It's AT&T that refuses to allow Motorola to unlock their model ...
I've seen nothing but happy customers from the Chinese code seller...the phones he could unlock anyway.
So a bit of spam, or an unlocked bootloader..... Seems most go for the unlock.
As said, dev edition is your only other choice. Sell the one you have and you'll be most of the way to the DE cost.
I don't know of anyone on here who has gotten any spam using the PayPal method with the Chinese guy. If you don't have an unlockable version or a dev version, it will likely be the only possibility ever. Motorola have locked these things down tight.

Well, you could start by buying phones that actually suit your needs. Some versions of the X were bootloader-locked. This was known from the outset. So whose fault is it that you own a "paperweight"? It's not the developers, or Google, or Microsoft, or anyone else.
You could have bought a dev edition. You could have bought from a carrier who allowed unlocking. You could have skipped the X altogether... so, why?
I'd like it if Big Red offered more unlockable phones, but I go into any phone purchase with eyes wide open. I decided the Moto X suited my needs even bootloader-locked. So you won't hear any complaints from me: it's my own fault if I don't like it. I don't hear a lot of Ford F350 owners complaining about their gas mileage, and there aren't a lot of Prius drivers that think their car is a paperweight because it can't haul a boat.

I used the Chinese PayPal method and haven't received any spam what so ever, only a single email with my code. Would highly recommend that option to anyone.

Unlocked BL, rooted phone, and installed GravityBox today. Noticed literally no extra lag so far and the increase in functionality, customization, and my satisfaction of the phone has increased exponentially.

Semi off topic:
If I rooted my phone to 4.4.2. and I have a bootloader locked, doing a factory reset will entitle me to keep my root? Or will I lose it?
And what if I do a factory reset on my rooted moto x on 4.4.2 when my bootloader is unlocked. Will I be able to keep my root when doing factory reset? I am trying to get rid of this "com.motorola.process.system" because I've tried wiping cache and dalvik and safemode and date and time method doesn't work.

Please follow my instructions in the other thread. You'll have to re-flash the stock 4.4.2 rom, and you will NOT be getting root back without BL unlock.
Sorry...its posted all over this forum that you cannot take the 4.4.2 OTA - it patches the BL exploits we used.

Alright. Just bought the unlock bootloader service.
If you want a bootloader unlock for AT&T Moto X, you could just get the Rogers Moto X.
They are both XT1058 and the Rogers one is bootloader unlockable on the Motorola website. I unlocked 3 there myself.

I decided to return my phone. However, I unlocked the bootloader and have since updated to 4.4.2. I am little hesitant flashing 4.4 back, and the new firmware is not available on their website yet.
Ideally, I want to return the phone to the state I received it in, locked bootloader, stock recovery, etc.
What are my options?

I would just do a device reset and send it back how it is. Wrong software, bricked, whatever.

*EDIT* I did some reading. eFuse sounds pretty crappy.
This isn't a nexus guys. We have limits. Going backwards on an x can lead to a brick.

The dev edition works no differently than any other x with an unlocked bootloader. They are exactly the same. The dev keeps the warranty, the only difference.

Is this on Verizon? If so, just send it back. They don't care. They send them back to Motorola to be refurbished. Don't even think twice about it.

Thread title says DE... DE's don't return to Carrier, they go directly to Moto, so being on Verizon wouldn't make difference.

Why are you returning? Is it because you've changed your mind and don't want the X? or are you trying to do a warranty exchange?
Check your bootloader version. If its not 30.B4, then you should be able to flash to the 4.4 DE rom on Moto's site. If you do have 30.B4, you are stuck. If you used a 4.4.2 OTA from T-Mobile, then I wouldn't worry about being on 4.4.2.
As far as relocking your boot loader, I don't think its needed. The warranty is not voided on DE phones. But more importantly, once you click ACCEPT and request the code, they have record you have the code, and assume you unlocked. (per the wording, if you accept and request the code, non-DE phones have immediately voided their warranty.)

Actually they can tell if you used the code or not, once you use the code on your phone then it trips the eFuse and burns it up, there is no way to repair it either, rather smart on Qualcomm/Motos part
Hello everybody, I just got my Moto X and I have to say it is a lovely device better than I expected in terms of how it feels in the hand. Really compact device.

