Bleeding/ghosting on the screen

I got a Nexus One last week and have a question for other Nexus One owners: has anyone noticed any weird "bleeding" or "ghosting" on the screen (not sure what to call it)? In the browser, I have noticed that, for example, if there are colored pixels on one row of pixels, the entire row of pixels seems to be slightly discolored. If I rotate the phone and hold it in landscape mode, the same things happens but then it is vertical instead of horizontal (that is, still *rows* of pixels going across the short side, not the long side).

Anyone else seeing something like this? Other than this, I LOVE the phone and would really hate to have to send it back.

I never noticed it until i saw this. But sure enough when i opened the browser it had the same thing on the page that i was already on.

have the same prob and im positive everyone else does. Its a software problem as zooming in, everything is all sweet. So there will prob be some kind of fix in the future. Nothing bad enough to send in the phone.

It might be a software issue, but it shows up in every program it seems - if you look hard enough!

Hmm, HTC now wants me to send in the device. Anyone else see this? I don't want to send in the phone and just get another that has the same problem.

I tried really hard to look for this on my N1, but couldn't see it. I have better than 20/20 vision so that shouldn't be a problem
Anyways I looked long and hard in both portrait and landscape and couldn't see anything wrong.

u need to fully zoom out to see it. and like i said its a software issue.

I did zoom all the way out, no dice. Not using the stock browser though.

I live in Germany so I would really like to avoid sending the phone back if possible, since I would have to send it to a friend, etc.
If this is a software issue, I can deal with it since it can be fixed. It happens even outside of the browser though, so I don't think it is (only) a zoom issue. For example, I can see it in the Facebook program. On the Facebook home screen, there are 6 icons, with lines below them, and then text below that (see here if you don't know what I mean). I can see this discoloration between the lines. The "~" in the following diagram represents pixels that are not the same color as the pixels directly above or below:

Confirmed; I see the same effect. Also on this live wallpaper:
The white stripes in this wallpaper will show the same thing. I'm going to guess that this is the case for all N1s.

Response from HTC:
After performing the test you recommended, I noticed a small difference similar to what you described. The difference I noticed was that there seemed to be a lighter colored line of pixels on the same row as where it says Advertising Programs, Business Solutions, and About Google--essentially what you mentioned. However, this line remained with that row when i scrolled the page up and down, and was also no longer present when the device was turned to landscape mode. It was not something I would describe as a bleeding, either, as this is the only row it happened in. However, I noticed many more lines when I checked the Google News page. When I adjusted the brightness to what I would consider a normal, high brightness, I had to look very closely to see the lines, but I could still faintly see them. When comparing it with the screenshot you included, it does appear to be the same type of issue. As such, I think you are right; it is apparently a limitation of the display. As for if anything can be done, the lines become much less noticeable if the brightness is turned up on the screen; there is unfortunately not anything else that can be done as it is a matter of the hardware. I do apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced, and I thank you for pointing this out, being patient, and helping to test this theory with the test and the screenshot you provided.

Ahh yeah, I've my brightness turned down at the lowest (I find higher settings blinding--this is quite a screen). Turning it up does lessen the effect, but not make it disappear completely.

It was my understanding that is was just an issue/limitation of current AMOLED screens.
Just like an LCD screen looks bad when you view it from the wrong angle.
All N1s have the 'problem'.

My understanding too, there was another thread on here somewhere where someone said the same and seemed to know what he was talking about.
That said I cant see the problem on my screen, though that could be my eyesight though.

Its probably due to the unusual layout of the rgb pixels. I can now see it on Google home page in classic mode zoomed out.
No big deal. Perhaps their scaling algorithm was designed for an even RGB distribution, unlike AMOLED's. Its still readable, which is all I care about. Of course, I never really "read" a web page at that zoom level anyways.

The consensus from both forums is that it's the nature of the beast of an AMOLED screen. Which is disappointing. The screen is my only complaint about the phone. I have to keep it at 100% brightness not to see them. Which gives me about 2 hours of battery life.

