Hi everyone, I am a somewhat new Android Developer, I am in the final stages of developing my first Android application targetted at 2.1/2.2 with a MinSDK version of API 5.
I just purchased a Nexus One directly from Google the GSM 3G 900/AWS/2100MHz version that is supposed to work with T-Mobile, but I did not sign a T-Mobile contract.
Here are my my questions,
1.) Is my phone unlocked?
2.) What is the easiest way to get a rooted 2.2 (Froyo/API Level 8) Android OS?
3.) Does ADB work out of the box?
Thanks a ton,
JBDynamics

Wrong section!
Should be Q&A (third in 10 minutes!)
Im from France so I'll skip the first one (but it should be unlocked).
2. rooted API? I don't know what it means, but just install the latest SDK and a 2.2 ROM
3. adb is runing on the phone, just activate "usb debugging" in Settings/Applications
adb is in the android-sdk/tools folder
hope it helped a little
leonnib4, thanks for the info. As long as ADB works, then I should have an elevated shell (super user shell) just by issuing 'adb shell' then I should be able to run commands with su. Thanks! Basically, I need to be able to insert my own kernel modules with insmod which requires super user permission/root access (uid=0).
I really can't wait until I get my Nexus One!

Exacly.
adb is a the "Android DeBugging tool".
It provides you a shell access to to phone in almost any situation (even boot).
But it does not gives you root!
Can you point me in the direction of a rooted 2.2 ROM or the procedure to gain super user access? I was developing BlackBerry applications for a while and just came back to the Android platform a couple weeks ago so I am out of the loop on the latest information about Android. I found the post for the 2.1 ROM and T-Mobile/AT&T instructions, but I think I am getting an Unlocked Nexus One since I ordered directly from Google via my Android Developer account. If nobody has come out with a ROM and recovery image yet, please point me in the direction of the nexus one specific commands needed to build Froyo for the Nexus One (http://source.android.com/ is partially deprecated and not really updated for Nexus One and 2.2 build instructions). So I'm not sure exactly what to do to set myself up for super user access.
Thanks guys!

Okay everybody, first off let me apologize, as I am sure that this is asked quite a bit. However, I am not very savvy with using terminal and such to enable sideloading on my Captivate, and I cannot get any of the methods to work properly.
I started off with the Unleash the Beast root on my phone, then for some reason I thought that froyo was out as an official update, because when I went to check for an update, it would download a package, reboot my phone, then tell me that the update could not be applied. So, thinking that it was due to the root, I had to use Odin to get Unleash the Beast off the phone; however, whatever "update" the phone was attempting to apply still would not work. So I reverted back to root the phone. I have used the One Click Root to program, I have installed BusyBox, and allowed SuperUser access. I am trying to enable sideloading so that I can download the Market Access app, but I am having troubles getting it to work. I have a Mac, and I have used many methods to try and enable it, but no matter what I do it will not work.
Again, I apologize for my ignorance. I have searched all over, and I still can't get this stuff to work. If anybody could provide any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Could you provide a little more information about your phone? Is it stock JF6 with just root? If not provide firmware information and anything else that might be useful
P.S. Questions belong in the Q&A section
I'm not really sure what JF6 is haha...After I used Odin and set it back to stock conditions, the only thing I did was use the One Click Root.
As far as sideloading goes, the One Click De-Cripple method on page 2 of the general forum worked for me. If you want to know what version your phone is, go to the about phone section under your settings menu. If you need or want to upgrade to JH7, which was the last OTA update from ATT, do a search and there are a few options out there for that.
Well unfortunately I cannot use OCD on Mac..I tried to do the command prompts, but the su is asking for a password, which is odd because the way I understand it, it shouldn't be doing that

You did type adb shell first right? Then you should get a "$" where you then type su. It then echoes back su and you should see a "#".
From what you just said, it sounds like you're attempting to get root access on your mac through terminal, which in that case should be your password.

Ok, I got that to work. Now I'm just having trouble entering the code for mac. Like I said, I'm not very savvy with this stuff, so pardon my ignorance, haha.
I'm using the method in the "How to: Remove (Almost) Every Trace of AT&T" thread. (I would post a link, but since I'm a new user, it won't let me)
Is there anything different that I need to put into terminal other than the "./adb"?
I tried to paste the link to this thread but being a new member I am not allowed to post a link because of spam issues. Do a google search for "how to enable non market apps on captivate consolidated" and this will be the first xda thread that comes up.
This thread gives several methods for permanent enabling of sideloading. Being a noob, all of them were a little intimidating to me except for METHOD 3. You don't need a computer and you can do it all on your phone with Root Explorer, SQ Lite, and Terminal Emulator which are all available on the market. The step by step is pretty good and I have done it twice with no issues.

