Black Crush? - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

So I've been watching a few videos on our Redmi K20 Pro(India) and I've realised that the video appears to be pixelated when it has darker scenes! Apparently, this issue is known as 'Black Crush' and now I can't unsee it especially when playing movies which are generally dark! Movies are unwatchable since all the darker color are crushed to black. Is there any fix for this? S9/S9+ used to suffer from similar issue and it was fixed by a software update! Will Xiaomi issue a fix if enough number of people have this issue?
More details about the issue: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/galaxy-s9-black-crush-display-issue,news-26969.html?

I don't see it, I've used 4k quality on that video, it auto pics 360p and there's clear pixels but as soon as I pumped it upto 1080, 1440p and 4k I did not see any pixelation

I'm not talking about pixelation due to lower resolution! If you look carefully at the darker areas of the video you can see blocks/pixels as if all the darker areas have been mixed/crushed together! You are lucky if you don't see it! Once you see it you can't unsee it just like the black bleeding issue of amoled. ?
BTW what is your ROM version?
PS: Lower your brightness to see black crush in all its glory.

No crushing here, MiUI 11,IN.

I'm also using MiUi-11 IN! It is very obvious on my screen especially at lower brightness. I generally watch videos at night and have to keep my brightness at low! You don't have this issue even at lower brightness? BTW how to check what panel my phone has?

Same issue
Hey, I'm facing the black crush issue in my redmi k20 pro with miui 12. It looks very worse. So, Xiaomi is using different panels for the same mobile model. Can it be fixed through the software updates.

Black crush in videos is NOT an hardware problem but rather a problem in colorspace of the video you are watching (virtually every streaming app suffers from this due to the compression they put the videos through)

Huawei P20 pro Secondary rate amoled screen??!!

https://youtu.be/XIMLoLxmTDw
Hello everyone.. I'm sorry for bad English but try to understand it's important..
I think that Huawei cheated us with p20 pro..
We paid 890 euros for one of the best mobiles in the market and Huawei used second rate display of amoled.. And please tell me did you paid 890 euros for second rate display? I don't think so..
So follow the instructions and you will see what I mean.
Go on a completely dark room, without light at all..
Use brightness 100%
Click the video and turn your phone to watch it on full screen..
W8 for the a little bit and you will see white colours coming out from your screen and tell me..
Is that normal for amoled panel?
No its not.. Black should be completely black...
I took my phone to Huawei fix center and they refuse to see.. They don't recognize it as problem and they refuse to give me my money back..
What do you say?? Check the same with s9 and s9+.
P20 pro user.
no such problem on my device.

I can see what you mean. I can see it even on low brightness. I have never done this test before, so cannot comment on other oleds I've owned.
Could it be compression? I say this because after seeing the effect in this video. I tested others, and i found that the severity of the effect is lesser. Also the uniformity changed between videos, whilst staying consistant to each.
Your video was much more pronounced than some others, this makes believe that there is something else in the works.
I know when i use a pure black wallpaper, the screen is perfect black. Also im pretty sure the AOD has pure blacks too

Screen refresh rate

Hey guys, first time poster here.
Got my P20 pro about 5 days ago and one major thing I'm noticing is I can't look at the phone for too long because it really starts to hurt my eyes
I was wondering it might be tied to the refresh rate. Does anyone know what it is for the phone?
Logging into youtube to watch a video at 1080p does not state '60fps' on this phone, but does on others.
Does this phone have a sub-60hz display?

Yeah I mentioned above, 130 firmware
It's not the refresh rate of the screen. It's probably because you have such a wallpaper that in the lowest brightness setting emits an uncomfortable blue light radiation. The refresh of the screen is just fine. As for YouTube, it supports 60fps if the source video provides it. I've noticed the same thing in the watercolour theme when the brightness settings where in the lowest point inside a very dark room. Apart from that situation, my screen is super confi in every light situations. (and when i changed me theme for a darker one, even that problem was solved)

Ahh I see. What a weird behaviour.
It's worth noting though that it's uncomfortable to look at on all brightness levels and with the use of eye comfort mode.
I'm starting to think it's just my eyes.
But on my many other devices I don't get the same problem
If your internet is kinda slow, youtube could remove the 60fps option for you.v
For me, I only noticed the irritating wave length emission only at the lowest brightness setting in watercolour wallpaper. It may have something to do with the specific colour and the lowest possible brightness setting. I must note, that it has a very low brightness setting as a phone. That's a good thing at night. My oneplus didn't go as dark as p20.

