Hey guys, first time poster here.
Got my P20 pro about 5 days ago and one major thing I'm noticing is I can't look at the phone for too long because it really starts to hurt my eyes
I was wondering it might be tied to the refresh rate. Does anyone know what it is for the phone?
Logging into youtube to watch a video at 1080p does not state '60fps' on this phone, but does on others.
Does this phone have a sub-60hz display?

I get the option on my P20 pro for 1080p 60fps
1080p 60fps
Mine does say 1080p 60fps, the refresh rate on this phone is 60hz, thats weird. did you updated your phone, if not what firmware version you have. i never experienced something similar.

I loaded up that exact video and I don't get the option to watch in 1080p 60fps
And the model is CLT-L29 running 8.1.0.130 (C636)

Yep it's on the latest version
Which version is your firmware?
App version is 13.32.52
No, i mean your android Firmware, Mine is 8.1.0.131 , Go to Settings>System>About phone > Build number.
Yeah I mentioned above, 130 firmware
It's not the refresh rate of the screen. It's probably because you have such a wallpaper that in the lowest brightness setting emits an uncomfortable blue light radiation. The refresh of the screen is just fine. As for YouTube, it supports 60fps if the source video provides it. I've noticed the same thing in the watercolour theme when the brightness settings where in the lowest point inside a very dark room. Apart from that situation, my screen is super confi in every light situations. (and when i changed me theme for a darker one, even that problem was solved)

Ahh I see. What a weird behaviour.
It's worth noting though that it's uncomfortable to look at on all brightness levels and with the use of eye comfort mode.
I'm starting to think it's just my eyes.
But on my many other devices I don't get the same problem
If your internet is kinda slow, youtube could remove the 60fps option for you.v
For me, I only noticed the irritating wave length emission only at the lowest brightness setting in watercolour wallpaper. It may have something to do with the specific colour and the lowest possible brightness setting. I must note, that it has a very low brightness setting as a phone. That's a good thing at night. My oneplus didn't go as dark as p20.

Ever since I got my phone it was able to playback 60fps YouTube videos. My firmware is currently (.130) Keep in mind it was still able to playback 60fps videos with older firmware.
You can always try going to www.testufo.com and see what refresh rate is this playing in the test.
With my Razer it shows as 120Hz but you should see 60Hz showing up.
With my Asus tablet P01MA it shows up as 30Hz.
Of course it's 60hz

This exact same thing happened to me with my Mate 10 Pro. It really hurts my eyes in such a bad way that I have blurry vision after looking at it, and some weird head aches. There is something wrong with these phones. I just ordered the Mate 20 pro but I think I will send it back. This needs more investigation.

I'm getting some seriously nasty bars during slow motion recording (I attached a screen shot which isn't as bad but when it's a video the bars move all around and are very distracting) Anyone seeing the same thing or am I looking at a defective phone? I already swapped out phones yesterday due to a stuck pixel, but best buy has been very easy about it thus far. Just wanting to see if this is hardware or software, thanks!
Yep, exactly the same here. Gets worse the more the sensor gain ramps up.

Checked the sprint store demo and a best buy demo, All the same. Must be a low light issue. Oh well, Guess most of the time the feature will be used in the daylight (although this may be a bad thing when trying to slow mo some epic beer pong matches)

Figures, seems like it would be a hardware issue, but maybe there will be some magic firmware update that will help.
Most serious hd cameras require a lot of light, so this should be no surprise when recording show motion videos. Just be sure to have adequate lighting in the future

I haven't looked closely at the example yet otherwise I would have put my 2 cents in earlier.
I work a lot with cameras and know them very well. One thing to keep in mind is cmos sensors don't expose every pixel at the same time. This causes what is known as the jello effect when you move quickly left and right. This can also cause what is known as rolling shutter. I believe this is caused by the shutter speed in combination with the way cmos sensors work. When I get back from this weekend trip, I'll see what is going on.
At work I have a professional Sony video camera with a backlit cmos sensor. If I drop the shutter speed down too low to help when it's too dark, especially around fluorescent lights, I get brown bars rolling across the image. It's just a physical limitation of the sensor no matter the camera. Some hide it better than others. I hope this helps clear this up.

