Hi all,
I am creating this thread so that we can investigate what can and what cannot be done with the iPhone & Gear combination.
Let me first describe my experience so far, for anyone who may be interested. So let's say you want to use the Gear with your iPhone:
First of all you need to have null ROM on the Gear (see respective thread). I have null 15.
You go to full settings and then bluetooth and make the watch discoverable.
Then you go to the iPhone and search for devices (not the other way around).
What works:
1) Basic BT handsfree functionality.
They couple OK and this is it. You have a glorified 300 euro BT handsfree in the shape of a wristwatch!
2) Internet tethering via BT.
If your iPhone carrier settings do support tethering you can also tether the Gear via BT to the iPhone. I have seen that the tethering process works but unfortunately i was in an area of no signal when i did the test (don't have an iPhone right now) so there is no hard evidence. I mean i did not see a webpage loading but i think that tethering is actually device independent. Someone please confirm.
What doesn't work:
1) Notifications (which renders the added value of the whole smartwatch concept kind of questionable)
2) An automated or even manual (but no PC/cloud involved) way to transfer photos/vids taken with the Gear camera to the iPhone.
3) Caller ID with name. I have extensively tried this with both an iPhone 4 and a 5S both on iOS7 and both not jailbroken and when a call is received i only saw the number even if the caller was in the contact list of the iPhone and the native contact list on the Gear itself.
I am searching for a solution for bullets 2 and 3, since i will swap my S4 for a 5S very soon but i do intend to keep the Gear for the time being.
Any comment/personal experience/help will be greatly appreciated.
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
As of June 11, 2014 XDA member @Accounti provided the first (and only so far) solution, regarding iPhone & Gear cooperation.
Ladied and Gents, please welcome CloudNotifier Cydia tweak.
All notifications from jailbroken iPhone can be sent via Web to the Gear (and many other devices, as it is web based). It is not a direct BT connection, therefore NULL ROM is required so that BT tethering is enabled.
I would like to personally congratulate @Accounti for his work and kindly ask that relative posts are done in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784802
Please let us continue in this thread regarding the iPhone & Gear connection methods.
i tested everything all the day. I can confirm, it works, tethering it's fine, browsing, play store access, email, also I installed Whatsapp and using it.
A problem with this, after some minuts the internet connection become "on demand" so if you receive for example a whatsapp message you don't receive immediately the notification but you will receive the first time you connect to something (for example browsing a page or sending an email).
I'm searching a way to keep internet connection alive or to wake it every 15 minutes just to have live messaging with whatsapp.
I can confirm the problem with the caller Id, i think the problem it's that the iPhone does not push contacts to gear when you pair, and when a call comes the gear look not in the contacts list but in the pairing contacts, that is empty...
---------- Post added at 01:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:13 AM ----------
Another problem, set every volume in gear to zero, only vibrating, iPhone is in silent mode to, when a call comes the Gear makes the ringtone anyway. It's a bad problem for me cause i can't use ringtone at work...
NZ, you do realize all this device needs is an app to communicate with. It is completely possible to make the Gear work with an iPhone.
Someone with some decent IOS App writing skills could make this work.
Stop filling this thread with your nonsense.

@gidi, did you try bluetooth transfering your files to your iPhone from the Gear ?
Not sure iOS supports bluetooth file transfers, but it should work.. along with bluetooth sharing contacts I believe, I activated that service too

@fOmey unfortunately i do not have an iPhone right now. Maybe will have the 5S within the day and then i will test and get back to the thread.
However, BT file transfer is a no go on an iPhone that is not jailbroken. Truth is that iOS 7 is a little more relaxed compared to older iOSs but i cannot confirm anything.
With a JB iPhone it may be a totally different story, however. There is tweak called BTnotificationenabler that transfers ALL push notifications through BT.
Could you please check what the profiles that the Gear supports are? Also, could you add more profiles, just in case?
Thank you dude!

That's a shame about the bluetooth transfer, although ! The bluetooth notifications is quite interesting.
What profile do you require for the bluetooth notifications ? As for adding new profiles.. I can activate additional services which have been included already, although it's kind of hit and miss if they will work ! .. If it's some weird proprietary services sadly no.
I have included majority of the useful ones already..
Hi Everyone,
I did a little thread cleaning. I think that this thread is perfect for xda. Although xda usually doesn't support iPhone development, I think most of the development here will need to be done on the Galaxy Gear side. As long as people are willing to help and test ideas, I say go for it!
Thanks!

fOmey i will search a little and get back to you.
I will alsotry to get in touch with a dev who has managed to make wonders with iPhone and Pebble.
Thing is, if some basic functionality can be achieved, then the Gear market will truly expand. There are many iPhone users who would love to use the Gear.
UPDATE: It might also be worth it if you could take a look at this: http://support.imwatch.it/downloads/
I have used the imwatch in the past and it can work both with iOS and Android.
Appart from the tethering function, i remember that when pairing with iPhone a special BT profile (do not remember it's name) was utilised that allowed the imwatch to download the whole iPhone contact list over BT.
Actually the Gear is all the imwatch was ever hoping to be and maybe some more!

