No bootloader unlock yet?

besides the chinese connection which may or may not be working , I dont need the spam nor do I need links having access to PP accounts . I guess my Moto X will continue to be a paperweight , My Note OG will continue to be my DD , since it has never failed me . Too bad Android is going the way of the proprietory scams (apple,windows ) and I dont blame the Devs like some people in here , , ya gotta figure if Microsoft, Google, Apple or HP ,Oracle see's what these guys are doing and says "I want that kid " , "yore hred kid , but you cant release anymore code to the public, trust me you'll be compensated well" , why wouldnt they take that offer ?
Just wish there was something else we could do ?

It's AT&T that refuses to allow Motorola to unlock their model ...

I've seen nothing but happy customers from the Chinese code seller...the phones he could unlock anyway.
So a bit of spam, or an unlocked bootloader..... Seems most go for the unlock.
As said, dev edition is your only other choice. Sell the one you have and you'll be most of the way to the DE cost.

I don't know of anyone on here who has gotten any spam using the PayPal method with the Chinese guy. If you don't have an unlockable version or a dev version, it will likely be the only possibility ever. Motorola have locked these things down tight.

Well, you could start by buying phones that actually suit your needs. Some versions of the X were bootloader-locked. This was known from the outset. So whose fault is it that you own a "paperweight"? It's not the developers, or Google, or Microsoft, or anyone else.
You could have bought a dev edition. You could have bought from a carrier who allowed unlocking. You could have skipped the X altogether... so, why?
I'd like it if Big Red offered more unlockable phones, but I go into any phone purchase with eyes wide open. I decided the Moto X suited my needs even bootloader-locked. So you won't hear any complaints from me: it's my own fault if I don't like it. I don't hear a lot of Ford F350 owners complaining about their gas mileage, and there aren't a lot of Prius drivers that think their car is a paperweight because it can't haul a boat.

I used the Chinese PayPal method and haven't received any spam what so ever, only a single email with my code. Would highly recommend that option to anyone.

wasnt referring to spam from the chinese guy and that would be the option Id take , as for the paperweight , should have stayed with stuff I know like Samsung and HTC anyway , theyve never let me down , there isnt some are some arent!

I used the chinese MM method. Sent the payment via paypal as instructed and received the code less than 24 hrs later.
Unlocked BL, rooted phone, and installed GravityBox today. Noticed literally no extra lag so far and the increase in functionality, customization, and my satisfaction of the phone has increased exponentially.
If you're worried about spam, can't you just make a temporary email account?

Semi off topic:
If I rooted my phone to 4.4.2. and I have a bootloader locked, doing a factory reset will entitle me to keep my root? Or will I lose it?
And what if I do a factory reset on my rooted moto x on 4.4.2 when my bootloader is unlocked. Will I be able to keep my root when doing factory reset? I am trying to get rid of this "com.motorola.process.system" because I've tried wiping cache and dalvik and safemode and date and time method doesn't work.

Please follow my instructions in the other thread. You'll have to re-flash the stock 4.4.2 rom, and you will NOT be getting root back without BL unlock.
Sorry...its posted all over this forum that you cannot take the 4.4.2 OTA - it patches the BL exploits we used.

Alright. Just bought the unlock bootloader service.

If you want a bootloader unlock for AT&T Moto X, you could just get the Rogers Moto X.
They are both XT1058 and the Rogers one is bootloader unlockable on the Motorola website. I unlocked 3 there myself.

[Q] AT&T XT1058 can i flash it to a generic rom?

Hi, I got an AT&T XT1058 from ebay. I'm in teh UK so I'd really like to flash it with a stock UK ROM. I've had a look on here and with the huge amount of info I can't figure out if this is possible and which rom to use. it's 4.4.2 that's on the phone at teh moment which i believe can't be downgraded or unlocked easily, is that right?
any help would be greatly appreciated

To flash any Rom besides the Stock, Signed Moto ROM for your carrier and model X, you need to unlock the bootloader.
While Moto doesn't give out the Bootloader Unlock Code for the ATT USA XT1058, since you have 4.4.2 on it still, you should be able to use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader. (NOTE: please boot into fastboot/bootloader on the phone, and verify the version on the 2nd line is 30.B4 which is correct for 4.4.2).
Once you use sunshine, you can flash 3rd party recoveries, roms, etc.
While I have NOT done it, I've seen posts of ATT US Xt1058 owners flashing with Parts of the XT1053 rom to remove bloat, etc. (flashing the modems will likely change which wireless bands the phone can connect to). I do not advise flashing another carrier's rom. It could get messy, especially around UPDATE time. And I've seen some lose Cellular and WIFI flashing the wrong modem files.
One final thing. The ATT US XT1058 is SIM/Carrier locked too. So in order to use a non-ATT SIM in it you'll need to obtain a SIM unlock code. You should be able to get this from any web site selling unlock codes on the internet.

hey, thanks for the very helpful response unfortunately i seem to have suffered from a bout of stupidity writing that and it's 4.4.4 that i've got on the phone! how does that affect things? also as an aside the sim is unlocked so i can use any sim so at least that's something...

