I am noticing on T-Mobile that my cell signal is constantly jumping between 3G, H, H+, and 4G, which causes a bit of battery drain. "Cell Standby" is the second highest process listed in battery stats.
I have my APN set to fast.t-mobile.com, and my network mode set to 4G (preferred)/WCDMA/GSM
Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Did you manually set the APN? Or is that an automated address?
I don't think having a high "Cell Standby" is a bad thing, unless it's listed under wakelocks, but that seems to be like impossible.
"Cell Standby" is like the highest process for me and I don't have any problems in terms of drains. I'd suggest try looking for another APN in the list.
Just remove the one you're in now and try rejoining it, or another one.

Yes I know, but did you enter the APN settings manually, or did you just choose from a list?
Either way: Choose to forget the current APn and try reconnecting to one.

Have them push an update to you for the cell towers. On Sprint, it was called a PRL Update, not sure what it is called on T-Mobile(I recently switched, and am using them now). Mine jumped around like your's, but they pushed the update, and after a few days, I get more bars, and a pretty solid data type connection.
I don't believe GSM uses PRLs.

I am not sure either, however, over the phone with T-Mobile tech support, they pushed out an "Update" of some kind, and I saw a difference.
My phone is sitting next to me at work. Barely using it, but it's just draining, at an alarmingly quick pace.
I have bad reception at my desk at work in LTE. As you can see from the pic, it's constantly looking for signal. Is it normal to create such a battery drain in that scenario?
I used to force my older android device to use 3G. Any way to do that? I don't see that option under mobile networks as I had in my older phone.
Go into your settings app, then into more, then into mobile networks, then change preferred network type from LTE to 3G.
I don't have that option, unfortunately. I had it on my old phone which was running a custom rom, but not on the at&t moto X.

Try going into the dialer, hit *#*#4636#*#*
To menu, phone info, scroll down to LTE/GSM Auto and choose wcdma preferred.
I have the normal menu on the XT1092, so I can't say for sure it'll work for you.

Thank you. I also grabbed an app called "4G Switcher" which does basically the same thing (allows you into that menu without using the dialer). I currently have it set to "GSM Auto" - does that accomplish the same thing? It's definitely not on LTE, as Speedtest indicates ~5 MBps download speeds, and the icon says "4G" instead of "4G LTE." How is WCDMA different from the GSM setting?

WCDMA is the European standard for 3G, speeds up to 30Mbps.
When saying GSM you generally mean 2G/EDGE. 0.12 Mbps(?)
But I don't know all of the settings in that menu, there are many that will probably lock you out of some bands you might want.
You should experiment and see what you get.
WCDMA preferred is what I've used for the past several years on android phones, this Moto X is the first where LTE is actually useful. =)
The "low" bandwidth LTE (800/900mhz) uses less power than 3G mode here.

Got it, thanks. WCDMA mode seems to give me better signal, so we will test with that one. Will report back with how this performs at work, hopefully helps the battery life.
I have much better signal at work with wcdma compared to LTE. But battery still seems to drain quick. I'm at 6 hrs off battery with just under 1 hr SOT, and at 60% already.
Screenshot. Android OS and System seem go be taking a lot too.

Your problem is not bad signal but an app which keeps your phone awake, unfortunately it's rather difficult to hunt down on kitkat and above without root, the only way is to start uninstalling apps until the problem disappears.
Hmm, I have very few apps installed actually, and just Facebook and Gmail syncing. Are there any apps that can help identify the drain (GSam?)?
Don't look further, Facebook is known to be one of the worst android app for android

Hmmm interesting. I'll try uninstalling Facebook and repeating the experiment tomorrow at work, just to see if it drains slower. I wonder if auto-sync can accomplish the same thing instead of removing it entirely, but will try this way first. Going to take off a few other unnecessary apps as well, and will install GSam to see if it helps identify anything.

I had that before, it was the Moto app for me.
Go to google play, search for the term "motorola" straight up, and click your way through the updates that are available.
If you have never done this, there's a sensor firmware update and some other goodies.
After updating everything, go into the app "Moto" and clear cache and data, now re-run this and set up your stuff.
After this android os and system is always lower than cell standby.
And there's the usual GPS setting, go into GPS, and disable it fully.
Don't allow google to use passive mode, set it to "Device only"
ed, I have facebook installed but every single notification disabled.
It still runs a bit in the background, but not nearly as much. Not enough for me to notice a battery drain at least.

Shadow, that's very helpful - thank you. I had a lot of updates to do, and as you said a sensor firmware update. I disabled a couple Motorola things like Connect, Help, and Spotlight Player - but I do use Actions, Voice, etc. Updated everything, cleared data and cache, will see today how the battery performs.
Yep my GPS is set to device only, and interesting feedback on Facebook. I will keep it off the device today for testing but do want to put it back on as I use it on a regular basis.
Thanks again, will report back with my findings.

Actually, I wanted to kill the always on voice activation, it bugged out and wouldn't let me disable it after I switched back to Swedish system language, I was testing the voice recognition in english a few days.
So I wiped it, and suddenly my system and os battery drain dropped like a rock. =)
I have even enabled car detection and all the sensor stuff in the Moto app, except voice obviously, and it doesn't affect the battery any more.

