How is your p20 pro amoled black crush/black smearing looks like?
To reproduce the black crush/black smearing problem, you can try in two ways:
Option A
1)Change the setting menu to dark background:
Setting -> battery -> darken interface colours
2)Turn your display to the dimmest ( lowest brightness level) in a low light or dark room
3) try to have some scrolling action on the darken setting menu
4) You should see the white menu sub text has some smearing effect
Option B
1) take a picture which has a lot of dark/black spot
2) Turn your display to the dimmest ( lowest brightness level) in a low light or dark room
4) in the gallery, scroll left and right of those pic
5) you should see the black smearing effects on the dark spot of the pic
I will try to get some video on.
Mines looks pretty serious imo so do the displayed phone from the retail shop.
Not sure which vendor Huawei is using for this amoled. But I can guess for sure it wasn't Samsung amoled
Video taken:
Pay attention to the black wire of the earphone. You can see that whenever you drag there is black trail or smearing effect following the black wire of the earphone
It is very noticeable if you use your phone in the dimmest level of display and in a dark room.
iPhone doesnt really captured the smearing effects much though.
Im not too sure about the smearing vs s9. But i saw that the s9 crushes the blacks, whilst the p20 doesn't.
On black level tests my p20 can see all squares. My sisters s9 shows the first 2 or 3 as pure black which is not the case.
@ Sc00p007 youre right.

Not sure if i'm getting old or i can't see this.
Since i'm not using my phone to grade photo's while sitting in a pitch black room i'm not really worried about this.
I'm certainly not going to take the effort to setup this artificial test. I have better things to do.
So far from I had observed the black smearing only happened on gallery app and setting menu (if you set it to darken interface)

Okay I think I see what they mean. So it can really only be reproduced if
1. You turn the brightness slider down to zero.
2. You have black backgrounds enabled.
3. You scroll/drag VERY slowly.
The way to catch it is to
A. Do not lift your finger off the display when dragging the list in settings app. In super slow motion. Drag ever so slowly, like your stretching the writing on the display, and
B. Lock your eye on one same icon and see it fade colour or lose its brightness as you drag it or 'stretch it' with the same poised finger, without lifting from the display.
In other words, it is very difficult and unnatural to produce. But I can confirm it exists. I think it's a non issue for nearly everyone bar a very few people. I cannot reproduce it, for example in this dark themed official XDA app. Because the background is not true black and the text is white.

Lol if i have to go to these lengths to maybe see it then honestly? I don't care.
I think it's testament to this device if we have to look for problems like this.
I get it shouldn't happen, but i really wouldn't have noticed it without being advised.

I got a Nexus One last week and have a question for other Nexus One owners: has anyone noticed any weird "bleeding" or "ghosting" on the screen (not sure what to call it)? In the browser, I have noticed that, for example, if there are colored pixels on one row of pixels, the entire row of pixels seems to be slightly discolored. If I rotate the phone and hold it in landscape mode, the same things happens but then it is vertical instead of horizontal (that is, still *rows* of pixels going across the short side, not the long side).
Here is a crappy picture I made with the most noticeable parts highlighted:

