Should I get the Mi8? - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

My current phone is Huawei Honor 8 which has the poorest update, root, twrp, cROM support I've ever seen in my life.
My needs are: Good camera, good performance, decent battery life.
My questions are:
Does the Mi8 have good XDA support?
Does it have good custom ROMs?
How hard is unlocking,rooting,flashing twrp?
How hard is the unbricking process? (Asking this bcz despite all the ****s of my Honor 8, it had a good unbricking process which made taking risks easier)
OnePlus 6 is out of my budget, otherwise I would've taken it.

The Mi8 is honestly a better choice, at least in my opinion
It's proof that Oneplus phones have become overpriced since you can get the Mi8 for 100€ less and get the pretty much same specs. But people still flock to Oneplus like sheep even though Oneplus is slowly bumping the prices and keeping the same compromises, one of which is the lack of water resistance. And they throw money away on advertising which further affects the price of the phone.
Even if I had the money for one, I'd still go for the Mi8 simply because I don't want to buy a product from such a company.
But the Mi8 isn't perfect, just like the OP6.
You do need to wait 360 hours to unlock the bootloader, and the and fact is that the phone isn't as popular doesn't help for the development.
However, some people flashed GSI images and said that they worked fine ( don't take my word for it, though ).
I honestly can't think of a better phone in the price range that the Mi8 hits.
If you're in the EU, I advise buying it from Honorbuy.
I got my Mi8 SE from there and it came in 3 days and the price was the lowest I could find.
The best part is that they have them in EU warehouses so you won't need to pay for customs and crap of that sort.
However, if you somehow find an even cheaper offer, go for that one.

Dude, you drunk?
Honirbuy get anytime the baddest price

Try putting useful info when you try to disprove someone.
I did look into Grossoshop and Honorbuy as those were the only sites which offered the phone from an EU warehouse, and the SE cost more on Grossoshop. And 320 € in total for the SE and DHL shipping isn't a bad deal at all.
Do you know of a better site which offers the same for less money?

Does the Mi8 have good XDA support? Check the forums.
Does it have good custom ROMs? Check the forums. custom ROMs will pop up soon.
How hard is unlocking, rooting, flashing twrp? Very easy.
How hard is the unbricking process? (Asking this bcz despite all the ****s of my Honor 8, it had a good unbricking process which made taking risks easier) Don't know, why brick something?
I can buy any phone I want, whenever I want, I chose the Mi 8 because I like what Xiaomi is doing (not only with phones, other areas too). Everyone buys Oneplus, boring.

Thanks. One last thing, are there just two variants of every Xiaomi phones? Should I look out for anything particular when buying it? For example, LG G6 has many variants and only one of those variants support bootloader unlocking.

I suggest you wait for OnePlus 6T released, then OnePlus 6 prices will be affordable for you.

There's only one of each model when it comes to Mi8 SE/Mi8/Mi8 EE.

Since you have both, can you evaluate real life camera utilization on both devices with their native cameras installed?
I am most interested it they are able to focus moving targets when the light starts to be dimmer, even in low light situation. I've read / seen all camera reviews, but some reviewers are sometimes biased, so it is difficult to decide.