Ever since I got my phone it was able to playback 60fps YouTube videos. My firmware is currently (.130) Keep in mind it was still able to playback 60fps videos with older firmware.
You can always try going to www.testufo.com and see what refresh rate is this playing in the test.
With my Razer it shows as 120Hz but you should see 60Hz showing up.
With my Asus tablet P01MA it shows up as 30Hz.
Of course it's 60hz

This exact same thing happened to me with my Mate 10 Pro. It really hurts my eyes in such a bad way that I have blurry vision after looking at it, and some weird head aches. There is something wrong with these phones. I just ordered the Mate 20 pro but I think I will send it back. This needs more investigation.

hdr video in youtube flickering

I have been watching hdr video in YouTube and my note 9 has been flickering between normal brightness and the the boosted brightness that usually occurs when you watch hdr video. My note 9 is the Verizon model on the most recent firmware as of 8/27/18. Does anyone else have this problem?
Seems to be an issue with Auto brightness.
Manually set max brightness and disable auto and the flickering stopped for me.
Looks like a minor bug in either the youtube app or the internal HDR handling.
Doesnt always do it to me though, i've switched to Youtube Vanced as my main youtube and i havent seen it do it.

Same here. I was watching that Peru video in 60fps on YouTube in a low lit room and the brightness would go up and down, made me sick. I turned off auto brightness and it helped a little . Also if I put my phone down flat it stops flickering.

I get this too!!! Was panicking when it happened as I've had a nightmare with my last 2 notes now, including the note 7 and i just couldn't believe my luck!! I was thinking it was faulty hardware and I'd have to exchange it which i really don't want to do as I've just got the thing after such a long and convoluted story with my phone's over the last 1 2 years...
Is this problem resolve then guys or what!?!? The last reply guy in this thread is talking absolute bollocks..... This is NOT normal or "the nature of the ****ing beast" is completely wrong and ****ed up..... Needs fixing!!! (By the way, don't take it personally last guy comment, just frustrated and talking about hardware on a phone, nothing personal)
Same here, the screen is flickering when watching HDR videos in the dark. Auto brightness on/off doesn't change anything, still flickers. In daylight no problem.
yeap, noticed it too watching a video in a very dark room when I got my Note 9 on the 6th of September. i sent them feedback via the Samsung members app but they just sent some generic response back. Seems to go away when the light sensor is covered with a finger.
Yes, here too, but only in a dark room.

So... As always online, you never get the answer you're looking for...
You don't actually say what you mean... So, are you saying the problem is a YouTube app problem/bug? Or what...... What is it
Are you guys using a screen protector as some seem to interfere with the auto brightness I had the same problem on my so plus and on the xperia xz premium I took the screen protectors off and it seemed to stop
It has to be the YouTube app as I've been watching 4k HDR 60fps using chrome desktop mode and no signs of flickering

Pixel 4XL screen hue

Is it just me or the pixel 4XL screen has a bit of greenish-yellowish tint to it with Ambient EQ off? I'm kind of nit-picky so it's been bugging me lately.
It's a consequence of having 90hz at a lower brightness. Unless it's like that even at a higher brightness level?
Yup. I don't know why it's the 90hz cause never had this problem with my 7 pro.
I do find it is calibrated to green even in normal conditions

I've seen 7t but when you look a lot them are not the same and they look more like hardware issues.
I've had the 7 pro since launch and have had the community app, XDA and Reddit which I look at regularly and I've never come across a thread about a green tint because of 90hz
At 100% brightness it looks fine, But if I dim it to 75% or lower, there's a little bit of green tint when you look at it on a white background.

Can you disable 90hz on the oneplus devices? If you can then maybe it just never occurred to them to try to disable 90hz and see if the issue still persists. It certainly didn't dawn on me until I saw someone else having the issue and they reported disabling 90hz solved the problem.

