird, a week ago my phone suddenly freezing while I was out, I took the battery off and put it back but it was stucking on AT&T logo scree. I've tried that for few times nothing changed, put it away and the next day tried for few more times and this time came up (also recovery mode and 3 buttons didn't work too).
Everything was look fine but had a problem it was when I plug the USB cable it's just showing the charge status, means couldn't connect the Phone to PC ,I tried with some other cables and PCs, also put hair dryer if possibly water went in but the problem was from the phone.. also when took the USB off the charging status was keep going. first thing I thought it would be the ROM, I had some other ROM in the memory to I flashed to another ROM, but the problem was still there.
tried many times nothing changed, I was almost wanted to grab a new one, till 2 nights ago after a week while it was charging I suddenly noticed that it can connected, I straight away got backups copied to PC and flashed to Stock, now everything looks fine after few days and it works good.
any suggestion on that? is it could be water inside or something?
My ROM was Cognition 2.3 at that time
hope it's not gonna happens again.
I had the same problem and it was a bad USB port any phones made before December '10 have had a lot of problems. Warranty gave me a replacement without question.

[Q] Can't charge while phone is on

I flashed a cyan build delta using the app cyandelta the other day and after that, the phone refused to charge unless it was turned off. I figured the build had broken something but discovered that the phone would hang when trying to boot into twrp. So i did a full reset using the 1.29 ruu to see if that would help and it did not except now i get a warning on screen saying the usb host is unplugged and unable to change in the notification area.
the stock build also suffers from other random quirks like during phone call it repeatedly turns on and off the speaker phone and the gyro sensor will randomly turn my screen sideways.
took it into the sprint store and said there was corrosion on the charging port but i know it has not gotten wet at all the past few days and that the problem occurred right after the flash.. They refuse to touch the phone and say i have to pay 150 to replace it. I have tried cleaning the port with a dry toothbrush to no avail
Is there anything else i can try and re flash that might fix some messed up software or was flashing the ruu the best bet.
Thanks for your time and help

Had the EXACT same issue on mine, never unlocked or rooted. Sometimes the volume would just disappear as well (even when using headphones) but the Beats icon would still show. Everything would go into permanent landscape mode at times. Calls answered in speaker automatically. If I plugged it in while it was on I got the usb host notification. The car mode app thingamajig launched for no flippin' reason, had to turn it off to charge it, all that jazz.
Definitely a hardware issue with the usb port. I took mine to Sprint hoping for a replacement but it has a barely visible crack horizontally across the screen so that was denied unless I agreed to pay the $150 deductible. It flew out of a car with me about a month prior so that did some damage to the phone. Then I dropped it the day these issues started happening. The port felt loose, I figured all of the wear and tear messed it up.
I didn't actually fix the phone though. It just randomly started working smoothly again and I haven't had a problem with it since - it has been a couple of months now. From all of the research I did, I saw that most people had the problem just fix itself for no reason and never come back. I tried cleaning the port and poking and prodding but nothing fixed it. Just one day, BOOM, all better.
Hope it decides to behave soon

Reboots & Shutdowns w/ Fingerprint Scanner

Hello,
Recently I have been having issues where my Note 9 would randomly restart every 5-10 when left on standby. It never happens when the screen is on. I've tried safe mode and a factory reset to no avail. Finally, I switched my screen lock type to pin, and poof. Problem gone. Tested multiple times and the fingerprint sensor is definitely the culprit. Any reason why this is happening? So odd...
Faulty hardware possibly. Factory reset to exclude software as the cause and if not return to Samsung for repair

xda members should be getting a portion of Samsung support employees' salary for doing part of their job for them.
I had the same issue this last week. Safe mode testing and restarts. Cache wipe and restarts again. Factory reset and good for two days. Put fingerprint back and 2 hours later I'm back on the reboot loop and after a day of Google I came across this post. Disabling stopped me from throwing the phone across the room today. This is weird, but disabling fingerprint unlock fixed my problem.
note 9 bootloop because of fingerprint scanner
I was constantly in a bootloop when screen would shut down. I tried every suggestion from, wiping cache, hard reset, safe mode, etc.... I diabled my fingerprint scanner and have not had any rebooting at all, my phone is under warranty and they are sending me a new one. Kind of upset about getting a new phone, but i will get over it. I contacted at&t and informed them of the problem and the resolution and the fellow on the line was very happy that i brought this to their attention. I hope i can help someone with the same problem.

