Galaxy Note 9 camera not as sharp - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I have a T-Mobile snapdragon Galaxy Note 9 that I purchased and I noticed that the camera is not as sharp. I don't know if I have been spoiled by the pixel 2 xl but even using the Galaxy s9+ and the note 8 and so forth before this phone, the camera seems very soft.
Another issue is that Snapchat and Instagram cameras take a long time to focus. I know Android and Snapchat/Instagram don't get along that we'll still but I never had these issues with another phone. Still a great phone, just wanted to know if I am the only one with this experience and if I have a defective camera.

Try turning off scene optimizer.

More than half of my picture are not clear indoor or low light. Been comparing it to my note 8 the past few days and my note 8 is consistently sharp. I'm hoping this is just a software issue on the note 9.

Thats what I have been worried about as well... Got a 2XL and love how sharp pictures are.... Been trying to research if the GCam APK Mod is available yet to see if anyone has really tested it out.

That guy seems to have made one work but I havent seen any comparisons yet.

Did you change your screen resolution in the display options yet? (In the display options, not the camera options) I notice my pics weren't sharp either..until I realized my display was set default at 2220x1080..I changed it to WQHD+ (2960x1440) And they look a lot more crisp and clear to me now.

Funny you mention this. I've noticed that 1080p doesn't look as good on the note 9 as compared to the note 8.

I tried the 5.1.20 from that link and although the picture is sharper (similar to my note 8) there is a lot of noise when shooting indoors.
At least this proves the hardware is good and it's just software.

Same thoughts about the camera! Outdoor/good lighting are OK for the most part, but there are shots that just look plain bad! Often get blurry pics or pics that almost resemble an oil painting (like they look blocky/pixelated... hard to explain). I've had this with scene optimization both on and off.
I also have a Pixel XL 2 and am certainly spoiled, but really thought the Note 9 would be better than what I'm seeing, especially how Sammy hyped the camera... Seems with the Note 9 more often than not I am taking 2 or 3 pictures to get a good one whereas with the Pixel XL 2 99.9% of the time that one shot is the keeper and looks incredible. Hopefully Sammy can address this.

Yeah I'm keeping my 2XL and if all else fails if I know I will be taking a lot of pictures I'll toss the sim over into that for the day unless the GCam mod works soon or samsung fixes it.

I honestly wouldn't bank on Samsung getting it fixed unless it is all over the media outlet. They still haven't fixed the gallery issue when viewing gallery in the camera app. It will shows pictures you've downloaded, received, screenshotted when it should just show you the pictures you've taken with the camera. That's been going on since nougat on the note 7.

I have about three pounds of dust accumulating on my Galaxy S3 in the gap between the casing and the glass. I see the LG Nexus 4 also has a similar gap. As do most devices, really, but this Sammy is sure a dust magnet. Here's hoping the LG will NOT be like the Samsung in that regard.

I think you're talking about something a bit different. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, that matt310 was referencing the gap between the front glass and the side edging on the outside of the device.

That's how I read it, too; frankly, I think it would be pretty hard from any of the N4 release photos that would reveal distance between the display & glass.

First use of Zerogap Touch for Real Touch
It’s nice to be part of a conglomerate. Working with its vertically-integrated sister companies, LG incorporated the industry-first Zerogap Touch technology into the Optimus G.
As the first smartphone with the Zerogap Touch, the Optimus G boasts a cover glass that’s different from typical touch screen cover glass. While the others are typically topped with ITO film or a glass sensor, the Zerogap Touch has an ITO sensor film printed directly on the glass, removing the air gap that is normally trapped between the two elements.

Wait, you exhibit poor reading skills yourself, then chide another for the same? It wasn't nonsense at all, clearly on-topic. Nobody can stay abreast of the latest at this neck-breaking pace.
That said, this phone will have at least one less area in which dust can congregate. Yay!
Hmmm I just don't understand the glass back design...? Everybody have laughed at the iPhone 4 and 4s design which broke almost just by looking at it - or at least when dropped from little height. And now Google - as I see it - makes the same mistake!

The difference is the plastic has a lip over the glass so if you were to drop the phone on it's corner The glass itself wouldn't make contact. However I could be misinformed.
It'll be interesting to see drop tests of this device, though. I do love drop tests.
EDIT: I must agree with you, though. The glass back wasn't very wise... :/
That's a good deal bro. imo you should return your GNII and buy the N4 first. Then wait the the 3G/4G version of N10. It will be better thought.
Glass back doesn't bother me. I just won't drop the phone

Galaxy s4 or HTC One (May be joining you all with the One Up plan soon)

Understanding that there will be bias here i will likely ask the same question in the one forums.
S4 or the one? and why?
I can't say either since I don't have.the one. Take this into consideration. Both phones only support 1900 lte. Sprint is turning on 800 and 2500 lte now. 800 will give you way better distance and penetration. Tri band lte phones coming. Other wise the s4 kicks ass. The battery last and its removable. The ones is not and its smaller.
Left HTC over a year ago, after owning each EVO from the very beginning. Would never look back. Plus, the community here is the best buncha guys I've worked with by far!

