Hi, just got few Note 9 phones.
I have noticed that both has rear cameras shifted a bit to right side. I mean camera lenses are not positioned exactly at the center of frame. Like on attached photo. Is it defective series.
Who has the same ?

This was known before release. Probably a tight fit in there with battery because Samsung did not put fingerprint sensor lower. BTW, my camera is centered.
If this issue negatively affects how the cameras function, then we have a problem. If it doesn't, well not that I would like it, but it's not really a big deal. I've had phones with this issue before and it didn't affect how the camera functioned.
I think it might have something to do with OIS. Not sure but the camera is supposed to move to keep the image stabilized.
I looked closely, if you are talking about the actual lens being centered in the circle it resides in, the mine are centered. Both the circles are offset in the rectangle camera and sensor window . Maybe your cameras moved during shipping due to a drop, at which case exchange them.

This is standard issue. I've had the Note 5, S7, S8 and now Note 9, all have had off center cameras due to the OIS.

Can you please take a pic of your phone's rear too?
Are you guys sure that it isn't off because OIS isn't being used? I always thought that when OIS is active, the lens hop to the middle.
Edit: just looked up close to my mom's note 8 and when OIS is active, the lens are in the middle.

However, I'm a delighted that there is no red tinge uneveness yay!!!

Guys, the camera modules are hardware supported for OIS. When the camera isn't being used OIS isn't on so the camera lens and housing themselves are free moving slightly. Take a look at teardown videos and you'll see them moving the assemblies around.
Mine is completely centered but doesn't take as sharp picture as my note 8. Oh no! Maybe it's not taking sharper pictures since it's too centered LOL. Damn it.. Now I want an off centered one.

From what I hear, turning off the scene detection setting should improve picture quality. Reviews have said this mode oversharpens and oversaturates the photos.
yeah mine are offset on my Note 9 512gb ATT model, but they actually move to center when you fire up the camera, and when your watching the camera lens, as u rotate the phone, you can see them move to the conditions what the camera is seeing!

I've tried that but it didn't help any. Also disabled tried disabling the flaw detection where it'll warn you if pictures came out blurry. None has helped.

I always thought OIS was just a bunch of springs and is always on, but apparently not.

Indeed so. The black glass 'hole' where my cameras lens sits behind isn't round its slightly oval? No derogatory affect on pictures so...no problem, its just rather odd. :fingers-crossed:

Heard that it's mainly the presets that mess up the image. At least with pictures, manual settings prove to make way better pictures. So do your own whitebalance, lower the brightness a bit.
Indeed heared the same thing. On an other forum someone posted 2 pictures 1 with the auto settings and 1 with manual settings and you really saw the huge different in quaility.
I have attachted the 2 pictures in quesiton. You can see the difference for yourself.
the difference on these two pictures could also be, that on manual setting the sun is behind (southeast) him and on auto setting the sun is infront (northeast) of him. It would be better if we get some pictures taken in a row.
Interesting stuff. Would love to see some more comparison shots, as the poor reviews for the camera is one of the things putting me off this phone.

@ all the owners:
Could you please test the camera with photos and videos and finally clarify once forever these ''mist problems'' ?
Just if its possible to fix with some software adjustments or its an hardware problem...
Thanks
Ah... yeah I really hate that "mist-effect" too. It's the main reason why I'm considering Not buying the 2X and wait for 3D and hope that they've fixed that issue...
I read a review on phonearena.com and they showed a colorfilter called "vivid" which increased the contrast quite alot. That fixed the "mist" problem but then I think the contrast is a bit too high there. But definitely MUCH better.
Anyone know if it's possible to adjust the contrast in the cam app?

LG know there's an issue with the auto settings. And as you can see, if you set it up manually the pictures are just fine. So just wait for a small update, and the issue will be fixed....No biggie really, and defo not HW related.

I took the pictures, so let me nip that in the bud.
The pictures were taken in north eastern direction and indeed there is some difference in time when I took them (1st auto settings: 13:00 and 2nd manual setting 14:30). But there was no sunlight directly in the lens and I used my hand to drop a shadow. Before I took both photos I cleaned the lens cover thoroughly.
As supported by other users: the automatic settings tend to overexpose and the automatic white balance is just miles off. I am sure LG will fix this in a future update and otherwise I'll just keep setting it up manually as I do with my dslr.

can you tell us which settings you changed and to what you changed it?
because from my opinion it does make a good improvement to the auto settings.

To make photo quality better and less blurred - just turn "Stabilization" - "Off".
But it's make sense only for photo mode, video still no solution.