How is your p20 pro amoled black crush/black smearing looks like?
To reproduce the black crush/black smearing problem, you can try in two ways:
Option A
1)Change the setting menu to dark background:
Setting -> battery -> darken interface colours
2)Turn your display to the dimmest ( lowest brightness level) in a low light or dark room
3) try to have some scrolling action on the darken setting menu
4) You should see the white menu sub text has some smearing effect
Option B
1) take a picture which has a lot of dark/black spot
2) Turn your display to the dimmest ( lowest brightness level) in a low light or dark room
4) in the gallery, scroll left and right of those pic
5) you should see the black smearing effects on the dark spot of the pic
I will try to get some video on.
Mines looks pretty serious imo so do the displayed phone from the retail shop.
Not sure which vendor Huawei is using for this amoled. But I can guess for sure it wasn't Samsung amoled

Im not too sure about the smearing vs s9. But i saw that the s9 crushes the blacks, whilst the p20 doesn't.
On black level tests my p20 can see all squares. My sisters s9 shows the first 2 or 3 as pure black which is not the case.

Not sure if i'm getting old or i can't see this.

Since i'm not using my phone to grade photo's while sitting in a pitch black room i'm not really worried about this.
I'm certainly not going to take the effort to setup this artificial test. I have better things to do.

So far from I had observed the black smearing only happened on gallery app and setting menu (if you set it to darken interface)

2. You have black backgrounds enabled.
3. You scroll/drag VERY slowly.
The way to catch it is to
A. Do not lift your finger off the display when dragging the list in settings app. In super slow motion. Drag ever so slowly, like your stretching the writing on the display, and
B. Lock your eye on one same icon and see it fade colour or lose its brightness as you drag it or 'stretch it' with the same poised finger, without lifting from the display.
In other words, it is very difficult and unnatural to produce. But I can confirm it exists. I think it's a non issue for nearly everyone bar a very few people. I cannot reproduce it, for example in this dark themed official XDA app. Because the background is not true black and the text is white.

Lol if i have to go to these lengths to maybe see it then honestly? I don't care.
I think it's testament to this device if we have to look for problems like this.
I get it shouldn't happen, but i really wouldn't have noticed it without being advised.

Question Adaptive refresh rate not working.

There is a FPS counter option in the developer option. After turning it on. The refresh rate doesn't change even in AOD it stays at 120hz. I think this is the problem why our battery is poor. I try factory resetting but still the same. I think the last software update broke it.

u have exynoss or snapdragon?
for me on exynoss / last update AUAC adaptive work good , set on show refresh rate in developer option show between 120hz and 60hz .

I have an exynos s21 ultra. Can send pictures on how it changes. Mine stays 120 all the time.

Try clearing the system cache, a hard reboot, safe mode to rule out 3rd party apks (safe mode may disable adaptive refresh)
Try temporarily turning off Developer options.
Double check all settings, Samsung loves to hid them.
If you have Samsung Device Care clear it's data.

It's off. Can you please upload a screen record of the fps changing so I can show it to the Samsung store that I bought my phone.

Have the same problem sometimes... The adaptive refreshrate needs some fixes... It also stays on 120 or goes down to 60 when looking pictures... It should go as low as 10hz then...

Are you on low brightness ? Is adaptive brightness turned on?

My exynos s21 Ultra does go down to 48hz but never reaches 10hz. Also I'm also spotting when in lowish light, when reading the drop from 120 to 60/48 causes the screen colour to slightly change

That's interesting! I was on the lowest brightness and it says at 120 all the time, if I move the brightness a little higher, the refresh is 60 or 120, more importantly AOD is now 60.
When move back to lowest brightness, stuck again at 120, for AOD as well. Wonder if that has been killing my battery. I thought the refresh should go down to 10?

Sure, without active aod the screen would be completely off. Then the light will not display.
Using the aod consumes much less power than keeping the device awake without the aod. Thats why the app runs on top of the aod.

Did you not read the OP, or even look at it? It's all about how this was ported from Samsung to Pixel because the Pixel also has AOD. All the preview images show AOD.

And then the name is quite literally aodNotify.

