Rooting Note 8 SM-N950F without wiping data - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Rooting Note 8 SM-N950F without wiping data
Is it possible?
And if not possible, how to I restore from backup after the root? Cause I want to keep all my data after the root.
Someone told me that if I restore from backup after the root process, the data will be encrypted, what does that mean? That I will not be able to read or write anything I restored?
Thanks for whomever answers :good:

I thought it was using the easy root method (no TWRP) but when I rebooted it had wiped the entire device.
Not possible by the looks of it.

Unfortunately the samfail process is going to replace the system and when flashing the files will require a full wipe to complete it.
This is just the 1st time to get onto rooted cfw. Once there you can use safestrap twrp and make full backups or you can use flashfire.
Otherwise use smartswitch app and backup data to sd then restore that way, the pc smart switch route is broken once rooted.

What if I would backup with Samsung cloud? Or Google drive?

You have Exynos so SamFail is not for your phone. You would be rooting after installing TWRP. Unfortunately TWRP will require you to remove encryption initially which requires formatting the data partition.
What data did you want to backup? Like app data?
Internal storage won't get wiped but if you don't format to remove encryption after installing TWRP you will no longer be able to access it when trying to boot to system. Internal storage is easy to backup, just copy to dekstop or external storage.
To back up app data without root, I believe these days there are a few options now. Check out Helium. I don't have any experience with it but I hear that's a good one for app data backup without root. After you do root & get settled, Titanium Back Up has always worked great for me.

[Q] restoring from backup image after installing custom kernel

Hey i have just made a backup of my system and saved it on external sdcard using CWM. now after unlocking BL and installing a custom kernel, if i restore this image, will it work? i am asking this as i know unlocking BL will erase my internal sdcard, but i don't want to lose anything. so i am planning to install a custom kernel and then restore the backup image. is this possible? and would i retain all my data using this method?
By restoring your cwm backup you will over write any data that was on the phone either in system or data.
If you got root before you do anything else use titanium backup or backup pro and backup your aps and data.
Move these to PC with anything else that shows up on internal SD card.
Then you can restore your cwm then move back to phone your app backup and restore these. DON'T RESTORE SYSTEM APPS THIS MIGHT CAUSE BOOTLOOP.
By doing any of this is will not affect your kernel/unlock state.

[Q] Browsing a TWRP backup?

So, somehow I got my phone into a bootloop, and I made a backup of my data partition with TWRP. I reset it, and tried to restore the data partition, and the corrupted file is in there (was trying to edit settings.db for hotspot on Sprint). Anyways, when I restore the data partition, it bootloops again. So I want to get into the backup, and replace the bad settings.db file so I can restore the partition and have all my data back. How can I browse the backup using my windows 8.1 pc?

you cant. why are you restoring your data partition? that wont boot up, since its system that you edited. restore the whole nandroid backup, boot, system, and data. and if you didnt make a backup of boot or system, then reflash your rom to fix it. flash it dirty, as to not lose your data. and if you dont have a rom to flash, then youre stuck having to flash the factory img.

I only did data. The backup was AFTER it was in the bootloop, so I only backed up data.

ahh.. then in no way will it get restored, since its the system partion that you actually messed with. data just holds all your user data, thats all.

That is EXACTLY what I want to restore. All my apps, settings, pictures, etc etc etc.
I've got the phone factory reset, on and working.

well, unfortunately, it doesnt seem to be a good back up
if you factory rest again, have google restore your stuff. itll restore your apps, and main settings, and even wallpaper. and your photos are in your storage already. unless you didnt have it enabled to back up everything in the main settings.

I have never had luck with auto backup. It doesn't seem to capture everything. Plus there were things that I stored on internal storage (used to be my SD card on my Samsung phones ) that wouldn't have been backed up, like my Pokemon saved game. I knew I should have copied my internal storage before trying to restore, but I thought the data backup would have done it. Great.
Not sure if this is what your looking for but try nandroid manager: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.bkrestore
Edit: thats on device only, sorry about that. I had an issue in the past where I didn't have any apps saved via TiBu and had only a TWRP backup. Installed a clean ROM, rooted and then used the app posted to browse the backup on my phone and restore the vital apps that I needed. (Like google authenticator)... Good luck

How to root Moto G5s Plus without losing data

Is there a way to root this phone without losing data, settings and apps? In my previous phone (Cubot X9), I was able to download this app called Kingroot and it rooted my phone with just a click and all my data, settings and apps were intact.
Is there a way to backup the data and then after root, restore the data?
Main reason I want to root the phone is to disable the vibration when unlocking the phone with fingerprint and also to enable the notification led.

No apps like 'kingoroot' will work.
For getting root, you need to unlock bootloader, which will erase everything on phone (apps/photos/videos/anything on internal storage), you can take backup of internal storage (photos/videos/etc) but i don't think it's possible to backup app's data without root.
Then you will have to install TWRP and then Root of your choice. (Magisk is recommended if safetynet matters to you.)
[There is encryption on stock ROM by default, and it caused me to wipe my device again after installing stuffs on my device, so after you get your device working fine, then only restore data to internal storage back, till then keep it safe on external or PC.]

I think I lost all my data

Hi, I want to install custom rom but I think because of encryption I lost my all internal storage :/
Before mi 9t pro, I used an old android phone. Because of that I didn't know too much about encrption.
When I open OrangeFox it asks my password. So I thought remove my password before any rom installation should be enough.
I remove my password. After dirty rom flash my phone didn't boot to system but did boot to recovery.
Guess what? All my file names are random
Before anyone say, I have a backup. But where Yesss it is in internal storage with encryption
I tried to wipe data, didn't work. I flash my rom mi flash with keeping data, didn't work.
Now my phone boot up, I can see my files with random names.
Why I didn't backup to computer? Because I was lazy.
My big question;
Can I recover my files (~70 gb), I know my old password.
It's a good thing your data wasn't important then, if it was you would have a backup stored on a PC or cloud. First rule of flashing, have a backup. You can't recover it's gone, format data In twrp to remove encryption and wipe your internal storage then flash your rom.

Yes, it isn't too much important but I'm a little sad. I just lost few whatsapp message.
I will delete everything now. After that, I will disable this encryption.
Thanks
P.S: Whoever read this don't be lazy like me

Question Does TWRP backup everything?

I'm planning to backup my current ROM using TWRP before switching over to another one. If I selected everything on the TWRP backup screen, how much data will this include? Will I be able to restore it and have everything run exactly the same as it is now? App data? Files? System settings?

It does NOT backup everything. TWRP only backups the operating system. If you flash the wrong file or change the wrong setting, which can / will cause bricks, then TWRP is used to restore the OS to the original state you backed up. Internal storage files are not backed up, nor app data.

Ah I see, so I have to backup files manually, but the app data too? I was under the impression that the so-called NANDroid backups at least includes app data

Yes, it will backup app data. Btw, you really need to select the boot, system, and data partitions. For the other partitions, you can keep separate backups (in case of a bad restore). On that note, your first restore might appear broken; try restarting the phone; it should boot fine the next time around.
Cheers.