This is nothing like traditional noise caused by high sensor gain in low light. We're talking dense horizontal lines only in slow motion recording, which I'm guessing is 120fps? 60 fps mode works fine. I've seen examples of slow motion video recorded by the euro version in low light that didn't have this problem.

That doesn't eliminate it as a cause. The example you saw could have been in better lighting conditions than you thought, or the euro edition might have had older firmware that didn't let the ISO go as high (thus, the whole image would appear much darker, but less noise).
120fps slow motion means the camera has to use at least 120th of a second for a shutter speed. This is relatively fast for a smartphone camera, so it has to bump up the ISO to compensate. If the light is especially low, it will have to move all the way to the upper bounds of its ISO capability to get a usable image. Meanwhile, a 60fps video will have MUCH more time (2x is a lot of time) to grab light, and so it doesn't need to force the ISO so high.
It's extremely unlikely that a firmware update will solve this issue. All they could do is just force the camera not to use that high ISO setting, resulting in slow motion videos that are too dark instead of too noisy.
(Also, BTW, this has nothing to do with the jello effect)
How do you do slow motion video recording? When I have the video camera on, there aren't any menu options available.

I'm getting a stuck blue pixel when taking photos in low light... is anyone else experiencing this? The blue pixel is showing up in the actual photo taken, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the sensor.
Daylight photos aren't exhibiting this behavior.
Ok maybe a little dramatic but still - a little disappointing.
I have done a few tests. Played the exact same HDR YouTube videos at the exact same time with my Mate 9 and Mate 10 one above the other in landscape mode. The Mate 9 is MUCH brighter than the Mate 10 on maximum brightness. I have factored turning off auto brightness and turned off Smart resolution etc etc. They also have different colour temperatures even if you set them both to warm, default or cold - they still look different.
I have tried HDR videos on both phones and I see absolutely no difference. I studied the colours so hard. I see absolutely no difference between a 1440p video and a 1080p video playing at the same time. In fact, most times the Mate 9 looks sharper and more vibrant. Also shockingly the Mate 9 offered for example 1080p 60fps option on a video whereas the Mate 10 offered maximum 720p 60fps on the same video. 1080p was nowhere in the list. What the hec! Battery at 100% so no resolution switching to save power.
Basically, it is true 1440p is wasted on a phone. There is no difference on a small screen such as a phone. All these people saying "yeah but X phone only has a 1080p screen" don't realise that it doesn't really matter. It all looks the same.
So I hear the Mate 10 is HDR 10 compatible and yet I don't see it with my eyes. If I am doing something wrong and someone wants to correct me, please DO. I want to be wrong.
What are your tests and opinions?
Despite all this, I still love the phone. ?
I take it all back.
I have discovered YouTube does not show HDR10 output even if the video says so.
ONLY the built in video player supports true HDR10 content.
I downloaded these HDR sample videos from an XDA post:
https://mega.nz/#F!jYwlgbBA!piXwD8sYa7zjsRtjStuAyw
Play them in the default video player and they look stunning. I took a screenshot of a paused video and when opened up in gallery, the colours were bland compared to the actual playing footage. Proof enough.
Phew! This phone is amazing!
Do you get higher peak brightness when in vivid mode ?
AFAIK - Currently Netflix is the only third party app supporting HDR 10 for this phone
Youtube coming soon though,
So, you might want to change your thread title, LoL

Of course it's the same because mate 10 comes preset to 1080p lol. And stop listening to tech reviewers the are dumb, only way to see it 1080p and 2k is to use magnifying object like camera or glass etc. I have iPhone 7 plus, LG G6, Moto Z play, Essential phone and the s8 which I sold because of burn in, I don't see the dots pixel on any off them because I don't look for it, they all looks the same some are brighter and vibrant than others. That's it.
Another thing, the max brightness on auto is superior than the manual max brightness. That happen on a bunch of smartphones.
So, it's dumb to compare max brightness with the auto setting turned off.
The best way to compare it, is going outdoor with the auto checked on both and look which one seems brighter.

Last night I tried some more test together with my OP6 and sadly I can confirm it! You can see in the attached files, the upper phone is the Note 9 while the lower one is the OP6. Both phone are on 50% screen brightness. The Note 9 has even the Video Enhancement enabled and I tried all the screen settings (adaptive, cinema amoled, pitcure amoled and basic) without any positive result. I took these pictures with my iPhone X and I can tell you for sure that the problem is even more evident in person!