I didn't do more than change the white balance to "sunlight" and underexpose two stops. The under/over -expose function is the "+/-" -sign in the first menu when you press the screen in camera mode. Under exposing is only recommended on a bright day. The biggest improvment is the whitebalance, stay away from the "automatic" -setting.
I am very impressed by all the camera setup options on this phone!
And what about the video? Are they fine?
Hi
I have ordered the 2x and uses a Desire now.
It had the same problem initially.
After first removing the grease (from production) on the lens and on the backside of the protective plastic, the pictures was fully useable.
Later on I removed the easy scratched protective plastic altogether and problem solved.

nice pics though, hard to tell how they stack up without comparing to other cams though. Also while the sensor seems solid we know nothing about the N5 optic stack which is just as important if not more so.
Great pics, but there's a lot of noise on that blue sky.
Indoor shots have surprisingly low noise though.
if it looks as good as in those shots, it's a must buy. especially if it's priced at $299

There's some noise due to welcomed minimal post-processing, but it's uniform not color, which is good news. The IMX179 does pretty well up to ISO 400, from ISO640 and above of course noise becomes significant (still uniform). Then again; I'd put it around the iPhone 5 level which is more than satisfying. Hoping for the same F2.0 lens on the Nex5.

OIS stands for optical image stabilization, but as far as I can tell, the Meizu MX3 doesn't have it, nor do I expect the Nexus 5 to be packed with it. That's a nice area to cut corners. The MX3 pulls these shots cause of the nice Sony BSI sensor, wide F2.0 lens and long exposure time. There's also a lot of noise looking at full size shots at and above ISO800, but results do deliver really nice color accuracy (relative to mobile phones).
Very good photos, nexus 5 would be great
I don´t understand why but my Xperia arc have already an exmor sensor with 1.4μm but when i put the photos at 100% they are much worse than that. Maybe software related?

I also have an arc s, and photo quality depens not only by megapixel but also by lens and software related.
Certainly the lens and the sensors of the mx3 are better, but also the software do his job (have you noticed that photos with a stock-based rom with ics are better than photos with jelly bean?)

That is just a draft, much of the information was copied over from the Nexus 4. Since "OIS camra" is keep being mentioned, my guess is that at the time of making that draft, the camera unit was not yet decided, otherwise it would state it's product number. I do wish we'd get an OIS snapper, but don't find it very realistic. They always cut the price at camera first. With that said, the IMX179 would be a step-up from the current sensor.
I'm not to worried about the camera it's the camera app that worries me. Hopefully it's not a slouch this time and includes 60fps at 1080p

Reminiscent of the HTC one it seems that my unit has a blue bleed onto the sensor from the backside illumination. Look up the m7 low light issues. They get worse over time so I'm thinking what will happen is it starts out very mild as it is now and gets significantly worse as time progresses. Here is an example.
You really have to look for it to see it. Crank up brightness and such. When taking low light photos the outer parts must be dark. But really this bs from a flagship. I'll be returning this phone. LG g3 here I come no more bs knox!

Then clearly progresses into a full blown bad sensor. Looks like you completely missed my point of find it now, see if it's a widespread issue like the m7, track it to see if it gets worse, and fix it under warranry or replace if it's within return period like me. Above was my wife's htc one she never sent in(otterbox) next to an htc one we sent in and got back with a good sensor.
So it only gets worse... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595534 and the main reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507
Again I only made this thread because this is exactly how my wife's m7 started before it turned horrid. I played xcom on my phone which made it pretty hot for extended periods and ad the first thread states apparently gets worse with heat.

I was thinking the same thing
I made a test taking a picture with the lights off and the phone agains my bed.
ISO 100 --> a very nice black photo
Auto ISO (a very high ISO, i can't remember the value, but it's extremely high) --> you can see at the center of the photo a perfect black, but in the corners you can see some purple tint. It looks like noise, but it's a strange behavior that just the corners are affected.
why is it assumed that since you have the faulty sensor thats just how the S5 was made. maybe you have a faulty device and it needs excahnged. try a second device and see how it is. if its similar thgen this maybe an issue. but one thing from one device isnt "bs from a flagship device"
It gets worse if you enable picture stabilization. Mine has quite a bit in low light, but as FarKeld noted, it all goes away at low iso settings.
with picture stabilization ISO goes up to 2000
btw: I'm getting an annoying error "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped" every time I try to see my photos

Hello
Is there anyway to stop the front camera only focusing on faces? I take a lot of product photos where I hold the product up to the camera with myself behind. The camera won't focus on the product, always my face, no matter how far back I am or how much of the product is in shot. It could 80/20 product/me and the camera will still lock onto my face. It's really annoying.

