So, I tried choosing "Apt-X" from within the developer settings - but it doesn't stick. I know my headphones support it, and I looked up the SD660 - it has support for it as well. So, is there a way to enable Apt-X on the A2?
When you say "stick" u mean u can't select it? I can select either of the AptX options and they stay selected. But I'm not closing settings and shutting off the phone to check if it's still "sticking".
If you can't select them, it may be some other BT setting you've changed that's preventing those from being selected? All of my other BT selections are of the 'Auto' type.

Thats exactly right - I can select them, but back out of settings and then check again and its back to the default (auto). I also tried changing the setting while my headphones were connected - in that case, it doesn't even change temporarily and will stay on AAC.
Same here it always goes back to default setting.. can't even use srgb mode
I think the device build is missing the aptx libraries. Currently aptx is not supported. Maybe they will integrate this in any coming release, but I wouldn't count on that.
Weird enough the device is able to use AAC apple Bluetooth driver.

After further reflection;
Remembered there are other USB settings that don't persist also. Change the USB connection type (say from Midi to Charge Only), back out, return...
It's not persistent either.
I found a way to work around it, for my purposes anyway, just leave the settings app up, don't close it. And sometimes just connecting with USB set it back, so would have to reset it again. But eventually it worked.
Kind of a pain. Because Android One and Lineage are so similar, I'd check in Lineage forums to see if there's a fix for that.
Small update: I installed Magisk and tried applying two separate modules that should add the Apt-X library files to the phone, but no luck. I've resigned to going back to stock and being hopeful that as community support starts ramping up for our device, we'll see a solution.
Oh well! AAC will need to hold us over 'til then.

I can't check, but I saw on another forum that someone enabled aptx this way (and noticed sound improvement): connect headphones, start palying music and only then enable aptx in developer settings. I think you should try it.

I have the same with my Sony MDR-1000X. They support aptx to. But the A2 won't stick to it

I used to have a MI Max and I was able to enable apt-x hd after installing some libraries with magisk. Which process did you follow? I still can't try it on my phone.

Just got the official October update. Aptx is supported nativly now. No need to install any magisk module.

And it's the same whith the Sony codec, none sticks and notice that when you change the codec in the developers zone and then you just start Bluetooth without any device paired it reverts to SBC automatically. Someone is able to change it?

In fact, at least for me, as soon as it connects to a paired device it auto selects the compatible codec.
For my MacBook pro it's AAC, for the Sennheiser Momentum is aptX, for the Bose SoundSport wireless is again AAC.

I dont get it....my headphones are aptx and connect right whith the LG v30 so the problem is whith the Note...
Even whith a Sony headphones the LDAC don't work....always revert to SBC.
Don't know if it's a bug or samsung don't allow them to work .

Yes, nothing at all, it just happens.Between 2 connections it switches back to SBC.

What BT device are you connecting to? For my Sony WH 1000x I have to select LDAC manually as it uses Aptx by default.

Thanks but the codec menu dont appears to me whem im pairing the device and i can change it manually in dev options too but keeps reverting to SBC
I even went to retailer to try whith others headphones and sound bars and it's always the same result SBC...
So I know for sure that's my note 8 problem

Did you try Developer Options.
I checked also I don't see BT codec option in the BT settings. Only available from Developer Options.
Edit: for LDAC I do get this option in BT settings so don't need to use Developer Options. Also Note 8 does not support Aptx HD.

Yes i am using developers option and my headphones are aptx not aptx hd like is supose note 8 to have but dont activate....always revert to SBC
I tryed an app call "media codec info" and aptx is not apering in the list so i dont know if is realy activ or not....

Do you have anything else connected to your phone via Bluetooth, at the same time? Like a Samsung Gear watch, Plantronics Headset, ...
If the second device is not aptx compatible the phone will stay in sbc on both/all devices.
I had the same problem but it got solved as soon as the Sennheiser Momentum was the only device connected to the phone by Bluetooth.
After disconnecting all other devices, stop then restart bluetooth. It should connect automatically to your headphones on aptx.

