Wi-Fi Calling UK CPW - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
I'm trying to find the setting for turning on wifi calling.
I've spoken to the network and they say they've activated it but I'm having no joy.
Any ideas? Phone is unlocked from carphone warehouse.
Thanks in advance

firstly, what network you on? be more specific! lol

I'm on Sky Mobile.
I don't think the network matters in this case because the setting is not on the phone. It has been activated by the network.

Ah that's why. Phones from CPW and other non Samsung sellers have the XEU firmware. That firmware only supports the WiFi calling and VOLTE for the main networks EE, Voda, Three, O2. And this is a recent update. Same goes for Samsung BTU firmware. Some MVNOs like BT Mobile work fine as they own EE and use their settings. Looking at Google sky do not support the note 9 for WiFi calling.

This is from sky. Just looks like they've not added note 9 yet.
Currently available on the following Sky Mobile devices:
Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, S9 and S9+.Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ2 and XA2.Keep a look out for more compatible devices coming soon.

BTU, or any UK one. Not sure you'd get the extra features unless sky activate it themselves. Many companies who piggy back off one of the main carriers don't have WiFi calling /volte

Hmmm it is hit or miss as the BTU/XEU seems to have only the main networks I think.

This is why I only go with main networks now. Flash anything and I seem to have features. The other smaller piggyback companies have some good deals. But no extra features.
Virgin mobile... £20 a month unlimited calls and texts with 100gb data! No wifi/volte. My boy has it now lol

Was a retention deal and I still pay the same and I am now on a rolling 30 day contract. There was a time last year when all the networks had a gigabyte war! Now they not so generous. I would prefer to go back to EE as three aren't the best network for reception and they have no 4G roaming yet but hey ho. I'm a slut!!!!!

UK equivalent?

Hi all, traditionally Motorola has been releasing the Droid range under the Milestone name here in England, but i havent seen this particular phone anywhere, it is branded under a different name or just simply unavailable? I love qwerty Android phones and the spec is very tempting.
Thanks.

I did a little research and it seems the keyboard Milestones ended with the release of the Milestone 2.
you should be able to use the droid 4 in the UK with the ICS leak, you just switch it to global mode

But will it support the 3G bands used here, that's my main concern as I use HSPA on Three UK.

Yes, it will support standard 3G bands. I`m using it in Russia and in Europe.
I've tested my Droid 4 in the UK on O2 (900MHz) and T-Mobile (1800MHz). I've not tested it on Three though (2100MHz). On the two networks I have tested GRPS, EDGE, 3G and HSPA all work fine!
If you fancy a trip to South Wales you can try your 3 SIM in my Droid 4 before purchase if you like
That said, if you're planning on importing this phone, why would you even stick with a contract, and if you're not stuck in a contract why would you use Three? They are awful.
Three are fantastic, I get truly unlimited data that can be tethered and a ridiculous amount of minutes and texts, not to mention I get a great signal where I live and average at about 4.5mbps speed. No other network can offer me that. Cheers for the info though ill see if I can dig up any info re: 2100mhz band.

Huh strange, I've looked online and there is absolutely no information for a gsm version of this phone, all point to a Verizon cdma device. Never mind looks like ill be on the old Desire Z a little longer ha ha.

It only works in the UK if you run on the leaked ICS firmware.
See my thread for the full procedure. But I'm running just fine on a rooted stock ROM (albeit the ICS leak) on Giffgaff (O2) in the UK.
And yes, I came from a Desire Z too! Real shame how few QWERTYphones there are these days that we even have to go to the effort of importing an American CDMA phone and hacking it.
Hi peops, I'm still on the old desire z too! Nothing better in the uk for 2 years! Unbelieveable! I was also hopeing for the droid 4, but typically, it doesn't get released here. There is the slight hope of the newly leaked samsung galaxy s blaze q being released over here as it will be on tmobile, but I bet it stayes in the us, yet again. Is being announced august 15th.
Problem is, it needs 2gb ram, not just 1!! Sort it out samsung!!

Just import one yourself. £328 for a brand new one off ebay and £35 in import duties. Still cheaper than buying a brand new contract-free phone from a UK supplier!

Thing is, I use my fone as a modem for my pc via hotspot, through tmobile, I have a 3gb contract, but is actually truly unlimited if you know the secret (which I do - just ask if u don't know). I doubt id be able to get a decent amout of txts and calls for say 10-15 a month. And I bet the payg sims don't allow unlimited data. (I currently go though 10 - 20gb a month at the mo with tmobile).

I'm told that with giffgaff you can get away with 750MB per day before they start getting funny with you and accusing you of tethering. Not tried it yet.
The Droid 4 works fine on T-Mobile though. I have tested it before I ported my number.
Are T-Mobile still offering that 3gb contract to new customers? I couldn't get it back at the start of 2011 when I switched to them.

750GB per day? I think that counts as heavy usage!

Hi, no they are not, I'm near the end of a 2 year contract, 1gb is the max now I think, but it doesn't really matter as when they restrict your usage from 4pm - midnight, all you have to do is turn flight mode on and off and bingo! No restrictions!
So simple, but it really does work!