why I'm leaving OP3

So let's starts this off by saying that one plus killed it this year with this phone. One of my favlrity phone, i preffer over the nexus 6p
But unfortunately I'm going to go back to the s7edge. So I switched over to the one plus 3 due to root limitations and also wanted to walk away from touchwiz. I love the one plus 3 don't get me wrong but I guess there was something I was missing with the s7edge I mean. Tbh phones are in a stage where root is not really that valuable as it was about a year or two ago.
Ex. Samsung themes, allows you to change quick, overcloking.. umm not needed in neither device the one plus or s7edge (snapdragon 820). Phones are too advance for that need. I mean yes there is some good stuff still about rooting like exposed etc. But unless your a die hard cmte guy I wouldn't buy a device based on just root. Also I missed water resistance and Samsung pay. I know Samsung has a lot of gimmicks but by far the best mobile payment... and let's not forget that Damm display.. I never really appreciated until I put booth phone next to each other. The one plus 3 looks a bit washed out. I think is because the high blues in the display calibration. And srgb looks a bit too warm.
If you have anything to say please feel free!! as I want to know if anyone feels like me, or had the same experience.
I love the one plus comunity.
Cool story bro. Here's a cookie for your troubles.
All the best....
Well, if i was sitting in pile of money i could too do decisions like that but because im not im "stuck" with my awesome phone. After all, it is just el-cheapo top of the line phone.
Is this thread a Samsung ad?
Go ahead mate..
Aside all hate, I'd probably keep both phones if I have tonnes of money! I have used both phones. Now I do own OP3. Camera wise, OP3 is nowhere near the S7E. Performance wise.. oh comon... OP3 OP3 OP3!!!!!!!!!! I'd prefer Overall performance(lag free) over camera. I know the importance of lag free experience because I lived more than 1 year with LG G3.
S7E is one of the best phones for sure. So does the OnePlus 3!!!

I agree with you and yes I'll be keeping booth phones. This is not a Samsung add as clearly stated on the post one plus the 3 is beast phone you definitely get a lot more for your money than samsung. I'm simply sharing my experience. And idk how money came along in this. But okay.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the one plus.

I do believe in the famous slogan for one plus. "The flagship killer" and I'm stuck in money? Well I'm not my s7edge was purchased when my girlfriend got her s7 I went ahead and got the s7edge as it was buy one get one free and I only paid the difference between the s7 and the edge.
Ok bro bye.. Hav fun with ****sung samdung Shamesung.. While we get aosp and quick android N.. You will be busy trolling with Lagwiz..
Loosing root, custom recovey, unlocked bootloader and custom kernels and ROMs is not worth it, u r going to have issues with the OS on any Android rom, but with theses it's easy to go back or clean flash and restore backups, so all of that is worthing it to keep a working phone
What the [email protected]#€& is that? What kind of a thread is this? It's your problem /opinion... Use Facebook for that kind of sh#€... Bye

Yup..the S7 edge is a really good phone.
Anyway, if you don't mind to lose the various Custom ROM and mods..it's ok!
But that's the truth..a very powerful Hardware with only Sammy ROMs.
I bought op3 not only for the Hardware, but for it's capability to be more developed..there are many ROMs, for now just AOSP and one MIUI..but i think that there will be Ubuntu Touch too, Flyme OS and many other stuff.
But don't worry.. yours is a good choice!
I bought only samsung phones in the past, and my last sammy phone was the edge plus..a really good phone, but i hate to spend so much for a Phone thaf offers a powerful Hardware like OP3 (op3, 2gb RAM more).
Sorry for my bad English, I'm Italian
S7edge is very good phone, for end user who doesnt like to tinker. And simply use their phone as it is, with all goods and bads
it just doesn't worth it's price. Well, it will, once it drop by $100-200
I' don't understand half of this People as I clearly stated the one plus is an extremely good phone and all I said was based on my opinion. Everyone has their own opinions. I still have my one plus so when ever I do want to try something I can just pop in a sim. I'm not saying the s7 is better. In every aspect but it's a better display and Samsung pay which are the only two benefit that I mentioned. I love the one plus. But w.e people get upset if someone shares their opinion this is comunity. If I wanted to bash the one plus three which in no mean I do. I would bring up FACTUAL imformation stating where it falls behind the s7edge which I dint. Because I don't believe it does. It's a great device for its price and to develope. I even liked it more than nexus 6p. Which I had previously

Nexus or any ither android phone?

Just a question.
I had been thinking a lot about this lately. I have P8 Lite, and although it is a decent phone and about a year old, it seems to me that it is already obsolete in comparison to other devices.
I am writing this thread here, cause I have this phone, and I guess many of might be anxious about whether we get the N-update.
So my question is: Is it worth buying an android manufacturer-branded phone (LG, Samsung, Huawei, etc) or a Nexus phone, since we know that these phones (Nexus) are the ones that would be supported the most from the developers and get much more updates than the others?
I am totally thinking about buying a Nexus.