Issue fixed - DIY
To all who see this, I also had this same issue. And I fixed it in just less than an hour.
The fingerprint scanner on the Note9's and S9's do seem to not like moisture. I powered my Note9 off, and rested it on it's screen on a flat surface.
I then took 99% rubbing alcohol and a Q-Tip and poured drip-sized amounts of alchohol on the Fingerprint sensor. I wanted to make sure the fingerprint sensor was neatly dressed in the alchohol and allow the alchohol to dry there.
Waited about 15 to 20 minutes and then powered the phone on. Set the fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone, and tested this 3 days before posting here. I no longer get random reboots.
Issue fixed.
If you try this yourself, make sure you use 99% alchohol. 70% has water mixed in which the sensor may clearly not like if the issue is really moisture getting in the sensor.
I tried this after seeing another user in another forum claim that he used rice to fix his sensor rebooting issue. Rice works but it takes longer.
Do this at your own risk. Good luck.
I am having the EXACT issue here. Random reboots/power off when the phone is on Standby. I disabled the fingerprint unlock and the problem is gone. That's the culprit for sure. Safemode, nothing works. I types *#0*# in phone dialer and tested the fingerprint sensor. Everything passes except for a test item called RESET and the test shows FAIL. So this is definitely a hardware problem. I am trying the alcohol fix now to see if it works. I have never submerged the phone but I have wiped it with a very damp towel for quite a few times because it is supposed to be IP67 water proof. This should be Samsung's problem. If this does not work I guess I will have to send it in for warranty repair.

SO I tried the alcohol solution. It did not work right away. The test still showed a FAIL and the phone would still reboot randomly while on standby. BUT IT WORKED THE MORNING AFTER! I am not sure if it just took it's time to dry. But I had cleaned the sensor with damp cloth before and it never had this rebooting issue. Well I guess this solution works. Definitely worth a try.
Thanks!
I had to eventually get my fingerprint sensor replaced for mine to work. They're only $15 on amazon. I recommend looking into repairing it yourself if you can. You would need an embossing heat gun, a ring suction cup, and some nylon picks to help hold it open. You can usually buy a decent kit for <$10 (- the heat gun). Also be prepared to ruin a deck of cards or purchase a metal phone opening tool. I like using cards because they're thin enough to get underneath the back plate, but thick enough to leave a gap to get my nylon picks in place. They also don't damage the shell like the metal opening tools can. The fingerprint sensor is probably one of the easiest repairs you can do, and the worst that could happen is that you break the back plate of your phone, which buying a new backplate+sensor is still cheaper than sending it in for repairs. You can buy some B7000 adhesive to put the backplate back on. Or just reheat the old adhesive that's already on there. Just be careful with it around water once you do this. Repairing your phone breaks the seal that was on there, so it's not as waterproof as it once was.

Pixel 5 multiple sensors and software issues

Hello everyone,
Since a few weeks I have several issues with my Pixel 5, mostly sensors issues (compass, gyroscope, proximity, etc.) but also some weird system software behaviors.
It began mid November when I woke up and realized my phone restarted on its own during the night.
Since then I have these issues :
- Compass not working
- Proximity sensor not working
- Gyroscope working only for a few seconds at start, and then completely stop.
- Phone freezes almost every time I unlock it. It freezes for like 3 to 5 seconds, the colors of the screen are dimmed, and then it finally unlocks.
- When the phone is playing audio content (songs, ring, alarms, etc.) the sound cuts out every 10 seconds (exactly) for like one second and then come back.
- In random moments, the phone will display an error "Process is not responding".
- The small proximity sensor LED is always blinking if I enable "Always on Display" feature.
- Finally, I can't install any Google Play System updates. I perform the installation, reboot the device, but a few minutes after this restart the phone will restart on its own and the Google Play System update will not be not applied (I can perform it again, and again, and again, etc.)
I tried several things : safe mode, factory reset, but I also reinstalled the whole Android 13 image with adb and fastboot. The issues still continue.
I sent the phone to be repaired by Google but they were "unable to reproduce these issues".
They also told me the phone has been damaged by water, which seems weird because the phone didn't had any incident with water that I can remember. I think I had one time the message "Liquid or debris in USB port" about six months ago, I don't understand why the problems would suddenly appear now.
They sent it back without any repair.
I don't know what to try anymore, I was convinced it was only a software issue (and that all the issues were related) but even reinstalling the whole android image didn't solve it. So is it a hardware issue after all ?
Any recommendation on how to process with these issues would be much appreciated. Or maybe I need to give up and buy a new phone ?
Thank you.
It's either water damaged or it's not. Google saw the moisture sensitive indicator(s) showed water exposure. So somehow this happened. If it's been exposed to water the first thing to do is disconnect the battery and allow it to dry out completely then see what you got.
At this late stage the damage may be permanent.
If it was salt water it's already dead. Sweat is salt water... keep 'em in a good case and keep it clean.

Thank you for your response.
But what I don't understand is why the issues would suddenly appear months after its contact with water, which was only rain by the way.
I am 100% sure it did not had any water incident at the time the issues appeared.
Water damage is insidious which is why manufacturers won't warranty it. Damage can be delayed sometimes taking weeks or months to become apparent.
buying used P5 now due to water damage :-(
Almost went for P7, great device, but I think I'll be fine until the P8 and hopeful Google will have a good trade in value like this year.
$200 for mint P5
$540 + shipping taces etc I believe if you have one od those.
but I think I'll save the $300 for now.. If i had the cash I'd go P7, but P5 is a wonderful device,
