AT&T Note8 - OTG and GearVR not working suddenly - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hey Everyone,
Saw multiple posts but no actual solutions. OTG and GearVR suddenly aren't working on my Note8 - AT&T varient. No rooting or modding.
GearVR is Note8 version, OTG dongles are OEM Samsung and non-OEM, never dunked phone in water, BUT did pick it up with wet hands and got caught in the rain a few times.
Troubleshooting steps:
1. Tried OEM Samsung OTG that came in the box, tried third party USB-C to USB-A
2. Rebooting phone, updating phone, clearing cache (numerous times)
3. Tried another S8+ with GearVR and OTG - and working
4. Removing Oculus and Facebook apps and re-installing.
5. Plugging into a PC and Mac work fine, doesn't seem to be a port issue.
6. Cleaning port (blowing air and 91% rubbing alcohol)
Any suggestions on what to do next? Samsung Support keeps making me clear cache which isn't helping and not suggesting any warranty work.

I would take your device to a Samsung Service Center and let them take a look at it.

Can't disable fast charge, permanently broken micro-usb port?

I flashed this ROM as per instructions in the thread and after enabling fast charge, my usb port seems broken.
The ROM uses semaphore kernel and I enabled fast charging using semaphore script app. I tried it out and disabled it from the same app. It still shows disabled but neither of my computers will recognize my device (winXP and win7, neither one makes the typical sound when the phone is plugged in).
I have 3 data cables that all work fine on my Gateway tablet (acer iconia clone) on both computers, so I feel very certain that it is the device.
Some things I have tried so far to fix it based on various forum digging;
-enabled and disabled USB debugging mode (apparently usbd has to be on for mass storage mode in ICS)
-wiped NSTools settings with CMW recovery
-tried turning off fast charge with NSTools app ( cannot find it as an option)
-tried some command in Terminal Emulator ( su, then echo 0 > /sys/kernel/fast_charge?blah blah I forget what the exact command lines were but they were not successful)
-restored Nandroid backup of prior cm7 (almost shat as I bootlooped going back again to this ics ROM since I cannot use ODIN to fix it)
Thankfully I am running the ROM I believe I will stay with for awhile, I can access my phone with airdroid and I recall reading about a wifi adb one time but having USB Mass storage again would be a huge plus!
Yes I realize that I was stupid to enable Fast Charge mode that has in capital letters beneath the checkbox-USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!! But if anyone can help me I would be eternally grateful, I will even send you some beer money or donate to the charity of your choice as I am completely stumped by this problem.
Cheers
well FML if it wasn't the data cable. I have multiple LG and Blackberry cables that work with every other device in the household (we have 7 or 8 total devices).
I found my Samsung cable under the couch and gave it a try, and it worked. I must have flashed with ODIN the first time using the samsung cable and didn't take note of which one I used. The only difference between the Samsung cable is that the micro-usb end of it really snaps into place one plugged into an actual Samsung device.
I hope somebody is helped by this in the future. When you think you have tried everything (including turning it off and on again ), try another data cable.

Also having this issue with Semaphore and fast charge. Will try another cable. Dirty flashed AOKP to the stock kernel that has no fast charge option and it still doesn't work. Searching for my samsung cable right now. Sadly this BB microUSB cable was the only one that worked with odin with no issue.
Hi, did you find any solution to this issue? I've been experiencing the same problem on my Nexus 4
Edit: Okay. Just read your post properly to find out that using a different cable solved your problem. But mine just won't work no matter what cable I use

Note 5 USB Port Not Working Except for Slow Charging

I have researched the issue of my Note 5just being able to slow charge via USB, and not be able to do anything else. I have tried all the proposed solutions I found, but can not fix the issue. The things that I have noticed to not work are:
Fast Charge: Cable and USB charging is detected, but cannot fast charge. I have tried the same charger and cable on other S7 edge, and it able to Fast charge. Fast charging is enabled in the battery menu
Connect to PC: Whenever connected to any PC, the PC shows “USB Device Not Recognized." I have the latest version of Smart Switch and the latest drivers. I have tried multiple computers and windows 7, 8 and 10. I have also tried to connect to the PC when the phone is in Download and Recovery mode and get the same error.
Connect to any OTG peripheral: Nothing is detected by the Note 5. Same cable working on other device.
Connect to Gear VR: When connecting to Gear VR, it gives the chime, the black screen with the little x in the corner appears for a second and then it goes back to the home screen.
What I have tried to do to fix:
Different cables/chargers/USB ports
Checked if any of the 5 pins are broken in the cable
I have lifted the tongue of the charging port in the phone via tooth pick
Done a factory reset
Any insight on this issue would be appreciated.
Thanks

