Battery Drain on 'CRD9 Oreo - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
Just had this wicked battery drain start in the last few days. Not sure what has triggered it - but it seems to be the "Android System" process doing it I believe.
My phone used to last easily two-three days on one charge, now it's lasting 1 day with minimal screen on time.
I've done all the usual fault finding stuff like turning off bluetooth, GPS, got rid of some possible suspect apps etc but no dice so far. Didn't find much via searching and googling - is very hit 'n miss.
Any advice? I'm currently backing up my phone getting ready to factory reset it. It hasn't been wiped/reset since I got it when we were still on 7.1.1.

Only advice, factory reset, a good price after a major software update !
And in my opinion it's pointless to start new threads about battery drain, there are already 2 million out there. Probably everything has been said there, you can't get any new advices.

Yea I had figured as much hence getting ready to do just that haha.
Fairly frustrating, it's been so well behaved until recently.

same happened to me, please do this before the factory reset.
1. Settings/apps/three upper right dots/clear preferences
2. reboot
after that all your apps will delete all permissions and you battery will back to normal, you wont lose any data.
One thing, my launcher was the main battery drain app, I used Evie Launcher, after deleted all back to normal. Hope it helps.

Q - Battery life afer rooting

I rooted my phone yesterday to try to get ubuntu on my webtop. Is there anyway that rooting has screwed up my battery at all? My phone is getting much hotter and the battery is draining much faster now.
Any help would be great.
I also had some battery issues after rooting. My phone got very hot and completely discharged the battery in three hours while sitting idle in my bag. I'm not sure what the culprit was, but a factory data reset seems to have fixed my issue.

I will try that and report back.
how much battery life do you get after rooting?
Interesting. I am rooted and have not seen any loss of battery life. Did you remove or freeze any apps?

Yes I did freeze apps. I factory reset last night and didn't freeze and the phone is doing better so far.
Same here, rooting seems to be affecting battery. All I did was uninstall the bloatware. Gonna see today how it goes. It was fine for a couple days and then just bombed.
Have you guys tried deleting the battery statistics??
I could be that there's something off with the way the usage is occuring through operation that way.
It might help.

I can't find the link right now, but the myth that deleting the battery statistics file improves battery life has been thoroughly debunked.

Send me the link, would love to see it.
The battery statistics, it worked on my RAZR by deleting them, so I would love to see where they 'de-bunked' it as personal experience for me says otherwise.
Got about a half hour more when I did this.

I'll have to reply to that, as the battery stats do not reset upon full charge, but only upon reset of the phone.
I actually don't turn my phone off very often, and have seen stats compile for days on end.
Or at least that was what was happening to my RAZR....
Interesting, though.

Battery problem

Hi Folks, I hve had my note for 1 year now and haven't had any battery problems until 2 days ago when I flashed a jb rom. All was fine for about 10 hours when I started to recharge the battery again that went fine, charged to 100% and unplugged, the phone said it was at 100%. After another few hours the phone cut out, no warning just cut out. I could get the phone back on but only when plugged into the charger. So, heres my problem, phone says battery is fully charged but when I unplug the charger it cuts out now. if I boot in to recovery with out the charger it stays on for hours. if I try to start the phone up normally with out charger it doesn't work. I have tried another battery again it started fine for almost a day then the same problems again. I have tried several kernels and roms in case it was one of those that was causing the problem but its the same every time. Im not a newb when it comes to flashing roms some im 100% sure its all ok in that department. any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Graham
My note is also about 10 months old. I want to know if my battery stats. I feel like my phone is giving me short time.

What really matters here is your screen on time (I can get around 4h30 with heavy use). I also see you have a few notifications so there might be some draining apps running in the background (like that *** Facebook app which is constantly running in the background even with notifications off). In any case BBS should help you identify the "rogue" app (if any). Also I don't use Google Now as it's kind of a battery killer.
this problem is same with me...after 1 year use gnote
and this is battery problem..i dont know whats is causing it...
i try to enter recovery mode and ..battery is good..almost 4 hours screen on recovery mode
but if I try to start the phone up normally phone is reboot after 1minute in homescreen android
trying with different rom jb ..same problem ..
after replace my battery ..problem is gone..
@strachg If the phone used to work well before you flashed JB I'd recommend going back to ICS to see if the problem persists. If it disappears the reason is JB which would not supprise me since all JB roms for the Note are not really bug free. If the phone continues to behave like you described and changing the battery does not help either I'd say it's a hardware failure.

Hi, Yeah I already tried going back to ics and it was just the same, it just seems like a bit of coincidence and really annoying lol. The only thing I can think off that is causing it is as you say that its a hardware fault and it must be overcharging the battery and breaking it. If it was JB that was causing it im sure I wouldn't have been the only one by now.
thanks
Graham
how did you install jb? Was it clean on safe kernel? You havent eliminated the possibility of software issues.
Qazibazit, it looks ok.
Guideline 3,5-4,5 hours on screen time is normal (if you play games can be less, thus is from full to 1%). Total standby time, usually more then 24 hours is normal.
If you have a lot less, go read ahalfords sticky on wakelocks. All you need to know to optimize battery.