Ah gotcha. I thought all that voice stuff was supposed to have a side processor that drained no battery! How did you turn all that stuff - disable in settings or disable app entirely? I don't need any of it either, just want to make sure the Moto Display and hand gestures still work.
Can anyone provide me with some tweaks so I can improve my battery life. I'm on stock 4.0.2 with elemental x kernel, rooted, bootloader unlocked. I'm not a gamer so I just need that my battery draining should stop. Provide some viable options. TIA
Greenify everything! My idle drain went from 10% per hour to 1% every 6 hours... Turn off wifi in deep sleep, turn on battery saver & limit the frequency in the kernel app. I easily get 7 hours of on screen time.
You dont need that app as you have VoLTE support. Calls from dialer will be free, even without that app.
As said before by others, use Greenify(works better with root), except messaging apps Greenify the apps which you dont use every hour like Maps, Games, etc.

Thanx battery drain has reduced with the help of greenify. But I'm unable to call with the dialer as I'm having the North American model. I don't think it supports Jio band.
Just check what bands your device supports. There are a lot of apps available in Playstore for that.

I doubt that it will show Volte signal as it is not in the Volte band. I also have Jio Sim but use it only for net . calling is pathetic. you need to have full signals to make a call even though I have OP3T indian model.
Is greenify needed with doze in nougat? I use the force doze app which forces the phone into doze mode as soon as the display turns off and also disables body sensors although im pretty sure nougat does all this stuff on its own now?

For Jio Sim on Oneplus One (OPO) using Jio4Gvoice version 5.1.1. I did the following: made a call to *#*#4636#*#* -->Phone Information --> changed the mode from GSM/LTE to LTE only. Battery consumption went down. Possible reason is that the phone supports 4g LTE but if the GSM radio is on then both GSM (2G/3G/4G) and LTE are working so battery drains. Since Jio is LTE, that is sufficient.
So sorry if this was common knowledge but I haven't seen anything on this yet so I thought I'd share. I decided to try setting up AT&T's number sync between my new mate 10 pro and my LG Sport and it worked. What makes that amazing is this is the first non att branded phone I have ever been able to set up directly between the phone and a att smartwatch that didn't require me using a att branded smartphone in the middle. You can't find the ability to do it through the my att app or website but if you initiate through the watch, it will open the browser on your phone and then give you a number sync code, once you log in through the browser, you put in the code and then accept terms and it will successfully link. This phone also seems to work well with the LG Sport. Battery life is waaay better then when it's paired to my Att Note 8.
FYI, Att number sync allows multiple devices to receive a phone call or text message from the main line they are tied to. That way every thing is seen from one number. One of the requirements is that the phone must be Att branded.
So that tells me between this and VoLTE working on att with this phone, this phone was all but ready for att network and only thing missing was the att branding on the phone before att backed out.
Sorry if long l, just wanted to share to maybe help other att users.
Have you been able to get/verify that VoLTE is working on your mate 10 Pro? If yes, how did you verify it works? I have a Dual Sim 10 Pro rebranded to the US 10 Pro (did at Best Buy) with the Enhanced Voice and VoLTE options enabled. Thanks.

I didn't use the default apn that sets up when I had my att sim inserted. I used the settings from att's support page: https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1218306
If I remember, there were a few subtle differences. Honestly, I didn't notice if VoLTE was working before the new apn settings but I see that it works for sure with the new apn settings. My status doesn't change from LTE whether on call and/or browsing.

Cellular bands are the same as US version; when not in a call I connect to LTE+. I can achieve cellular download speeds of 98 Mbps. Main difference between US version and mine is my phone is dual SIM Mate 10 Pro. The second SIM connects to 4G when I make a call. If I use only 1 SIM, connection drops to HSPA+. I see an option to enable VoLTE on the second SIM, but it's disabled. Have you to find a way to enable it. I appreciate your feedback, thanks again.

i have the same setting/option and it's also enabled; see below. will contact at&t again tomorrow.
I'm missing the option to set my device to 4G only. Under "Settings" -> "Network & internet" -> "Mobile network" -> "Preferred network type" I can switch only between "2G/3G/4G" and "2G/3G". I miss further options and especially to set it on "4G" or LTE only. Because my network provider is pretty bad at 3G but quite good at 4G, even when 3G signal is much stronger and 4G signal is weak.
I don't care if I can't take voice calls in this mode.
Edit: I see there are apps on the store to do this. Though would be great to do it within the ROM.

My old phone did, when LTE signal was weak (but still available), and I assume, any other phone will do so as well. But data was much more reliable within 4G than 3G, even when signal was weak.
I play a gps-based online multiplayer game and whenever someone complained about bad data, I hinted to set their phone to LTE only.

4G+ Means LTE-Advanced aka True 4G, and it is faster than 4G. The only difference is the maximium theoretical speed, bandwidth and minimium latency you can get. 4G can reach speeds up to 100Mbit/s, while the 4G+ (LTE-A) can reach up to or over 1GBit/s, with less than a few milliseconds of latency.
