Hello folks. I've been using Moto X Style for about a 1,5 year and I'm tired. Development is slowing down, the phone is really big (my previous one was LG L90). For some time I was looking for a nice, compact smartphone with good battery and decent price. Redmi 4X seems to fit my needs, but is it worth buying now? As far as I know the longer battery is kept unused, the worst condition it has - is 4X still being produced? How about development - how many LOS version may this phone get yet? How is battery life?
Or are there newer models which could fill my needs? 150mm height is too much for me; I like compact smartphones - otherwise I would get Lenovo P2 - that is a beast. Actually I tought that Sony Xperia XA2 would be nice, but that price...
What do you guys think?

As I mentioned, 150mm height is too much. I wish I had more compact smartphone.
Redmi 4x's android version range is 6-8 and thanks to treble we booted android p dev previews. About battery life my SoT records are: RR Luis build nougat 8hr 35min RR Luis build oreo 8h 12min android p dev preview 7h 3min
Project Treble seems promising. I wonder how long Android will keep compatibility with it. How about your opinions, then? Do you like this smartphone? Are you happy with it? Would you buy it again?

My previous phone was zenfone 6 (6 inch display x86 cpu) I was in your situation. It isnt even fit on pocket, lack of development, etc. Redmi 4x seems fine after 6 inch junk. 5 inch display, more custom rom support, Camera is amazing with gcam (miui default cam is fine too), 8 core cpu. Gaming performance is great and also it is cheap. Im definitely happy with redmi 4x

If u want to compact phone, santoni is best choice
Redmi 4X has several ROM's even project treble supported ROM's too.
Custom kernels available too.Development is quite good.
I think xiaomi less likely to make 5inch device in future too because as they are releasing newer devices in the range of 5.5 to 5.9 inches. For e.g. Redmi 6 has 5.5 inch display Maybe they produce 5 inch display phone with tight budget in future e.g. Redmi 4A.
I would say at least go for SD 625 device if there is any 5 inch device.
You've mentioned you might go for Lenovo P2 which has 5.5 inch display considering this Redmi 5 would be fine since it has 5.7 inch display and SD 450 and it's better than SD 435 and has same GPU as SD 625.
If there's any xiaomi store out there near by you live then try out newer xiaomi device yourself to get better decision on which device to get.
SD 435 is based on 28nm technology and now almost all new SD chipsets are based on 14nm or lower so it's better to get this devices.
With using only mobile data on Redmi 4X I do need to charge device in evening or night.
With mix usage it lasts 1½ days which translates roughly around 8 hours of sot. On MIUI 8 I used to get around 10hours of sot.
If you buy Redmi 4X now there's very chance that your phone will have white color notification LED.
Do let us know which one you buy
In the end I bought Redmi 4X since it was quite cheap. It fits nice in my hand. I'm not using it as daily yet, but "play" with it now.
Can you suggest me some nice custom roms (with as little bugs as possible)? Or maybe miui is the way to go (global or xiaomi.eu?). I just wish I could deactivate fingerprint scanner (I don't use it, but touching it with finger accidentaly wakes phone) and remove/disable some google apps. I heard root on miui is available on xiaomi.eu version.
First(I am sure you know it) get device's bootloader unlocked, it a quiet hectic process and will take few days.
The custom ROM's I'll recommend you are list below.
I have personally tried all of them and they are pretty good almost bugless, with good battery backup.
I haven't tried any custom kernel so can't say anything about them. If you wish you can try.
All of them are Oreo based.
1. Resurrection Remix OS.
2. DOT OS.
3. Nitrogen OS.
4. Havoc OS.
I recommend the new Xaiomi Mi A2 lite. It´s very handy too.
Watch this video from minute 6 on.