Anyone else seeing something like this? Other than this, I LOVE the phone and would really hate to have to send it back.
Sure do
I never noticed it until i saw this. But sure enough when i opened the browser it had the same thing on the page that i was already on.
have the same prob and im positive everyone else does. Its a software problem as zooming in, everything is all sweet. So there will prob be some kind of fix in the future. Nothing bad enough to send in the phone.
It might be a software issue, but it shows up in every program it seems - if you look hard enough!
Hmm, HTC now wants me to send in the device. Anyone else see this? I don't want to send in the phone and just get another that has the same problem.
Try loading this and look at the background when you are zoomed all the way out:
http://herzeleid.com/n1/test.html
ive already told u. we all have this problem. if it bothers you that much send it in.
I tried really hard to look for this on my N1, but couldn't see it. I have better than 20/20 vision so that shouldn't be a problem
Anyways I looked long and hard in both portrait and landscape and couldn't see anything wrong.
u need to fully zoom out to see it. and like i said its a software issue.
I did zoom all the way out, no dice. Not using the stock browser though.
I live in Germany so I would really like to avoid sending the phone back if possible, since I would have to send it to a friend, etc.
If this is a software issue, I can deal with it since it can be fixed. It happens even outside of the browser though, so I don't think it is (only) a zoom issue. For example, I can see it in the Facebook program. On the Facebook home screen, there are 6 icons, with lines below them, and then text below that (see here if you don't know what I mean). I can see this discoloration between the lines. The "~" in the following diagram represents pixels that are not the same color as the pixels directly above or below:
Code:
(Icon) (Icon)
----------~~~~~~----------
News feed Friends
download dolphin browser and see if u still have the same problem
I see the same effect there.
i dont see it .. normal browser zoomed all the way out ... o well i guess im lucky
Confirmed; I see the same effect. Also on this live wallpaper:
The white stripes in this wallpaper will show the same thing. I'm going to guess that this is the case for all N1s.
Response from HTC:
After performing the test you recommended, I noticed a small difference similar to what you described. The difference I noticed was that there seemed to be a lighter colored line of pixels on the same row as where it says Advertising Programs, Business Solutions, and About Google--essentially what you mentioned. However, this line remained with that row when i scrolled the page up and down, and was also no longer present when the device was turned to landscape mode. It was not something I would describe as a bleeding, either, as this is the only row it happened in. However, I noticed many more lines when I checked the Google News page. When I adjusted the brightness to what I would consider a normal, high brightness, I had to look very closely to see the lines, but I could still faintly see them. When comparing it with the screenshot you included, it does appear to be the same type of issue. As such, I think you are right; it is apparently a limitation of the display. As for if anything can be done, the lines become much less noticeable if the brightness is turned up on the screen; there is unfortunately not anything else that can be done as it is a matter of the hardware. I do apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced, and I thank you for pointing this out, being patient, and helping to test this theory with the test and the screenshot you provided.

(I told him to check www.google.com, the row with "Advertising", etc. is just the bottom row of links there.)

Ahh yeah, I've my brightness turned down at the lowest (I find higher settings blinding--this is quite a screen). Turning it up does lessen the effect, but not make it disappear completely.
It was my understanding that is was just an issue/limitation of current AMOLED screens.
Just like an LCD screen looks bad when you view it from the wrong angle.
All N1s have the 'problem'.

My understanding too, there was another thread on here somewhere where someone said the same and seemed to know what he was talking about.
That said I cant see the problem on my screen, though that could be my eyesight though.
Its probably due to the unusual layout of the rgb pixels. I can now see it on Google home page in classic mode zoomed out.
No big deal. Perhaps their scaling algorithm was designed for an even RGB distribution, unlike AMOLED's. Its still readable, which is all I care about. Of course, I never really "read" a web page at that zoom level anyways.
Thank you for posting this on XDA. I have posted the same issue since day one on these sites.

The consensus from both forums is that it's the nature of the beast of an AMOLED screen. Which is disappointing. The screen is my only complaint about the phone. I have to keep it at 100% brightness not to see them. Which gives me about 2 hours of battery life.
I have a serious issue with the color repdoruction of two galaxy s units.
I have bought two used SGS i9000 phones but they do not produce the same colors, and I have warrenty for only one of them!
I have installed Slim ICS 4.2 on both of them to eliminate any rom issues.
Please see the attached images. The thing is, also I dont know which one actually has the correct color? I would definetely prefer the one with the dark tone, but maybe the one with the grey tone has the correct color reproduction?

It should be very obvious they do not produce the same colors.
I have checked in the device settings that brightness is the same, and that there is no difference in DNIe and color reproduction setting.
Could there be a difference in the display types or what the hell is going on?
Are you sure that the other device is not Galaxy SL because it has LCD screen not amoled
Do you mean the one with the "light" or "dark" tone?
How can you see the difference between the LCD and Super Amoled screen?
I just checked the one with the "light" tone and it is definetely a GT-i9000 (checked under the battery).
The other one I dont have at hand atm, but im 99,999% sure it is also GT-i9000 (I recall i checked under the battery when purchased).
If both devices are i9000 then i reckon there are some color tweaking problems.
Have you checked the "Device Settings" in your settings? This opens up the AriesParts.apk (aka Galaxy S Settings). Have you tried to play around with the Gamma Bar?