You can't enable it on a device that doesn't support aptx. if the device supports aptx it will be enabled automatically in developer settings. When you disconnect it will go back to SBC
You have to turn off the "Dual Audio" option in settings... Will work after that

I just updated my MIUI ROM from Android 8 to Android 9. Since I have this one, my Bose QC35 II connected via Bluetooth uses the SBC Codec, which delivers a bad quality comparing to AAC. I tried to change this via the developer options, but when I set to AAC it always comes back to SBC. When I was on Android 8, I had the AAC.
Do you know how can I change that ? I'm on MIUI 10.1.1.0 Global

No it isn't, it's a classical codec. I tried to force it, but it always goes back to SBC, here is my problem !
What I meant is that aptx is superior in every way.
But I guess the BT device your using is aimed at iphones and doesn't support aptx ?
Maybe try and switch to global beta and check if the issue was fixed.

Same thing on my mi mix 2s. While everything works just fine with an Nvidia shield and Android pie. So it's xiaomi fault. I'm Very disappointed because SBC is really inferior.

Already tried on dev mod, doesn't change anything. When you set on AAC, the phone simply doesn't care, hope it will be corrected in an update !
Now I am having the same problem and couldn't find any solution. In Developer options, my arrangements revert to old ones when close, they don't stick. I have Android 8 MIUI 10 Xiaomi Mi6. Via Magisk Manager, I flashed codecs and necessary modules to my phone but nothing's changed. when i connect my JBL Free to my phone, SBC logo right next to the earphone's name is there. Before I lose my mind, someone please help me! I am inexperienced to this complex Android world :crying:

You can use PowerAmp, it can force better audio codec (by cable and BT).

I didn't receive BT fix with my new update and I dont believe I will I bought Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless Earbuds and I rarely have stutters thanks to aptX but if codecs were good I would have perfect connection with these earbuds.
I'm afraid you just have to turn on BT in order to change BT CODEC
Has LDAC support been lost with the Pie Update? I just got the Android Pie update but now when I connect my Sony WH-1000XM2 (which had LDAC working fine in Oreo) to my Note 9, I see it’s only using AptX. When I got to Developer options, selecting LDAC no longer sticks.
When I search on XDA, I see that some users on other handsets that have gotten their Pie update have had similar issues with LDAC support. Does anyone have any insight into this?
EDIT: It turns out that, for whatever reason, when the Pie update happened, it turned off the LDAC setting in my headset's bluetooth profile. It just needed to be re-enabled.

I'm facing similar issues and everytime I change the LDAC preference on developer options it always switched back to aptx. Have you found the solution of this issue?

Yes. Make sure your device is connected. Go to BT > Device > Click the settings gear > There should be an LDAC switch at the bottom.

Hello! I'm at a loss. There "should" be an LDAC switch at the bottom after clicking the gear icon. However, I don't have any such option. (LG Q7+ running Pie.) I used the headphone app to select Quality over Connection. The connection swaps from SBC to ACC. LDAC is available under Dev Options but I'm not able to utilize. Please help!
Bluetooth is dropping within a few minutes every time with this phone which is running the most up-to-date software. I feel like I have tried everything under the sun to fix this including, but not limited to:
Network Reset
Software Repair
Developer Mode Settings
Has ANYONE experienced or managed to fix this issue for themselves?
When I listen to Spotify via bluettoh headphones, sometimes the sounds starts cracking a lot (due to bluetooth interfierence). This happens when wifi is connected to 2.5ghz router + there is a lot of data being downloaded. Most cases restart helps, as after restart wifi data download decreases a lot. If that does not help (may be just few times restart did not help), than I switch off wifi and use celular data. After that bluetooth headphones work well.
PS I am on latest Oreo. Did not update to Pie as call recording does not work anymore without root.

I would actually really like to try downgrading to Oreo to see if that fixes things, but I am new to Android and so I don't exactly know what I am looking for in my hunt for a US image that will work with T Mobile.

As to downgrade to oreo, there was somebody in the forum who has done it and was thinking to make step by step manual... check with him for help.

I have tried all of the developer settings to no avail. The headphones are not broken and indeed are compatible. The XZ1C just simply doesn't hold a connection with any BT audio device whatsoever.

