Can't determine 5th Gen fw version - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have older fire 5th gen, from maybe 2015-16, virgin, never wifi connected, no firmware (fw) updates. Would like to root/rom. I know I should first identify the fw before proceeding, but can't find it. Settings>Device Options>System Updates does NOT show anything; it just goes back to the settings page. I"m guessing the fw is 5.2 or 5.3-ish . How do I verify what it is?
thanks

Firmware version / update help

So Feeling a bit thick atm.
I just bought 2 of these from Carphone Warehouse in UK yesterday for my kids birthday. They are both Sim Free unlocked, one is blue and one is black
However they are both on different firmwares ... the Blue one is on B179 and the Black one is on B115 ... also looks like the colour temperature defaults are different on the different phones.
Checking for updates reveals there are none available for either of them. If I understand this forum correctly I shouldn't expect to see any OTA updates being available since the only ones available in the UK are the ones for the Vodaphone locked versions ... is that correct ?
Am I right in saying I should be able to install the Firmware finder, select the B179 build, run the check with imei, start in app proxy, configure the proxy settings in the wifi and then follow the normal OTA update process from B115 to B179 ?
The reason I ask is because I tried these steps this morning and it failed with a checksum error. Did I do something wrong ?
Or would it be simpler to go back to Carphone Warehouse and ask for a new device ?
Managed to get it to go further trying B125 but I stopped watching and when I came back it had rebooted and was still running B115.
Talking to myself here ... finally got them both updated with a B191 build.

I would appreciate it too.
I don't think I did anything special that isn't documented else where on this forum, the trick was finding a firmware that worked.
But for reference :
* Install Firmware Finder on each phone went to settings and enabled the "Show Packages for current region" and "use simple firmware list".
* Go down the list of firmwares checking the availability with IMEI. (I only tried the ones that said FullOTA-MF and I believe the one I got to work was the on that was 105838 but I'm not 100% sure on that)
* Find one that that says "Firmware approved for installation models for installation: PRA-LX1C432B191" NB there were a couple that said PRA-L31-hw-euRA-LX1C432Bxxx as well but the B125 version I tried said that and failed to install.
* Press the in app proxy button
* Goto phones wifi settings, long press the network you are connected to and modify the settings -> set proxy to localhost port 8080.
* Go to the phones settings -> update firmware page and update as normal.
Extra credit step :
* Once the download has started hit pause then go back to your network settings remove the proxy and then resume the update download. (this was due to reports I'd seen of troubles downloading via the proxy and one attempt I'd made that ended in failure due to a checksum error which is basically a download fail)

Not a clue ... never going to use that function ... these were just as cheap as I could find (but decent and from a reasonably well known brand) smartphones for my kids

Can't Update System Software

I just got brand new Xperia X Performance that came with 6.0.1, and I'm trying to figure out why I can update it. It's unlocked but not rooted, basically right from the factory as far as I know.
When I go into Software Update in the phone's settings, it says "Your device already has the latest available system updates."
When I use the Sony app on my PC it says my system software is up to date.
I actually can't find anything about this issue, anybody here have any ideas?
Thanks!
try downloading and running xperifirm, find out if your region has the update at all, you should be able to update atleast to 7 anyway
There are a few variants that are considered as internal units or something like that and they don't get OTA updates, also HK units were stuck on 7 for some reason last time I checked. Mine is a french model, and yesterday I received the april security patches while the global variant got it two months ago