Any drawabacks on RR? I heard battery does not last as long on custom as on miui. How about camera and flashlight gestures? Can I set double click on power/volume button to trigger them? Or long click?
sorry doublepost
Of course no. Sd 435 is too old for q3 2k18. I think the minimum soc right now is sd636 (redmi note 5, and other phone with that soc). Iam currently using redmi 4x, but I'll trade this phone to a newer xiaomi (I dont have a lot of money, so i'll choose xiaomi)

I didn't faced any bugs since my usage was using social media apps, some photo editing apps, calls, camera (gcam) and playing PUBG mobile and clash royale.
I noticed the battery drain faster while playing pubgm in rr than miui so yes it does eat more battery when comparing it to miui. Using custom kernel you may get good battery life.
When using it on 4G LTE the battery was draining fast too and experienced device to go warm.
Yes, you can set camera button as far as I remember.
The last time i used rr was in last two weeks of April and early few days of May.
Last build was released in April and later there's no update made available yet.
I think we'll be looking at directly Android P based rr in next update.
To get latest security patch and Android P experience I moved to DOT OS and it's a good build and it also has all the customization that are available in rr and so does the havoc OS.
In my opinion all custom ROM's doesn't have battery backup like MIUI but it's not bad it's decent.
Flashlight gesture I don't know I didn't tried that but it should be available there.
Currently I am using MIUI 10 Global beta and battery backup is good I get SOT around 8 hours with mix usage but again when using 4G LTE it drops down to 4 or 5 hours of SOT.
Battery saver helps a little bit so it's turned on all the time.

10+ hours of SOT is just fantastic.
I(or rather we) used to had such SOT on MIUI 8.
I'll try this combinations soon in few days, currently on MIUI 10 Global beta 8.8.2.
Does firmware version matter?

I am planning to buy a Zuk Z1 which comes pre-loaded with COS 5.1.1 and still hasn't received COS 13 update; however CM13 is available and pretty stable. Now I'll buy the phone only if it receives CM14 sometime down the road. The phone has a Snapdragon 801. Is there a possibility that it'll receive CM14? I know it's hard to tell for sure but any seasoned people could make some gusses? Any help appreciated.

The OPO should get CM14. It's backed by a very, very strong developer community. Also, why hasn't ZUK seen the likes of MIUI ported? It's already there for OPO.
I'm a crack flasher, so I love trying out all sorts of ROMs, but I'm inept at 'porting' ROMs.

Even I'd love to know about a better phone at this price point.
So zuk z1 will support android 7.0 right??
Sent from my Z1 using Tapatalk
A better phone at this price point may be the the Redmi Note 3 Pro. From what I can see the Redmi has better hardware, faster 64 bit CPU, better screen, cheaper. The ZUK has a better camera, no SD card (bad if you want to flash from SD card or backup to SD card) older CPU but still ok. Front fingerprint scanner is also a plus instead of rear on Redmi. Redmi runs MIUI and CM
If you have had your ZUK Z1 a while are you glad you got this and not the a Redmi note 3?
Right now we can't say anything about COS14 but if the devs at cynogen mod are concerned about this device they might release CM14 for us
but the question is In India during the launch of zuk z1 lenovo claimed that they will provide updates for this device and we did not get a single update up until now
so thankful to the devs at XDA for developing roms and continue the android cycle of this phone
and i hope they do so for Android 7.0
Calm down guys! ?? it will definiely get CM14, unofficial or official.

I agree. I have two major concerns:
1. Availability of CM14 on the device. If not official, then unofficial. The unofficial part is a little dodgy because there aren't A LOT of ROMs for the Z1 which are updated on a daily basis. The updates for a device also depend on how popular a device is among the developer community. I can't really say about the Z1.
2. The aging SD 801. How does it compare to the 64 bit 650?
Other than that, spec-wise, the 64GB memory and OIS wins it over the RN3 for me.

I think from this point is all about preferences. I prefer a large display with a good dpi and colors and 64 Gigs of rom on a marshmallow nuclear rom. Redmi 3 pro is worh it also but i m having it now on spacex rom lolipop waiting to unlock the bootolader
and maybe get a CM rom.

