Is there anyway to enable double tap to wake ?
Nope, touch sensor below the lcd panel has to support it on a hardware level. But then again, why? Double tap to wake is among the most overhyped functions drains battery and wakes your phone up in yer pocket, you have the power button and or fingerprint reader to tap and don't even have to tap two times . On the other hand I'd trade the ir blaster to an nfc, ir blaster makes the phone look/sound a bit childish imho.

Are you sure? on Mi 6X (same hardware) DT2W is possible on stock firmware, and also on Mi A1 on stock kernel is not possible but it is on custom kernel.
BTW, I hope would be possible in the future.

What are you trying to say? I said it depends a lot on the hardware if its power hungry or not and that on LC based displays it usually is more power hungry than on AMOLEDs for example.
It doesn't depend on whether its LCD or AMOLED because the screen remains off in both cases. And no, it doesn't drain power(very minuscule, almost negligible drain). I have used it on almost all my phones and I love it, strange why Xiaomi wouldn't provide such basic functionality.

What you mean by screen is the touch panel, and yes that has to be active for d2tw, but screen and touch panel are different layers. So screen remains turned off which saves you from the battery drain and touch panel consumes very less power in terms of how we use our phones.

Just beacause you don't know how to appreciate it's usefulness doesn't mean it's useless. And how is ir blaster childish? Never seen a tv remote control? Fan remote control? Aircon remote control? Would love to see both double tap to wake and nfc on the phone.
Chillax dood, long life is rare, the tv and ac should have their own remote imho. It's not a phone's job to control those. If you check the models that usually include the ir blaster you'll see the childish part. And when you're on a budget (as a phone manufacturer) nfc should have priority over the ir blaster. But yeah that's just me.

I mean Xaiomi do not offer the feature on battery life concerns, even cheap ugly phones as Asus zenfone 2 has this feature, which besides being power hungry because phones in pocket tends to wake up spontaneously with body movement, using the fingerprint sensor for this is more clever, enforcing it is a wise decision from Xiaomi

It's not a big hit on battery life. Its similar to the always-listening feature used by google where you say "ok google" to turn the device on. It doesn't need the entire chip to be running. I don't know the exact hardware details. Pocket wake-ups are blocked by the proximity sensor.

So, I was paging through the settings on the X at a store and noticed something I haven't yet seen mentioned - the ability for the device to remain on so long as the user continued to look at the screen. Additionally, you could have the screen shut off and lock more quickly than normal if the user looked away from the device. How is this working for you all?

it actually works. like I looked away, and when I looked back, my screen turned dim (about to turn off) but it saw I was looking at it and undimmed itself. pretty cool to me
Yes, works pretty fine for me too [emoji4]
I read about this, I believe it's referred to as "Attentive Display". If i'm not wrong it uses the IR sensors as opposed to the front camera like some other manufacturers. Great to know it works!
If yuo use the training guide, you see the funcion.
It seems to use the front camera to see your face.
It works good in many condition, not during night.
Is this feature on by default? It would seem that using the camera at all times would spend a bit of energy.
I believe it uses the IR sensors rather than the camera. Reason being that I've compared my battery life with the feature turned on and off, and there's no difference to speak of. Having the camera on to track your face would consume a fair amount of battery and would've shown up in Settings>Battery as well.

tbh, its pretty hit and miss most of the time. Even the Moto demo requires your head to be at a particular position vis a vis the screen for it to show up as a detect. I'd still maintain its the sensors, but I could very well be incorrect.
Are there any ROMs or kernels that support double tap to wake?
I know there is a button on the front of the phone, but after using it dt2w for so long it's a natural feeling now. Plus it saves on the hardware buttons.

I know exactly how you feel. I had an m8 prior to my Note 4 and an LG G2 before that and tapping the screen to turn it on or off is so deeply ingrained in me that not having tap to wake is still super weird almost two months down the line. The loss is felt constantly. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, no one has baked the feature into one of their kernels yet. I've seen one or two other posts asking about this and both times the bulk of the replies were of the opinion that since we have the hardware button tap2wake is a useless feature, which I couldn't disagree with more. The lack of interest makes me fear we won't be gaining the ability back anytime soon, but I really hope I'm wrong. I love my N4, but I love it substantially less than I otherwise would if I could tap on and off, however silly that sounds.
Anyone here thought about returning your 6T for a 6? I've been really considering this because I feel I'm losing more hardware with the 6T.
1. Iffy fingerprint sensor over a perfect one
2. No more led notification.
3. No more headphone jack
To me the only real gain is the battery. The whole notch/screen thing is not a big deal.