Have you tried different 2A charging bricks? A regular 1A charger would still take a long time to fully chargeNote5.
You could also be looking a bad USB-port or a faulty battery, both of which would be covered under warranty provided no large physical damage is evident on your device.
Thanks for the reply. I have tried the original Samsung charger, 2A, 1A, and 0.5A charging bricks, but the phone shows either Cable or USB charging.
About the faulty battery, will that cause the PC and other peripherals to not detect the phone?

Same happened to me two days ago. I restored an old backup, done a factory reset and restored my actual rom again and problem solved. Idk what the problem was related to. Try wiping cache again, maybe it helps.

I have done a wipe from TWRP, but the issue was not fixed. I can not change ROMs etc as I can not connect the Note 5 to the PC via USB cable, even in TWRP.
Was your phone just not Fast Charging, or it wasn't being recognized by the PC, etc.
Thanks
Actually y have the same problem, unfortunately I don't have root access.
Try the app called USB host check, maybe they can help you.
Is not possible to me because the PC don't detect the phone connection and obviously I can't make the root.

I have the same issue tried the same fixes. No luck. Have you found a solution please?
I ultimately had to change the motherboard. Changing the charging port did nothing.
However, I suspect it was a corrupted firmware. If you can somehow flash a latest stock firmware and check, that would be great.
In trying to fix the firmware I had corrupted Stock ROM. Since I could only use WiFi to transfer files via WiFi FTP type apps, and I didn't have a working ROM backup on my phone, after the Stock ROM was corrupted, I could not upload any new files to flash with TWRP so I had to change the motherboard.

If you see the "USB Device Not Recognized" message when you connect to the PC, then I think the charging port is fine. It is some issue with the firmware as phone is not able to provide the correct PID and VID to the peripheral devices to identify itself. The charging port and its circuit doesn't hold that info. If possible, try to flash a stock firmware from TWRP as ODIN will not work (I am not aware of the exact procedure). Just MAKE SURE you have make a backup of your current setup and leave it on the phone as if you have an unsuccessful flash, you will not be able to use ODIN or ADB as your cable will not work.

I've messed up, I've already clear the cache, Dalvik , Data and System without having backup Rom/firmware in my internal memory. I've try using OTG. Still no hope. Twrp won't regconized it. :crying:
If there no hope to solve this... I think ,I will sell my note5 for replacement parts , sadly.

I got into the same problem. I then ordered a replacement motherboard from China and installed it. After that it is working flawlessly.
I'm in same predicament pc won't recognize phone and charging is extremely slow. Attempting to restore old twrp backup or flash older firmware. Crossing fingers

Are you still interested in selling the phone?
Same problem but with 2 phones
My note 5 and my friends S6 edge were totally fine, but on our farm (which now i found that has a low voltage eccentricity at around 190 V), we put them on my charger (the original charger that came with the note 5) and both of our phones now have the same problem, they charge very slowly ( up to 6 hrs for a full charge) and are not detected by any pc using 3 cables that work with other phones normally, the charger itself is okay, and works well with other devices (at home of course, and fast charge works with other devices).
I have tried everything, restart, safe mode, delete cache, charge while its off.. with a number of chargers and cables, it does not make any difference.
If any one knows how to fix this, your help is appreciated.
Mine is a little different, My Note5 is not charging at all via USB but works fine with wireless charging. In short, even if i plugged it via PC or via charger, it does not charge anymore.
But I noticed something, when I am in TWRP recovery, my USB OTG drive is readable and when i am in download mode, Odin reconizes the Note5's COM port. I did a reflash of the stock ROM hoping this will do the trick. but it failed. still does not charge at all via USB.
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance. all answers appreciated.
this seems like you have faulty usb port .