I have checked that both screen settings are exactly the same, i.e. as in default settings. In "color tuning" red, green and blue are set to 1.000 and red-,green-,blue gamma is set to 0.
But you are correct in tweaking the gamma bars can adjust the screen display to look more like the other (the dark one).
I just don't understand why they dont give the same output with the same settings.
Which one of the phones does your screen display look like?

The current screen condition I.e. Washed out colors made me think of one and one thing only. "Gamma"
It was very obvious that the Gamma was somehow increased beyond the default value, hence the washed out screen.
Just tweak it to make the colors look darker and you'll be fine.

Yea it even made me curious.
Did you check the colors on a Gingerbread firmware? (The stock one, not a modified one) Are they same i.e. washed out on that too?
So far, thats the first case i have seen like that. So i am sure its more related to some drivers problem and NOT with the phone itself.

I am not sure.
But its certainly not washed out.
If i were to make a choice then i would say that mine looks like with Darker color tone.
Again, i can make it even more darker by tweaking the colors.
-------
Lastly, for my curiosity, kindly adjust the colors using Device Settings and reduce the Gamma. Post another picture after that. I would love to see some results
I actually reinstalled stock gingerbread and the colors seems to be correct here ???
Very strange indeed I must say!

There must be something different in the displays and I dont think the drivers in AOSP supports both displays. Even though they are both AMOLED, there must be a driver difference between the two devices that I have and that you have.
Why would we otherwise have the correct colors in GB for both devices, but wrong colors in ICS?

I know the one with the wrong colors was bought 25/7-2011. So it was also probably manufactured also much later than the first batches of SGS which were shipped june 2010, so they could have used other displays, although still AMOLED.
The device producing the correct colors is definitely older.
I don't really know how to check when the display was produced.. How can i check that?
And also how did you send it in for warrenty. You also said the colors looked fine in GB in your thread, so the warrenty center wouldn't approve if you came in with ICS on it?
I have the exakt same problem with my i9000. It's from 2011 aswell. Must be a new display, which is not playing very well with drivers in AOSP.
No matter how much you tweak the gamma values, you can't get it right. VC or CM color, doesn't matter. CM is a little better.
No solution yet?
Is there no way of pulling the correct drivers from GB and use them in 4.x.x rom, or something like that?
Hello
I had my Galaxy S screen replaced and it's different indeed, seems there are different Amoled displays.
My phone was bought in Feb 2011 and I have CyanogenMOD 9 installed with Semaphore kernel
No new modifications have been done to the firmware and yesterday I had a Samsung Service Centre install a new screen for me, screen was original and I saw all the process. Now my phone's screen seems to a bit darker, like if the contrast was different and the colors aren't fully right
So I guess it¡s true and there are different revisions of the screen that seem to look different on custom roms
I don't have the GB stock to test

No. You don't need Tasker to use Vsharp. Vsharp is a stand alone application built on tasker using the Tasker app factory.
I just posted the source in the second post to show the work if someone wanted to look at it or modify to their liking
Actually my biggest complaint about the display isn't actually the stock sharpness setting of 4, but the gamma. The gamma on my V10 is off a considerable amount and I'm losing detail in dark scenes. It's definitely not around the more standard gamma value of 2.2
I hoping to tune that up in the future also with this app.

It's just like setting the sharpness on your tv. It should not have any effect on taking a picture. If you see some grain effect in a pic its completely unrelated to this mod. What your experiencing is noise in a dark scene which is typical of a small, high pixel count camera sensor.
When taking a picture, try to use the lowest ISO setting possible. In a dark scene the ISO will need to be greater for a properly exposed pic. This is when you will experience the most noise.