1. My phone has 4.4.2 but OTA fails to update it to 4.4.3. Is there any software that I can use to update the phone?
2. Is there a flashtool software where I can flash different .ftf fies?
3. Root option for 4.4.3 available?
1. There are a few threads discussing the 4.4.3 OTA, and what condition your phone must be in to receive/install the OTA. For example -> [XT1053] 4.4.3 OTA Update Zip and Android™ 4.4.3, KitKat® Rolls Out to Moto Devices I'm sure if you READ it, you'll find information that will solve your issue. Or if you post details of your phone, carrier, any tweaks you've made to it, etc...
2. I do not believe so.
3. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you *can* Root 4.4.3. If you have a LOCKED bootloader, you *can not* root 4.4.3.

I have an unlocked Dev Ed Moto X running TMobile, and it accepted the 4.4.3 OTA update. I first had to revert entirely to stock 4.4.2, though.

My phone is branded with an AT&T logo on the back. Model number is xt1058 and I'm running stock 4.4.2
I don't know about the bootloader though, how can I verify that?
I would really like to update this to 4.4.3 and root it, although it's not that easy I see.
Any help would be highly appreciated. I'm even considering throwing in a bounty

Ok... here we go...
4.4.3 is not out for the ATT XT1058 yet, so you can't update to it. You need to wait for ATT to start making it available.
ATT XT1058 has a locked bootloader, and Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes. Your only option to unlock the bootloader is *IF* (or maybe when) the Chinese WebSite/MiddelMan comes back to selling bootloader unlock codes. Thanks for the info fist of all. Not very good news but it is what it is.
I took a look at that link and apparently the newer models of Moto X are most likely to get an unlock code. My phone is from 2013 most probably but I don't know how to find out exactly. Can you advise on this matter as getting a code from that asian dude seems the next step for me.

There are several ways to find out your date code.. The easiest is to boot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode, and select the option for Bar Codes. The date displayed there is the build date.

Once I get the unlock code, I can root 4.4.2 that I'm currently running and also future updates released by AT&T/Motorola in the near future including the 4.4.3?

Correct. Once you unlock your bootloader (which is DESTRUCTIVE, so BACKUP EVERYTHING To Your PC, or Cloud, before you do the process), you will be able to root any android version by flashing a 3rd party recovery (like TWRP), booting to the 3rd party recovery and installing SuperSU.

Unfortunately the Chinese middle man couldn't help me with the unlock code. What about contacting AT&T regarding the unlock code? Do you think it's possible asking them politely?

I'm not an AT&T customer, so I can't advise on contact info, but I can tell you that you will be wasting your time if you even try. The chance that they will give you the code is exactly 0% no matter how nicely you ask them.
You might consider selling your AT&T XT1058 and buying one that can be unlocked, such as the XT1053, or the XT1058 Roger's variant if unlocking the BL is that important to you.

You have zero chance getting a boot loader unlock code from Att or Moto.
And If you are not living in the USA, then you are likely not an ATT customer, so they won't even talk to you.
I have Moto X 2013 Verizon. Lasetest firmware 4.4.4. Can anyone help me unlock bootloader my phone? And after unlock bootloder can my phone recieve OTA update ?

Verizon (non-Dev Edition), ATT and Republic Wireless can not unlock their bootloader. It has been this way since the 2013 X went on sale.
Its likely due to contracts between Moto and those carriers.

I just did it earlier today, google "sunshine moto x" I had trouble initially but went on the site talked to the dec and he fixed the app for me, I am now unlocked deciding which 5.0 rom I want to go with. (sucks no moto apps until they relase the official )

I tried sunshine 3.0.3 on a VZW 4.4.4 non-dev phone and it couldn't achieve temp root. You are saying that it worked for you on a VZW locked non-dev 4.4.4 phone?

I think it depends on how you got to 4.4.4. If you took the official OTA, like I did, you're out of luck.

Sunshine relies on your phone being rooted, or the tool being able to obtain temp root.
4.4.4 on the 2013 Verizon Moto X, or most/all 2013 Moto X on locked bootloader, hasn't been rooted, and the tool can't temp root the phone.
So if you have 4.4.4 on the 2013 Moto X, do not expect Sunshine to work.
If you have never updated the 2013 Moto X to 4.4.4, then Sunshine will likely work just fine.

I took the soak test leak and pushed it to my phone and I can't unlock my boot loader either I don't think it has anything to do with that :/

Did you update everything or did you individually update components? I think it came down to whether or not people updated the bootloader when they updated to 4.4.4. There was a way to update without updating the bootloader and I think it's those phones that sunshine works for. I'm far from an expert though; I could definitely be wrong.

