The Bootloop of Death - Fix it Challenge - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hi Ppl,
I have a OP3T with unlocked bootloader and stock OTA updated OS. I unlocked the phone several months ago and didn't touch anything in that regard (CustomROM, TWRP, ....)
When I walked down the stairs (no fancy stuff, just moving as humans do who are hungry and go to lunch ) the phone entered bootlooping. My journey begins and up to now I am not able to fix it and need your help.
Things I tried:
Holding vol+ to go into fastboot. Fastboot screen appears, I cannot select anything and phone reboots after 2 secs
Holding vol- seems to stop the looping process but phone doesn't start even with pressing power additionally
Long press of power (the 40ish secs) to power off the phone doesn't work. Phone continues to loop
Followed several guides to get a USB connection (like 10secs holding vol+, connect via usb and inspect the device manager). The expected device is shown for a couple of secs and the phone loops thus the device disappears again.
I let the phone do its looping over night to empty the battery. Woke up in the morning, phone stopped looping (who would have thought that, battery is dead). Started to hold vol+ and tried the whole connect to usb thingie, same result. COM devices disappears after several secs.
Do you, honourable members of this community, can help me with the aforementioned issue? I can't figure out whats wrong and how to fix it.
Thanks in advance

Tried a different cable?
Tried different USB ports?
Tried flashing recovery via fastboot or booting the Recovery img via "fastboot boot twrp.img"?
Reinstalled your ADB, Fastboot and L2 Drivers?
Tried the Oreo Unbrick Tool?
Tried wiping internal storage via "Fastboot format userdata"?

Different Cable and Ports --> Yes
Fastboot or booting recovery --> see above, not possible since the phone loops every 2secs and the only thing that stopps it is a dead battery
Reinstall of computer resources (driver, ad, L2) --> same, connection is not stable and toggling from connected to disconnected after 2secs
Oreo Unbrick Tool --> same since I can't establish a stable connection
Wipe of internal storage --> same, connection

Alright so try this. Kind of a janky thing, and it needs a lot of tries. So you have a few seconds before the phone reboots yeah?
On CMD/Powershell, type out the command "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" before plugging in the device.
Then plug your device in, go to fastboot, and quickly hit enter on Powershell. The flashing takes 1.4S to complete. This should be enough time for TWRP to be flashed.

Okay so I have an update:
target reported max download size of 435159040 bytes
sending 'recovery' (22680 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.557s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.168s]
finished. total time: 0.729s
So recovery is written succesfully but still the device is bootlooping
Do you have further suggestions?

Can you get into Recovery by holding Power and Vol +?

Nope. Vol+ and power just shows the fastboot menu (where you usually select start, recovery, power off) but i can't select anything (you probably know from experience it takes some time, say a few secs, until you can select something.)
It shows this screen where it says bootloader unlocked and similar stuff for 2 secs and the loop continues.
The screen I see for 2-3 secs is the following. I can't select anything

Maybe power button got stuck somehow? Check ifixit how to open back cover only to be sure.
Edit: Remember something similar happened to my OPO years ago and that solved the issue.

Thought about that also. I also tried to give the phone a hard knock, wiggled the power button and so on without effect.
I guess I have to order the ifixit kit
Further suggestions what to try are still welcome

in the 2(ish) seconds that you have to send an adb command over, are you able to reboot to recovery via that? (adb reboot-recovery or something like that....) and then from the format the internal storage maybe...
this is a complete shot in the dark cus I'm not necessarily sure how the boot partition works (maybe someone could help me out lol.) is it possible to flash a stock boot.img to the boot partition via adb in the brief moment you have connection? just to see if something changes??
good luck on this endeavor of yours

[Q] Boot-Up Issue, Unrooted, Please help

Woke up today after using my phone to set an alarm last night...and my phone was shutdown (plugged in).
I tried starting it up, and the phone wouldn't boot past the white HTC startup screen. Since then I've tried booting up several times, including using volume down button, and then clicking fastboot, but the screen just goes black and nothing happens. Effectively I'm stuck at the start-up screen.
My phone is only a couple months old, and is not rooted. Also since I have not attempted anything fancy, I have not yet backed up any of my data, photos, etc. The only advice I've had so far is to do a factory reset, but this would erase important videos, which I really don't want to loose.
Does anyone have suggestions on things to try to either somehow backup my data before a reset, or to fix this issue?
Thanks,
Bill

I am noob at this. my phone is unrooted, so my bootloader is locked. How do I run the erase cache command as you suggested? I've spent sometime looking for a forum telling me how, but have not found anyting... presumably i need software for my pc and connect the phone to it, or should there be some menu on the phone i can get to, to type in the command?