To unlock the bootloader on the ATT XT1058 Moto X, there are only two possible ways..
The China Middleman thread (in the general section), although he only has codes for certain date range of phones (depends on the Assembly Date of your phone), BUT he has recently stopped responding again. There is no telling if/when it will start up again
Sunshine, which doesn't work with 4.4.4. However you can always try it since it wont charge you if it doesn't work. (i.e. it checks your phone, if it will work, if wont, it tells you and exits without charging you).
4.4.4 can't be temp rooted either.
So you are pretty much stuck stock ATT, and then just get it sim unlocked to use it with your carrier.

thanks for the reply. I guess i'll give the china middleman a try. I'd really like to get rid of the ATT address book, the fact that it perpetually shows as 4g connection and have the phone speak to me in a not american accent!

For the Rogers XT1058, Moto does offer the Bootloader Unlock code for free from their web site -> https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth it will void your warranty
The GSM Dev Edtion is the XT1053. It has different radio/modem files, its hardware supports different bands (less LTE bands). I never recommend flashing another model's ROM as we have seen loss of cellular in some cases, where even flashing the original firmware back didn't fix.
Once you unlock your bootloader and root, you can remove and freeze any bloat on the phone (freezing is preferred because the next OTA might require it to be there).

Only if you can't unlock your boot loader. But as I said, moto does give out the unlock codes on their web site for the Rogers xt1058
Also, without unlocking the boot loader, you can only flash the rom for your phone model and its carrier branding.

There is no way now.

Google says no, as does many posts in many threads on this forum.

sIm Lock, aka carrier lock, has nothing to do with bootloader unlock.
To bootloader unlock, you need the unique code for the phone. Likely due to carrier contracts, Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock code for ATT, Verizon, or Republic Wireless, but does for many/most other carriers. At one point there was a web site in China and a Middleman who access to Moto's list or database of codes which included even those Moto didn't publicly make available (I.e ATT, VZW, RW) but that dried up a while ago. JCase found a vulnerability in the bootloader on the 2013 X, and came out with/updated his Sunshine tool with a hack exploiting that vulnerability to unlock the bootloader (without having the unique code) on the 2013 X too, but it doesn't work once the X has been upgraded to 4.4.4. Sunshine DOES work on the 2013 X if it has never been upgraded past 4.4.3.

Thanks for letting me know. I got the phone in August and it was on 4.4.3, but then I accidentally installed 4.4.4. If only I had known that I wouldn't be able to root it after that.... It really sucks because I really want Viper4Android on my Moto X.

Jcase has been teasing us with word of the next sunshine version working for 4.4.4. It was projected to release early January but they must not be done putting all their awesome into that sauce. Be patient and I bet you'll have an unlocked bl soon enough.
In an abundance of caution, I would probably hold off taking the lollipop update coming soon in case it patches whatever vulnerability they are exploiting.

4.4.3 or 4.4.2? because I wasn't aware that there was a 4.4.3 for ATT.

I checked it as soon as I got it and it was 4.4.3. A few days after, a notification for 4.4.4 popped up and I accidentally hit install. I got the phone August 10th, 2014.

I wonder if Android 5 will have an exploit or something to unlock the boot loader.

India? What model X do you have, and from what carrier?
Often times the 2013 X in EMEA has been an XT1052.

Mine is Asian retail Indian model so how to find if unlocking is avbl?
If I proceed with (moto x US) and generate serial key of my phone using SDK tools and check for unlock bootloader in site, my phn won't get bricked or anything right? That's a doubt I have.

You should be able to use the same web site to get the bootloader unlock code, many others with the European and Asian XT1052 have been able to get their bootloader unlock code there.
If you get the code in an email, it will either work, or give you an error if its not the right code. It will not brick your phone.

All current root methods are there, based on device versions and state. ?

There is a untested way to unlock the bootloader but is very risky, you must open your device. Anyway if you are so brave to try this procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/droid-ultra-maxx-brick-recovery-t2830806 look at this guide at the second point, first you must drill the plate on the ram chip, you must short the right pin on your moto x to ground (i attach a photo,pointed by the orange arrow) then follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-resurrecting-bricked-moto-x-t2629057
THIS IS A VERY RISKY PROCEDURE: YOU CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!!

I have Moto X (2013), I want to know why my phone is still on 4.4.2 KitKat and not getting any newer updates? Others running 4.4.4 KitKat and about to get Android L, what's wrong with my phone? I have tried resetting my phone couple of times and tried Motorola Device Manager too but no luck. I don't know whether I have XT1049 or XT1058 because I got this phone from a friend, he just gave it away and I am not living in a country where I can get Motorola Support. I thought I had XT1049, I contacted Republic Wireless, they checked my IMEI number and told me that it's not their phone, I contacted Motorola's online support they told me by looking at the IMEI number it's XT1058 AT&T phone but when I connect my phone to my computer it says "XT1049 is connected to the computer" and in pictures "details" I can see that the picture is taken by XT1049, I am so confused. Kindly help, I want updates coming to my phone

Your device belongs with ACG Regional Carriers. It is currently at 4.4.2 only. You can see your model in the lower area of your back panel..