People were being "cute" and manual flashing SBF's but skipping GPT.BIN and Motoboot.img (two parts that can't be downgraded).
However, as I understand it, this doesn't change the fact that 4.4.4 can't be rooted or temp rooted by Sunshine, which prevents it from working. It does mean that if done this way, they could likely downgrade to their previous SBF which matches the GPT.Bin/Motoboot (probably 4.4.2), and still use sunshine.

People were being "cute" and manual flashing SBF's but skipping GPT.BIN and Motoboot.img (two parts that can't be downgraded).
However, as I understand it, this doesn't change the fact that 4.4.4 can't be rooted or temp rooted by Sunshine, which prevents it from working. It does mean that if done this way, they could likely downgrade to their previous SBF which matches the GPT.Bin/Motoboot (probably 4.4.2), and still use sunshine.

Dude, did you read what I quoted? He said sunshine unlocked his moto x. The OP specifies 4.4.4 and he said "I just did it", implying he was on 444.
I think you are skipping over a bit and replying only to parts of what I asked. I am well aware that sunshine won't work on 444. He stated he unlocked his with sunshine... Using only the words " I did it". I asked if he was on 444.

Its implied, but I've been on these boards enough to question when its not explicitly stated.
I was hoping he'd come back and provide confirmation that he was on 4.4.4, and what bootloader was on his phone

Oh wow. Yeah, something is a bit off there.
JCase said something a while ago about a bunch of exploits he would be releasing. I was/am really hoping there would be something that we could use to gain root on the 2013 Moto X, but with his last comment on twitter, I'm not so sure that is going to happen.
If I were in any other situation, I would be looking for a new phone, but two things are preventing it. First, I love the Moto X and haven't found another phone I like better. Second, MY moto x is already unlocked (I held on to 4.4 until Sunshine came out). Its my wifes and my fathers that are not. Somehow they ended up on 4.4.4 without knowing it. They claim it just happened while they were sleeping. I more quickly suspect they tapped on it thinking it was an app update from the app store. But in any event, their phones are still locked.

I currently have an XT1053 on Lycamobile (T-Mobile MVNO). I rooted it when I got it, have a custom recovery, ROM, xposed framework, XPrivacy, titanium backup. It's been 1.5 years so I'm rusty on how I did it before.
I'd like to move to Verizon pre-paid so I'm looking to buy a used phone. I want to end up with the same capabilities - root, custom ROM, etc.
I'm thinking I should get a Dev edition Verizon Moto-X so that I can get the unlock code from Motorola. In order to reduce chances of issues/bricking, is there are particular version of Android the phone should already have? Anything else I should be looking for?

From what I have been able to find by looking at a bunch of threads, it looks like I need to look for a Developer phone with Android 4.4.2.
What else am I maybe missing?

For the Dev Edition it doesn't matter what version you're on, you can root no matter what.

The only reason you would need 4.4.2 for easy unlocking is if you were on a non-developer edition phone and were using Sunshine. Dev editions can be unlocked, flashed, and rooted quite easily. Non-developer editions though, you want to be on an earlier release of Android, although there is a root method for 4.4.4 now, so you may still be able to unlock the bootloader.

Unlocking the bootloader is needed to run a custom rom, custom recovery, etc. and to ensure the ability to root no matter what ROM is on your phone.
Stick with a Developer Edition XT11060 for Verizon. You can get the bootloader unlock code directly from Motorola, for free.
If you get a RETAIL or Moto Maker variant, so long as the phone was never updated to 4.4.4 or higher, you can use Sunshine to unlock its bootloader. BUT Sunshine relies on exploiting a vulnerability to unlock the bootloader. There has been some question on if the vulnerability will be patched in Lollipop and could that pose any issues for those who used Sunshine to unlock. Will it re-lock them or will the unlocked status survive, etc? I have not seen a definitive answer.
While there is a ROOT method for a certain 4.4.4 build for non-Dev Verizon XT1060, that wont allow you to flash a custom rom or recovery, and it doesn't turn off write protection so there are some limits.

Thanks for bringing this up OP. I have a Verizon Note 4 and quite frankly I'm tired of the size and it's the longest I've been without root. Not to mention the lag with the TouchWiz lollipop build is driving me crazy. I now want a smaller (sorry Nexus 6) bootloader unlocked rootable android phone. After getting a pre-paid moto g to play around with I'm digging the smaller size and the resolution is more than acceptable. The Moto G should be even better.
I initially looked at the 2014 X but Verizon never released a developer model. My only hesitation to the 2013 is Android M. Is that coming to the 2013 X? And do people here have experience buying refurbished 2013 developer Xs from ebay. Pretty cheap around $110 to $150.