Yes, unfortunately, I am experiencing the black crush problem on my Verizon variant. I also experienced this problem with my previous T-Mobile Note 9. The screen calibration app from the Play Store does help, but for a phone this pricey, this software quality control problem is unacceptable.

I don’t remember the episode number. It should be one at the end of the season. Anyway, you can see it by yourself that is dark. With such a problem when you look in a dark part of a scene (for instance someone's hair) you just see a black mess with no details in it. [emoji20]

not exactly what i said either.
does removing auto brightness and adjusting it a bit more help?
because it just seems that's the issue.
edit:
i did tests with the note 9, note 8, and note 3
while there are slight differences between each device nothing like the pictures you posted.
all screens had auto brightness at off and brightness at 50 percent which was more than enough.
lets not forget 50% on a samsung and 50% in another brand might not have the same intensity/range.
and something obvious but i feel i must add in this case is that samsung phones when video is paused will auto dimm the screen a couple seconds after playback is halted.
in order to do your tests i figure you also paused playback. i just hope you didn't take pictures of when it was dimmed... because lol well that would be dimwitted.
when i compare one phone dimmed and one not dimmed i get the exact same results as your pictures. a brief touch of the screen restores normal brightness.
I have a little black crush on mine. But some people forget we are watching stuff on a mobile device that is packaged for small screens. The video is compressed and sometimes even the data.
I made sure to watch some high quality content, not just 1080p or 4k. Dim and well lit content. Also, a wide variety of YouTube videos. I experienced some black crush and many times brightening the luxury of the screen helped. To conserve battery some content I don't need to see all the details. Other times I knew it was compression compressing all the colors and shades out it.
The best way to test for black crush are contrasty pictures. I see many of the complaints about videos but sometimes it can't be helped as I'll watch the same content (same exact file for scientific reasons) on my JS9500 which is semi calibrated and Bam! there it is still. I've tested some with the camera and sometimes I will have slight black crush in darker pictures but it would be a challenging picture anyways. Sometimes black crush is non contrasty dark content and/or compression and codecs.

You can see what you want to see. I don't care.
If you want to believe that I took pictures of two phones letting one dim itself just to waste my time here writing this post...well do it.
I owned all Samsung phones since the first galaxy...let alone the many other phones I owned...S9 plus and Note 9 have such an issue. I read that S9 was updated back in may to solve it (although some say it's not solved at all). I don't feel like waiting 3 months to see maybe this problem solved. I paid a lot of money for note 9 and as I did for S9+ I decided to return it for this reason. Nor I feel like crancking all the way up brightness just to be able to see some details in dark areas nor even up to 60 nor 70% (thus you feel better?!?) when my other phones don't have such an issue (nor even my s8+ and note8).
Maybe for someone else this is not a problem, especially if they don't use the phone to watch movies or series on Netflix or other streaming services. I do. And I don't waste a thousand euros for something that won't let me see a decent image quality.

Oh well....my others mobile devices packed for small screen don't have such an issue. And I can watch whatever I want...but one has it and the other one doesn't.
There cannot be compression when we are talking about the same video on two different phones one showing the issue while the other one don't. I mean I even posted pictures showing the issue. And believe me when I tell you that they don't make justice to the real difference between the two devices....it was really worst in person. I don't need to be convinced of the contrary thanks.
Maybe the most clever way to answer could be "sorry pal, you got a lemon". I cannot exclude it (although after owning S9+ with the same issue I'm a bit suspicious about it). But no settings nor codec nor compression.

that brightness slider must be really heavy. wonder which is more difficult:
- moan about it and return the device
or
- move it 1/4 of an inch to the right. (that's 6.4 millimeters to you)
so can you take a picture of the same scenario as before but with a bit more brightness? its for science
now take an other picture of both phones maxed out. its for the win
I have been watching hdr video in YouTube and my note 9 has been flickering between normal brightness and the the boosted brightness that usually occurs when you watch hdr video. My note 9 is the Verizon model on the most recent firmware as of 8/27/18. Does anyone else have this problem?
Seems to be an issue with Auto brightness.
Manually set max brightness and disable auto and the flickering stopped for me.
Looks like a minor bug in either the youtube app or the internal HDR handling.
Doesnt always do it to me though, i've switched to Youtube Vanced as my main youtube and i havent seen it do it.