Absolutely, the work is on the Gear side, cause iPhone already use the Pebble or the I'm Watch, so it's the Gear that is missing something. Thank you

Good idea Man! Look into the I'm Watch firmware is good, the profile used for sms is the Message Access Profile (MAP).
No way to save contacts manually, the Gear see it as empty. Is there a possibility to modify directly the contact file?
fOmey maybe you know witch is the right file
Just talked to fOmey in the chatroom of his website.
I informed him that jb for iOS 7 is out.
Now the news: fOmey has an iPhone also and i am trying to convince him to invest/waste some time trying to make the Gear - iPhone combination work.
Told him about the BTNotificationEnabler tweak (https://github.com/conradev/BTNotificationEnabler) and the MAP profile that is being used and he said that his ROM may already be supporting it.
If there is anyone with an iPhone and a Gear who wants to see the combination really work, please post to this thread. It could provide some motivation for fOmey!
I know he can do it if he decides to spend some time working on it.

I'm here baby! What i have to do? Jailbreak+btnotification+Gear with null15?
But, just a question, if the MAP profile is already in null rom, why i can't receive sms? Maybe fOmey means that the rom is ready but not with MAP already inside.

Maybe list of profile should help. Put everything inside null please! (Lot of people could use, not only Apple owners)

I have activated profile MCE in the current version of null_ which is a MAP profile, I have just finished activating MSE which also is a MAP profile, this will be available in the next version. So in other words all profiles in reference to MAP will be activated in the next version of null_ (16).
Take a look at this page for a better understanding.

It's auto-enabled when you turn bt on? Because when an sms arrive nothing happens, and from iPhone side it's always turned on.
fOmey maybe you can make some test with your iPhone

fOmey my man if i got this correctly then the MSE (server side) profile should be enabled on the iPhone and the MCE (client side) should be enabled on the Gear.
However, "The MCE device shall use the services of the MSE device only after successfully creating a secure connection", which kind of concerns me.
But again, in fOmey we trust for everything Gear related.

Any workaround for the caller id issue?
With calling id names and MAP the Gear could be the perfect device.
I thank XDA for coming up with this section.
We would provide you useful information about one of the most powerful app Tasker in this section.
Not taking your much time I will tell you 'WhatsTasker'.
Tasker:
Its actually an automation app, through which you can create tasks according to your needs and let the app execute them on required time, perticular action/motion, on launch of an app etc.
How is tasker different from other automation apps?
We find many automation apps in play store which can some what do same things, but here tasker is highlighted in the category because of several reasons that i can find out.
In tasker any novoice use can start developing GUI (Graphical User Interface) and convert the tasks to apps, apk files.
Tasker doesn't wants you to have development skills or programming knowledge.
Tasker has many plugins which are directly used to control any hardware devices in your home, for example, you can control lights in your home or your Smart TV by using some plugins.
Just search Tasker in ay Store and start your project right away.
I will be back with more interesting information and will also publish my projects here.
You are always welcome to put your topics in this section following the forum rules.

@thahim and XDA. thank you for this thread. I actually needed some info regarding a sequence of tasks i wanted to accomplish. I am on Nexus 6, using MultiRom, and while its an amazing mod, my problem is that Whatapp messages and texts do not carryover from one rom to another. So i sometimes do a TiBu backup of SMS and Whatapp, and when i goto another ROM, i restore the data. Is there away to automate this using tasker? When i goto swtich ROM, the backup happen automatically, and at boot on the other side, the restore also happens automatically.
Hello brother in dont thinkbyou can do this with tasker. New rom may erase data from tasker and from auto remote you can share files yo cloud but cant retreive them from there. But if you have sd card, you can make tasker to copy the backup folder and retreive it back.
Thanks alot. Hope you will understand.
If you have any further questions do let me know.