Thanks. From what I've heard it's an amazing phone. But the question was not for me purchasing a phone, but whether nexus have an advantage (referringto the updates and the software in general) over the other phones.
To be honest, If I could afford buying it, I would consider doing so.

Nexus do support updates a long time. For example the 5x gets even android n. And even the support time is over you will get ports or roms that feature the newest android version because of the god source. Huawei supports their phones long too. I think we will get n.

Also the Nexus 5 is getting Android N which is funny and also the Nexus 4 which is 4 years old is getting a dev made N update XD. And so you can see that devices even older than the 5x are getting support... welp. That answers the questions. But the Nexus device line screwed up after the Nexus 4 since they were at first cheaper and made accessible for a lot of people and then right after that their prices went up. Of course that is inevitable if you want to produce a top notch device early enough but if it were up to me I'd get a 5x and the lowest I can go is a 5 since those two are at a reasonable price and offer good support plus performance.

The Huawei P8 lite feels a bit behind because it was released just before all phones started getting fingerprint scanners and fHD screens. Also our design is plastic compared to most phones offering glass and metal at the same price.
So, we have some hours before the official pixels presentation. I had been thinking of changing huawei p8 lite with a nexus (most likely 5X - it's cheaper, although it has only 2 Gb of Ram).
I think it is a decent phone and could provide a high level of customization, besides the fact that is upgradable to android N. Since we are going to have 2 more in the google family, do you think that each of them, worth the cost of buying? From what I've heard/read it's not going to be cheap, or at least in affordable price, each of them. What do you think?

returned my 3t...

Ok so after I got my op3t I had horrible battery drain issues, after that my vibration got very loud buzzy and wierd... And I couldn't handle with the phone like that... So I returned it and got my money back...
Now I need a new phone... And I consider if to wait till mid + 2017 until I decide what phone to get or just buy an HTC 10 (or v20 but everyone say that it has stuttering problems)
now... what do you suggest? Should I get the HTC 10? wait? Or get a new 3t...?
(I'm not considering the S7 because no USB-C)
I need a very very good battery and camera
A very good performance
A nice vibrant screen and good build quality...
What phone do you suggest?
Or.. what do you suggest I'll do?
(Meanwhile I have a broken HTC M8)
Thank you!!!

HTC 10, V20 and S7 are the same price as him in Israel... You sure?
Unlocked pixel, or another 3T or wait for the S8
If I were you, I will try my luck to get another brand new 3T since you already said that the S7 were not an option anymore.
The lousy vibration might be the hardware or manufacturing defect, however as for the battery drain, for sure, I'm not experienced it. Currently, my 3T running on the latest OOS 4.1.0 with latest ElementalX kernel and the battery life is just fine for me.

man I suggest you to go for another 3T or HTC 10. I own both phones And I love them so much. HTC 10 will not give you the best of everything but the overall experience is perfect. and balance. the build, the screen, the feel in hand, the speakers, the camera and the nougat is so stable I can say its stable than most smartphones these day (oh wait pixel is the number 1 in term of software). you can head up to htc 10 forum and there is no complain thread. I can afford any phone but I still cant find the perfect 10/10 phone this year. I would say no even someone offered me S7 or v20 or ultra U for free.

I still have my M8. Going from M8 to HTC 10 is not a day and night different but its an upgrade tho because M8 still runs good in any day.
What I dont like on 3T is the amoled yellowiest screen and the camera. the rest im very satisfied if oneplus fix those in op5, sure 2017 is the year.

