I have lineage 8.1 ROM (but this applies to other roms too). When I connect USB to the phone, the folders won't appear instantly. First I have to pull down status bar, then click on "Android System - USB charging device", then I must click there again because it says "Tap for more options", then I select "Transfer files" in the next window. So connecting the phone to the computer needs 4 extra touches on the phone, which is very annoying. With my 7 year old Galaxy S2, if I connect it to the computer, the storage will appear instantly, I don't have to set anything. Is there any solution to show the folders by default after connecting USB in Nexus 6?
i don't think it is a problem. stating with marshmallow (android 6) and windows computer you have to pull down quick menu and allow file transfer. one extra step. i think lineage os added those extra steps.
also your galaxy could be on older version of android.

On my Nexus 6 running ABC ROM I can change that by going to Settings --> System --> Developer Options --> Select USB Configuration and selecting "MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)" but it seems to revert back to "Charging" frequently.

My Laptop running XP SP3 has an issue with the Nexus USB driver.
It worked great since Jan, but yesterday adb started getting disconnected sporadically. Now my laptop freezes every time I plug in the N1. The mouse gets stuck and it does not allow keystrokes either. The instant I unplug the phone it goes back to normal.
I sometimes get the device not recognized icon before it freezes.
Here is the system error from event viewer, it repeats.
Code:
The description for Event ID ( 6 ) in Source ( USBSTOR ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: \Device\000000da.
What I have tried:
Disable/enable usb debugging
Restart the phone, Restart the PC
Using other USB ports
Deleting all the USB root hubs and restarting
Disabling USB debugging and plugging it in, still gets stuck
deleting the adb, composite, nexus devices using USBDeview
deleting the keys corresponding to the two vendor/device ids from teh registry, restart and the reinstall the driver.
Dont know if its related but I added the device IDs for the Droid-Incredible to the driver .inf and successfully used it two days ago.
Another change was the installation of XP SP3 a week ago.
I think the next step is to delete all the Nexus driver files and reinstall them...
Anyone else experience this?
updates:
Followed this and deleted all teh "unknown devices" under USB Controllers. Now the USB mass storage mode works, still gets stuck when I turn on usb debugging
Deleted all the non connected Google/Nexus devices under "Disk Drives" too. Next I connected the N1, it froze for a few seconds, showed both "new device" and "device error" icons...
works a few times.... then bluescreens.
still hangs, BSODs.... can hardly develop as my laptop spends most of the time restarting when I try.
Heres the text from the article that helped...in case it goes down.
To get rid of that unwanted driver, device, or service:
1) Open the “Start” menu and choose “Run…”
2) Type in “cmd” (without the quotes) and click “ok”.
3) At the cmd prompt, type in “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1″ (without the quotes) and press enter. (Note that nothing seems to happen–this is ok. We are actually setting an environment variable which is going to help us to see hidden devices)
4) On the next cmd prompt line, type in “devmgmt.msc” (without the quotes) and press enter. This will launch the Windows Device Manager Console.
5) In the Device Manager Console, from the “View” menu, select “Show Hidden Devices”.
Now, as you expand the different drivers and devices in device manager you will see not only the items that Windows currently detects as installed on your pc (these are the usual items displayed), but you will also see drivers, devices, and services which have been loaded in the past but were not uninstalled or are not currently started. You can find your offending device, right-click, and choose “uninstall” to remove it from the system completely.

Heres an official howto on installing the ADB driver.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
I think it has something to do with XP SP3 that was isntalled recently.
Any more suggestions other than the ones I've tried above?
Going to try and get this 3 year old laptop replaced asap.
i'm 99.9% sure this is due to a bad usb cable.
Who would have thought!
Anyone else having problems with your PC not recognizing the phone? Even after selecting mass storage in the usb settings, when i plug the phone in to the PC the little usb notification in the notification isn't showing up.

Have you installed the Samsung drivers?
yeah i've tried installing the drivers. the phone isn't even putting the usb icon in the notification tray anymore. just starts charging and that's it. i go to usb settings/mass storage and nothing. any ideas?
I got that too, I just put the usb cable in another usb port on my computer and tadaaaa: problem fixed
I had this issue and read in a forum (not sure where wish I did to give credit) where u need to format your internal SD memory (the built in 16 gig SD) I did that and it started to work again.

I had/have this problem sometimes too. choosing "ask on connection" usually works. I find that if you select anything other than "mass storage" then exit out, then go back in and choose mass storage, it works again.
Usually only have to do it once after a factory reset or on a new phone
I find my connection to be hit or miss. The pc picks up the drivers fine but doesn't mount the phone as a drive. Kies is a pain to get going too. I read on here that you need .net framework 4 and also no file names over 16 characters, and without kies I think you need to be in debug mode on application settings. I still need to try the short file names and see if it improve it but I never really hook up to a pc anyway, my father has win 7 and I have kies on his computer. I have linux mint 9 on my own so I rarely get to fitz with it on a windows machine.

