As this device supports Project Treble, it is possible to flash and boot generic system images.
Things needed:
Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 with unlocked bootloader and twrp recovery
Instructions:
1. Make a system and vendor backup in TWRP
2. Download any A only GSI from web or here
For now, AospExtended is the most stable and has only 1 bug i.e. no out volte. Flash any other gsi at your own risk. If you do, please report which one you flashed and what are the bugs in it.
You can always restore your backup to come back to stock rom.
3. Extract the gsi if it is in rar/zip format to get system.img
4. Copy/move this system.img to your fastboot directory
5. Connect your phone in fastboot mode and enter the following command
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
TWRP can also be used to flash system.img to system partition, if it doesn't work, try with fastboot
6. Press and hold volume down + Power on to force reboot to twrp
7. Now, if you want flash gapps, make a system backup in twrp, reboot to recovery, and restore this backup you just made
8. Flash gapps now
10. Reboot to system
If there is no audio in calls, flash call audio fix
If it doesn't boot for you, try flashing magisk

https://forum.xda-developers.com/as...ow-to/guide-revert-to-stock-rom-lock-t3798420 follow these instructions.
I tried to flash PHH-Treble but I might be doing it wrong.
So I went trough the bootloader and did these steps:
- fastboot erase system (to remove the current system img)
- fastboot flash -u system [Phh-treble system img name]
After doing these steps my phone went into bootloop back to the bootloader.
Can someone tell my what I did wrong?
Maybe install twrp, format from twrp snd after installing phh

Can I root this and how rooting this, please ?
Yes you can, but you need an unlocked bootloader.
1- Unlock bootloader.
2- Flash TWRP using fastboot.
3- Use TWRP to flash 'Magisk'.
Et voila !

You can root this using canary module magisk. But you will not be able to use the recovery while it is rooted because in pie you do not have ramdisk to patch so we will have to patch recovery_ramdisk using the canary build magisk manager and have to flash the patched recovery_ramdisk to the recovery_ramdisk partition in fastboot, hence we will not have recovery, but magisk root will be available.

Where is this canary version? I flashed magisk but get bootloop from xposed. I just extracted my current recovery ramdisk and patched then flashed but as xposed is causing the loop it doesn't matter what I flash. A fix would be wipe and flash but I can't wipe at the minute. I haven't heard of canary though, do you have more info?

You can patch that manually, using the magisk app.
Just extract the boot.img from the stock miui and then patch it using the magisk app.

I also want to root my Note 9(QJOEUXM at 12.0.10.0). But I've read contradicting information here in the forum regarding the approach. E.g. the VBMETA.IMG. Do I need the patched version or do I have to flash the originals with the command fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img?
I'm a little cautious because I already wrecked the Note 9 with the original xiaomi flash tool when trying to downgrade.
Or can I easy use the XiaoMiTool V2?

The patched vbmeta and the stock vbmeta flashed with "disable-verity and disable-verification" are exactly same.
Any patched vbmeta from any miui version will works perfectly.
OK. Here you wrote that the RECOVERY.IMG is needed. But this File is not part of the stock Fastboot Image. Do i need the recovery.img or just
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
and the Device has root.
As far as I understand, I still have to flash the recovery to get the TWRP recovery.

Or, you can just enter in fastboot and flash the preloader of V12.0.4.0 and you will can skip bypass the EDL authentication.

also, any 'new methods' for flashing Magisk ?

so, you flashed TWRP recovery, by booting the TWRP from your PC ?
OK... I can try that.
exactly. i connected with adb and checked with adb devices, then pushed the twrp image to the phone and booted off of it through fastboot. if it works booting off of the img it's pretty safe to flash
To flash a custom recovery on Spes, you need to first run the following command in fastboot on the pc:
fastboot boot XXX.img (this is the name of twrp/ofox/Shrp image)
then inside the recovery, you must go to advanced and select the option flash this twrp, with that the recovery is installed by default. But remember that every time you install a new rom, the recovery will change, so you should flash twrp every time you finish installing a new rom.

This is actually pretty tricky. I found 5 different recoveries for spes/n:
OrangeFox-R11.1_A12.1-Unofficial-spes.img
twrp_v.3.6.2_11_spes-2022.08.14.img
twrp-3.6.2_12-0-spes-Jabiyeff.img

Only with this last one I was able to successfully decrypt my existing (PIN protected!) data partition of the following ROM I currently use: MIUI Global 13.0.13.0 (RGKEUXM)
I hope this helps anybody.

Both the TWRP 3.6.2-12.1 and TWRP 3.7.0_12-0-spes works on my phone (SPES Global)
I am on android 12 version of MIUI 13. In fact I used the TWRP 3.7 to flash MIUI13.EU 13.0.5 A12 ROM and it works.
The two versions above can decrypt my phone without any problem. MTP also works in recovery mode.
Your phone is using Android 11. Probably that's the reason the TWRP versions I've mentioned above does not work for you.
I tend to agree with NeoSDAP.
