Bootloader and official Updates - no clear answer - Huawei P9 Questions & Answers

Hello, Community!
I have a question. If I obtain a bootloader unlock code from huawei when exactly will I be unable to get official updates? At the point huawei gives it to me or when I really unlock the bootloader?
Thanks, Jan

It has been answered elswhere, unlocked Bootloader (if you don't root, insrall custom ROM or Recovery) does not prevent OTA updates.
However, sone OTA updates may lock your Bootloader back.
Just asking for / getting Bootloader code has nothing with OTA updates or guarantee

Just make sure you save (to the paper) your Bootloader code, it's one and the same for future for your particular device - and Huawei will soon close Bootloader unlocking portal (but you will still be able to use your obtained code)

New Moto X owner, have some starter questions.

Hello everybody, I just got my Moto X and I have to say it is a lovely device better than I expected in terms of how it feels in the hand. Really compact device.
I have some questions:
1. My phone has 4.4.2 but OTA fails to update it to 4.4.3. Is there any software that I can use to update the phone?
2. Is there a flashtool software where I can flash different .ftf fies?
3. Root option for 4.4.3 available?
1. There are a few threads discussing the 4.4.3 OTA, and what condition your phone must be in to receive/install the OTA. For example -> [XT1053] 4.4.3 OTA Update Zip and Android™ 4.4.3, KitKat® Rolls Out to Moto Devices I'm sure if you READ it, you'll find information that will solve your issue. Or if you post details of your phone, carrier, any tweaks you've made to it, etc...
2. I do not believe so.
3. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you *can* Root 4.4.3. If you have a LOCKED bootloader, you *can not* root 4.4.3.

Locked or unlocked bootloader? What carrier?
I have an unlocked Dev Ed Moto X running TMobile, and it accepted the 4.4.3 OTA update. I first had to revert entirely to stock 4.4.2, though.

My phone is branded with an AT&T logo on the back. Model number is xt1058 and I'm running stock 4.4.2
I don't know about the bootloader though, how can I verify that?
I would really like to update this to 4.4.3 and root it, although it's not that easy I see.
Any help would be highly appreciated. I'm even considering throwing in a bounty

Ok... here we go...
4.4.3 is not out for the ATT XT1058 yet, so you can't update to it. You need to wait for ATT to start making it available.
ATT XT1058 has a locked bootloader, and Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes. Your only option to unlock the bootloader is *IF* (or maybe when) the Chinese WebSite/MiddelMan comes back to selling bootloader unlock codes. See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
There is no option to root 4.4.3 when you have a locked bootloader.
If you want usable root on the X you need two parts 1. Root Exploit, and 2. An Exploit that allows for disabling Write Protection. There is now a Root Exploit for 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader, but there is not an exploit to disable write protection. This means if you'd root, then anytime you power your phone off/on, the changes, root, etc is lost. And Root style apps that need to write to /system and the like, CANT.
there is no root option for 4.4.3 with a locked bootloader

Thanks for the info fist of all. Not very good news but it is what it is.
I took a look at that link and apparently the newer models of Moto X are most likely to get an unlock code. My phone is from 2013 most probably but I don't know how to find out exactly. Can you advise on this matter as getting a code from that asian dude seems the next step for me.

There are several ways to find out your date code.. The easiest is to boot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode, and select the option for Bar Codes. The date displayed there is the build date.

Thanks, it appears that my phone is from August 2013. I will try to get a code. Before I do that just want to double check it with you.
Once I get the unlock code, I can root 4.4.2 that I'm currently running and also future updates released by AT&T/Motorola in the near future including the 4.4.3?

Correct. Once you unlock your bootloader (which is DESTRUCTIVE, so BACKUP EVERYTHING To Your PC, or Cloud, before you do the process), you will be able to root any android version by flashing a 3rd party recovery (like TWRP), booting to the 3rd party recovery and installing SuperSU.

Unfortunately the Chinese middle man couldn't help me with the unlock code. What about contacting AT&T regarding the unlock code? Do you think it's possible asking them politely?

Zero chance. Sorry.
I mean...it's certainly possible to ask them politely, but they still won't give it to you....guaranteed.
I'm guessing you have a 2013 variant since the middleman couldn't help you?

Yes, a late 2013 model. He said that the database could become available again in the future...
If I want to contact AT&T, what would be the best way? Phone/email? I'm not an US citizen nor living in US.