I had a quick question actually. Please let me know if this is the appropriate area to post this. This is regarding tasker and autowear. More specifically autowear, but I didn't see any subforum dedicated to autowear. My question is this: So I've spent a lot of time creating screens within autowear. One of them is a Pandora UI with buttons linked to autoinput actions. I wanted to see if 1) I could create a new notification screen that included the 4 screen ui I've spent so much time on and 2) while creating tasks within tasker, if I can use screens I've already made. Every time I try to add a new plugin, auto wear, it only gives me to option to create them from scratch. Am I missing something here?

Hi, the new ROM will not delete the current data. The multi rom mod allows us to have multiple roms on the device simultaneously. Each rom has a separate system and boot partition, while all ROMs share the user data. Since the backup will remain on the sd card, i have been able to restore data from one rom to another (while on multirom, not while flashing different rom )

I purchased and followed a very simple tutorial on youtube. Tried to make the first profile which is location trigger. Turned on location tap gps icon at the top screen but nothing happens. It is not doing anything to locate me (home). Out of frustration i uninstalled it and play store said it is cancelled and will be refunded. I would love to have this app but why it didnt work?

Is there any way to make Android Auto force immersive mode with root on my car? I wonder if there is a way to hide the navigation bar.

I didn't realize you had a solution to prove it was unstable, because all root solution are unstable? I'm just trying to figure out where and why you are generalizing here.
You're only about a year and a half old on your response though. Better late than never I guess

Well, first of all I did not talk about any unstable solution. In fact there's no solution for what you've been asking. Moreover I've talked about Android Auto being UNUSABLE. How would you get through all the menus and screens of Android Auto? Swiping up from the bottom, you'd say. No, it's not implemented in Android Auto.
I did not even talk about root solutions, because it doesn't even matter what root solution you've gone with.
Let me explain this more deeply:
Android Auto user-configurable options are the one you see on the settings of Android + developer options.
What you can change with root are some settings inside Google Play Services. Android Auto actually reads a lot of things from Google Play Services database. There are many flags that modify some aspects of Android Auto (e.g. you can force the new Android Auto UI, or hide the status bar etc.) but none for the navigation bar.
But there's more. You can change the resources inside the package (the APK) and edit how the app behaves. But you can't just decompile the APK and compile it back, because it would break the original signature and therefore make the connection to the car broken. You can edit resources via Xposed, but there are no modules for what you are seeking, and honestly I don't think anyone would be interested in doing that. If you'd like to, go on and make a module yourself.
Lastly, I could be a year and a half old, but giving the fact that you can't actually read what I've wrote, I can think the exact same about you
Greetings

Great, you're offering some more explanation here than just some single generalization that leaves everyone guessing. That is something we can discuss.
The question was about implementing immersive mode. I agree with you that you can't navigate Android Auto without, well, navigation. How does immersive mode work? Wait, it has no navigation right? Ah, navigation is hidden, but available with a gesture. So in my question, I'm asking about a solution that has navigation right in the question.
Anyhow, I see some good ideas there, like Xposed which makes me start thinking about Pie Controls which all seem doable with some kind of draw over control.
Answering with "go make it yourself" isn't constructive to the discussion. Just because you don't see value in something, doesn't mean it has value to others. But I see you like to make generalization about what people want too.
You must be the life of the party when you, A) show up a year and half late, B) make generalization about everything and everyone, and C) tell everyone to do it themselves.

Although i agree with you, i just wanted to mention that, you can control android auto without softkey. Look my solution :
(If someone could create a way to hide android auto bar, i suppose he could also make a way to control it through gensture, like i do for android). But you are right, there is no solution. Anyway look my video may give some ideas what can be done today and what not:
I too would think this would be cool. even if the bottom icons stayed so you could still navigate and the bottom black bar was transparent or something.
Beta 1.0 released
I will like to start saying a very big thank you to @bggold who asked me to consider this in the first place
While there isn't any way to use the nice Google Assistant voice, and it's still rough around the edges, this demonstrates how we can use Android Auto in a multi-lingual environment as well as how to read out and reply emails.
The concept is very simple, instead of relaying on Android Auto to read out the notifications I have created a small app which mimics that behaviour, with some extras:
1) It try to do a language detection for each test, and use the appropriate TextToSpeech
2) It allows the user to select which app notification does he/she want's to read
3) If the content is really long (like a lengthy email) the app will prompt the user if it want's to go ahead with the message readout or not
4) If notification supports quick-reply the app will prompt the user for a reply (in the same language as the the original message)
Planning to support a lot of languages but there I will need user input, I have translated the basic strings to around 70 languages using Google translator, but I can tell it's not quite right (I can see with the languages I do speak)
Best part, app won't be affected by 3rd party restriction at all and it won't require root either, however I'm pretty sure Google will not allow it on the PlayStore
Beta version available now on XDA Labs.
App will be payable, however current beta is free so grab a copy while you can
To use the app you will need to enable unknown sources in Android Auto, simply open Android Auto, go to About, tap the "About Android Auto" header 10 times till you become a developer, then from the 3 dotted right menu select developer options and enable "Unknown sources"