Battery and SD on S4 sold me as well
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2
User replaceable battery and SD card storage capabilities is why I like the s4. I've had problems with both HTC phones I've owned. On average, I've had less problems with Samsung phones. HTC, in the news, seems to be struggling. Just my opinion.
Both phones are good. HTC one with those speakers, metal build. And that red color it came out in is amazing. The S4 with the camera, sd card, removable battery. With that being said, I've never used an HTC one for more than 40 seconds lol. So I can't tell you any experience of it. But the S4 has been good for me. The first phone I've owned that I haven't cared to put a custom rom on.
I'll never buy an HTC device again. I've personally had too many issues with their products in the past.
I own an S4 and I won a One (gave it to my wife).
Personally I don't want anything other than Samsung, but I admit the One is a great device. I'd say you should go with the Sammy based on my past experience. I've owned several without any issues. Had 2 Evo 3Ds with issues. That turned me off HTC.
If you root, I'd take a look at both development forums while deciding.

That's the other thing as well. Granted the S4,had some issues with root from the get go, but since the S3,its been super easy to root and unroot. HTC some makes some of the best hardware in this industry today, but I've just gotten super fend p with the software and such. Even tho, I haven't tried there latest with the One, I still don't plan on it. Only other device I wild turn to either than a Sammy, would be a Nexus, and that's it. Mostly for developing and Theming purposes. And for people thinking of moving from HTC to a Samsung, stay clear of some of the tech sites that knock on the S4. Take the 14 days that Sprint gives and test it out yourself. Cause I think most of the them are talking out of there arse

S4 on removable battery and microsd... been using TP2 on sero since 2009. If htc would made one with removable batt, microsd and world phone capability with sim card like TP2, I might hv stayed w them... but sadly, although the unibody of the one very aesthetic, it limited several features discussed all important to me... so now its S4.
I posted this over in the ROM threads. But look at these results.

Simple. Galaxy phones are built cheap.. this guy said this happened this morning when he got to work. It plugged it in and about 30 minutes later he noticed this. The charger he brought back is the one that came with the phone.
But like I said. We see this almost on a weekly basis. Just galaxy s3 and s4. Mostly s4. I've only had 2 with s3.

I also had a bunch of HTC's before going to the S4 when it came out. Thought they were good devices, until my wife got an S3 and I found out I was missing out. The Samsung's just work, and work well. The HTC's are quirky, don't pick up data signals as well, cameras have too much tint/over exposure, drop calls more, etc. I'm SO happy with the S4.
Nothing much in the forums about S4's melting. May be happening, but I can't believe it's a big issue at all or it'd be all over the place.
I owned the HTC one for about 2 months and just recently came over to the GS4. I actually like the GS4 better than I like the one. Both are great phones but battery life seems to be better on the GS4 and I just like the look of the GS4. I always use a case on my phones. So build materials mean nothing to me. Also beats is gimmicky IMHO without root and V4A the one seemed to always have distorted bass on certain songs when listening to music with ear buds. This device with moderate sound increase with V4A blows the one out in quality for sound just my 2 cents. I happy I switched.

Does it feel a lot thinner then the N4? My wife has an HTC One and I love the thinness of that device. My N4 feels like a brick next to it. Do you notice much difference when holding the N4 and N5?
Also, how is Kit-Kat. Dies it feel like much of the same? What about screen size? On a 4.7" screen the nav bottons feel like they take up way to much room. On a 5" screen, do you now feel like there is plenty of screen real estate to do what you want to do?
And last for now, how does the screen quality compare to the N4 or any other top of the line phone out now?
Thank for any responses....

Doesn't feel any thinner to personally, When I lay the N5 flat next to the N4 is actually pretty level due to the camera hump.
Kit-Kat is smooth and really responsive, the translucent Status and Nav bar is a great touch imo.
The screen real estate is ok for me, especially considering this is about as big as my hand can support with one handed use. I'm sure as soon as custom roms start coming along we will be able to utilise PIE controls again.
In terms of Screen quality it's really sharp but the colours appear to be slightly washed out but once again I'm sure custom kernels will remedy this.
after some time please share battery life impressions.. !!!

That sucks about the size! So no wow factor with the screen. I love the HTC One screen so was hoping the N5 would be just as good or better.

Can you please post some camera samples? Doesn't have to be anything photogenic, I just want to get an idea of quality when it comes to random pictures in non-optimal lighting situations etc. Could be outside a window, your foot, a wall/chair, doesn't matter.

The soft touch plastic is really nice and doesn't feel cheap at all, It is slightly slippy however.

How does the battery drain look so far? How much screen time on do you have right now -- and how much battery is left?
Can you tell us about the notification LED? Does it work out of the box or do you need to install a 3rd party app?
Thanks!
Has anyone seen any unboxing videos yet? That's my pre-order porn man.