SO which phones are the best competitor to a ZUK Z1?
Yes bro it will receive cm14 officially from cyanogenmod not from android
I wouldn't recommend the ZUK Z1 to anyone. Btw, typing this from my Z1.
The phone and the hardware is great. It's the crappy Cyanogen that makes the phone trash worthy.
Cyanogen is upto its neck with bugs. I too was excited when I first bought the Z1 but now repent that decision after using for 3 months.
Again, the phone is great. The OS is crap.
Experimental buil 7.0 launched on one plus one ...so wait

Hi.
I've been looking at quite a number of new phones recently deciding that its the time to upgrade. I bought a Oneplus Two but sold it on after it was just too big and heavy for me. Its was overkill for what I needed really. I currently have a Moto X 2013 which I love but development on XDA has pretty much stalled. I have been looking at the Moto X 2014 as it can be picked up new for a good price over here in the UK.
So would you say its still worth buying even now?
Cheers.
I think this phone is pretty unique, even if some people would consider it an "old" device, so I'd still recommend buying it if one is looking for an original approach to android.
A Snapdragon 801, a nice FHD AMOLED, a mean front speaker, an ergonomic and original design with sturdy build quality are definitely its main objectively strong points.
It's got some flaws, such as a slightly subpar camera and a small battery (which will still last the canonical 16 hours, mind you).
What sets this phone apart from others, however, is the IR and motion sensors paired with always-on speech recognition, which will give you surprisingly reliable functionality on a stock ROM, but those are unfortunately stuck at 6.0... If I had to choose one flaw in this phone, it'd be Lenovo's fault.
It's not like gestures and voice recognition don't work in custom ROMs, they do, but it's not the same level of optimization (I've explained it more than once in lengthy and boring posts like this one )
Bottom line: this phone is awesome, I'm running 7.1.1 ATM and it's a neat user experience, but I'm not going to delete that 7 GB TWRP backup of my stock ROM+Xposed setup anytime soon!
(yes, I have the 32 GB, I assume you won't even look at the 16 GB model 'cause it's really not worth it)
I think so. I just bought a new one (XT1096) with 64Gb off ebay. The shipping was slow, but worth the wait. It came from Hong Kong. My old one was 32 Gb. The battery wasn't holding well and BT was kind of flaky. I also bought a new Moto G4 for my wife. It's a great phone, but it's too big for me. I loved my old Ghost too. I was the perfect size.

I'd say it's the only ROM that doesn't make you regret leaving stock firmware.
Battery life and performance are both way better, but it's still got a couple bugs (charging while the phone is off doesn't show any percentage and 1080p recording is unstable)
I'm usually very picky about bugs and features, but this ROM really nails 95% of what it should.

Are you sure its better than Lineage OS? How much Screen On Time you usually get? How nuch you get on Antutu Benchmark?
I usually get around 4-5 hours of SOT on a 16 hour day. I use substratum with a black theme and sprinkle charges when I need to, but it's got solid standby. I never run benchmarks, but it's definitely smoother than marshmallow
I'm sure it's better than Lineage because I've tried pretty much every ROM and RR is essentially the most stable version of CM with extra features and improved battery

Yes, I haven't updated to the latest build yet but I can confirm that recording 1080p videos will most likely reboot your device. 720p works fine and is not that much of a loss on a smartphone sensor