Can someone point me to a link? I would be much appreciated. Thanks Listers!!!
You must of not even attempted to do any real looking. This forum is not that large for the Moto X and there is plenty of information for you to see.
1) you have a sprint phone so you can unlock the Bootloader, install TWRP, get root no matter the Android version
2) there is a clearly titled post in one of the subforums that will tell you how to get root

I did search the web and the forums; I'm sorry. it was a long day, i had just purchased the phone and wanted to make sure i didn't brick it. I have rooted/jailbroken several other devices but wanted to know if the latest ota update would cause a problem for that.
Again, I'm sorry for for the excess forum baggage.
I'll try again.

ownmoto or whatever?? um... ok... I can tell you haven't browsed the different sections for the Moto X here or you would have seen in the "Moto X Original Android Development" section that its called "PwnMyMoto"
Brokenwall gave you a way to root your sprint device, no matter what stock rom you're running... OTA updates or not. Granted unlocking your bootloader voids your warranty... and he didn't give you a 100% newbie step by step guide which it now seems you were really looking for.
Also in the Moto X Original Android Development is a thread titiled... "[Root] RockMyMoto (Yes, even the first OTA)" which is pretty obvious as to what it is for. If you took a few minutes to read it, you'd know it is what you want if you don't want to unlock your bootloader. Its not a very long thead (141 posts currently) so it wont take long to read. The original post contains everything you need, except how to make sure you have Telnet as part of your Windows install (there are posts in that thread later that say what to do to enable/install Telnet as a Windows Feature inside Add/Remove Programs).
Sorry, if I come across as harsh. I know you just want to root without screwing up your phone, and I get that. But I'm afraid if you haven't been able to look around and find this stuff, you'll likely not be able to properly follow and understand the instructions and will therefore stand a good chance of messing up your phone!!!
OK. I am sorry about the post. I know I'm at the mercy of the forum here.
I was up till 2 am getting this phone unlocked, but when I installed wireless tether it said I was not rooted.
Had to install sdk, get a long unlock code, etc.
Evidently I have yet to attain root access, but its not as though I"m not trying.
I have done rooted/jailbroken a couple times before with my htc evo/iphone, and am fairly computer literate, but I just can't hash this out.
I read this thread, but could not quite make out the steps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509590., The video has no sound, which makes it a little more difficult.
I have also read about an OTA on 10/7 or so that patched some of the root methods, so, at the risk of getting put in my place, I'm humbly coming to ask for assistance in helping get my phone rooted.
Again, I'm sorry for being stuck here and having to ask the question. I would greatly appreciate the assistance of someone who can speak to my specific situation.
Thank you and regards to those who can help.

The steps taken in the video are exactly explained in the post.
There are a few assumptions.. 1. Your PC has telnet on it, or you know how to install it. (there is a link further in that thread which Windows users can follow. 2. You have ADB Driver and Platform tools from the AndroidSDK installed correctly on your PC, and Moto drivers installed. Again, there are threads on this already, so you'll have to find/follow them.
You could also try to follow this post -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47067076 however, it uses puttytel.exe instead of Telnet so it will look a little different. It too assumes you've properly installed ADB Driver and Platform Toos from the Android SDK along with the Moto drivers.
Another option is the "Tool Kit" -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477132 which is an "all in one" type tool that should set things up and help you too. I've not used it, but it appears to be a complete package including ADB and the drivers. Only thing would be if you want to use "Flash back to stock" you need to download the ROM file separately.

Right now, there is the rom the phone shipped with. If you have that, you use PwnMyMoto process to root it. The "camera update" that was pushed over the air. If you have that, you use RockMyMoto. And as of yesterday, if you have Verizon X, there is KitKat which can not be rooted (unless your carrier allows you to unlock your phone's boot loader)
I tried the puttytel thread, but I kept getting a timeout like this guy did:
"After running cydia impactor I see a popup for a second that says payload and then it disappears. I then try to run puttytel but it just keeps failing with "network error: connection timed out"." That was the error I kept getting.
The other problem I am currently having is not being able to push files to my device because it doesnt show up as a drive letter. I have usb debugging enabled.
I would about paypal someone for some help at this point. Bummed. I just want my device rooted so I can send my daughter the one I promised here.