To clarify - if I get phone that's already unlocked because the previous owner got the code from Motorola, would I be able to contact Motorola in the future for the unlock code if I needed to re-unlock the phone or do they only give that out once?

OK, I was under the impression that they come bootloader locked so that I would need an unlock to achieve root. Am I mistaken?

People often get SIM unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) confused with bootloader unlocked when someone just says "unlocked"
The Verizon XT1060, Developer Edition or Retail/Moto Maker are SIM Unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) out of the box due to FCC 700 C-Block rules.
All 2013 X's ship as bootloader locked. The ATT XT1058, Republic Wireless XT1049 and Verizon Retail/Moto Maker XT1060 editions can not get the bootloader unlock code from Moto. The rest, including the Developer Edition XT1060 for Verizon, CAN.
Once bootloader unlocked using the code from Moto, the phone will stay that way unless you re-lock it. However, keep in mind there are 3 states of the 2013 X bootloader Locked Status 0 (as it ships from factory), Unlocked Status 3 (after you unlock via the code), and LOCKED Status 2 (aka relocked). We as users can not toggle it back to Status 0. Because we can't get back to Status 0, there is no real reason to try and relock. The "bootloader unlocked" warning message shows when status is NOT 0. *IF* you buy a used XT1060 Dev Edition where the previous owner as re-locked the bootloader, you will need the code to unlock it. The codes are unique to each phone.
I have no experience requesting the bootloader unlock code from moto for a USED phone, so I can't be of any help answering that question.
I purchased a used xt1060 dev that the previous owner had relocked the bootloader....not sure why. I was able to get a unlock code from Motorola no problem.

I have my used Dev Moto X Verizon on order and look forward to the XDA fun when I get it
So I think I'm finally going to need to get a new phone soon. But I can't afford anything high end ATM. So I'm thinking about gting a 64gb tubro that can be unlocked, but I'm wondering if there is any reason I should settle for 32gb and gt a moto maxx instead. I think I read U can't unlock relock and unlock again with the xt1254 but I dnt see needing to do that anyway. Anything else I should know about hacked turbo vs officially unlocked maxx?
1) Be best if you keep using model numbers like in your title, instead of names like "Turbo", "Moto Maxx". There's two Turbos (Droid Turbo XT1254, Moto Turbo XT1225), there's two Moto Maxx even (XT1250, XT1225). Using model numbers keeps it straight.
2) If you get an XT1254 64GB, you are looking at Amazon, eBay, Swappa? Be aware some people have sneakily locked their bootloaders back before selling. I don't know why. If I were buying, I would pay more money for an unlocked bootloader -- the hard work and cost has already been done. You will need to see proof of bootloader status. If the bootloader has been locked back, it's worthless for you.
Also, you would need to see proof the phone has not already been upgraded to the OTA update pushed out by Verizon in May -- SU4TL-49, unless the seller can show you the bootloader is indeed unlocked. A lot of people who took the OTA before unlocking their bootloaders are now selling them due to their screwup.
Sunshine bootloader unlock exploit ($25) only works with SU4TL-44 (Lollipop 5.1) . If the phone has not been upgraded to Lollipop 5.1 and is still on 4.4.4 Kitkat, you can update it to SU4TL-44 using a file in this forum. But you would have to be careful not to take OTA updating it to SU4TL-49.
3) An XT1250 (U.S. Moto Maxx) doesn't have any conditions like that, but comes in 32GB only.

I've never re-locked bootloader, so I don't know. Once unlocked I keep it that way...
Same here, that's y I hoping U guy would help. So it soundz like if I gt the right build number and it's not relocked, and I don't ever relock it, I should be golden. I can gt a 64gb xt1254 cheaper then the xt1250 with only 32gb I just don't want to mess myself over.

If its been relocked you can still reunlock it as well its just a little bit trickier and there is a chance of bricking your device if not done properly bur as long as you have a computer with fastboot adb installed you should be good. I have never reunlocked myself but have read and helped others in reunlocking there own its in the forum here somewhere. So no matter what as long as you can get that turbo on su4tl44 you should be set.

Then that's new information I haven't kept up with. Earlier some people re-locked for unknown reasons and they were told they were out of luck. It was a one-time only process.

Seems iffy. Better to not have a re-locked bootloader in the first place.
Thus far everyone that has followed beaups unlock instructions it's worked for. I think the issue is it's not something as simple as adb boot loader unlock
