Hello,
I joined the xda community about a year ago, first with my Htc Magic, then with my HD2. I have the opportunity to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab from some carrier for little extra money of my current Internet plan. And for 10 €/month more, I could get the new 10.1 version...
Although I do know that logically I should choose the 10.1, I still consider the 7'. Why ? Well, it would be cheaper at first. Then, I like the 7' size more and I'm not sure I would need Dual-Core processor for Internet surfing ! Also, the 10' model's phone app is blocked by the carrier, while it's not for the 7'...
But I digress !
Before to sign up to the plan, I'd like to take the pulse of the community. It's something I always do prior to purchasing a new device. I'm use to the HD2 orgy of Roms and OS and I must say that the less-furnished Development section for the Tab leaves me thinking. I don't doubt of the quaility of the ROMS but I wonder if devs are not already leaving the Tab's development for more recent Tablets and devices.
So...If you are a serial flasher like me, is the Tab a good invesmet ? I'd love to flash later CyanogenMod releases when there will be actual Tablet versions of it (for the moment, CM7 on a tablet is still in its early months) and of course Honeycomb or even better, Ice Cream Sandwhich. Will there be dev's at that moment ? Of course, I know it's not an easy question to answer but it's more about the community strengh until today actually...
Thanks and see you soon hopefully !
cm7 + tablet tweaks = win.
with roms, ill take quality over quantity, even tho there are only 3 2.3 roms, they are all badass.
the tab7 has been the best tech device ive ever owned, i have an ipad but it lives in the draw, its just way to big todo anything with other than using it in bed or on the toilet.
I suggest get the 7inch or wait for the new 7inch (who knows when that will come)
the only negative i have is that theres so many new devices out with dual core ect... but so far it hasnt stopped me from doing anything that these newer devices can do (you can play tegra games via chainfire) but eventually it will become an issue i guess.
The carrier matters.
More dev work is being done for the GSM variants at the moment. But spacemoose1 does have an alpha hc rom and dev continues in that.
Thank you for your anwser and I do agree about quality over quantity...
I'm aware of tablet tweaks from CM7, I already used them on my 4'3 HD2 screen but that not much in comparison of the many tweaks TouchWiz seems to bring to the Android 2.2 UI. Of course, overlay means slower device but oh well...
Is it possible to easily save/back up the stock Android Rom it will be shipped with in order to restore if I need to return it under warranty ?
Thanks !

Yeh, you can do a nandroid backup, or just find your stock firmware, from the website sam-firmware (i think thats it) or just brick it
Dear devs of the HTC One community,
I am on a carrier version (Verizon) all of what I believed to still be one of the greatest made the HTC One m7.
We are blessed such a vast array of roms, kernels, mods , etc, and because of that I don't think I'll ever get tired of this phone.
HOWEVER, there is one room that I'm very interested in and have been desperate to try out since its release and so far nobody been able to Port this rom over to the carrier variants of the m7, I am speaking of @sundream 's S-Rom w/ Beats,BoomSound,Harman Kardon JBL Audio Switcher. I am a HUGE Audiophile, and am DYING to be able to try this out,
A user named Kansas Boy was working on a carrier version of the rom and had said so far he had the rom booting up on all carriers except for Verizon, and I was his beta tester for Verizon. No matter what I tried or did, I couldn't get it to go past the boot animation, and I spent many many researching troubleshooting with no success. He then stated that he would be releasing the ROM minus Verizon support, however that was over a month ago, and there has been no word on it, and I believe it has since been abandoned.
I am BEGGING the great Dev Community here, for 1 of the Devs here to step up and try their hand at successfully making this rom available to the carrier bound users
Because of the differences in the partition layouts of the different m7 variants, the Working released version of SunDreams S-Rom only works for the WWE and AT&T variants if I'm not mistaken.
Is there/Are there ANY Dev's out there who would be able to / willing to attempt this? I would be MORE than happy to donate, please lemme know what u think.
To all the amazing developers out here, we have so many stock based roms for our OP3, but it would be really interesting to try out a different OEM Rom altogether. Can anyone please port the Samsung S8 or lets say LG g6 Rom for the OP3? I know many people will be interested in this. Thank you.
TouchWiz and LG UX are closed source ROMs, so in order to port them you should be REALLY good in reverse engineering, and port all the apps, the libs and the kernel components that as I said, are not open source. So the answer is no, I don't think anybody could port them.
Just buy one of these phones ??
even if it could be done, most developers may not want to
It'd be a major undertaking to port a Samsung rom to any device that isn't a Samsung. It's not impossible, but it'd require a great deal of work by a very capable developer. All in all, it just isn't worth it for the few that have the skill to pull it off.
I mentioned the same thing in the Q&A section. You'd be better off using a substratum theme.
If you want a samsung bloatware OS just buy a samsung.
whyyy???? why someone would like put lagwiz in a OP3?
That would be a bad idea !
Lol
this is not the first time someone requesting this. i simply cannot imagine someone wanting/needing this. it just doesnt make any sense. and i also cannot imagine people not knowing that this task isnt even possible.
Maybe try miui. If you're into that perverted type of version of Android

I would rather encourage an individual of this forum in case he came in with a request. When people can port chinese roms, why not s8. Rather than discouraging and commenting on whether he should buy s8 or lg g6 people should focus their efforts on trying to make this happen.