Isn't this just for the verizon model?
Guys/Gals/Developers.... I'm really stuck, and would greatly appreciate some help.
I have read thru the threads.
I can't get my phone to be recognized as a drive. Only a camera. Yes, I installed usb mass storage from play store. No luck.
I can't push files to the root of the device.
I have to believe it can be done, I'm just not getting it for some reason.
I'm really sorry, as I have said in multiple posts. Like I said, I would paypal you a reasonable sum if one of the more experienced people out there want to remote in via logmein and help. I know that sounds lame. I'm normally a guy who likes to research it all himself and do this.
I'm normally the guy who helps other people with this stuff, but I just can't hash this out. I've spent the last three days of my free time reading, researching, trying to get the thing to connect as a drive so I can push files to it and run them via adb.. Even went so far as considering buying a wireless adapter to put the files there wirelessly. I'd try now but I'm exhausted. If you can help, please PM me and we can work out something if you are willing. Thanks to those who have suggested methods. I do appreciate your help. I have tried them all except the last kit kat method which I thought was just for Verizon. I'm with sprint. As tired as I am, I'm afraid to brick the thing. I'm very close to asking for a method to restore the phone and take it back. I really wanted wireless tether. I need it for work and to run the ipad on occasion. Sorry this was a long post/thread.
Sorry I'm not as quick as the rest of you. Just want a rooted phone and can't seem to get it done this time on my own.
Any suggestions?

No. That will work for any Moto X Developer Edition or Carrier edition with an unlocked boot loader. So T-Mobile, Sprint, etc.. If you can unlock your boot loader via -> https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth then you can root via this process.

To get your phone to show up in windows as Drive Letter, needs USB Mass Storage mode. Ok, You've installed an app for that, fine... but 1. I'm not aware of that app working, and more importantly, 2. I am not aware of any root method in these forums that requires your phone to show as a "drive letter" to work. So I couldn't even begin to suggest what you are doing wrong.
What instructions are you actually trying to follow? Why not post questions on it in that particular thread, including exact details of what you've done, what you see on your phone, any/all errors or messages, etc.???
And if what you really want to do is tether with sprint, I hope you have checked out threads with suggestions on hacks/ways that work to tether on Sprint Moto X before you worry about rooting.
For example, if you want to remain non-rooted, FoxFi could possibly be an option. As I am a Verizon user and haven't used it, I can't say how well it works for Spint, and I can't say how well it works for Verizon, just that Verizon KK users say it doesn't work, but it did with the JB/4.2.2 roms..
KidJoe;
Thanks for your patience. I'm sorry about all of this. I have tried to be as clear as I can be, but I will redouble my efforts. Let me read clearly that last link and I will post back. I do want root access for all the other cool things it enables too, so I'm determined to get it right. I just want to be careful not to miss something and turn a decent phone into a paperweight.
That link you referenced is exactly what I used to unlock. When I reboot the phone, I get a white screen with a red exclamation point that says bootloader unlocked.
Fox Fi is a no go
Update. Just tried Foxfi. Does not work with current status of unlock but not rooted. I need root, but how does one copy files to the device via usb? I remember there being a setting.
I opened a new thread on this subject. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47740046#post47740046
Hope that's not against the rules. I really thing the failure is related to my inability (or ignorance of how to ) push files to the device.
Good gravy. This has eaten up WAY too much time.
Apparently its a mixed bag over at sprint. Some can some can't.

Hello, all! I've been out of the country since February, and just got back yesterday. Anyways, my G2 was obviously severely outdated, so I downloaded and flashed the debloated Verizon OTA as well as 24a firmware. With that, I lost my previous root (no biggie). Anyways, I downloaded IOroot25, and followed its instructions located here. I have everything set up properly, and I can see my phone in adb devices; however, once the script reboots the phone, the phone just stays off and I get like 10 popups on my screen that I must format drive U in order to use it. At one point, it also failed at installing a USB driver (no idea why when I installed the official Verizon LG drivers).
Does anyone have any advice they could throw my way so I can get back into business with this phone? Also, I re-downloaded the drivers for Verizon he has in that thread, but no .exe file actually starts an installation process - you just click on it and it goes nowhere.
Sorry, I'm not extremely computer savvy anymore, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, everyone.

