The Android platform should have support for OCR, what is needed is a multi-task app for OCR services, or a simple Business Card Reader that store directly to contacts.
That would be awesome... I hope to see OCR of all kinds soon.
The barcode reader supports reading of datamatrix barcodes. Im sure OCR could be done.
I like the barcode reader, but no one uses the cot damn barcodes on there business cards.
Scan , add to contacts done. Its all there name address telophone number web address email. Added to contacts in 30 seconds

I still have about 200 of my old business cards and waiting for those to dwindle before I order a new stack... I will be putting on a barcode for someone to scan on the next one.

Which app supports the datamatrix?

Barcode scanner. It works perfectly. I showed it to a friend who has an iphone, He went onto iphones market and download iphones version. Which sucked in comparison, the iphone version you had to press on screen to take a photo, save, then click decode.
It would sit there for a minute or two then fail to decode.
the android one automatically decodes after its focused. As long as theres enough light and you keep stille enough. Decoded in a few seconds.
Its demo'd on the google android site.
OCR is one of the things I'd be interested in.
I'm debating making a GOOD financial app, one that supports budgets, multiple accounts, bills (with dates that they're owed), paychecks (with flexible hours, meaning for part time jobs where schedules change day to day...), etc.
One of the features I'd want to add would be an OCR reader for receipts. Scan the receipt once, it picks up any dollar amounts on it (as well as stuff like date/credit card account if it can find it), and the user just has to hit a couple buttons.
Still debating if I want to actually make it, the best money app out there atm seems to be FireWallet, but they're going to charge soon...

OCR application
Well, OCR technology applied in several fields, like business card, receipts, document and more. It is not only working at iPhone, Windows Mobile, but also Symbian, Android.
WorldCard Mobile is another app to make good use of this OCR technology, doing business card reader for iPhone. I knew this company is also developing for Android now.
I thought there is already a business card reader application.
This ROM is an example... (look at page 1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552274&highlight=business+card+reader
IIRC Google Goggles can perform namecard OCR, atleast on languages using Latin alphabet.
I think there's still room for a dedicated business card reader app. I tried Google Goggles with a couple of business cards and it was a bit clumsy in reading them.
I too tried google googles on some business cards.
It found some stuff, but missed most of it.
There is also the question of integration into your contacts.
Goggles does not do that.
ScanBizCards
I don't have an Android phone, so it's interesting to read the feedback on Google Goggles - and happy to read that some members feel there is still room for a specialized business card reader since I happen to be the maker of one, www.scanbizcards.com, available on the iPhone for now but will port to Android as soon as I have some time!
Besides doing a better job with the idiosyncracies of business cards, a specialized app can do much more than just scan the card.
Patrick
ya google goggles does that for sure but its still beta. so once they get all the bugs out that is one of the main features of that app.
here ya go
Here you go this is that bizcard apk: http://www.4shared.com/account/file/134939817/2d95066b/BizCardReader.html
Yep,
I have a business card reader app that came with my Hero.
Got to say it works very very well.....

Just put this on my phone. Works really well! I was surprised by how accurate it was. It is not perfect, but it is very good at tagging the information about 95% of the time.
Thanks for the link.
Earlier I said that goggles does not integrate into contacts. It turns out that the business cards I choose, were not scanning very well. Goggles does integrate, but not anywhere near as well as BizCardReader (the app above)
Bizcard was getting accurate info, repeatedly. Goggles was giving me a different output with every scan.
I am trying to find a simple method for storing GPS exif tags on images captured with my HTC Dream.
It seems that the camera application included with the Rogers retail ROM lacks the 'Save Location to Picture' setting included in other builds.
As there is no full ROM currently compatible with Canadian Rogers HTC Dream I am hoping I can replace the default camera application or perhaps find a second camera application with this functionality that I could install manually. Anyone know anything that might work for me?
My device is rooted.
Thanks
Sorry for the shameless self-bump but does anyone have any suggestions for automatic geo tagging with a Canadian Dream? Even a paid app?
I assume that canadians can buy paid apps right? Maybe one of these will help? Sorry just did a quick cyrket search
I too am interested in this. It seems that none of the ROMs with the new camera have the geo-tagging, so it's something that's been removed from it for some reason.
No app I've found will do it for you unfortunately.
Has anyone discovered another way to do it?
As an interim solution I have been using KOPIKS PhotoMapper in conjunction with My Tracks (Available on the Market)
http://software.copiks.com/photomapper/
Have My Tracks record your journey then export that track as a GPX (using the 'Save to SD' option in the app).
From here you can import the GPX along with any images captured and PhotoMapper will use the timestamp on the image to tag it with the corresponding LONG and LAT.
Though this is a little more of a roundabout way PhotoMapper makes it much faster than manual GeoTagging (ala Google Maps/Earth). This also works great if you are using a separate camera; just syncronize your camera and phone time and shoot away.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your reply!
It's not an ideal solution, but it's one I'll use for now, thanks! One suggestion I'd make, is to use Track My Life, since it uses much less battery, and you can leave it running permanently. The downside is that it only outputs KML files, so some sort of conversion is going to be necessary to import them to PhotoMapper.
First, thanks for any input. I have a N6 that I use on my business, which is retail arbitrage. Basically I find cheap stuff and resell it online at a profit. I have many apps devoted to scanning items to look them up online. Most of them also work with a bluetooth barcode scanner, but that is not always withe me or convenient to the situation.
I have found that the my primary app, called scoutify (requires subscription), is very hard to scan barcodes with using the camera. It uses libraries/software called redlaser as the barcode scanning component. I have used this app on many other devices, many much lower than the N6 with no issues.
I have read about the N6 having camera slowness issues, but this does not seem to be slowness. What happens as you bring in a barcode, the camera is constantly attempting to focus on the backgound items as the barcode does not fill up the frame. It will focus in and out many times. you have to constantly move the item to scan close too and away from the camera and hope it actually focuses on what you want. Redlaser, at least as it is packaged in this app does not have any options. You can touch screen to focus, but it does not help on the N6.
Does anyone know of any settings under the hood that can be adjusted to maybe change the cameras focus behavior?
I am pretty comfortable with a rooted phone and ADB so I can backup and test things, I just do not know enough about the camera to know if this is possible or where to begin.
Thanks again!
Guys
I have a very annoying issue with my MI 8 camera.
I have a couple applications which they have an in-app scanner functionality by using MI 8 camera to provide some services.
E.g. Home banking will give the possibility to scan a cheque and process it. To do so, the application launches the MI 8 camera which should frame the cheque and save the snap.
However this never happen as the camera is unable to hold the object (cheque) and take the picture of it.
The camera is launched normally by the app (camera permissions are enabled).
The issue is that the camera is not able to hold and take a snap of the object.
I thought it has something to do with this specific application however the issue still exist with other business applications I have installed which provide the same functionality i.e. camera scanning by taking images.
Any thoughts how to fix this issue?
Thanks
I'm using banking apps pretty often on my phone, do deposit and withdraw with QR code. It appears to be an issue with the application itself in your case, if drivers are OK.