Works fine with lightflow and It's super bright as well!
It's actually better than the LED on the N4

Light bleed

Before all the angry people kick off, this is not just another "problem thread".
Reading through forum I realised that a lot of people won't notice light bleed of they put their phone down when booting as background on KK is grayish. I've seen a few people ask how they check for light bleed. I'm also curious how bad it gets.
Now, before you do it, please keep in mind once it's seen, it can't be unseen, don't blame me for that, I gave you a fair warning and if you didn't read it or ignored it, you suck

Right, download this app, set brightness to max, go into dead pixel tab and scroll horizontally to the black panel. Voila!

Ignore everything but top left corner (2 points) on this pic as this is simply due to the angle. It appears like light bleed, but it's so minor, it's barely visible in reality. Top left corner though is very prominent.
Have fun.

I will give you kudos of posting some actual light bleed instead of just being brighter at certain angles.
I fortunately haven't noticed this on mine, but even if I did -- like you, I wouldn't bother getting it replaced.

Not much hassle, phone call, deposit, wait and use current N5. Mine other one already shipped. Wonder if it's going to be any better....

If the replacement is worse *knocks on wood*, can you just return it to them and keep your current one?

Let's put it this way, if next one is perfect, I'm keeping it. This device only has that one issue. Most of the time I don't see it, but I KNOW it's there. So, if replacement is not perfect, I'm keeping my my first one... Probably...

Fair enough. I just know that, admittedly through the constant rehashing of friends and family, I am too critical of my electronic devices and nothing is perfect. With this in mind, I'm trying to just see the brighter side lol. Good luck to you though man!

I can "live" with things.. Heck, I did with ipad and a few other things.
However display on this device is supposed to be sealed AFAIK. Light bleed like that shows its not, which is an inherited hardware fault. Another reason for this thread is to see if majority of devices is like that and looking for a perfect one is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Which is obviously not worth the hassle.

Do you think this problem will be solved when they will release the next batch?
Look, @undercover , nothing against you personally, I actually enjoy most of your posts, but if you put any device under a microscope, you'll find issues. If slight light bleed visible only during the boot process while in a pitch-black room is the only issue with my phone, I'd consider myself lucky and move on.
I guess what I'm saying is, every device deserves a little margin of error. Every single unit off of the assembly line can't be perfect, and a unit with only the aforementioned light bleed should probably be considered slightly-less-than-perfect-but-acceptable, in my humble opinion.
No bleed here. Goooood!
I guess I'm lucky. I only have light bleed on lower bottom corner and its not even bad. Just BARELY.
Its very very little.

With all due respect this thread is not to discuss what is acceptable error margin to a person.
To simplify, here's the bleed, how much worse/better/same it gets and on how many devices. Everything is relative so I'm trying to work out just HOW relative it is. That's all. I'm not slagging LG, Google, users, nor am I saying every user should return his unit because of certain amount of light bleed. Most of the threads I started are either help threads (passed on to other people now) or analysis of this or the other.
Tis all

LG G8 in hand. Here's what's happening so far

Hey I have a Verizon retail unit I'm reviewing and figured I start a thread about it with what I'm experiencing as I go.
I did an unboxing and first look comparing it to the V40 and the Pixel 3. https://youtu.be/fFcwGiNcJkw
First I must say I like that LG launched this with Android Pie, V40 still waiting. Also it's great to have a wide angle camera back. I stopped using the v40 since it did not have pie and could not set it up from my daily pixel 3 because of it.
I have popped a Verizon sim in so real world testing has started. I will be taking it down to a NASA launch this week so will be taking LOTS of photos and videos with it over the next week. Be sure to follow me @jerflash on Instagram and Twitter for first look at photos.
Let me know if you have any questions and take a look at my other videos ?

1st, could you please show in video if one can turn on "Pie Andriod gestures" on G8 in settings? Or are they totally disabled from kernel and not supported ? That'll be weird 'cause w/o gestures G8 is DOA

The Android Pie gestures are indeed present. When I used my Pixel 3 to fully setup the device they turned on automatically bit you can enable them in settings.
The pill looks a bit different from the one on the Pixel but works the same. The animation is a bit jank when swiping up from the pill to get resents. I suspect they don't think many people will turn it on.

Not sure if you knew this but you don't have to even swipe up. You can just swipe sideways on the pill for recents which I find very quick.

Yes this does work quicker than the pull-up but not quite as intuitive for me. I use it on the pixel occasionally.

Love the LG G8 that I’ve purchased from T-Mobile though I have major issues that might make me trade it in for a Oneplus 7 (if T-Mobile sells it).
work on improving face ID and hand ID for better security features
use TOF camera to create excellent selfies
update the Lg skin already to something more modern UI
full screen gestures as an option (pill gestures are terrible)
perfect night mode in the camera app
Finally, to make a difference join the google android Q beta and be first since both of your phones were out early.
With these problems, if the one plus 7 comes with the 48 mega pixel Sony sensor for binning support, 6.2 – 6.4 inches display and how fast they do updates will make me trade in LG G8.
Can you please share screenshot of camera details using app called hw device info?

Identical to LG v40
The front selfie is different, it uses the same one like the 5x zoom telephoto camera sensor of Huawei p30 pro