I don't get any flickering either unless using auto brightness in a dark room.

Ah okay. I don't use auto brightness. When the HDR video starts, my screen brightness jumps up because I keep it at 50% but the video plays without flicker in both dark and light areas.

Exactly, well said. It's the nature of beast. I normally don't watch videos so when I did last night in a dim lit room I was like a little shocked , but came to learn it's normal.

I have AT&T and get random flickering when I am on YouTube.
I get this too!!! Was panicking when it happened as I've had a nightmare with my last 2 notes now, including the note 7 and i just couldn't believe my luck!! I was thinking it was faulty hardware and I'd have to exchange it which i really don't want to do as I've just got the thing after such a long and convoluted story with my phone's over the last 1 2 years...
Is this problem resolve then guys or what!?!? The last reply guy in this thread is talking absolute bollocks..... This is NOT normal or "the nature of the ****ing beast" is completely wrong and ****ed up..... Needs fixing!!! (By the way, don't take it personally last guy comment, just frustrated and talking about hardware on a phone, nothing personal)
Same here, the screen is flickering when watching HDR videos in the dark. Auto brightness on/off doesn't change anything, still flickers. In daylight no problem.
yeap, noticed it too watching a video in a very dark room when I got my Note 9 on the 6th of September. i sent them feedback via the Samsung members app but they just sent some generic response back. Seems to go away when the light sensor is covered with a finger.
Yes, here too, but only in a dark room.

Alright,ok... SMH.
Download the video in question and play it with the Samsung video app or MX player and see if it flickers or not.
Also there are many posts about about this not unique to just Samsung or the note 9, Google " hdr video flickering" , good luck .

So... As always online, you never get the answer you're looking for...
You don't actually say what you mean... So, are you saying the problem is a YouTube app problem/bug? Or what...... What is it
Are you guys using a screen protector as some seem to interfere with the auto brightness I had the same problem on my so plus and on the xperia xz premium I took the screen protectors off and it seemed to stop
It has to be the YouTube app as I've been watching 4k HDR 60fps using chrome desktop mode and no signs of flickering
No Issues on My AT&T Note9 at all just tried 6 different HDR and works perfectly!

So I've been watching a few videos on our Redmi K20 Pro(India) and I've realised that the video appears to be pixelated when it has darker scenes! Apparently, this issue is known as 'Black Crush' and now I can't unsee it especially when playing movies which are generally dark! Movies are unwatchable since all the darker color are crushed to black. Is there any fix for this? S9/S9+ used to suffer from similar issue and it was fixed by a software update! Will Xiaomi issue a fix if enough number of people have this issue?
More details about the issue: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/galaxy-s9-black-crush-display-issue,news-26969.html?

I don't see it, I've used 4k quality on that video, it auto pics 360p and there's clear pixels but as soon as I pumped it upto 1080, 1440p and 4k I did not see any pixelation

I'm not talking about pixelation due to lower resolution! If you look carefully at the darker areas of the video you can see blocks/pixels as if all the darker areas have been mixed/crushed together! You are lucky if you don't see it! Once you see it you can't unsee it just like the black bleeding issue of amoled. ?
BTW what is your ROM version?
PS: Lower your brightness to see black crush in all its glory.
Do u using refresh rate mod?

No crushing here, MiUI 11,IN.
I remember it was horrible on older Xiaomi Mi Note 2 but not present here
Is there a chance you've got a different panel than most?

I'm also using MiUi-11 IN! It is very obvious on my screen especially at lower brightness. I generally watch videos at night and have to keep my brightness at low! You don't have this issue even at lower brightness? BTW how to check what panel my phone has?

I did. I will record for you tomorrow from another phone.

Hey, thanks for the response! No need for video! I just wanted to make sure if it was ok or not! I guess I'll take mine to the service center in that case.

Same issue
Hey, I'm facing the black crush issue in my redmi k20 pro with miui 12. It looks very worse. So, Xiaomi is using different panels for the same mobile model. Can it be fixed through the software updates.
Black crush in videos is NOT an hardware problem but rather a problem in colorspace of the video you are watching (virtually every streaming app suffers from this due to the compression they put the videos through)
