I found guides on how to install Magisk on a G6 Plus and G6 Play, but not on a normal G6. Is there a way to do that?
If I unlocked my bootloader, grabbed this TWRP and flashed Magisk, would that work or would I need some dm-verity boot image like in the Play-guide?
Any advice on how to get Magisk on my phone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Looking at the same thing, but with XT1925-12(I would expect these to be the same) on Verizon(don't know if that makes a difference or not). I was about to go through the guide for the Moto G6 Play(expecting the whole process to be the same, only with different ROM images). I am expecting to have to post the ROM images from my phone, and have to wait for someone to patch it.

This is currently being worked on you guys. The G6 is an entirely different piece of hardware apart from the plus and the play variants. I would recommend sitting tight for a little while, while Dev work is being smoothed out behind the scenes. There's no ETA, but there are ways to contribute to help Dev potential. There is a partially working TWRP for the ALI, but I would go so far as to say it's intended for developer/tester usage. Thanks for your patience everyone.
i have root on my xt1925-6
i installed the magisk manager, patched the boot.img with both "Preserve force encryption" and "Preserve AVB 2.0/dm-verity" checked, and then flashed the patched boot image through Fastboot. as far as i know certain modules don't work but i can use Titanium Backup which is all i really wanted

Verizon never allows their bootloaders to be unlocked. That is why I purchased the unlocked US variant (XT1925-6).

I quoted you two because you both mentioned having the xt1925-6 variant. If you guys were able to get root, I'm assuming you had no trouble unlocking your bootloader then, correct?
I purchased the xt1925-6 variant last night and tried unlocking the bootloader but the Moto site says the device doesn't qualify. I am far from a noob when it comes to this process, especially with Moto devices. I maintain several ROMs for the Moto G4/G4 Plus devices and am very familiar with custom ROMs and kernels (I've even already cloned the kernel source and am ready to make a custom kernel for this device).
Point is, how long after you got your device were u able to unlock the bootloader?

I tried within a couple few hours myself. Also tried today a few different times. The "bootloader unlock problems" thread on the Moto forums says to wait 24+ hours after purchase. I even read every bit of that OP and this device is definitely capable of unlocking.
I'll try again tonight and see if I have any luck then as it'll be beyond 24 hours.

Why can't those of us who have locked phones just flash the developer's edition OS? By the time I learned of the Developer's edition phone, I had already passed my 14 business days return of my phone. The long root process is a bit much for me... If there is no other way, I'll give it a try though...
I'm not exactly sure how Motorola's bootloader works, but I'm pretty sure the Developer Edition is signed with different keys and will possibly be a different size. Motorola's bootloader I'm sure checks these things and will deny it.
The bootloader is not part of the OS, it's a different thing all on its own.
It really does seem as simple as you said OP but there's been plenty of phones with locked bootloaders, if it was as simple as that, there wouldn't need to be SafeStrap and other bypasses / exploits.
If you haven't looked at JCase's new SlapMyMoto 1.0 root method, it is more simple than the previous versions. It still requires going back to 4.2.2 camera OTA and losing all your data, but some of the ADB/Fastboot steps were removed and simplified, from what I've seen.
OK after a lot of sweat, I was able to get back to 4.2.2. How do I know if I have the camera patch?

If you followed the instructions in the root guide and used the proper SBF to get back to 4.2.2, you should have the update. It links directly to the correct SBF for the root process.

Depending on the model of you phone you can flash the developer edition rom,
XT1060, Verizon Retail, Moto Maker or Developer edition can flash the same Developer Edition recovery images direct from Moto's web site.
XT1053, GSM Developer or T-Mobile USA can use the GSM Developer recovery images direct from Moto's web site.
BUT this won't impact your ability to unlock your phone's bootloader.
(If you don't believe me that the rom is the same, Do a FC /B of all files contained inside the developer edition recovery images requested from Moto's web site with those inside the roms/images downloaded from http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 and you will see other than the XML, all files are identical. And the XML just tells RSDLite what to flash. Also when you request the GSM Developer Edition recovery files, you get a file named.. TMO_RETAIL_XT1053_4.4-13.11.1Q2.X-69-3_MR2_1FF.xml.zip )
Well, after a day and half of sweating, and a few hours there where I thought I bricked it, it's rooted on 4.4. I have rooted every android phone I've ever had, and this was by far the hardest... This was surely the most involved root I've done. I think it's partially because I got this phone much close to launch than my previous devices. They all had one click root methods available by the time I tried.

