Hello. I have a Kindle Fire HD that I need to root so I can get it back to normal working order.
A few things about this tablet:
-Will not hard reset
-Cannot get into settings
-Parental controls are on but unable to access due to inability to get into settings
I've even stumped the Amazon tech support guy.
Now, I want to attempt to root it. I've never done this before, and I've scoured the forums looking for a step-by-step guide on how to do this (with no success, everything is all over the place, and no-one seems to use the same 2 tools, so no guide is actually helpful).
I have the adb drivers and fastboot in one folder, and have Windows 10 in test mode, but thats as far as I've gotten.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Everyone, first post after several hours of research and first attempt to root and flash a device.
A little about the device, it is a Kindle Fire (non-HD)
I did a factory reset on the device before doing anything.
I followed the instruction i found on this forum to install Kindle Fire Utility 9.6
Following this, I downloaded and installed, JB-AOKP_otter_unofficial_Oct-17-12.
I followed this install with: gapps-jb-2012-0726-signed
Everything was going great. All of the sudden I got a pop-up stating Process com.android.phone has stopped. As fast as I press "OK" it returned.
The only resolution I have been able to get is to force the tablet back into TWRP and restore it, as once it appears there is no way around it.
has anyone encountered this issue and found a solution?
Thanks in advance, I am new to rooting (first shot ever) and eager to learn what I can about it.
Adam
Good morning,
As a follow up, I tried to re-install the Android system. Somehow I managed to delete too much by way of wiping the system and basically locked the KF up until I was able to mount it as a USB drive. I placed the OS file back in the directory (the original KF software was gone). I reloaded the OS and seemingly it works correctly.
Up to this point I have not had the error return, so the only real change was the complete removal of the KF software. The unfortunate part, is if I were to ever want to sell the KF I have no way to return it to stock, Atleast not that I have figured out yet.
Now on to searching for a volume control, that is easy to use....

That's why you need the factory cable; It's used to boot the Kindle directly into FastBoot mode. From my understanding, the only way a factory cable would fail is if the bootloader is damaged.

I will try to answer to the best of my ability (as I am still a noob with the Kindle HD). If anyone more knowledgeable is reading, you're input would be much appreciated
- Using the factory cable: I think you need to plug in the cable to the Kindle HD (powered off). Then plug in the other end to the computer, and it should power on to FastBoot mode. As far as what to do in FastBoot mode and what commands to use, you will probably have to ask someone more knowledgeable than me.
- Bootloader: When people say 'the bootloader is damaged' they are most likely referring to the fact that the device cannot accept FastBoot commands. When you turn on the Kindle, the bootloader decides whether to turn on the kindle in normal mode or fastboot mode. So if you can't get into fastboot mode, then the bootloader is not functioning properly for some reason.
As far as how you would damage the bootloader? Well... Iike I said before I'm a noob with the Kindle so I can't really answer this. From what I've read, the most common mistake is that people have flashed something onto the Kindle Fire HD 7 that was meant for another version of the device.
I suggest you to try working with one of the senior members/developers to troubleshoot and fix your problem.

thanks for all your help its been great ill let you know if the fast-boot lead works unfortunately the stock charging/data lead did not work because it does not supply power to 4th pin like the fastboot leads do to enter fastboot. im normally a wiz with android but the kinle fire hd 7 is one of the worst tabs i have ever owned. im not sure if you are familiar with the AOSP but part of the rules and agreements manufacturers make with Google if they choose to use android is that the system is open source and the ability for advanced super users to modify and customize android how they want it not how the device manufacturer puts it e.g. apple ios (closed source) the manufacturer is allowed to add a boot-loader and stock recovery to prevent accidental damages like wiping partitions etc.... and due to people complaining a lot of manufacturers have not included a boot-loaded unlock tool like htc dev web site but unfortunately you have got amazon...who have locked the boot-loader, disabled button combination and installed a very minimal recovery with just factory reset and reboot, this is actually against the AOSP and i do not know why Google have not done something about this its very frustrating for all of us we have to make our own system recovery tools because amazon do not include one and other such features like 2ndinit boot-loader < (thanks for that) they have actually refereed to the device os as kindle os when its an android 4.0.1 SDK build they make me so angry now i have literally got a £159 brick! i understand its an ebook but they agreed to install android as the default os so they should do it properly haha!!
but im sure in the end google will do something about it an sue them for millions well fingers crossed haha
I've spent the weekend attempting to master the art of rooting my Kindle Fire HD 7". I managed to root the device via KF First Aide. I was also able to install TWRP and custom ROMS. I has some issues and went back to the stock Kindle software. I once again rooted and attempted to install TWRP via KF First Aide. The Kindle went into boot loop. I was able to get the device into Fastboot with a factory cable. Before I could take any further steps to fix the problem the screen went black and will not turn back on. I've tried charging via wall charger, USB and Factory cable and still nothing. Is there a solution out there? I've tried searching for an answer on the forums and I've found similar posts, but no solutions.
I've found information for using the USB boot trick, but they all reference Kindle 1's or 2's. Noting mentioned the Fire HD. Will the same process still work for the HD 7"?
I've also DL'd the KF Unbrick app but I cannot find mention if it works with the KF HD 7".

There are stickies in the Q&A forums for all Kindle Fires, including one in the Original Kindle Fire's General Discussion forum, that explain your situation and remaining options (or lack thereof).
So to clarify what I have just read in the FAQ
Q14: How will I know if I have a bricked 2nd generation Kindle Fire that cannot be restored?
The device will not show any outward signs of life; no display, no sound, and no LED. The device may still get warm when plugged in or turned on and Windows users may see an OMAP4 device in the device manager. Again, short of sending it back to Amazon, there isn't anything that can be done.
My options are none at all unless I send it to Amazon?
I loaded the wrong boot loader on to my 7" kindle fire HD. Now it's dead. No power, nothing. I know some people were trying to find a solution but I haven't found anything. Please help!

There may or may not be a way to fix it with some soldering, sdcard reader and a Linux live cd, i haven't been as active in the community lately so im not sure how the efforts went with the 7" model, seems like we had it working on all the models except that particular one last i checked. Outside of that a hardbrick is not recoverable.
Hello,
I was following this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909 to put a new rom on my fathers kindle, i went step by step and got all the way to here http://prntscr.com/80kv3i but i cant get into TWRP, the logo never turns blue and just constantly loops with the orange kindle fire logo (no animation)
http://prntscr.com/80kuhj This is what my kindle looks like in my device manager, so i think i have the drivers installed correctly. but my computer or ADB never recgonizes the kindle, i think because it never boots up enough to recgonize it. It recgonized it before but i think because it is not booting up long enough the computer or adb wont recgonize it.
Please ill take any advice I can. and i would be willing to pay someone 10 bucks or something on paypal for help with this. Or bitcoin, or an amazon gift card. walk me through this and help me out with this and i will be forever in your debt.
Im guessing i need to order a factory cable right? I feel if i can get into fastboot mode that would open up all the doors i need and i could do what i wanted with it.
Thank you in advance.
So i'm not sure what the problem is with the thread you used as this is like the 3rd or 4th post i've seen with people saying this thread messed up their device. So first off if you can't access Fastboot through a command window(which i assume you can since you can access ADB) then watch this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ccUcPR2Mko
but again i'm assuming you already have that so just ahead and skip it, it's just a precautionary.
You'll need to be able to get into fastboot mode, either on your own or through a factory cable($10 off amazon)
http://www.amazon.com/Fastboot-Motorola-Factory-Atomic-Market/dp/B00KYVEM1I
from there follow this guys guide and i think it should help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254
Hope i've helped!