Thanks for the reply.
Here's a screenshot of Xperiafirm. https://ibb.co/dUCN3T
I'm in Canada, though I'm on Freedom Mobile, not Rogers or Bell. I don't think my carrier ever sold this phone, and I'm not sure what would happen if I flashed 8.0 made for Bell or Rogers phones.
Ideally I'd like 7.1.1 Canadian generic for Xperia X Performance, but I can't seem to find that anywhere.
I've also never done this so I don't really know what I'm doing, and don't want to void my warranty!
Thanks for you help!!
Good the ROMs that you see for Canada are all latest 8.0 with May security patches and maybe your phone is one of these and the updates just got stucked for some reason.
First you have to check what kind of model you have to check this, to do so you should open the dialler and type
*#*#7378423#*#*
From the service menu you should select -> Service Info -> Software Info and look for Customization Version:
As I said mine is a french model so it states 1302-9342_R2E your should be something different but only the first 8 numbers matter
then look this number in Xperifirm if yours is everything different from Internal Unit (second column from the screenshot) then there is a easy way to try and update without loosing your warranty
First there is always a risk! But I have done this a few times for my Xperia U and Xperia M5 and had no problems at all.
Do a backup - contacts...everything you need as it will delete them
charge the phone to at least 80%
then you should go to the Xperia Companion and do a software repair, not update but repair
It should install the latest version for your phone but it shows the version it installed only when it's finished...
Even if it has not installed the latest update then just connect the phone to your wifi/LTE and try the OTA updates again (could take up to an hour)
This is the safest way that will not void your warranty in any way but will delete your info (contacts, pics..etc. ) so do a backup prior
And if possible use a laptop with a working battery as even a 1 second glitch in the grid could cause the phone to get bricked
And if your phone is imported from China and the customization number is considered as an Internal Unit the only way you could get 7.0 or 8.0 is by flashing and another ftf file as the ones for Bell Canada or Rogers, there are actually some ROMs uploaded in XperiaBlog
there could be some in XDA but I have not search for any

Thanks so much for the reply...I discovered the version of Android installed on my phone is a version meant for Journalists/Reviewers/Commercial use, and can not be updated. I just got a refund for the 3-year warranty portion of my purchase after pointing this out to them. So after the 90 day warranty that came with it runs out, I'll be able to do anything I feel like with this device.
I'll be looking for a safe way to install 7.1.1 hopefully, and if not then 8.0. There seem to be less issues with 7.1.1, but there's really only one way to find out: when I start using it.
I'll definitely need a point in the right direction when it comes to that though. I understand Sony has an official flashing tool, and you have to unlock the bootloader (which is supported on my phone even with this version). But I haven't done it before and don't know how.

so try OXM

Thank you and I know I'm asking very basic questions here, it's just so simple with a Pixel and I really don't want to brick the Note.
What you are saying is that it doesn't matter the region I pick, the Note 9 will continue to work as an "international" phone where my two Canadian providers and Google Pay will continue to work? I have XSP right now as region so if my phone is set to Singapore and I can use Google pay in Canada, one doesn't prevent the other from working.
I can also see that versions ending in "ARJ1" are available from samfirm and the "J" would mean it includes October patches if I understand everything right.

familiarize your self with what is a snapdragon and an exynos and the different phone models pertaining to each then bricking won't be an issue. anyways ODIN usualy wont let you flash something that is not compatible.
yes J is October and for google pay, usually its supported pretty much wide spread. samsung pay is an other story and is the more coveted of the 2 'pays'. but since you're after Google pay, it should still be working.
just remember that you cant downgrade bootloaders so be sure of your intentions because you cant revert back to a lesser revision.

Thank you, that's a very good point. I know Samsung can be slow to update to begin with so I was looking for ways to be at least not in a situation where my phone is the last to get the slow updates. To have an expensive flagship phone that still can't apply the September updates is disappointing. I have manually flashed my pixel often because the "check for update" would not give me an update so that's not usually a problem for me. I also liked how the pixel has very few customization options compared to the Note 9, that's fewer options to reconfigure after a fresh flash!

I applied the update from today (in the stock firmware thread) and I was a bit concerned as this was a first flash but everything went well. I have to say as nice as it is to like a phone "stock" like the pixel, having customization option is good. Also it will discourage me from doing full wipes all the time because it takes more time to reconfigure!
Thank you for your help today, I really had a hard time figuring out which country/region I should flash.

SM-N950U1, installed Pie Beta. Now phone wont stay connected to cellular network.