you will need to have fastboot/adb tools installed on your computer ----> HERE
and you'll need latest HTC drivers installed. This can be done by installing HTC sync software you can find HERE
start with this, ill update this post with more instructions
reboot phone in bootloader mode (hold down POWER + VOL DWN)
you will have a screen similar to this
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

select ''FASTBOOT'' (use volume up/down to navigate and power button to select)
then connect phone to computer (better to use a usb port at the back of your computer and don't use any usb hub)
The screen should now display ''FASTBOOT USB''' and the phone should be recognized by your computer.
Now open adb/fastboot tool by clicking on ''Minimal ADB and Fastboot'' icon
it will open a cmd prompt like this:
type these cmds:
Code:
fastboot erase cache [COLOR="Red"]<------- press ''enter''[/COLOR]
fastboot reboot [COLOR="red"]<------- press ''enter''[/COLOR]
now the phone will reboot
check if the phone is now booting properly.
btw no need to unlock the bootloader and root your phone atm

Yes phone is correctly recognized. Honestly its the first time I see that ''erasing error''.
You might want to try factory reset your phone... but it will wipe all your data.
Your phone is only a couple months old... still under warranty?
Btw factory reset is step #1 when you call htc cus.ser.

yes as @SaHiLzZ said, factory reset won't wipe the internal sdcard partition where your photo and video are stored. It will wipe /data partition where your users settings and app are stored. so you should not lost your media files.
The other options will require unlocking bootloader which will void your warranty. So if your phone is still under warranty better to get it repaired or replaced instead.

I hope you all are correct. I spoke with HTC about sending in my phone for repair, and they said that since HTC One phones don't have an external or removal SD card...just internal memory, that all my photos/files/etc will be lost in the factory reset. Perhaps this discrepancy is in the model or type of HTC One?
Thanks,

Hi everyone, just boutht this phone preowned. It works well, but i dont know if the ex-owner modded it bad.
Everytime i try to enter the phone in recovery mode (pressing vol-,vol+ and power) led starts blinking green and red colour, and a screen like this, appear to me:

I press volume down button to enter in rescue mode, and I get a new screen, it says: PHONE LOCKED (in a green color. Now what does it mean? Bootloader is still locked? Or the phone has problems?) and I cant to connect phone in rescue mode from hisuite.
I have the same problem (the screen I attached, appear to me) not only when i want to go into recovery mode, but also when I charge my phone when it s power off( when i charge it not in power on) or if i want to flash an update.app from local update menu.
What could i do? Im in trouble. Thanks
It seems like recovery is missing. I'd try to flash stock recovery image or twrp (both to be found here in the forum) via adb
Maybe this helps:

Thank you guys, im trying in the next hours. Could you explain me where to get adb? Please
Thank you all! I solved my problem following ur links. I denied root permission for adb , then i put it into fastboot and rescue mode and flashed the recovery.IMG stock through adb. Thanks again.

i have this problem too.please help us.is there a way to solve this issue??!!
First of all, install the driver by installing HiSuite.
Second, make sure the USB cable is connected to the PC when you try to enter fastboot (rescue) mode. If the rescue mode is not there, then the last option is to try and force the update with 3 button method, but you must have a SD card for that.

[Q] Factory reset not working

Hi friends,
I really hope somebody can help me out here..
My mum's Moto G 2014 (stock rom, just like it came out of the box, no tinkering, nothing) started acting weird. It had force-closes all over, nothing worked. So I boot into fastboot mode, select "Factory". The factory reset doesn't work - user data is clearly still there when I boot.
So I try wiping user data and cache with fastboot from the PC (linux). Command runs through, no error message. But the user data is still there when I boot - I still get 100 force-closes, the thing is unusable.
Next I go ahead and unlock the bootloader (which should wipe all data, right)? Again, userdata is still there when I boot.
Then I flash TWRP. But when I boot into fastboot and select "recovery", the screen just goes dark. Same after I flash CWM instead. (And the same, incidentally, as it was with stock recovery - selecting "recovery" just makes the screen go dark).
I am left clueless ... having voided the warranty by unlocking the bootloader. Any pointers?
Thanks, guys.
Power off your phone. When the screen goes black, press and hold the Volume Down button with one finger. Then, while still holding this button, press and hold the Power button with another finger. This will bring up the Bootloader menu, then tap the Volume Down button once to highlight Recovery Mode. From here, simply press the Volume up once, and TWRP recovery should come right up. Touch Wipe and you'll see the Factory Reset.