Maybe you are just using Portrait mode. Just untoggle the symbol on the left or switch to Photo Mode.
Would be nice to be able to disable the automatic face recognition as well so you can take more natural selfies..
Don't use portrait mode. It's really screwy with extra faces at different distances too.

In photography its called zonal focusing, a technique used with fixed aperture settings.

True... To be honest, I think that this is a big minus for this phone. We are talking about a 2018 flagship with EXCELLENT photo capabilities in the main camera and great specs overall and I think it's a pitty that Huawei did not put an af front camera, but thank god I hate selfies and I love photography, being a slr freak for the last 15 years, so this phone suits me at least. ??

organcecroc, you showed 2 selfie photos seamingly taken with your Huawei P20 Pro. Were those 2 pictures taken from the front camera or the back camera?
Because your second photo in Photo mode, with sharp background is totally impossible with my P20 Pro; I always get unsharp background...
IF you took the photos with the selfie camera, how did you manage to get the background that sharp? Just selecting the Photo-mode (instead of the Portrait-mode) did not do the trick for me...

I used the rear camera.

FYI, on the Mi 10 Ultra, this should be the clearance you will need to have for phone clamps and gimbals if you don't want them to appear in the shot of the ultrawide camera.

Phone clamps will have to be mounted off-center to the right.
It's possible that the only way to mount this in a gimbal without getting part of the clamp or gimbal in the shot would likely be to use a tray-style gimbal (not a clamp style ie. DJI Osmo 2/3, Zhiyun Smooth X, Hohem iSteady X, etc.) with a way to offset the phone or add counterweights.
I'm eager to hear about personal experiences with gimbals on this phone though!
We still don't know if the geometric center is the center of gravity though. I wonder if the battery weight could move the center of gravity away from the camera system.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.

The geometric center is almost assuredly not the center of gravity. Most every other phone has the center of gravity towards the charging port (right side in the diagram) but the huge problems with the Mi 10 Ultra are that:
- The ultrawide lens is the lens closest to the center of the phone, which is an incredibly stupid thing for Xiaomi to do. They've done the same on the Mi 9 and other Mi 10 phones as well, so this isn't new or special for Xiaomi. It's a dumb design flaw that has persisted across multiple iterations of their phones.
- The ultrawide lens is the widest ultrawide on any smartphone right now.
- Any infringement on the ultrawide will be occurring on the horizontal side of videos shot in landscape orientation, so you don't be able to crop in without losing a ton of resolution and field of view.

So, 8k on every lens except for the 2x?
Any info on the bitrate, fps, manual mode for 8k?
Do you think the phone could be balanced on a gimbal and UW be used in 8k?

And we're back to my solution - shooting in 8k UW, zooming, cropping and producing 4k.
Probably not the best for anyone but I'm currently working that way. Using a phone as a B cam, shooting in 4k and cropping but, as you can imagine, quality is far from perfect.
That's why I so hope Mi 10 ultra shoots high quality UW 8k and gives me some control over the process.

8k is not available on the ultrawide:

I have been using this for a week and had no problems with it. Exaggeration that u need to hold it awkwardly or fingers will be in the viewfinder.
Thanks for the clarification. Did you try to mount it in a gimbal and shooting UW?

I don't have the phone, but just by looking at the measurements I can't imagine how any gimbal could work on this with the ultrawide. If it's not the clamp and roll motor immediately getting into the view, the tilt motor probably would.
I'm also unable to find any videos shot on YouTube with the ultrawide and a gimbal for any of the previous Xiaomi phones with their ultrawide in a similar position on the phone.
I don't understand gimbals much because I never looked into them but based on the above info: when you need a gimbal, would it be possible to attach a removable lead or iron weight to the bottom of the phone to bring the center of gravity way towards that end?
Impossible to use with a gimbal
I bought the mi 10 ultra due to the wider opening angle of the market in wide camera. I tested all the shooting modes and in all of them there is a specific phone stabilization system EXCEPT the video made with the wide camera, which makes the use of the gimbal mandatory if you want a stable video. But the wide camera is in the MIDDLE of the device, that is, the arm and the motor of the gimbal cover all the video on the right side of the scene. Some users are saying to crop the video, but crop videos do not require the gimbal, yet if you want to use it, the gimbal still appears.