Hello @Jawomo I just invited you to a cafe, the application has a failure, when I lock the screen the application blinks for a few hundredths of a second which is annoying, it is like it locks the terminal and the application detects it, it appears and locks again the screen, can you try to fix that bug?

2,5% per hour is normal.
You can use eco effects and interval mode to reduce power consumption even further.
Setting up sleep times over night can also reduce power consumption.
And the app is not fully optimized yet on pixel devices.
What effects did you use? Was interval mode active?

I use the effect, flashing Eco and I did not activate mode interval.
I did the test that night on purpose

Question White dots appearing in long exposure shots on Redmi Note 10 Pro Max (S-30, ISO-6400)

Need help to fix this issue with long exposure shots on my Redmi Note 10 Pro Max. I recently bought the phone and today when I tested long exposure shots it showed white dots in all the pics with same settings, higher the ISO, more clearly the dots were visible.
What can I do to fix this issue?
I attached 2 shots below that I took in complete dark room after cleaning my lens carefully, and for extra precaution I point the camera towards a black surface closely. These are clicked with "Wide" camera in pro mode with Shutter Speed : 30 and ISO : 6400, when I reduce the ISO, they dots fade away a bit. Ultra Wide camera produces similar results.
I even downloaded ProShot app to check if it does any good but, same dots at same place were visible.
These 2 are taken by system camera app, using above given setting (S-30, ISO-6400)

Which ROM and which cam?

That's hot pixels and/or noise. That's pretty much normal on any digital camera, especially on longer exposures and higher ISO. How much they're shown in the final image depends on noise reduction used - the less (less aggressive) noise reduction, the more they will be visible.

Firstly thanks for helping out! And got what you're saying, so just wanted to know in my case, as I am on an android device, what measures can I use to fix this? Any third party app that'll process images with more noise reduction? Or maybe any way to change default settings of system camera app? Can't always switch to post editing to fix this, as it'll be tricky too.

@Sniper God I would start by not shooting 30 second ISO 6400 shots That can be a tall order even for a DSLR, let alone for a phone camera.
GCam ports have noise profile and noise reduction adjustments if you're willing to tinker. I think I saw a hot pixel removal setting there too. Also I've used the mobile Photoshop before for noise reduction. Other than that, I only ever use Snapseed for some light photo editing, but it doesn't have noise reduction (or I don't think it does, at least).
But yeah, as silly as the advice to not shoot shots like that might seem, that's honestly one of the best advices in photography in general - if your camera has some shortcomings, either take advantage of them and use them to improve the shots (which in this case is kinda hard), or work around them so the affect your shots as little as possible.

Other than that, I only ever use Snapseed for some light photo editing, but it doesn't have noise reduction (or I don't think it does, at least).
But yeah, as silly as the advice to not shoot shots like that might seem, that's honestly one of the best advices in photography in general - if your camera has some shortcomings, either take advantage of them and use them to improve the shots (which in this case is kinda hard), or work around them so the affect your shots as little as possible.

Got it, but I've been trying to shoot with nearly same settings using different phones, and none of them reflected any issue like this. I think I should try resetting the phone or otherwise get to the service center as it is under warranty period. It even does this with inbuilt long exposure shot settings that are made to shoot stars and light painting.

It all depends on noise reduction algorithms and settings used. Many phone cameras are pretty aggressive in that regard, so things like these will rarely show up. Though it can also differ literally sensor from sensor, even on a same phone model, to a degree at least.
It is also IMO more likely to show up using settings made for astrophotography, because those are likely to have the noise reduction set pretty low to make sure it doesn't remove too many stars and smudge the sky too much.
I would seriously doubt a factory reset will change anything. But, I mean, you've got little to lose by trying that. And returning the phone is certainly your customer right if you're not satisfied with it.
BTW, out of curiosity, I just tried it on my phone. I got roughly the same amount of hot pixels as you did. Which, frankly, is impressively low for a phone camera as far as I'm concerned I'm pretty sure I'd get the same or more if I shot a 30s ISO 6400 exposure with my DSLR. I don't normally even use ISO 6400, I even try to use ISO 3200 as a last resort.