Hi baz 77 yeah using safe kernel, tried a few actually. And using utackas. Version of paranoid android now again tried a few Roms. Everything was wiped and redone the process about 20 times. I looked through all the roms. And kernel threads and no one has had this problem. New battery coming so will see how it goes now.
Cheers

yep thats pretty definitive, at least if all those roms are not having same base and thus posibly same issues.
Your new battery will improve your experience quite a bit if its a good one!

RAZR i: Screen killing battery (JB?)

My screen is using all the battery and I'm not totally sure if this is JB but I do think I got more juice on ICS. Whatever the case, my settings are:
1. Simple wallpaper, mostly black
2. Brightness at 50%, auto-dim on
3. Smartaction: using music turns brightness down to absolute minimum
Result? Phone lasts about one day, but it last longer on ICS. The battery says about 75-85% of the juice has been used by the screen alone. How can this be? Time on is about 2-2.5 hours per day.
Anyone else? Any tips, ideas?

Can anyone else confirm if there is a battery life issue on JB? I have downloaded the udpate but not installed yet. The feedback I have been reading is very mixed from significantly shorter battery life to actual improvements after the update.

So far I've noticed great battery stats on ICS but many people complaining after JB. Hopefully there's some tweaks we can do to resolve it.

Well I'm on JB and have awesome battery life.
About 2 days and a half with 6 hours screen on and 1 or 2 hours GPS.
I froze a lot of apps, including google search (google now) wich for some people seems to be a battery drain app.
You're lucky ^^ I will steal your phone and leave mine :good:
OK I chatted with Moto, they said the first thing to do is reset the phone. I doubt if that will do much, but I've done it anyway, I'm charging so will report on this probably tomorrow.
Another tip I've read is to reset cache in the recovery menu, I haven't been able to access it in JB for some reason.
OK I can say that after resetting the phone to factory settings after the Jelly Bean update has helped a lot. Now I'm very happy.

Can you tell me which ROM you are using? I'm on the EU and experienced bad battery life after the JB update, I'm trying a factory reset now.

My phone was bought in Germany and exported from there. So, EU ROM? The factory reset helped me a lot.
P.s. I notice that the testers at GSM arena achieve 7 hours internet use or 8 hours video use at 50% brightness. I want to achieve this! The best I've got is about 5 hours mixed screen use.

I did that too but after a few weeks it went back its old ways
I updated to JB eventually, reset the phone from scratch and can't notice any difference in battery life.

That is a very common issue with Kitkat on the ATT Note 3. Custom roms have helped it, but not much. I use to get about 2 days out of my phone. I switch batteries everyday now. I have the spare battery charging system.
So we can only wait for ether the bootloader to be unlocked or for ATT to fix it.
Unrooted and can only get 18-23 hours of charge after the Kit Kat update. Before I could do 2-3 days, easily!

A word to the wise, I wouldn't be mentioning KR around here. It is considered a taboo subject after what the creator did.
android core apps always used to show as the top battery culprit for me under 4.4.2 - the google search app with the cards ended up being the app i isolated for my issue and disabling it fixed my battery drain issue.
I have also read about a bug with the camera app - but I haven't consistently had that issue so I stopped restarting my phone after using the camera.
My battery life has also went down since the kitkat update. I am at 36% at 11hrs 39min and 3.5 hrs of screen time. That's not bad, but previously I would be around 50% around this time...

Whenever you charge your phone to 100% (after it got to at least 15%) unplug it and reboot right a way. That fixed the problem for me.
from the tip of my fangers...!
This helped with my note, and managing "power hungry" apps also made a big impact.

Per the website 62.78 MB
Right, it is a very small update. I am installing right now. I am not rooted or anything. So i will try and give some feedback when i finish installing. But i am sure that it is going to take a few days to notice any actual changes.
There's already another thread that was created yesterday about this update. Maybe we should all stick to that one so we have a unified place for information gathering. Allegedly this update was to activate Samsung Pay, but mine still did not work. I am completely stock and unrooted. I don't care, I just want better battery (too early to tell).
A 62mb update to enable Samsung pay? Yeah that doesn't make much sense at all.

The update made the RAM usage little smaller, better battery and overall experience.
The only issue found when using data, sometimes it automatically turns off. I have to go to data and turn it back again... weird
With this new update this speech to text keeps freezing up.

I have Data off, International Data On, Wi-Fi calling off, VoLTE off.
When the phone goes to sleep and the Wi-FI is disconnected (I have "Keep Wi-Fi during sleep off), when it goes off it automatically turns on the Data....
If I have the data on, it goes off automatically. I have to run it on again to use it....
I haven't found the issue what is causing this. Phone not rooted

No issues here...everything works fine.
around day 2 after the latest update i noticed my battery life seemed to be lasting longer. I noticed my "time left" quote was exceptionally high, normally quoting 25ish hours max on a full charge, this time quoting 38.
last friday was the first day of any major usage. used it more than i typically do even on fridays (sat and watched youtube videos quite a lot), with 2 20 minute charges or so, from 8:00am to 6pm it was getting heavy usage, with about 3 hours of youtube going, and at the end of hte day i was above 60%.
That had me floored as normally after a normal friday, I'd be pushing my luck for 40% even with using my portable charger, and thats without youtube.
tomorrow I'll get to give it another hard test and see if it holds up again. if it does i think i will suddenly love my phone now