The problem isn't located at "When people can port Chinese ROMs", the problem is a technical one. Neither Samsung nor LG wants their stock ROM to be easily ported to other phones, that'll mean a huge loss for either of them, this would mean that their software can be easily replicated under a specific variations of hardware.
Additionally, there are also the facts that their stock ROMs is very difficult to port. MIUI, Lewa, and those "Chinese ROMs" you mentioned earlier has less "inner-working" changes compared to say, Samsung, who has added KNOX for example.
This does not stop there either, their stock ROMs can be optimised for a specific set of hardware and since OnePlus 3(T)'s hardware differs a lot compared to either Samsung or LG, it is hard to port the stock ROM without having the source code for them.
But I definitely agree with your last point; If we know we can't port it, why not tell that we can't instead of "Oh just buy an S8 / LG G6, bruh" or "why port these two crappy ROMs here?"

Do you know how Chinese ROMs are ported? If you're talking about MIUI, Xiaomi releases something called a patchrom, which is essentially part of the source code. This is why a lot of devices have unofficial MIUI ROMs.
Samsung's crappy version of Android is waaaay off from AOSP. They're partitions and bootloaders are extremely different from that of other normal devices. Most of the "TouchWiz" ports have only made it to other Samsung devices, and not for devices made by other OEMs. The only example I've seen of a functional TouchWiz port is with the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2, which got a port of TouchWiz LP, after being abandoned at Kitkat by Sammy.
So yes, it is an impossible and ridiculous request. There are few people in the world who can dream of achieving this, and unfortunately, they're not stupid enough to want a laggy, bloated OS on their smartphone.
"people should focus their efforts on trying to make this happen."
I'd love to see you work on this. It's easy to ask others to work when all you have to do is ask.

yes exactly i really hope somebody create a tpwr and rom because sources are out
It will be nice if this phone receives TWRP and custom roms.

Didn't it JUST launch globally today?
Let's give it some time.
i really hope somebody create a stable tpwr since sources are available and the most stable rom out there like omnirom or pixel experience
preferred omnirom
IMO I don't believe it will receive support anytime soon. Unless ROG was able to convince your standard Android enthusiast that this isn't just a gaming device. People that purchase this phone are mainly interested in one thing, gaming, not development. So, ROG has to convince those types that this device is just as good as those others.
It will be interesting to have custom roms for rog. waiting also

My thoughts exactly. Custom roms are awesome but they are generally made or ported to be used by a majority of the phones out there. If we got a custom rom ie. AOSP, who would code in the air triggers from scratch?
Having said that, the stock rom is quite good. I don't have the need to root it like I did with my Mate 20X to shrink down the gigantic icons/screen because by default Asus allows a lot of customization.

Apparently the American version doesn't have volte or voWi-Fi as well.. that, along with the fact that it doesn't support band 71, are big reasons why your normal or typical Android enthusiast/ developer is not going to purchase this device

So does this apply to the Tengent games (CN) version too? I am getting the cheaper CN version and then going to flash the WW (Global) Rom, so essentially I guess I am asking is this a hardware omission, or is it ROM (software) based?
And how does this typically affect say a normal phone user?
It might get an update. As for band 71, I personally don't care because I won't use it all.

As I understand it, it doesn't have to do with software or hardware, they just simply don't support volte of vowifi. In China, they do. So, it's not the device, but the companies choice. May be some restrictions that we aren't aware of, otherwise it doesn't seem like a very smart decision. I was all in until I heard this. 3G is going to be removed from our networks in the next few years, so voLTE is kind of mandatory. Even now, if I don't have voLTE, I can't make or receive calls. VoWiFi, that's beneficial if you're cell signal is low for whatever reason. Maybe you work below ground or in Faraday cage style buildings. Plenty of uses for it. As far as band 71, no, I probably don't need it. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't want it just in case. Always better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

This is wrong for TMO. It's in the SW. There's an option for volte carrier check on xiaomis phones. A simple dialer code disables this check, and volte works on TMO. I'm hoping there's a way we can do this on the rog 2. That, or a build.prop edit to enable it. There has to be a setting hidden that disables volte in us.

I've just been reading a little bit more up on it, and apparently, ASUS didn't pay the cell carriers in North America for provisioning costs. That's why it won't work. So, regardless of software, hardware or any other type of hackery, it won't work in North America.

So is this just a bad/dumb move by Asus or what? I mean I honestly don't know if these omissions will affect me, all I know is I still own a Samsung until I get the Asus and was always able to use my Samsung phone how I wanted to use it
Hi all, what do you think is 7 Pro 5G worst model due to NO support from custom roms? I can not find even one custom work to support this phone, and to be honest I would like to replace it asap for anything with AOSP support ;/

Got it debloated but how can you compare it to custom Rom and kernel?
Why would you state a phone is the worst model ever strictly based on a lack of custom ROMs? The availability of ROMs has nothing to do with the capability the phone model has. If you want custom ROMs, you could always do the work to make them. If you don't have the knowledge, there are plenty of devs that have provided help to many on this forum, and I'm sure that you could get help if you're willing to spend the time and put in the effort.

As oneplus phones are great for custom firmware and I always buy them because of it. In this case 5G model is just a piece of rubbish as there is literally NO support from devs. You say do it on my own? Yeah I would like to have few hours of spare time every day to play with it, but as I do not have that time I have to sell the phone and buy something "normal".

I understand your concern but if you look in the correct place TG you will find it. ??
What do you mean not compatible? Because bootloader locked? Or is the hardware different? I managed to unlock bootloader, but have not yet tried to flash a ROM. Are you saying a regular ROM will not work for the OP7 Pro just because it's the 5G version? (I don't need 5G anyway if that's the only problem with 5G OP7).