The plus 3 screen is beautiful and white. The whites are the whitest whites I have ever seen on a smartphone. What are you talking about? Maybe the one you saw had night mode on... The camera is actually pretty good and the 60fps video is amazing!

should i buy a one plus 3t? or wait for 5?

are you guys enjoying the 3t? worth every penny? will u upgrade to the next one plus this year? is it worth waiting?
As long as they continue to update the 3t the way they are, I'll be keeping mine for a while. Phone works great, looks great and I'm experiencing great battery life on the stock rom
I'm simply in love with mine. It has AMOLED display, hardware that secures future, good camera.
This can be told about many phones, but... Do they have so frequent software updates? Beta twice a month! Actually, developers are listening to people's opinions (obviously can't listen to everyone).
From what I've seen, many people who changed their phones from s7e/nexus to OP3T are really content with it.
Battery life is another great thing, it easily goes through a day and charges so quickly!
If you don't need a new phone urgently, you might as well wait for the next OnePlus phone. As much as we don't want to face it, OnePlus is likely going to put development for the 3/3T on the back-burner once the next generation of phones are released (looking at you, OP2). That said, the OP3/T is certainly an excellent device and worth its current price.
yeah its a killer phone. id get one. just did in fact.

I upgraded from the S7 edge to the 3t (like 2weeks ago) and I love this phone. Way ahead of the game, not a single particle of lag. That said, I will probably upgrade once the 5 comes out; as I love having the latest tech, but yeah. Getting this phone right now was worth it for me.
Upgraded from 6p and really like it!,
Just 2 features i really miss front stereo speakers and camera everything else is perfect for me
Best supported phone ive ever owned. Even with the nexus one, support from google still doesnt compare to oneplus.

I justified spending 400+ EUR on the 3T, because I thought at the time that I'm going to keep it for at least two years. And now I'm tempted to upgrade to the 5, because fsck yeah, this phone is awesome, can't wait for the next model. I'll just give this to someone in the family.
I looked to upgrade to something else but seriously - there's nothing else out there. It's at the top of it's game. Get it now, or if not in hurry for a few months. Wait.
Rumor
There is a rumor on OP 5 that it has a ceramic/glass back. Well if you don't wanna break it then...
Nothing official so.....
I still love the block type metal of the OP 3T so it is my ideal choice
When does one plus release its device?. Is it in August?..

It's all just rumor at this point. No announcement yet. And manufacturers usually don't tip their hand too early. Doing so would not only potentially damage the sales of the current device, but also may give their competition an edge.
I've seen some stories around that state that Samsung is buying up all the Snapdragon 835 supply. And being the Android market juggernaut, most (all?) other manufacturers are going to have to wait to get the 835. This alone may cause OnePlus to delay a launch.
The OP3T is amazing and I think OP5 will be even more. If you aren't in a hurry, would be nice to wait.
OP3t is a great device. Even if OP stops updates at nougat, the dev support will continue.
Look at the OPO, it has perfect nougat ROMs that are current. The OP3t will continue on with devs, cause it's a solid built device (as was the OPO). The OP2 had no nfc and the crap 810 cpu, and still solid on dev support.

I currently have a Note 5 and am looking to pick up another device for some additional R00T fun. My ONLY concern is the 1080p screen. I know this sounds absurd but we've been spoiled with 1440p. Can you really actually see a noticeable difference?

I understand you haha. I was a little worried myself, as a lot of people hyped it "down" .
Honestly, Samsung has the best screens any phone manufacturer can have. Comparing both, I noticed that the colors looked better on the S7 edge, and that the S7's screen gets brighter. Are those deal breakers? Absolutely not. The screen is great and 1440 p is not different compared to 1080p .
It'll definitely take the screen downgrade for a absolutely lagfree device. It's been almost 2 weeks and not a single app, or animation has lagged. Also battery life is great. Damn I still feel like I'm not using this device to its full capabilities lol
With how things are going, they seem to have found the hardware they really love, so they're developing their software now. I think they want to love their software as much as their hardware, so they may be sticking with the 3t. Look how many special editions are coming out, they got an otterbox deal and they acrually ship on time now.

If you want to use some vr hardware, then yes, 4k is better. Otherwise 1080p is faster to drive, and uses less power. So it's a trade-off.
I would get it definitely. Well i already did actually. Great phone I love it definitely worth the money and had a great supporting dev community. And if your worried about oneplus stopping updates it's no big deal cause there a lots of custom roms for this phone and there is a great community surrounding it.