I'm not an AT&T customer, so I can't advise on contact info, but I can tell you that you will be wasting your time if you even try. The chance that they will give you the code is exactly 0% no matter how nicely you ask them.
You might consider selling your AT&T XT1058 and buying one that can be unlocked, such as the XT1053, or the XT1058 Roger's variant if unlocking the BL is that important to you.
Good Luck

You have zero chance getting a boot loader unlock code from Att or Moto.
And If you are not living in the USA, then you are likely not an ATT customer, so they won't even talk to you.

(Q) Query about bootloader and re-packaging an OTA

hi all,
Just having a thought (might not work but thought i'd ask)
Some OTA's / Firmwares which you can install from the bootloader have the ability to re-lock the device, would the same be possible for the other way around?
I mean i'm on a locked bootloader now cos of the crap i installed which updated me to 9.1, it relocked the bootloader, I can turn on OEM unlocking (FRP) but obviously it remains unlocked.
Would there be a way to repackage a firmware package so that it does the opposite to re-locking?
I think everyone has pretty much given up on Huawei devices, I was just trying to disable zRAM and i can't.
Any thoughts ? Is this a possible avenue? or is this simply not going to work?
I'd guess the latter but thought i'd ask.
Which firmware version relocked your bootloader? I can perhaps take a look at it in my free time.

Nope! DLOAD re-lock bootloader to factory condition, but there's no way to unlock the bootloader with it.
I don't think Huawei will give you the unlock code a second time, but maybe you will be lucky, who knows.
Maybe you can retrieve it from an email from them!?
Edit: You can download your HuaweiID data from Settings - > HuaweiID - > Privacy Center but i doubt you will get the bootloader code from there

I've spoke with them, they said they've not heard of a situation like this.
Bare in mind that this is information that has been passed to me before. Which is a correspondence, they are obligated to provide it regardless.
I don't believe it was in an email and I've checked all accounts

once you unlock and relock, you can't received OTA anymore. same like mine. need to try unlock and relock EDL method but I'm so lazy to try
Can't you just flash the full OTA in fastboot? I know you can flash the zip files off ASUS' site through TWRP.
Once you unlocked your bootloader then your IMEI number becomes blacklisted by Asus OTA server. Which means relocking bootloader will not bring OTA back. You are stuck with manual flashing every update with zip or fastboot.
It even stated clearly in the description on Asus website where you download the tool that OTA will no longer work once you unlock your bootloader. Also warranty will be voided once you do it aswell.

I want to go back to stock CN to be able to get OTA's (TENCENT)

HI.
I am currently using the Tencent verions 8/128gb rog phone 2.
My bootloader is unlocked and i am running the latest WW rom with WW fingerprint.
I want to go back to the original factory state so that i may be able to get the Updates via OTA.
I want to go back to the original CN version and be able to get the OTAs
I read in some posts that Once bootloader has been unlocked. There is no way to get ota anymore. Whether it be cn or ww.. even if you lock the bootloader again??? is that true?
Can someone answer/help me get back to the stock/original factory rom.
i have attached the detailed snapshots showing my current version
First you will never get any OTA updates because you unlocked the bootloader.
Second stay on WW better for you no need to get back to CN there is no updates about 2 month ago.

Does not work like that. It states clearly on Asus bootloader unlock tool, doing bootloader unlock will permanently disable OTA updates. Since your IEMI number will be automatically black listed from their OTA server. So even if you re-lock your bootloader you still won't receive any OTA updates.

Don't ask me ask asus. Since they are stating this clearly on their information about their tool.
Also unlocking bootloader does not change IMEI number. That's why doing OTA with re-locked or unlocked bootloader won't give you anymore OTA.
And yes I have seen people saying updates through OTA no longer works once bootloader is unlocked.

need help to relock bootloader.

hi guys, I made a stupid thing earlier, I went using the bootloader unlock for Asus rog tencent which can be found on the guide how to convert CN to WW, now I always get message when I turn on the phone that the bootloader is unlock and it makes.me sick, what I done is I unlock the bootloader then I'm wondering why I can't flash any firmware on my phone, do you have any idea or tips how can I relock my bootloader again? I don't want this message popping up each time I turn on my device. Help please. My software information is WW_16.0622.1906.19_0

Keep in mind relocking your bootloader won't get you any OTA updates anymore. You will have to manually flash your device from now on, since your IMEI is blacklisted by Asus OTA server.