Unfortunately it's not the headphones--I have tried with multiple devices.
I have a 4XL and have noticed that it is not possible to change the Bluetooth settings under developer settings. For example I have Sony WH1000 M3s and whilst it connects using LDAC it defaults to ‘Best Effort’ for LDAC quality settings and cannot be changed. It also will not let me choose another codec such as APTX-HD.
My understanding is that on Pixels (well for the Pixel 3 at least) that best effort results in a lower bitrate than SBC? So this is potentially crippling thre audio quality.
Anybody else noticed this? If so, any solution?

I just picked up a pair of V-Moda Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex cans, and I can't get any other codec besides SBC working via the Developer options.

Trying to use AptX HD also doesn't stick. You can do it in Developer Options by messing with other BlueTooth settings first to match what AptX HD would allow but the next time I connect my headphones it's gone back to LDAC.
I think the main problem is Sony's Headphones app which defaults to LDAC (of course as it's Sony's proprietary codec!) and lack of controls to use other codecs and settings.
In that app I have Sound Quality preference selected at the bottom which actually may be using a better quality setting, it just isn't reflected in what you see in the Developer Options settings.

On the Samsung Note 10+ 5G now allows selection of best audio quality for LDAC, but the the connection quality between the Sony XM3s and the 10+ is very poor. All pointless.
Kind of begs the question as to how much the on paper advantage android has with LDAC and APTX-HD really counts in the real world.
Honestly, irrespective of codecs I actually think iPhones sound better over Bluetooth which is a massive shame and totally unnecessary.

Headphones definitely work without the app, I have used them before on a previous phone and forgot to install it.
BTW everything works as it should the P30 pro, you do not even have to go into developer settings to change it.

And I know for a fact that this is not an issue with the headphones or the app, since I get 909/990 when I connect the same headphones to Sony's Android devices with the app installed via LDAC Bluetooth connection.
Interesting, my 4xl defaults (and is stuck in) to best effort not 660 balanced mode.
I think on Pixels best effort is circa 330 kbps

Always defaults to Best Effort here which is 330kbps for Pixel 3 according to https://www.soundguys.com/understanding-bluetooth-codecs-15352/
I can set it to something else and when I next go into Developer Options it's back to Best Effort! Same with setting the codec to something else.
Pixel 4's best effort seems to be 606/660, not 303/330. At least that's what the bug report says. If the 3 only connects at 303/330, that's gonna be a problem when using new BT5.0 stuff from Sony. They're using an MTK chip for BT5.0, so no aptX, only SBC, AAC and LDAC on BT5 stuff from Sony.

Pixel 4's best effort seems to be 606/660, not 303/330. At least that's what the bug report says. If the 3 only connects at 303/330, that's gonna be a problem when using new BT5.0 stuff from Sony. They're using an MTK chip for BT5.0, so no aptX, only SBC, AAC and LDAC on BT5 stuff from Sony.

That is interesting, sound guys testing of the 3 and 3a indicated 330 for best effort.

Hi All,
There is a fix. I have the Sony WH 1000mx3 headphones and the One Plus 7 pro 12/256 fully updated. Enable developer options in settings on your Android phone if you haven't already done so. Remove then reinstall the Sony connect app (your previous settings will remain after the reinstall). Follow the prompt from the Sony app to connect your headphones by bluetooth. When the headphones are connected go to settings, Bluetooth and Device connection, then Bluetooth. Under available media devices you should see your Sony WH 1000XM3 headphones active. Click the settings icon to the right. Turn off HE audio: LDAC.
Open your preferred music streaming application (Tidal) and play music, verify that the headphones are operating. Go to system, then Developer options. Under Networking scroll down to the Bluetooth settings. The Bluetooth audio LDAC Codec: playback quality has now defaulted to Streaming Optimized for Audio Quality. You can now adjust the Audio Codec, Sample rate, and Bits Per Sample to your preference. The settings will stay and won't need to be reapplied.

bumping this thread, because I was looking for an answer, this was the closest to it.
I decided to dump the logs with adb, and found that my Pixel 4XL, latest and greatest updates as of May 2020, is negotiating 990 LDAC, with the 1000XM3s.
I can use the dev options to push it around to 330/660/990.
No matter what setting I use prior, if I go to auto, it will negotiate to 990, which is pretty awesome. I have not tested to see if it drops off if you walk away from the phone, but given the BT range I get with LDAC, I'm assuming not.