Dropped my ROG phone II screen black - how can I recover docs before sending to asus?

Hi guys
super annoyed this morning. I dropped my rog phone II ultimate onto a concrete floor and now the screen is black with the odd flashing like #devastated!
I'm going to send to asus for repair to keep warranty.
My issue is how can I recover some data on the phone? I've plugged it into my PC it will pick the device up. However a prompt usually comes up on the phone screen which I can't press.
I was thinking of buying an asus pro dock or just a cheap generic usb c to HDMI cable to see if I can get into the storage this way but the other problem I have is finger print security is set up on the device!
such a nightmare can anyone give me some advice on the way forward?
regards
phuckstar
to activate asus RMA you have to tick a box accepting asus will erase all data before you can proceed with the return.
Hi all
I find my own solution and post here to help anyone with similar strife. so here goes.
you will need a usb-c to HDMI hub with at least two usb ports, one for keyboard, one for mouse. Then you can log in via password, save any data, enable usb debugging etc etc.
you connect hub into the side usb-c port of the phone, (not the red one)
you can plug the bottom one into pc and now you can acknowledge the usb transfer request nag pop up.

Gear VR not connecting to S8

I bought a used Gear VR for cheap and was going to use my old S8 to run it. After much searching and checking I know I have followed the directions for initial setup correctly, but nothing I did caused the headset to install or activate the Oculus app. I at first thought maybe it had something to do with the phone, but using the iVRy installer from steam I was able to successfully install the Oculus for Gear VR app and pair the Gear VR remote control. Yet plugging in the phone to the headset does nothing. I tried fiddling with the apps (force stopping apps, reinstalling, etc...) and trying cleaning the phone connector, but I think a major clue is that with the phone in the headset and a power cable plugged into the aux type c connector on the headset it doesn't charge the phone... so I assume I'm just not getting a connection with the headset at all.
So I guess my question is (1) does anyone have a better theory and (2) does anyone have tips to repair this issue?
Update: I was able to try my S8 in another headset that was a year newer than the one I bought. It also was not recognized by the phone, so it does seem to be the phone that is the problem. I'll post what version of android and of the Oculus for Gear VR app I'm using a bit later when I can take the time. Just to have here as data points. Maybe it's the phones USB C port pins?
I have same problem, I have note 9 and gearvr sm-r325 and I can't connect

[SM-973F/DS - Exynos] USB issue, no data connection to PC possible

A few days ago I bought a used S10 with Android 11 (Build: RP1A.200720.012.G973FXXU9EUA4, Stock ROM).
The previous owner rooted the S10 via Magisk because he had problems with Android Auto and his car stereo.
Root didn't solve the problem and he removed root again.
He couldn't close the bootloader afterwards, so the bootloader is still open. He said he didn't have installed/flashed TWRP or any custom rom..
Since then, the USB interface no longer works properly.
No data connection to the PC can be established, only charging works.
All devices that are connected to the S10 via an OTG cable are recognized, but only for charging. Other options in the S10 USB settings cannot be activated.
But, the connection to a screen via a USB-C to HDMI adapter (DELL DA200) works without any problems. The S10 recognizes the monitor directly as an external display and the monitor also shows the screen content of the S10.
I think it's a software problem, right?
I tested different USB-C cables, several OTG cables with different PCs and notebooks. No PC/notebook recognizes the S10 and no other USB device is recognized by the S10..
Is there a way to re-flash the S10 with Stock ROM and close the bootloader?
Maybe via ADB over Wifi?
Or is there another way to restore the data functionality?
I absolutely need the data functionality because I want to fly my Dji drone with the S10.
Greetings and thanks in advance
My problem is now "solved".
Yesterday I went into donload mode via WLAN ADB and locked the bootloader again.
The result was that the S10 only booted into download mode.
**** happens.....
Fortunately, I was able to buy a completely destroyed S10 (display and back cover) nearby for little money and convert the mainboard into my S10.
Thanks to everyone for the many input and the many tips.