Hey guys,
I am currently using a oneplus 2 but i am pretty impressed by the looks and the egronomics of mi5 not to mention how thin and light weight this device is. Keeping everything simple n straight, I just wanted to ask that is it wise to upgrade to mi 5?
My main priorities in preferred order are battery life, custom rom development, camera and then everything else.
My usage pattern includes a lot of continuous gaming preferably online multiplayers like mini militia and MC4.
On the contrary, I still prefer compact devices with a 5 inch display over a 5.5 inch.
My oneplus 2 is still rocking and I can easily get 2.5-3hrs of SOT with gaming and 4-4.5hrs without it.
Moreover, I wanted to know about the known cons or problems with mi 5 if any as if by any chance buy it, I'll be using it for at least 2yrs. I am just hesitant to buy it because only the 32gb version is available in my region and the phone I am currently using already has 4gb ram and 64gb storage!
I'll be grateful for any helps and suggestions!
Thanks!
Since you are already with one plus I would recommend you upgrade to the OnePlus 3/3T
Mi 5 is a great phone for sure but OP3 is much better for sure also if you are ok with the extra money
I see there is a lot less community development going on as no one seems to be really interested in replying with an reasonable suggestions or help as its been long since I asked for them!
Anyways, I'll still wait for someone to come up until I don't buy some new device!
it is one of the best phones in its class.
well, personally, i dont really like how op3/t looks, and 5.5 is too big for my taste. if you looking for decent camera, performance, and looks, i definetely consider mi5 altho OP3/T is so much better in terms of performance and rom dev as you can see, right now i'm rocking purenexus custom rom on my mi5 and the performance is top notch tho camera still prefer miui based rom. Anyway, these are some points from my usage :
1. Battery life is decent in original MIUI rom, but best at Purenexus rom, beware not all custom rom have great battery life
2. the vibration motor in Mi5 isnt as good as others, even compared to mi4c, i know, its nitpicking, but really for long term use this little thing is quite significant
3. 3GB of RAM arent enough for me at least. if u interested, please consider the 4gb ones
4. fingerprint is not that fast, and the area is quite small
If you really wanna use this phone for at least 2 years, i do think OP3T is your best choice for support. but idk, the kernel source of Mi5 already out, so maybe we'll see better support.
Mi5 is really great device, it is very cheap, and the specs are very impressive. the battery life is very good, here is a picture of my results but note that I don't play games. Custom ROM development is good, not the best nor the worst. I think you should consider waiting a bit more and buy mi6. it will be a little but more expensive but the specs will be much better.
My prime was stolen recently, shame as I thought it was a slick phone, need buy another, though considering the 4x instead, it's slightly cheaper, a bit smaller (though still five inch screen), specs are similar, apart from very minor core / cpu differences. Prime HD screen apparently, res'* better though less battery due to this I presume.
Not sure about miui updates 9"etc /Nougat?
I have never used a 4x, any members with your preferences, knowledge and info'* so I make the right choice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Redmi 4x is just a lower budget and less powerfull than redmi 4 prime, but the battery is the same (or better) thant the 4 prime, since is 4100mAh. You can use it with no problems, miui 9 is receveing updates and it's on nougat (not planned to go to oreo tho). And we still do not have official kernel sources (if you are into kernel stuff).

Much thanks.
You think the screen resolution between the 2 makes much difference?
There is a red 5 out, Identical, on nougat, but only a 3000mhp battery.
I read Redmi prime does not update to nougat. Only redx can you confirm this?
Im still running miui 10 and beside sensor issues in the worst moments and batteryperformance decreased (8-10h sot), im pretty happy.
The release of miui 14 looks pretty interesting, same like miui 13. Unluckily xiaomi will never bring any of those and therefore might xiaomi.eu never aswell.
Meanwhile is there any miui13 port which is super stable and perfectly working (i heart of ghost, miui tn, aphixrog). Im looking for something to flash, forget and never regret (for the next full year).
How is the battery performance ?
I would prefer stock vendor & kernal, no custom "magic" from few days experience dev .
Or should i forget about the "upgrade", stay on miui10 and investigate the drain issues ?
I've tried Abhix.

Depends on the usage, but everything on my phone is adjusted to consume as less as possible (but i havent done wild stuff like lower clockspeed, kernal, voltage... only debloat, disabled everything which could be battery intensive in settings, using leandroid + greenify), meanwhile i range between 7-9 hours i guess, when i fresh installed it i ranged between 8-11 hours.
My battery should still have efficiency around 85-90%, im trying to hold battery between 15-85%.
To answer your question. I personally think everything after miui 10 is bad.
I may gonna try MiuiTN, according telegram groups that seem to be the best miui 13 port.

