By "stock rom" do you mean vanilla ? , then why did you get a samsung galaxy device? Specially a note series one? Better get a pixel or something like it, why getting a samsung galaxy note device, to later downgrade it?

I have never understood why people do this.
They want some high end phone first. Then suddenly learn about custom roms and are like i want to flash this now.
Better donate the extra money to devs here instead of spending stupidly.
I'm just adding my sentiment. If you want stock Android, get a Pixel device or Motorola or Nokia or almost anything else. You buy a Samsung device for the features they add. If you don't like or use those features, then don't buy something for $1,000 just to essentially cripple it afterwards.

Lineage 15.1 was released yesterday for the note 8, it is in alpha stage though.
Clean Android not only reduces these devices in terms of function (S Pen, Iris, gestures, etc), but also removes the appeal of Sammy phones. I'm using Pie on my z2 Force, as well as my Pro 3. Whilst both have active development, my N8 is the new king on the hill.
Anyway, it's best to buy another phone like the Moto Z4, Poco F1, Pixel, or Essential for plain Android.

I think that some people are just plain stupid. They don't relise that most of the features of Stock Android come from other android OEM skins. Just because Stock Android is simple doesn't make it better. Even 3rd party Custom OSes don't support the same features on a Note device.

Couldn't agree more on this. I bought my note 8 after i have used a note 8 port rom on my j7 2016.
And honestly i will prefer the note this way and i haven't even rooted yet. I miss viper4android so much but atleast we have Dolby atmos in N8.

Exactly, you buy a note device for what i gives not what you can mod it into using a custom rom. Root and xposed is an other thing, but custom rom, that too an AOSP ? Completely dumb people out there.
I think it is about choice, not stupidity, like it's said a couple of times here.
Let people do what they want with their phone, like you do.
The thing is i am a university student and thought that i would use the pen.. turned out i didn't use it nor did i use any of the other features..
Second i am not from the US so pixel is not an option unless i would pay around 100 to 200 extra dollar to get it without a warranty.. this goes to the oneplus..
Other thing is the samsung devices are premium with good camera and great displays which is important for me..

You do know that once you install a custom OS on the Note. The camera quality goes down. As custom OSes do not have the same camera optimisation software as the Samsung Stock OS.
I was planning to use the pixel camera app

Of course yo would, that is the point, once you install a stock android,, the camera will no longer be driven by the samsung software, exactly what iceepyon told you, the samsung hardware is specifically constructed to work efficiently with samsung firmwares
Wow
A person asks about a custom vanilla rom, and look at some of the answers. So glad to live in 2019 when XDA posts are turned into youtube comments on taylor swift videos.
People are not "dumb or stupid" if they're looking for customization options on XDA. They're maybe "wrong" in some cases. Just tell them why.
To answer your question:
These days there are too many flagships and midrange phones out there. Also The oems use different hardwares and barely release their source codes and drivers. Plus, stock roms are way more feature rich and fluid than before. For all these reasons the development of vanilla based roms is limited and less reasonable for most phones. Except pixel phones and Android one phones. Even there, all different roms are lineage-based and basically the same, with same features and same bugs! But different visuall traits!
There is a Lineage os for note 8.0 but in very early stages. About other custom roms (stock based), they do a great job in terms of features and removing so called bloatwares, but personally I recommend you staying on stock because unlike few years ago, stock roms get you better performance, features, battery life, etc. I'm currently using pixel 2 and note 8 and trust me, you get bored by plain android!