I tried disabling 90Hz. It does not correct the issue of the green hue. It is not as bad, but it is still there. What disabling 90Hz eliminates (mostly) is the red-shift that occasionally occurs.
It's doing my head in now. My screen has a green hue, really bad on Grey's, worse the dimmer it is. I can turn my screen off and on and instead of a green hue it's purple and super contrasty instead. Going to try a replacement but I'm not expecting it to be much difference as seeing same problems from other users.
The black crush in lower brightness seems to be worse than the op 7 pro too

Don't waste your time with a replacement i did and it's the same, Google have calibrated it like this deliberately do a search on Google. Will wait for the 5 unless they've sold even less pixels this year than last year in which case we may not a see a pixel again while that current development team is in place.

Hi guys I have a pixel 4 whose display shows some green spots while displaying blacks. Do you think it's burn in or it rather be the green tint that everybody talks about? Thank you very much, I don't know if I have to do a replacement or not ?

Looks like you have some stuck pixels there in this case the green sub pixel is stuck. Could try to run a stuck pixel fixer and let it run for awhile. But honestly ,it looks like you have so many that a miracle would be required. I would just contact support and have them RMA.

Question Human Face Picture bit darker than normal

I bought redmi note 10 pro max somedays ago. Normal shots of this phone is fine. But when I click photos of human face it is bit darker than normal. My other phones picture is more natural and real. But this one is bit darker and it can be really annoying sometimes. Attached some picture sample here. 1st picture is from Note 10 pro max and 2nd one is from Redmi 4x I am on miui 12.5.2 by the way. Is this a software or hardware issue I am confused. Please help!

Forget if it's darker or brighter. Actual thing you have to look for is which one has natural colors (without enhancing colors artificially) because some phones/OEMs put artificial algorithms to make the picture look more brighter and put excessive brightness than what it actually has naturally.
Some people like natural colors and some like enhanced (artificial) colors/photos.
Cheers!
i can confirm the same... human face photos are too much saturated+yellowish+darker (with both stock miui and ANX )... compared with my redmi note 5 pro+mi 10i. (rn5 pro is pretty much natural WOW) .. and when adding 2x zoom to rear cam photos, it takes a bit much annoying time to process and clearly display the photo..
it's software. check Gcam then compare

I have both redmi note 10 pro and Pro max. In both phones, human faces look darker in pics as well as 1080p videos (720p vids are bit grainy and just same as other phones). The problem persists in all conditions, let it be well lit indoor or outdoor, for group photos etc. Such problems were not there in my other redmi/realme/honor phones. Indoor Pics are not all presentable whatever the setting may be. And if you zoom in to human face, they kind of messy. Grainy would have been fine. Not sure if it can be improved.
This is because different mobile phones have different shooting configurations. This problem can be solved by adjusting some functions, etc.
Facing the same situation from day one of the use of Redmi note 10 pro max.
All pictures where human is involved are darker than actual skin color tone.
Not sure how to fix that. I use some filters provided by redmi to balance out the color tone, but that is something that you don't wanna do every time you open the camera.
Any solution?
(GCAM also provided the same results)

Redmi Note 10 Pro max owned by me too has the same problem. I had checked many note 10 pro max camera review videos and for them it seems normal as any typical phone camera - smoothens a little, improve brightness, overall the picture gets pleasant and good. However, just on my Redmi note10 Pro max, any human skin gets a darker tone- FYI it is not even the natural color, but darker.
Initially thought it is a software issue and might get resolved with updates. Though I update my phone as soon as updates gets available, so far, after an year and numerous updates, the issue is still there. I tried all settings that they provide for camera and tried other camera apps etc- but results were same.
I suspect it could be a hardware issue due to bad quality control- I'm an electronics engineer and I do encounter one off problems for some items in mass production.
From the conversation above, I'm understanding that there are a few others who have same experience as me with Redmi Note 10 pro max.
Yes this is problem even new 2022 products at least on box all kind of software updates means all reviews on YouTube are fake and paid they just cheat spoiled 22000 on promax 8/128 just because of camera reviews note 9 was far better than this

Very bad camera quality. It darken human face while taking simple photos. Only human photo are darken. Other phone redmi note 9 pro and note 7 note 8 are good. I purchased this phone only for camera. But I wasted my 21000. I m very sad by purchasing this phone. Why it darken human face only. Every setting failed. Also photo crash after zooming. Very bad quality. What is fun of 108 mp camera. Redmi decieving it's customers. In future I will never buy Xiaomi phones.