I used the guide here:
http://www.droidviews.com/root-and-...lg-g2-verizon-att-sprintt-mobile-bell-rogers/
Try the drivers indicated in step 2. If you do get the current loki drivers from Github the name has changed to loki_tool rather than loki_flash. The only difference is you need to type in "loki_tool flash recovery" rather than "loki_flash recovery".

I too just purchased a B1-850 tablet, but I've figured out how to root it. Really quite simple. Just use Kingroot:
1.) Navigate to https://kingroot.net/ from your tablet
2.) Download the APK for android
3.) Install said APK (this requires you to have allowed installation from unkown sources in the "Security" panel of the settings menu)
4.) Load up the app and follow its instructions
5.) Reboot and try it out
For good measure, I would also unlock the "Developer Options" panel and allow USB debugging (adb access) and such; I did this before proceeding. You'll have to search for instructions on that yourself, its well documented.
This all worked for me this morning! Really looking forward to unlocking the potential of this cheapy tablet.
Kingroot worked first try, just swap their super user program with supersu. I am having trouble installing the xposed framework though if anyone has any tips.
I was able to root, now I need to install a custom recovery. CWM says this model is not in the supported list. Has anyone been able to install a recovery? I need NANDROID backup functionality.
I made a thread walking you through how to do it on this tablet in the guides area but just use flash fire for recovery and xposed install
Did the B1-850 hardware updated in anyway? I was able to root it in June 2016, but after a screen repair and factory reset and fresh rom from acer, king root and all others can't work. I'm stuck without any root options. Any idea?

I have this same tablet, and I'm unable to root after flashing to the firmware released on the 24th, and latest firmware (Build #: AV0L0.RV0BRC02.WW.GEN1) as well. Hopefully someone can find a fix, as the few different methods I've attempted simply will not work with the latest firmware from Acer.
On KingRoot Please click submit search if enough people do they will find a root until then just hold tight.

I have done this a bunch, sadly still no love. It's annoying me not being able to root a relatively cheaper tablet, as these tend to get rooted first since they get in more people's hands faster. Oh well, just have to have patience.
Thanks, I was having problems, two different rooters failed and I wondered if it was the recent software update! The image version on my B1-850 is the same as you have quoted! Please post if you find a solution, some apps that need deleting are annoying.

I made a thread walking you through how to do it on this tablet in the guides area but just use flash fire for recovery and xposed install

Which recovery do you install with flash fire; I don't see a link to it in your other thread?
Success!
The latest release of KingRoot is able to root the latest firmware for this tablet. I saw there was a new release of KingRoot back on the 23rd, and it's working as it should. I grabbed the working version here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=21707
hi guys. any idea how to recover b1-850 from bootloop?
I no its a little late but i rooted mine with the kingoroot one click root apk. Ive installed xposed framework and customized like crazy everything from fonts to boot animation. Cant find a custom recovery tho.
I cannot root it with any of the tools I have tried (Kingo ROOT, KingRoot, etc). Anyone know any method that works?
Acer B1-850. Is this device even rootable?
This device has made an idiot of me. If I can be of any assistance finding a root exploit for this device let me know. I will gladly write a detailed procedure of the process. I made the mistake of assuming since it was an entry level, inexpensive device, the path to root would be simple. Three months later none of the common "one-click" programs has found an exploit. I have a copy of stock rom for recovery so testing is not a problem for me. It's a matter of pride at this point. So much so I found one on sale for $60 and bought it just for this purpose. I have followed every link I can find associated with this device to a dead end. Any help will be appreciated.

Same here, still no root for me. Usually these cheapo tablets are not as locked down.
Still waiting!?
I have given up getting assistance from xda on this device. Its as political here as anywhere else. I don't drive a Samsung so nobody wants to help with root. I've heard every excuse from locked bootloader (unlockable in dev options) to what one dev actually told me,"There's little interest in spending energy on an inexpensive device." I understand, but why misrepresent the site by implying all android devices are treated the same? Hell on the Iconia One 8 thread, it says that the B1-850 does not have a MTK SoC, but instead has an Intel Atom chip. Then they send you to another thread where, of course, there is no B1-850 listed! That's because it uses a MTK8163 SoC. In both tablets.