I love the headphone jack, but I traded in my OnePlus One, so I'll just make do. I didn't even realize I was losing the LED notification, but I personally don't care too much because sometimes waiting for a pulse on the phone is the same as waking your phone anyways.
From what I've seen, the fingerprint is definitely slower, but on the case of it being iffy, I think that depends on the setup. I personally prefer a fingerprint sensor on the front.

I hated losing the ability to just press the fingerprint sensor as well. You can turn on tap-to-wake so you just gotta tap the screen a couple times to get in (tap to wake -> tap for fingerprint sensor), instead of picking it up and pressing a button first.
Nah, it's just a matter of personal preference.

1. I hated having fingerprint sensor on the back always looking/searching when I need to log in to diverse apps. Only time I miss it is when I pull my phone out of pocket and used to touch back sensor to turn the phone on. But I double tap it now.
2. Yes, no led notifications was disappointing but most other phones are losing it. However, app called pixel pulse solved the problem, and it's actually now better then notification LED.
3. I rarely used headphone jack. Why would you want to have cord dangling around? Isn't it annoying? I stopped using corded headphones long time ago and have Bluetooth earbuds everywhere if needed.
4. Smaller notch allows for more notifications.
5. Better sounding speaker.
6. Base option comes with128GB space.
7. Larger capacity battery.
I certainly dislike where phone industry is going. Removing essentials like notification LED, headphone jack, larger narrower screens? But it's what nearly everyone is making these days. It would be nice if OnePlus does something like Google and has 2 versions, one smaller 5.5 inch 16:9 screen, and this one 6.4+with same specifications (except battery).

There's no burn in. While earlier OLED models had some issues regarding burn in, now the majority of flagships and even midrange devices have OLED panels and no burn in occurs.
There isn't too much protection needed to be fair. Even after years of usage you will not encounter any burn in. You mostly see burn in on panels that display the same thing for a very long time, meaning the pixels don't shut down or display other colors (e.g. TVs that run the same channel for a very long time).
There is protection on the Always on display. You'll notice the clock and notifications switch from one place to another every few minutes to avoid displaying the same pixels.
Burn in should be the least of your worries.

Don't worry about burnin unless you do something silly like increasing the display sleep time to half an hour or always keeping it in an unlock state. Use dark mode, 2 min timeout max, will be fine.
For every phone I've owned with an LCD/OLED display, I've experienced none. Yet when I use other people's phones of the same model, they have burn-in.
[Edit]
The only difference between me and others is that I always dim the screen. Never use on high brightness, unless in the sun.

That may be true. Although we still don't know how much power the motion sense sensor uses. The motion sense senor is basically radar. It's sending out radio waves and detecting what comes back. That takes power too. It's possible that the motion sense sensor always running will use just as much battery than AOD does. It could even use MORE battery than AOD.

I go through a lot of phones and all had problems, some of them never got fixed. I'm doubtful this phone will be any different than every phone before it in that regard. AOD uses power, no lie, I like it so I leave it on. Turning it off is no answer, I get that. What I don't get is turning off all the cool features a phone has to save batt when charging is everywhere, it's quick, and portable supplies are cheap, work well, and will get you through a pinch. This phone will likely have 4 or more hours without skimping on anything. To me the win is playing with the toys I bought, not gimping them to save battery life which can be easily and well covered.
This isn't a call out BTW, I just don't understand the thought process.
having an LED notification light is better than not having one. There's plenty of room. The Pixel 4 has a lower screen to body ratio than the S8. And while the S8 has an annoying curved screen, it has an LED notification light. It can coexist with an AOD. You can turn one off and use the other. Just like the headphone jack argument IMO. And the LED notification light is just so useful. It's a shame that app that lets you customise it got neutered by Google's updates to Android.
Oh and it sucks that there isn't an SD card either. It makes sense to companies as they can push paid cloud storage but not to customers.

Doesn't make sense to add as card support, as this still is a hack - as has been on Linux based systems for years - and thus a security risk. It actually doesn't make any sense to add a hack to my system. Just my 2 cents.

Well that's good news. That stand by time is better than I thought it would be with the radar sensor but still not what I got from my Pixel 2 XL when it was new. I dropped about 2-3% over 8 hours. Even now after 2 years I still only see about 4% over 8 hours.