SInce the install I have been in a LTE, 3g, roaming, no service random loop. Wifi works fine thankfully.
I have checked for further updates, toggled airplane more back and forth multiple times.
Also checked for PRL and Profile updates with no luck.
Carrier is Sprint. Any other suggestions from the community?

There is no "Pie bootloader." Samsung has not yet updated the bootloader version. The leaked Pie builds and the official Pie beta is still on bootloader v5, so you can easily downgrade back to Oreo. Now. Once Pie is officially released, they will likely upgrade the bootloader.

The N950U1 is 100% compatible with Sprint. It supports all the Sprint bands. Sounds like maybe an APN issue. You should check those settings to make sure they are correct. A factory reset may also fix it.

Windows 10 is a yes...unsure if its a USB3 port. I have tried every port on the PC and 2 different USB cables. It does show added. It allows me to add the 4 files. Once I click start, it usually errors out within seconds with an error such as SW REV Fail then has I believe device # and a binary # on the error code. I can get this tonight if needed.
I did a factory reset last night, was a no go.
Can you recommend a legit location for accurate APN info?

As far as a source for the APN. I would just google Sprint APN settings. It may even be on Sprint's website, or you can call Sprint CS.
For your ODIN failure. That's an easy fix for that error code. You are trying to downgrade to an Oreo build that is TOO old. It has to be a newer Oreo build with bootloader v5. Just download the SamFirm tool (Google is your friend) and use it to download the most recent Sprint firmware. For model use SM-N950U and for Region I believe it's either XAS or SPR. I can't remember. Then flash it with ODIN.
But the Pie beta SHOULD work with Sprint. There's something else going on there.

If you do not know if you are using a 3.0/3.1 USB port, you should refrain from doing such technical activities. You break your device and now it's up to the good folks here to spoon feed you a fix. Very irritating. I'm going with you are not using the official Odin to flash stock firmware. Do not use the patched Odin for anything except flashing Pie build. Sigh. Pull your SIM Card and reinsert. Should fix network issues.

Love the condensing tone, really helps make your point. Ive had little problem in the past flashing. This one had me stumped. As to the usb port, it's my wife's laptop, so I wasn't paying attention. Seeing as the guide that is posted here made no mention of usb type or windows version, I assumed there was no issue as long as Odin saw and added the phone. I am using official Odin, thanks. I pulled the sim already, no change.

SOLVED: Full mobile 4G+ data signal, but no data comes through

Hi everyone
I have a strange problem. I bought the "International" version, which was of course the Tencent with a flashed ROM. Although it was sold as "International" hehe
I didn't have Google Pay working and I've flashed the 1703 together with fingerprint, re-locked it down after and then updated with the latest firmware from the Asus website. (Google Pay works now)
Version WW-16.0631.1908.21
I now see that even though I have a FULL 4G+ signal. Calls come through normally etc. but the internet on mobile data simply doesn't work.
Anybody have any advice what else I could do?
EDIT:
It was a simple APN problem

I just googled what my mobile phone carrier APN was and entered it instead of the wrong one.
You can find the one in the phone by simply going to settings > network and internet > mobile network -> APN ( Access Point Names )
I just started having this issue yesterday! Phone has been working great for over a month then all of a sudden 4g shows it's on and connected but no mobile data coming through! My APN is correct, and I'm using Straight Talk through the TMobile network... Still haven't been able to fix it.
Same issue here internet connection dropping
I wonder if T-Mobile is doing some "dry runs" before they officially light up their 5G network on December 6th. (src: https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/4...d=WMM_TMO_P_19NETWRK5G_91WOGGGY1WERV94JC18747)
I am having same issue. Adding APN works for few hours. Then drops out. What to do? Did you guys find any solution?
Assalam alaykum
I suffered from dropping internet dropping connection
The solution was APN
Go to settings > network and internet > mobile network -> APN ( Access Point Names )
click the ( Access Point Names ) and you will find many APN setting Depend on your internet provider
Click one of them and then and on far top right option button click (delete APN)