Now I'm going to watch Taylor Swift music videos and read the comments, when I get home.
Am I going to need to root the pixel 4 XL I just picked up in order to achieve the most benefits out of the device? how easy is this device to route as I have absolutely never done rooting before is it foolproof?
from what I heard if I do go the option of rooting the device I would have to install updates manually and flash a bunch of ROMs every time I got an update and this concept of flashing ROMs seems very tedious. Bear in mind I've got no experience with routing so maybe flashing a ROM is in this difficult as I'm thinking it is.
Also is there an actual third-party theming engine that would be able to theme third-party apps on the pixel yet? On my note 10 plus I use hex plus theme engine and was wondering if there was an alternative for non-rooted pixel devices?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

any eta to something like lineage?
This seems so much better than a pixel 4a/OP 7t and within 100 dollars used....I am returning my pixel 4a due to the poor battery life compared to my gs8 that its replacing.
This phone seemsl like better value than the pixel 4a

Not gonna lie, I don't understand the ongoing interest in rooting/customs ROMs. The last time I rooted a phone was a Galaxy Note 2 - and then only because it had stopped receiving updates, and the custom ROM used a newer version of Android. With a new phone like the S20 FE, it just seems you stand to lose much more than you could possibly gain (e.g., Samsung pay, monthly security updates, full Android updates) - I just don't get it.

I was gonna reply yesterday that I wouldn't put a custom rom like lineage on a new phone that's still getting support. that would be moving from 99% functionality to maybe 75 - 80%.
that said I would root for things like adaway, v4a and minminguard and if the support was there I would replace the stock rom with a stripped down version with extra features like GCam. if the support was there the monthly security updates and continuing Sammy releases could be flashed just as easily as update zips. after the first 3 years all bets would be off, AOSP all the way.
I will never care about Knox, if an employer wants me to have a secure phone for work they can provide one. this phone is mine.

1. they can security patch your ****t AFTER you root, from what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong
2. Some of us like security for a number of reasons (ie travelign to autocratic countries where there is no personal privacy)
3. Far easier to have hard backups and restores of phones. I get a new phone? I just titanium restore it. Some of us don't like sharing data with the govt.
4. you ever try to pixelize and de-bloat a samsung stock phone? It's a nightmare.
a couple of days ago I saw that the FE 5G was just about to go on-sale in India, hopefully that means a few more devs may come to this forum.
I'm excited for development on this device and I thoroughly enjoy vanilla Android and custom ROMs.
I have more resources to play with typically and I can overclock or underclock my CPU/GPU for best performance and battery. Everything can be customized.
Maybe I could have gotten another device that isn't bloated but this was my only option.
If I had a test FE 5G I would start baking some things up. This is my only phone and I would be out of work without it so, no go testing on my own.
the GSI roms must be pretty close to making workable, I'm sure there'd be many happy testers available.
EDIT: a reddit user has claimed to have flashed the Havoc rom GSI. I've asked for him to share the procedure he followed. if he does that's 2 or 3 GSI roms we can use if nothing else.
EDIT2: seems he just followed guidance from the thread itself and was able to just flash the GSI via TWRP. unlocked bootloaders are a must and there are bugs, being fingerprint reader not working and no video capture @60fps
anyone here that's desperate to try another rom can flash TWRP and backup and try out any of the A/B phh Treble GSI roms. there's even phh magisk. for now it looks like this is as good as we're gonna get.
so when i was trolling the pixel 5 xda forum i was looking for anything pixel 5a related and i came across grapheneos.
when i went to their actual website i noticed in supported devices they list the pixel 5a

has anyone tried this rom out for their pixel 5a?
i absolutely hate the stock rom on the 5a. coming from HTC U11 to this phone the stock rom is riddled with bugs and seems to get worse each update.

I have not but all graphenos roms do not support google play services or google play store. Aurora Store replaces google play store. Most google play store apps are supported but no paid apps are.
yeah. i found this out the hard way after installing the rom. more or less pointless rom if you cant find the apk on appmirror to side load , or you paid for an apk
I'm on protonAOSP, but its development stopped. I was wondering if other custom rom for pixel 5 have pixel exclusive feature like "Hold For Me" etc. In their description they say stuff like: "Pixel look and feel" but doesn't talk about specific feature and I would like to know before migrating.
Yes.
Thees all come stock with Pixel devices (newer Pixels get them first, then I believe they trickle down).]
But the ones NOT in Proton are due to proprietary reasons.
Hope this helps. :good:
Thank you!