I personally set it to 0 as there really isn't any need for sharpening. It just introduces noise in the display.
SWEET! Thanks for this! I was really bummed that the screen on the amazing V10 was not as sharp as my G3. Now its just as sharp. (doesn't seem to affect the second screen, but don't care)
I set it to value 30...anything more and it doesn't seem to do anything. Also, setting to max, 99, upon reboot is goes back to 0.
EDIT: So.....maybe an issue. The sharpening effect dies when i launch some apps, like Gallery. I then go back into the VSharp app and its reads the value and its back to 4..like it was overridden by the system.
Edit: Removed Gallery, Switched to Google Photos app. Doesn't instant kill sharp effect when that app is used.
Sharpness not sticking after screen off.
I definitely am noticing that any sharpness value is not sticking/being re-applied when the screen shuts off/locked or goes to sleep.
I go back into the app, and it reads the current value and it says what i set it to (30), but when i toggle it up or down, I can instantly see the example bars sharpen up, which proves it was off then was re-applied when I toggled the value.
I tried setting the app to ignore battery optimizations in system settings, thinking maybe the OS is killing the app in the background, but that has no effect. I also tried disabling the lock screen entirely, no change.
Any ideas? I do have other things like Xposed, App settings (530 dpi set on certain apps), Gravity Box, and G4 TweakBox installed....but none of them have any display mods enabled.
Any way to make a widget or something i can one-press to toggle the value and re-apply....vs having to use the app every time I want the screen sharp after it goes off.
Edit: Is this app supposed to may a dozen and more "Subsystem/img_tune/" directories in /sys/class/panel/...all inside of each other.
Is there a way to just change the sharpness file and lock it to read only o that it can be overridden...I have tried setting permissions using root explorer to read only...but it still get overwritten at reboot..and eventually by system.
Do i need to set selinux every time i reboot and app runs?
I read a comment on gsm arena that an owner experiences the flickering issue of the device at high brightness. Is it the same to other owners?
I have that too, and I've watched a review video where the same issue got mentioned.
The flickering is in most probability a software issue. I figured that it was due to the Auto color scheme in Settings > Display.
I would recommend changing the colour scheme to your preference under Settings > Display and disable auto Coloring.
Hope it helps!

Tried it , doesn't work seems to work. flickering still exits especially on nightmode, switching to 60hz somewhat reduces it significantly
Also is it just me or the grey background in nightmode of apps like chrome , playstore etc seems uneven (like a reddish tint is present) at places at low brightness. Also on video playback at lowest brightness the reddish tint is present. Can anyone confirm?
I had no flickering after disabling auto colour scheme so far (I've only used it for a couple of hours though and even with auto on it's not that frequent). I don't see a red tint in dark mode.

Correction: I've noticed a reddish tint in dark mode in Google Discover. It affects only the upper and bottom parts of the screen, the middle looks fine. In some other apps (like Gmail) it only appears at a very specific brightness setting. It's not visible under the lowest setting, but once I increase it a tiny bit the tint show, and with another tiny increase it disappears. Also, its only at 120Hz, when I switch to 60Hz it's fine.
This is called Pwm flickering or pulse width modulation, when brightness is lower then 60/65% flickering appear.. with every step in lowering brightness flickering increasing. Dc dimming is only solution to prevent screen to flicker.
I haven't noticed any flickering on my Note 10 Pro, not even on 120Hz and low brightness. I did notice the uneven colors on top and bottom parts of the screen, on lowest brightness there is a strong reddish tint if using 120Hz, as I showed in another post:

Yes the greenish tint is present in majority of apps . It reduces to an extend by disabling "adjust text and background automatically" in dark mode settings.
And for the Flickering , perhaps try playing any videos on chrome browser at 120hz at low brightness. It flickers like crazy for me

And for the Flickering , perhaps try playing any videos on chrome browser at 120hz at low brightness. It flickers like crazy for me

Now I do see the flickering, but only if I watch youtube on chrome. The flickering is not present on the youtube app so maybe it can be fixed with a software update?
Thanks for the advice on the "adjust text and background automatically", it does improve the image at the minimun brightness (though it still looks quite bad on 120Hz...).
The thing that I actually found have helped more with the greenish tint is using the colors on "automatic" instead of Standard. I usually use standard because it's more faithful to the original colors and the automatic commonly gives a blueish tone but this blue tone masks the greenish tint, making it good enough at 60Hz that I don't notice it. On 120Hz it still looks too greenish at low brightness.
For me it only flickers when I change the screen orientation or pause/play the video, never during (in Chrome). Regarding the green tint, I agree that the automatic colour scheme makes it better, but actually enabling, not disabling, the "adjust text and background automatically" reduces the tint even more for me (it's actually more helpful than going from automatic to standard colour scheme). I do think it's mostly a software issue.
I didn't notice any flickering or color shifts so far.
120 Hz
Color scheme: Standard (custom)
Dark mode (adjust text and background automatically enabled)
Reading mode disabled
No flickering when viewing youtube on the Duckduckgo browser even with low brightness. I don't use chrome

rom: V12.0.10.0.RKFEUXM
i thought i'm the only one having this screen banding issue when playing youtube on chrome
Download the app activity launcher and search for antiflicker mode. It's a hidden setting in miui for our device. See if it helps for you