What's your thoughts about this device ?

Asus recently announced their new flagship at a pretty aggresive price, for around 500$ you're getting an S845 with a big 19:9 ratio screen, dual camera, nice design ( maybe ruined by the notch ), you think the 5Z can compete with the Oneplus 6 ?
My opinion is that it's an iPhone X clone, there's no way around that. However, it's priced competitively and undercuts several SD845 devices. The only downsides really, would be Asus' track record with major OS updates, as well as their skin. I had the ZF2 3yrs ago and wasn't fond of their UI.
I'm sort of fascinated by the design, but I'm worried about development being DOA and the BL being locked. Also I want the normal ZF5 with the SD660 if it's below $300.
the specs looks good in my opinion.
maybe the only downside was the UI and development. ZF3 and ZF4 got only few roms.
but the device is running android Oreo now.
I'm eyeing now this device because of the wide angle lens, maybe this will be my replacement for my LG G5. I'm hating LG now for having select variants with unlockable bootloader and poor quality of the device.

In the US you have to buy the carrier free variant, but development is lackluster for LG phones now. V20 and G5 have some support, whereas previous LG models such as the G2-G4 saw more development. Sorta doubt things will pick up for the V30.
I'm hoping the ZF5's price will attract devs, especially those from oneplus devices.
icloned. I personally will never buy a device which is copy of an iPhone. During the presentation they seemed proud of it, heck they even called it the Fruit Phone X. Asus has just lost it, as has all the other OEMs who copy the Apple notch whether it be Moto, Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, LG. I would rather switch to Apple instead.

Hoping it also. :fingers-crossed:
Looking at price and specifications of the 5Z, as long as it's available with some kind of bootloader unlock then this is my preferred flagship beater. A single AOSP based rom like AICP or CRDroid for it and I'll be happy as long as we keep it up to date.

This!
This phone looks like really good hardware and actually from what little ice read, I'm seeing that Asus have gone a lot closer to stock with the software as well.
If the bootloader can be easily unlocked then all it needs is one AOSP ROM (which given it will be treble enabled shouldn't be too hard) and we are a go.
I really do think this will be a good device for them. With treble being mandatory for all phones shipping with Android 8, it should take away a lot of anxiety from manufacturers who provide poor software updates as long as the bootloader can be unlocked

well. we could ask the devs from ZF3 and ZF4 @planet9 @shakalaca @anhenrique if they will get the ZF5.
Looking forward for zenphone 5 with s636 price around below 400 and BL unlocked and source code release!
Seriously drooling over this 5z the specs are killer, as far as the notch I could care less that it resembles a essential p1. The specs the aspect ratio is spot on. Think it may be my next device after it's been out for a few months and see how it rolls. Hopefully Asus keeps the major updates coming for it and a place in the modding community. That sd845 tho.
I am considering this device. It seems to tick all of my boxes. I do wish it was waterproof, but for the price I'm strongly considering it anyways. Does anyone know Asus reputation with RF performance?

I think it's radio frequency, ie if this phone gets good phone reception.
There is also SAR (specific Absorbtion Rate). This is something that measures how much radiation a phone outputs to your body when the phone is at a certain distance. This is something that should be spoken about more. Phones can up the power for a better signal but it should be the optimisation of phone strength without outputting more radiation into your body.

Thanks for telling about about RF. And I knew about SAR, still:good:
My asus zenfone has heating issue. It is getting hot after 10 ,15 min
If this were offered in a Google Play Edition I would jump all over it. ASUS bloat and support, no thanks.
Asus told me via their FB account, that USB2.0 stated on GSM arena is incorrect. So afterall there is hope, that the SD636 version will be one of the first midrangers with proper USB3.1 with all its perks!
I just wish, that asus doesn't screw up something on the phone, because so far it looks like a killer phone.

The Moto Z3 Play will include the same SOC, so we'll see. I'm unsure of when the 5 will release outside of Asia, but they need to move quickly.