True the X hasn't been out long, and to complicate that more, 3 roms have been there for it... release, first OTA with camera fix, and Kit Kat...
Combine that with newer phones being harder to root... and yeah, one click root method isn't a reality at this point.
So here we have stock files pulled from the Motorola Firmware Team on AFH Just mirrored for your convenience
I cant include the firmware for Verizon & Att due to the fact there bootloaders are NOT unlocked. Therefore if somebody reads this and corrects me, they cant flash it.
I have the stock files and Flash Alls made by me and @Uzephi

To use the flash all for Sprint and T-Mobile you simply unzip the file and put your phone into fastboot mode and hit flashall.bat and that's it. I have already included the fastboot file in the zip.

Question, is there a way to make the bootloader not say you've unlocked and flashed different software?
Also, can I just flash the stock boot?
anyone got stock boot img for t-mobile? if so can you send me a link please
Does anyone know if I can run the fasboot command to lock the bootloader after I've flashed this? I need to take mine back in for an exchange.

It half-worked for me. During boot-up, it doesn't give me the "unlocked bootloader" warning, but it *does* give me a "The OS installed is different" message. Looks similar, but the text is yellow instead of orange.

I'm trying to get rid of the "your device has loaded a difference operating system". Did you find the way to get the phone back to 100% stock?
First off, wanna give a HUGE THANKS to joemossjr for releasing this package AND for that .bat installer! Long story short, I was about to either claim warranty or Jump! (T-Mobile insurance/upgrade program) due to me trying to hook a USB Thumbdrive in over USB OTG (Kingston 16GB) and then there were slowdowns and app crashes, everywhere... heck it was to the point where I kept getting spammed with android.process.acore keeps crashing messages! Couldn't use many internet apps, no phone calls, and could barely text just to name a few.
I do got a suggestion though: is it possible to have a modified version of the June ROM package on Sprint & T-Mobile to where instead of having the stock boot.img, you can have the modified version with the Magisk root access? That would be great and somewhat of a convenience (YMMV; I used this patched boot.img on the 26.2 version and both system updates & t-mobile visual voicemail setup kept falling flat on its face everytime)
Thanks again, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
that not only devs given up with the g6 play, so have Motorola.
I have tried every way possible to re-lock and completely without an error, flash a stock firmware
i have had problems with boot.img recovery.img with every firmware, all saying bad key
i cannot in any way relock the bootloader.
every time saying please flash a valid android image.
I have tried every firmware image for my model xt1922-2
I have used search here, on many other sites, to no avail......
i can root quite easily, i have used guides galore, but nothing flashes correct
i am not a noob and have been flashing firmware since xdas early days...

It's very obvious, even for someone who has never flashed a single phone before, not to mess with the g6 play - you're stuck with whatever you've got. Maybe in the future that will change, but I find it unlikely.
At least you have an official version of TWRP. The G6 doesn't.

Official and unofficial is not even important. For the G6+ we just got Official TWRP but if you flash anything with official twrp your device is soft bricked. However, unofficial build works great with the exception of 1 or 2 GSIs. Official was made by a dev who didn't test it(or have someone with the device since he doesn't own it) on our device and attached one of our devs name to it without him even knowing about it. For some reason Twrp team decided to approve it as official with out confirmation it even worked which is bad news imo and really disappointed me.

Yes it is unlockable. Make sure you buy the unlocked version and not the Alexa or Android One version.
To unlock it, you first have to enable "OEM Unlocking" in developer options, then use fastboot to unlock the bootloader in fastboot mode on the phone.
You can't root those phones from Amazon. I got one and had to return it. Ended up getting a Google fi model (bare bones android, no bloat) and it was like 50 bucks cheaper than amazon but I did go with their service. End of story is that I unlocked the phone directly from Motorola and I rooted it no problem with Magisk.

No problem sir. Not saying you use this piece of technology but I could not get Xposed Framework to work on that phone. No matter how I tried it would boot loop my phone. Additionally if you are going to root it then you want to be aware of this thread:

It has the factory roms for all three builds (amazon, fi and retail) so you're fairly safe if something goes wrong.
Good luck!

I haven't used Xposed in some time but thanks for the heads up. I do plan on rooting. Get everything I need from Magisk with a few modules. I wanted to use CarbonROM but looks like it hasn't been updated in some time. Lineage will work just fine as it's an official release with regular updates.

Lineage works well, but be careful the last three (3) updates broke my phone.
You can recover it,but it is anoying as hell.
Posting in case anyone else runs into this issue. I received a used Moto X4 I bought on Swappa. This is the Android One version; still had a Fi sim in it. It appears a factory reset was done but when I went into developer options to allow oem unlocking the slider was greyed out. While troubleshooting I saw an option in the bootloader called Factory and decided to try it. I assumed that was a factory reset but it didn't appear to do so as I didn't have to run through the initial setup again. Though I did have to re-enable developer options, so something got reset. This time the slider to allow oem unlocking was no longer greyed out. I was then able to unlock the bootloader.

I wanted to run Lineage. At minimum, I wanted to block the Google bits from running for privacy. I'm out of luck with this phone, right?