Thanks for making this app!
After first start it asked for notification permission and then it was gone to build the list of installed apps/services - endless...
So I've forced close the app after minutes, went to app info/permissions, and enabled unselected permissions for it.
After that the app works now, as it should!
I'll test the functionality today while using AA in my car.

Thanks. It was 3 am )) updating the app now.
This is exactly what I needed. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work. Using Samsung S9 plus running Oreo. Gave read permission to the app, enabled developer settings on Android Auto, enabled unknown sources, enabled whatsapp and Gmail.
Whatsapp notifications haven't changed and it continues to read the foreign text in English. Gmail notifications don't pop up at all.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

Not sure if you saw but there is a new release. It fixes this issue. Just remember to reboot after updating.
Unfortunately I have the same problem as @yavuzyay. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge with Android 7.0 and Carnotifier Beta v3.
Thanks to @yavuzyay for bugreport and Turkish language input.
I have identified the problem where the app was crashing in case you where using AA on the phone only, and this has been now fixed.
@CeldeSuS - Are you phone only or are you using AA on the car? If phone only, download the new beta 1.4

I'm using AA on the car (Alpine X802D-U head unit). I'll try the new beta anyway and report back.
Awesome. Works perfectly.
V4 work fine with SM960F(android 8.0) & RLink1 !
Great job!
Very good stuff!
I use it with the now playing feature - basically phone picks up music on the radio,.detects the song and artist and throws a notification. This app picks that up and shows it as a notification on the car screen! I have disabled read out. So it stays as a simple notification.
Quick question - haven't been able to try it - if I set zero seconds as the duration, will it leave the notification forever?
Tested but not working as expected. Line is an application which doesn't support Android Auto.
Positive: Yes, Car Notifier shows there is a message on Line.
Negative: Can't do anything, it won't read the message, the notification stays in grey color and nothing happens when I click on the message.
Cheers

You can't click the notification to have it read at this time. If you want them read to you enable the read option.
"Read out notifications" is enabled in the settings, my Honda headunit is hacked and I have root access, so I don't think this is related to that.

I'm sure you have but have you checked all the permissions?
CarNotifier asks only permissions to Microphone and Phone, both are granted.
Wondering now whether it has something to do with the new Android Auto v3.8.584554 where some on Reddit claim, that notification is broken
Cheers
Tom
Edit: Maybe the the new AA version interferes with CarNotifier, because AA can show now also message preview
More edit: My friend tested on the Samsung S7 (I have a OnePlus 3T). Also on his mobile nothing happens with Line.
Can't read out and nothing happens in AA when click on it
Is there an app for Speed cams like in your obd2aa app, to have only the speed cam notification?

I am running the new aa and it is working. Get Emil a bug report right after it happens.
The only thing you can do at this time is swip away the notifications. Clicking them will not do anything.
Thanks
After more testing, I do believe the culprit is Line. Gmail works as expected, Facebook also (just for test).
However, Line refuses, which is actually the reason to install the program in the first place.
Probably one of the few programs which won't work.
Great program though.
Cheers