No - not yet. Where would I get the stock ROMs? I think I've got the XT1068 version of the phone, (Germany, dual-SIM).
Can I just flash the ROM with fastboot from the PC? Without having a custom recovery on the device? (as I said, flashing TWRP or CWM with fastboot didn't work, no error message but no success either).
EDIT: I now managed to get into the stock recovery - I just didn't know I had to press the Vol-Up-Key to confirm (and when the android on its back shows, then hold Power for a few seconds and tap Vol UP to enter the recovery). So I'm in the recovery now. However, selecting "wipe data / factory reset" still doesn't work. I get these error messages:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

What commands did you enter when in download mode on the phone? What commands on the pc did you enter and what did your phone say in download mode while doing it?
Yes, you flash your stock rom via fastboot and you don't need a custom recovery.
Check this thread and look for your version:

First I entered
Code:
fastboot erase cache
The PC said:
Code:
erasing 'cache'...
OKAY [ 0.033s]
finished.
The phone said:
Code:
cmd:getvar:partition-type:cache
cmd: erase:cache
Then I hit
Code:
fastboot erase userdata
The PC said:
Code:
erasing 'userdata'...
OKAY [ 0.034s]
finished.
And the phone said:
Code:
cmd:getvar:partition-type:userdata
cmd: erase:userdata
So no error message there (unlike when I start a wipe/reset from the stock recovery). The userdata aren't erased in either case - all the apps are still there (and I'm bombarded with force-closes of all sorts of apps and services every 0.5 seconds)

Thanks! I'll definitely try that. But I don't dare get my hopes up after flashing CWM and TWRP didn't work (and factory reset neither). This really starts looking like a brick to me.
That's really strange.
Flash the stock rom and we will see what happens.

I downloaded and flashed all parts of the ROM in the order suggested in the .bat file. It turned out as I suspected: No error message (neither in fastboot on the PC nor on the device while flashing), but no change on the device. Even after flashing the stock ROM and erasing userdata and cache at the end of the process, my old apps are still there and nothing appears to have changed. Still getting a ton of force-closes, it's unusable.
It's as if the phone is in read-only mode, I erasing userdata or flashing new ROM doesn't do anything. The only thing I have to go on at this point are the error messages I posted in the photo above (after trying to wipe from the stock recovery:

This. I am also having exactly this problem (of endless force quits and inability to flash stock), with precisely the same error message when resetting from recovery. The thread I started '[Q] Custom Recovery Only Works By "fastboot boot"' turns out to have been the wrong title...it seems likely the reason I can't flash a custom recovery (despite unlocked bootloader) is the same reason I can't format partitions either (stock recovery can't, nor can TWRP format /data). Although adb shell can be used for manually formatting partitions, it is serious stuff not to be attempted casually ("instant expert" disease is a leading cause of death so I have not tried it.
Sadly, I can't offer you any help other than to add to link our threads in the hope that something I've discovered may lead a knowledgeable dev to the source of this problem.
Same problem here.
Any write operation fails, while fastboot claims anything was "OKAY".
Only "fastboot -w" gives some hint to the actual problem:
Code:
# fastboot -w
Erase successful, but not automatically formatting.
File system type raw not supported.
Erase successful, but not automatically formatting.
File system type raw not supported.
erasing 'userdata'...
OKAY [ 0.077s]
erasing 'cache'...
OKAY [ 0.014s]
finished. total time: 0.091s
However, I was not able to solve it.
I suspect this to be a hardware failure but I did not give up hope completely yet :-\
I have the exact same problem
Has anyone solved it yet?
bump
Thats seems to be my problem too.
With stock recovery and stock rom I didn't manage to wipe cache and user data. I also try it with fastboot but nothing. Nothing clear no erase at all.
Desparate and waiting a solution
Same problem - can't erase, can't flash.
Should ask help from Motorola Support.
Will call to their support and hope they will provide me 2nd level assist, not just advice to use warranty. No official Motorola in my country.
For anyone who would try to get support - chat on site is useless - they will tell you to do Wipe in recovery.
For additional support - call (US) Motorola Support 1-800-734-5870 and try to reach advanced support.
*Motorola chat support advised me to use Talkatone app to make a call, since I'm out of US.
**Get all of available phone docs - IMEI and other stuff.
I can't try their support since MotoG2 is of my girlfriends and is away now.
Support told me to call back only when I will hold the phone in my hands and will have IMEI to provide.
RSD Lite 6.2.4 works with Moto G, earlier versions would not work.
Same stuff - flashed ok but nothing changes.
If we use "mfastboot boot boot.img"
Device shows "updating android applications 1 of 7", then "Starting Android", but then black screen. Again.
But better than was - just black screen without any signs.
Is there any way to boot up different bootloader to get it's fastboot?
Anyone have tried to lock the bootloader, reflash the stock rom from fastboot and unlock again the bootloader?
A similar situation happened to me and this resolve the problem.

When locking bootloader - reboot is required since no commands will work.
But after rebooting everything is still same. Bootloader still UNlocked.