OTA updates are really up to your carrier and/or Motorola. You will seen no updates, until THEY make them available.
When the bootloader is locked, you can only flash official roms (or parts like recovery) for your model/carrier, which are digitally signed by Motorola. Attempts to flash anything else, will fail.

Why would you want to unlocked the bootload? So you could flash either a totally custom rom, or a rom meant for another carrier/model 2013 X which might be newer. (like some ATT XT1058 users like to flash Rogers XT1058 rom to get rid of the ATT bloat).
I really know nothing about the "ACG Regional Carriers" variant of the Moto X. I'm not sure if it might be the same hardware as another variant, only with a different ROM flashed on it. So I don't know if its safe to flash another carrier's ROM on it. But with an unlocked bootloader, you can try 3rd party roms like CM11 or CM12.

Unlock the BL and flash custom ROMs

You may want to edit your post and remove your imei number. It can be hijacked and leave you with a non functioning device. (no calls or texts or data anyway.)

Getting used VZW Moto-X - want root - What to look for?

Hi All,
I currently have an XT1053 on Lycamobile (T-Mobile MVNO). I rooted it when I got it, have a custom recovery, ROM, xposed framework, XPrivacy, titanium backup. It's been 1.5 years so I'm rusty on how I did it before.
I'd like to move to Verizon pre-paid so I'm looking to buy a used phone. I want to end up with the same capabilities - root, custom ROM, etc.
I'm thinking I should get a Dev edition Verizon Moto-X so that I can get the unlock code from Motorola. In order to reduce chances of issues/bricking, is there are particular version of Android the phone should already have? Anything else I should be looking for?

For the Dev Edition it doesn't matter what version you're on, you can root no matter what.

The only reason you would need 4.4.2 for easy unlocking is if you were on a non-developer edition phone and were using Sunshine. Dev editions can be unlocked, flashed, and rooted quite easily. Non-developer editions though, you want to be on an earlier release of Android, although there is a root method for 4.4.4 now, so you may still be able to unlock the bootloader.

Unlocking the bootloader is needed to run a custom rom, custom recovery, etc. and to ensure the ability to root no matter what ROM is on your phone.
Stick with a Developer Edition XT11060 for Verizon. You can get the bootloader unlock code directly from Motorola, for free.
If you get a RETAIL or Moto Maker variant, so long as the phone was never updated to 4.4.4 or higher, you can use Sunshine to unlock its bootloader. BUT Sunshine relies on exploiting a vulnerability to unlock the bootloader. There has been some question on if the vulnerability will be patched in Lollipop and could that pose any issues for those who used Sunshine to unlock. Will it re-lock them or will the unlocked status survive, etc? I have not seen a definitive answer.
While there is a ROOT method for a certain 4.4.4 build for non-Dev Verizon XT1060, that wont allow you to flash a custom rom or recovery, and it doesn't turn off write protection so there are some limits.

Thanks for bringing this up OP. I have a Verizon Note 4 and quite frankly I'm tired of the size and it's the longest I've been without root. Not to mention the lag with the TouchWiz lollipop build is driving me crazy. I now want a smaller (sorry Nexus 6) bootloader unlocked rootable android phone. After getting a pre-paid moto g to play around with I'm digging the smaller size and the resolution is more than acceptable. The Moto G should be even better.
I initially looked at the 2014 X but Verizon never released a developer model. My only hesitation to the 2013 is Android M. Is that coming to the 2013 X? And do people here have experience buying refurbished 2013 developer Xs from ebay. Pretty cheap around $110 to $150.

To clarify - if I get phone that's already unlocked because the previous owner got the code from Motorola, would I be able to contact Motorola in the future for the unlock code if I needed to re-unlock the phone or do they only give that out once?

OK, I was under the impression that they come bootloader locked so that I would need an unlock to achieve root. Am I mistaken?

People often get SIM unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) confused with bootloader unlocked when someone just says "unlocked"
The Verizon XT1060, Developer Edition or Retail/Moto Maker are SIM Unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) out of the box due to FCC 700 C-Block rules.
All 2013 X's ship as bootloader locked. The ATT XT1058, Republic Wireless XT1049 and Verizon Retail/Moto Maker XT1060 editions can not get the bootloader unlock code from Moto. The rest, including the Developer Edition XT1060 for Verizon, CAN.
Once bootloader unlocked using the code from Moto, the phone will stay that way unless you re-lock it. However, keep in mind there are 3 states of the 2013 X bootloader Locked Status 0 (as it ships from factory), Unlocked Status 3 (after you unlock via the code), and LOCKED Status 2 (aka relocked). We as users can not toggle it back to Status 0. Because we can't get back to Status 0, there is no real reason to try and relock. The "bootloader unlocked" warning message shows when status is NOT 0. *IF* you buy a used XT1060 Dev Edition where the previous owner as re-locked the bootloader, you will need the code to unlock it. The codes are unique to each phone.
I have no experience requesting the bootloader unlock code from moto for a USED phone, so I can't be of any help answering that question.

I purchased a used xt1060 dev that the previous owner had relocked the bootloader....not sure why. I was able to get a unlock code from Motorola no problem.