I'm having this problem, can't get usb debugging mode to turn off. It immediately turns on when I turn it off. It's as the just says, "yeah, you can uncheck it, but I'm gonna leave it on."
My Galaxy Tab when connected to PC via Samsung KIES runs fine... but when I connect it as Mass Storage, it doesn't show up in My Computer... I even tried re-flashing the TAB again to overcome kratos and the default stock rom... to no avail... need help...
To make things a bit clearer, here's the setup...
USB Debugging set to OFF / PC running Windows 7
USB Settings set to SAMSUNG KIES
PC detects the TAB as GT-P1000 and I can access the internal storage... though a tad bit slow when transferring data & stuff...
USB Settings set to MASS STORAGE
PC detects the TAB -> TAB displays USB Connected -> press CONNECT USB STORAGE
PC detects TAB as Android UMS Composite USB Device -> note without drive letter
After sometime, I've finally found the culprit... here's my solution:
#1 - Set USB Settings to MASS STORAGE -> Connect TAB -> PC detects TAB but doesn't show TAB as USB Device
#2 - run the program diskmgmt.msc via Windows Start Button->Run->diskmgmt.msc
#3 - Disk Management loads all detected hard drives & USB media... saw my TAB's icon without the drive letter... (it seems Win7 had a hard time assigning one, maybe because I've got lots of USB drives)
#4 - Right-click on the TAB's icon and on the context menu choose -> Change Drive Letter and Paths...
#5 - Simply assign a drive letter and voila! Your TAB's detected again as USB Mass Storage
When you try to use mass storage do you go into menu, settings, wireless and network, usb settings, and change it to mass storage?
Sent From Githrog's Tab
yes... it was working fine the last time I've connected the TAB as usb mass storage... but after the next time... it was no longer displaying on my computer...
same here.. using kratos overcome ROM.. my laptop detects the said removable devices but when i double click on it, it says it needs to be formatted.. =/
I am not sure if this will work, but see if USB debugging is on. If so, turn it off.

Already tried both, but to no avail... what could be the problem..?
Same to me and now I am back to the stock ROM though still no USB charging as original

Tried in stock, cm7, different usb ports, win7, winxp, reboot nc but no joy. My nc wont appear or get detected by my pc.
All I want is to transfer files from pc to nc
Did you click the button in your status bar to enable USB mode?
---------------------------------
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
which one is that? how will I enable usb mode?
is it the one with wifi, bt, gps, volume icon with the No notification?
how to copy movies and pdf using card reader?
When you plug into the PC, two extra notification icons should appear in the bottom status bar. If these do not appear then ignore the following, if they do appear then...
Pull the status bar up (with the round icon with the green up arrow or touch and drag up), then select the gray text that says "Select to copy files to/from your computer" You should see a little android guy with one button below him saying "click to turn on file transfer" or some such. Then it should show up as a drive on your PC.
there is no notification icons that appear in the status bar near clock and batt...
It says "No notifications" too in wifi bt crosshair volume bar...
I have the same problem with my nc not showing up...
Can not connect to PC with USB. Using SD to boot to the CM7.
Have not found anything regarding the USB mode.
Where is it?
on your OC... Nook NOT connected....
Go into device manager...
View... check "Show hidden devices"
Under Android Phone... delete "Android Composite ADB Interface"
Under Disk Drives.... delete any drives that are "B&N Ebook Disk USB Device"
Under Portable Devices... delete any drevices that are not currently connected
Under Universal Serial Bus controllers...
select each device that is not a "Universal Host Controller" or is not OBVIOUSLY not nook related (i.e. "Apple ...." or "Generic USB Hub" or "SAMSUNG..." etc...
Check the properties of the device... on the "Details" tab... select "Hardware Ids".... delete any that are "USB\VID_2080...."
Install the drivers then connect the Nook
I actually had this problem for quite a while. Check the microUSB connector on your cable, if it's even a little bit loose, you may need to replace it. Just call B&N up and ask for a replacement, they should give you a free one.

its charging and its not bit loose but can't even get detected, not appearing in my pc, and no message from both nc and pc using stock firmware.
You could check MyPhoneExplorer from http://www.fjsoft.at/en/
Should work on CM7 with USB and WiFi.

Then install the drivers and connect Nook to computer... also as mentioned above check your cable... you can also try a standard uUSB cable and not the nook cable.
WalangA, are you still having problem or being solved? Let me know, I might able to help.
Also, pls tell us you're running CM7 from where? eMMC or uSD.
If you have home wifi, here's another option: go to the market and download WiFi File Transfer. Start Wifi File Transfer on your Nook and it will give you a number (something like 192.168.1.3:1234). Open a browser on your desktop and put whatever number shows on the NC into the location of your browser. You can then move files back and forth - no usb cable needed.

I'll try to manually install driver and look for normal usb too.
Hi,
I really hope someone can help me!
I've recently switched from iPhone to Android. Previously with my iPhone when plugging the phone in via USB it'd basically turn into an iPod and allowed me to play music through the speakers of the car. But with my Android (Huawei P20 Pro) I just get an error message on the car's screen saying "No supported data found". My car does not support Android Auto so that's a no go.
Does any one know any settings can be changed to allow me to play music via the car speakers using USB?
Cheers
Chris
Make sure the phone USB settings are set for Audio source or MTP. When plugged in the phone should show a pop up showing USB options you need to choose MTP or Mass Storage Mode. Another option is enable developer options and set it to default to MTP, to enable developer options goto settings, about phone, and keep tapping build number 7 times. You will get a new option called developer options. In there scroll to "select USB options" about half way down and there you can change the USB options. But im not sure if this will affect charging etc so take a note of what it is before changing so you can change back if it dont work. To be honest you should just get the notification on the phone when plugged into the USB, make sure you check the notifications area as its sometimes hidden there.
If you don't see a pop-up menu, just swipe from the VERY top of the screen, you should see USB options as described by marshyrob