Hi guys.
I'm finally back in the UK and in front of my PC, I've also managed to tied up quiet a few of my loose ends and I have no big project starting this year. I will dedicated the last 2 weeks of this years to the following:
1) Looking into fixing some of the FC for obd2aa, also try to find a solution for non-standard PIDs
2) Get AA GateWay to Beta/Stable version (most work needs to be done on this app)
3) Fix some issues and FC with HUR (including Waze sound cut off).
4) Get the carNotifier to a stable version.
January and February are again fully booked so I will focus on stability rather then adding new features especially because obd2aa and HUR and fairly mature apps with most of the functions already covered.
For some reason I'm not really getting any notifications from XDA and being a lot on the road I don't visit the site too often lately, therefore I will kindly ask you if you need support, please email me directly to [email protected].
Hello,
I'm going crazy here.... I've installed Tasker on my new Lenovo Tab M7 TB-7305F (7 Inch with Android 9.0 GO - NOT rooted). Tasker works fine. Since I want to kill apps I installed the plugin "SecureTask". And: I succeeded to get it working. Everyting is working fine. Until I reboot. After a reboot: When I try Tasker to execute the plugin-command SecureTask - Tasker waits long and can't execute the plugin. It seems Tasker can't call the plugin SecureTask / can't connect to it. When I manually load SecureTask (Icon on the desktop - only a config-screen comes up - I leave the config-screen with the back-button): After that everything works again. It seems: After SecureTask was loaded once everything is OK. But Tasker can't start the plugin.
Humpf? After a lot of hours of investigating..... I'm out of ideas. Any help?
That sounds like there's a problem getting a background process running after boot for SecureTask. Assuming that all of the permissions for SecureTask have been granted through ADB, I would contact the developer and see what he says.
A work around might be to use Tasker to launch SecureTask after boot. You could then use it to close itself
Thanks... exactly the opinion I have at the moment. In the meantime I found a contact address in SecureTask itself - so I will contact the developer.
Enabling SecureTask after boot by Tasker.... good idea That will be a screen-flickering... but that's at 5 am - so nobody will care about that. I will test this... :good:
Just to report my efforts.... I contacted the support of SecureTask - and got an email-chat within minutes. Incredible support - thank's a lot, John Doe (support of SecureTask)!!!
He told me how to get a logcat. Reason, why it's not working:
BroadcastQueue: TabletMaster Service: not allowed to launch app com.balda.securetask/10110 for broadcast Intent { act=com.twofortyfouram.locale.intent.action.FIRE_SETTING flg=0x14 cmp=com.balda.securetask/.receivers.FireReceiver (has extras) }
=> The OS is blocking the broadcast. No clue why. So it seems my Lenovo Tab M7 TB-7305F has a strange behaviour... no chance to get it working.
Btw: Killing SecureTask with it's own didn't work. So I had to choose now a complete different approach without SecureTask.
airplane mode
Hi, bit off topic maybe, but I saw that this is a quite recent threat and it is involved with SecureTask plugin, so I decided to hook up instead of creating new one
This week I bought Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. It's operating on Android Pie and UI One interface. I'm reluctant to root it yet (all the more the procedure is not obvious), but I want to recreate as much functionality as possible from my old rooted Samsung tablet So SecureTask plugin is the obvious choice.
I'm trying to find a way to automate turning the airplane mode on/off. On my old tablet I created a profile that triggered airplane mode according the time schedule as soon as Tasker detects that the device is plugged in to a power source. I've tried to recreate this profile with the help of SecureTask. Of course in advance I granted to the plugin all possible permissions using adb and even successfully set it as the device owner. Then I found a secure setting responsible for turning the airplane mode on/off and set appropriate values. And when I test the created tasks, the green circle appears and the quick toggle in the notification drawer turns on, but it seems that the system doesn't listen to the call - the airplane mode actually doesn't turn on. The system seems to listen only when I turn the quick toggle on manually. So I wonder if there is something I'm missing or maybe it is not achievable at all without root on this firmware?
Would be grateful for any insight, maybe from you @ktmom, boss Thanks in advance.
@Lord Sithek, AFAIK, the only way you can toggle mobile data or WiFi radios is after a reboot and that may not work on all devices. Google "long ago" removed the ability to directly control those radios, even with root. Bluetooth does tend to toggle though.
So if it's going to work at all, you would have to toggle off and then reboot.
My opinion is its best to use touch emulations to activate the quick setting tile.

Ok, thanks for the response. I have Auto Input plug installed as well, so I'll give it a shot

The problem is that it needs to turn the screen on. I keep my device in book cover so... pain in the arse :cyclops: I think I'll probably switch to "do not disturb" mode, at least it works right away

I too just purchased a lenovo Tab M7 TB-7305F (7 Inch with Android 9.0 GO - also NOT rooted).
Sorry for intruding.
Have you found a forum for this tablet?
One specific question I have is with screen rotation. In android pie you get rotation control by turning off auto-rotation in settings. That way when you rotate the tablet a small icon appears briefly in a corner. When that icon is tapped the display rotates. If not tapped on the display does not rotate.
That is what happens in my other android pie devices. But for some reason this icon does not appear on this tab. So I'm looking for a forum for help. Have you found one?

I don't know if it needs root (I am always rooted), but there is an Airplane Mode On and Off in Tasker, under Net category.
I have a task that checks if %AIR is on or off, and turn on and off accordingly.

It still is fine to toggle mobile data on and off (in my case, either Mobile Data 1 or 2 due to having dual sims), as well as wifi, without rebooting. Even works in Macrodroid (the mini Tasker-like app)