Hold the volume keys and power key at the same time for as long as u can....maybe even a few minutes until it shuts down. If all else fails let it drain then boot to recovery and gfix whatever caused the boot hang
Its drained just before 30 minutes, and now the view is that
I cant boot to recovery neither to dowload

Glad I could help :good:
Hi everyone!
I've got similar problem to that. My device shows: "Your device can’t be checked for corruption. Please lock the bootloader”. I tried to fix that with OST, but no succes - critical unlock is neccesary. I've flashed with OST 6.04, 6.12, NOST 0.6, but nothing works. Also the ADB and QFIL can't see the device, so I can not critical unlock bootloader. In the device manager, phone is seen as ADB Interference -> fastboot Device, and after installing google driver as Android ADB Interference. Recovery and fastboot modes don't work, download mode works only after connecting with OST. I tried holding 3 keys, but phone turns off after about 20s and nothing happen - I can't enter recovery. I bought this device recently and some time later after turning on it showed that statement. The varranty has expired, so I can't send it to service.
I hope you can help me.

Phone stuck at black Mi logo

Hello, I never experienced this before so here I am trying to find some explanation, hopefully it's the right place... I have a Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro, few years old, sometimes slow but otherwise perfect, I changed the battery couple times.
Today I noticed it was at around 20% charge, I plug it to the wall, and leave it on the bed (turned on). After a few hours I go back to check on it and found the 100% indicator, but the phone was turned off.
I obviously try to turn it back on, but it gets stuck at the Mi logo (black screen with "unlocked" text below). I have installed a MIUI.eu rom ver. 11, twrp 3.2.3-0 recovery, and everything has been fine for years. I tried several times, still Mi logo (it's not bootloop, it's just stuck).
Suprised, I try to boot into recovery, and there I noticed that all the partitions are marked empty 0 bytes. I tried several things like backup, switching file format, restoring file system, etc., but it just won't work. It's like it has all been wiped and can't be mounted again.
I connected it to my desktop, MTP enabled from twrp, device recognized, storage completely empty. I remember I could see files there just the other day...
I tried all possible wipes, they won't work, either can't mount the partitions or other errors.
I already asked for suggestions elsewhere, which pointed me to fastboot flash using the adb/fastboot tools on Windows.
Well it says "Looking for devices...", the fastboot screen on the phone stays there for about 30 seconds, then it goes to the black Mi logo and then it shuts down.
Also if I boot in recovery, I can see it detected in the adb/fastboot tools screen, the scary part is that there it says "Bootloader: locked" (but it has been unlocked for years, and it even says unlocked in the black Mi screen!)
I'm lost, I never had anything like this, any suggestions to save the device? I would be really grateful

You probably don't have proper drivers for Mi 5 installed, download MIFLASH UNLOCK 3.5.1108.44 from here https://xiaomifirmware.com/downloads/download-mi-unlock-3-5-1108-44/
Double click on MiUsbDriver and install fastboot driver. Then phone will stay in fastboot mode when connected to PC, so you can try to install some original fastboot rom. I don't know what is the problem.

Thanks it was the driver stopping the fastboot.
Now I still cannot flash anything though, I get the following error:

Tried different roms, different MiFlash, from terminal, but same error.
From recovery I still see empty not mounted partitions.
Any other suggestions?
Well I don't know. Have you tried to format data in TWRP? Go into Wipe/Format Data/type yes (this will wipe EVERYTHING on phone) then from main menu reboot into recovery again and see if things changed.

Yes that was the first thing I tried unfortunately that's where I found out something was off... I can't wipe any partition, I can't mount any partition, I tried to switch filesystem but no luck.
I was reading in the forums here about "sudden death" and it kinda feels that's what happened. Phone fine one day, dead the next with no real explanation...

That's a bummer. I don't think that phone is dead, but it looks that it somehow locked itself. According to this guide https://flash-er.com/xiaomi-mi-5-flash-file/ you can flash fastboot roms only on unlocked devices. But you can't unlock it now in this state...

It's very weird, I've been flashing lots of stuff in the past but I've never been locked out like this.
And the joke is that the black Mi logo screen still says "unlocked" as it should be... no idea, maybe it is programmed to just give up after some years.
Could be that your TWRP recovery is corrupted. You can install new one from a fastboot mode:
1. Copy latest twrp-3.5.2_9-0-gemini.img to your fastboot tools location on PC
2. Put the phone in fastboot mode (power + volume down) and connect it to the computer
3. Enter these commands in cmd prompt:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.5.2_9-0-gemini.img
fastboot boot twrp-3.5.2_9-0-gemini.img
Then the phone will boot into new TWRP so you can check if it's ok.

I tried that, it gives the following error:
I noticed that even from MiFlash the device id sometimes disappears, not sure if that's the no link error
I really don't know what's going on. Maybe you can try this tutorial (it is for Mi 9, but can be applied to all Mi phones)

Thanks for trying I really appreciate. I did follow the tutorial, same error.
It's like the internal storage got fried or something? I have no clue