Videos played on Chrome still flicker a bit when changing screen orientation, but it's less noticeable. Thanks for the tip!
it has todo with the video I always watch food tour video and when the camera do transition or too much wiggle you can clearly see flicker quite annoying tbh

Maybe it's fixed is 12.0.10. I am on 12.0.6
I was on 12.0.6 and 12.0.10 Global, and now on xiaomi.eu 12.0.6 and there's no difference.
Need help to fix this issue with long exposure shots on my Redmi Note 10 Pro Max. I recently bought the phone and today when I tested long exposure shots it showed white dots in all the pics with same settings, higher the ISO, more clearly the dots were visible.
What can I do to fix this issue?
I attached 2 shots below that I took in complete dark room after cleaning my lens carefully, and for extra precaution I point the camera towards a black surface closely. These are clicked with "Wide" camera in pro mode with Shutter Speed : 30 and ISO : 6400, when I reduce the ISO, they dots fade away a bit. Ultra Wide camera produces similar results.
I even downloaded ProShot app to check if it does any good but, same dots at same place were visible.
These 2 are taken by system camera app, using above given setting (S-30, ISO-6400)

Which ROM and which cam?
ROM : MIUI Global 12.5.10 Stable and Camera : 108 MP, 5 MP, 8 MP, 2 MP and in depth details added as attachment.
Ping for @Laptapper
Mentioned the device details in the above reply.
That's hot pixels and/or noise. That's pretty much normal on any digital camera, especially on longer exposures and higher ISO. How much they're shown in the final image depends on noise reduction used - the less (less aggressive) noise reduction, the more they will be visible.
@Case_
Firstly thanks for helping out! And got what you're saying, so just wanted to know in my case, as I am on an android device, what measures can I use to fix this? Any third party app that'll process images with more noise reduction? Or maybe any way to change default settings of system camera app? Can't always switch to post editing to fix this, as it'll be tricky too.
@Sniper God I would start by not shooting 30 second ISO 6400 shots That can be a tall order even for a DSLR, let alone for a phone camera.
GCam ports have noise profile and noise reduction adjustments if you're willing to tinker. I think I saw a hot pixel removal setting there too. Also I've used the mobile Photoshop before for noise reduction. Other than that, I only ever use Snapseed for some light photo editing, but it doesn't have noise reduction (or I don't think it does, at least).
But yeah, as silly as the advice to not shoot shots like that might seem, that's honestly one of the best advices in photography in general - if your camera has some shortcomings, either take advantage of them and use them to improve the shots (which in this case is kinda hard), or work around them so the affect your shots as little as possible.

Got it, but I've been trying to shoot with nearly same settings using different phones, and none of them reflected any issue like this. I think I should try resetting the phone or otherwise get to the service center as it is under warranty period. It even does this with inbuilt long exposure shot settings that are made to shoot stars and light painting.
It all depends on noise reduction algorithms and settings used. Many phone cameras are pretty aggressive in that regard, so things like these will rarely show up. Though it can also differ literally sensor from sensor, even on a same phone model, to a degree at least.
It is also IMO more likely to show up using settings made for astrophotography, because those are likely to have the noise reduction set pretty low to make sure it doesn't remove too many stars and smudge the sky too much.
I would seriously doubt a factory reset will change anything. But, I mean, you've got little to lose by trying that. And returning the phone is certainly your customer right if you're not satisfied with it.
BTW, out of curiosity, I just tried it on my phone. I got roughly the same amount of hot pixels as you did. Which, frankly, is impressively low for a phone camera as far as I'm concerned I'm pretty sure I'd get the same or more if I shot a 30s ISO 6400 exposure with my DSLR. I don't normally even use ISO 6400, I even try to use ISO 3200 as a last resort.