I checked miuitn 13 A12 but it doesn't have all languages (there is English and a few Asian ones only). Android security updates are from June, while RaphaelOS (also Miui 13 - 22.8.25, A12) are from August 1st. In general, I have the impression that all these roms are very similar. On stock kernel geekbench is 690 and 2675. On Steroid is 700 and 2747. But AbhiX feels more snappy.
Both roms (AbhiX as well) are without encription so you need standard recovery (I have latest official OrangeFox).

If there is a workaround to get native language in apps for me personally its not a big problem if i got english in os.
I havent tested a single miui 13 port so far, so i cant bring useful informations to this conversation unluckily.
According telegram groups MiuiTN seem to be the most stable, balanced rom and others are "kanged", but well yeah people talk on telegram...
I unluckily wont have time to test all of them myself so i might follow your experience ;D and maybe some other guys come along this thread and share their experience aswell.
Worst case i stay another year on miui 10 and get Rog Phone 6 after... Im just hell of annoyed my sensors do not work how they should on miui10 sometimes.

About Rog Phone 6 - it bends -
About native language - you can try https://github.com/BlueCat300/XposedAppSettings/releases
Dont go for RaphaelOs.
Better go for Miui12 or MiuiTn.
Im on VoltageOs 2.1 which is awesome, i heard also good stuff from Los20.

8-11h SOT? Picrel or didin't happen.
Which version are you going to test (https://miuitn.vercel.app/Rom_MiuiTN/Raphael/) and is there any info how to install (recovery version, filesystem, etc.)? And the most important - how safe is this?

BTW I'm using Evolution X with stock settings at 72Hz with no battery saving tweaks. I bought the phone more than 3 years ago and use it daily. Afraid to replace this beast because I'm so used to this good SOT.

I easily reach 10 hours sot + on voltageOS. I shared some screenshots of 11-12 hours sot on my 3 year old battery in telegram group with light-medium usage. My idle is dope aswell, most of the time lower then 1% (ext4, voltage2.1, bitgapps, magisk delta).
I heard similar good from LOS20, Android 13 seem to be awesome in terms of background managment (im using 100+ apps).

Did you perhaps have a chance to use EvoX as well? If so, how would you say it compares to VoltageOS?
I've heard only good things about VoltageOS. Are there any issues with it, stuff that does not work?

I have used EvoX 2 years back for a while, cant compare it unfortunatly and i wont flash another rom until i buy a new phone probably.
Well unluckily there are a few issues on Vos2.1:
- Udfps unlock sometimes does not work. (there seem to be the same issue on Los20 and according Los20 dev it seem to be a issue with android system)
- nightmode, reading mode, extra dim does not work together with dc dimming after unlock. (according Voltageos dev this is a common issue on most aosp roms)
- from time to time i notice scrolling laggs and rarely in games aswell. (could be related to kernel, but not sure)
- expandable screenshot ?long screenshot? slightly buggy ? (on miui it have been working better)
- on twitter i have noticed some issues like i couldnt go back to overview after reenter app, on discord after editing i have noticed scrolling does not work anymore. (but those issues can be caused by the app / restricted battery setting / android system idk)
Thats all i have noticed so far, more or less (if i have not missed anything). Anyway im very happy and think its a really great rom. The only thing which is bothering me the most is udfps unlock inconsistency and for night mode + dc dimming i am using twilight. (those things have been working better on miui, not gonna lie. )

Thanks for the thorough review, friend!
I might just give it a go one day. I must admit that MiuiTN also looks tempting since I like the classic Miui style, but I can't find much reliable information on that rom.

I have not been using miuitn for a long time, so i unluckily cant tell you more about that. Miui13 ports for sure arent as stable as official releases / xiaomi eu roms.
So it might depends on your personal usage, you might not get around trying it out at your own.
You can also join the telegram group, there you can follow discussions about miuitn releases. People this days most likely use telegram. (which i personally dislike over xda, but what ever.)