Exynos Galaxy Note 8 on AT&T

This time around, I will most likely be getting the Exynos version of the Galaxy Note 8. There are 2 versions that I am looking at specifically:
SM-N950F
SM-N950N
I've seen a few threads on here where people are trying to get them to work with AT&T, but never asked outright, so I am making this thread in hopes that it could possibly serve as a reference point for everyone:
Has anyone gotten the Exynos, international version of the Galaxy Note 8 working with AT&T, and get full LTE, VoLTE, Wifi calling, etc.?
If so, which Exynos model is it, and how did you get AT&T working?
Thank you so much!
I was using a UK Exynos S8+ on AT&T. You'll get none of AT&T's advanced features. Also, and I didn't realize it until I got the unlocked Note8, LTE speeds are slower with the Exynos radio. If you use Samsung Pay be careful which CSC you buy. Not all of them support U.S. use of Samsung Pay.

How much slower are the LTE speeds we are talking? I can understand if it's slightly slower, but if it's much slower, then no-go.
Honestly, I use AT&T Prepaid, and it already doesn't have things by default such as VoLTE and Wifi calling (I think), so as long as I get stable and relatively fast LTE, it won't matter much.
I just purchased a SM-N950N 256gb I plan on using it on ATT I really do hope LTE works on it as I returned my note 8 snapdragon to get the exynos variant.

That's good; if you could please update this thread with your direct experiences, I could then update the OP if it will work definitively or not. I already read in another thread that it works perfectly with T-mobile, so I can't see why not with AT&T.
UK N950F (XEU Single Sim) on ATT and it's working fine for me... LTE works, VoLTE works and HD Voice works (although i'm not sure if i can initiate a HD call. when i see the HD icon, i assume it's someone calling me via Wifi calling). i'm in some fringe areas, but i still get avg DL speeds of 35-40 mb/s. upload is consistently in the 20 mb/s range which is fine for my needs. @BarryH_GEG, what are your average speeds with the ATT Note 8? thanks.

This is interesting. Would love to get more info about this. If it works that is what I will get. Exynos Already having custom roms, kernels is a huge plus.

If you can can you point me to the csc file you flashed and if you can how did you flash?
I've tried a few that are out there and they all caused simple things like call forwarding not to work.
TIA.

Only other LTE phone I have is the Note 5 which is also not an At&t branded phone, which I assume is what is needed to turn on all the other features.

N950N Olympics Edition on UK carriers

Is anyone using this phone on a UK carrier without any mods at all?
This is the KT branded/unlocked version gifted to athletes.
I don’t care about WiFi calling, just wondering if it will work well on any UK carrier without my having to do anything to it.
Thanks....

It should be fine if the basebands match.
Find the baseband of the network you want to use, (so for 3g I need baseband 2100 and for 4g I need 900)
In the link below you can then compare it to your model (I will assume its the same as the U version despite the KT)
If the baseband matches for 3g you will only get 3g or visa versa. Hopefully they will match for both 3 and 4g.

Thanks for your reply.
On paper, this phone has all the necessary bands to work on TMobile USA but a test at one of their stores with an active SIM didn't have good results. Although the phone displayed LTE, outgoing calls took between 40 and 60 seconds to initiate dialing out, and SMS texts would not go out at all (or if they went out, they didn't arrive at destination phone).
I travel frequently to the UK so I was just hoping that this phone would work out of the box with a UK SIM with no need for mods....

I acquired it directly from an athlete.

Seeing as the N950N is GSM device, you should have no issues using it with any UK cell provider.

You would need to contact T-Mobile or visit their retail branch and have them add your devices IMEI# on their network. For some strange reason some networks require that...
It should work in the UK no problem. Go-to thr Samsung website and it shows all the bands for your specific model (950N) and cross reference it with the ones used in the UK. I think you'll find it's all there. No need to over think it.

Thanks. For some reason, although Tmobile USA has all of the required bands, this phone will not work properly on their network without mods.
The purpose of this thread was to hopefully get confirmation from anyone who is actually using an N950N on a UK network without mods.

Is it working ok for you? Also I have a question, what software version are you on? I'm on the Oreo update but still on the April patch? I am trying to see if anyone has a newer software patch that they have got. I find it strange that I haven't had any updates in 3 months.
Hi. I arrived in London on Sat 7/21... phone would only receive 2G (phone displayed E) and occasionally 3G. I stopped by Vodafone shop and they confirmed all settings were correct. I went across the street to EE and tried one of their sims, strong 3G but nothing better. As I was going to Cardiff for a few days, I used the Microsoft 950XL that I have which receives 4G and better (often displays 4G+).
Not sure what the next step is...
Regarding updates, the last one I got installed Oreo 8.0.0 and Samsung Experience 9.0 on May 24, 2018. Last security patch date is April 1, 2018.

Have you tried the reset network with the Sim in now you are in the UK? That sounds like what happened to me, would only get 3g until I would reset the network with the Sim in. I once tried to put in another Sim and when I put my EE Sim back in I had to reset the network again. I'm even in Germany now for the past week and I get LTE here as well.
Ok thanks, we are on the same security patch. But I would think that we would get updates that are newer than that. On Reddit people are already talking about getting thier July updates, while we are still on the April update.

Samsung Note 9 - SM-N9600 in the UK

Hi,
I've recently purchased. SM-N9600 to use on EE in the UK. It works without issue other than the lack of WiFi calling. I've been reading this forum and can't find a solution to my problem. Somebody mentions rooting it however I am led to believe this will disable Google pay permantely. Is there away of getting the EE carrier firmware on this model? Or away of enabling WiFi calling with disabling Google pay?

With Vodafone I had to call them to enable it, it may be the same with ee.
I will give that a go but I did previously have it working on my iPhone 8 plus....
I don't know about the Note phones, but the Galaxy S series has WiFi calling on EE on non-EE ROMs (eg BTU).
I'm just getting a Note 9 on Vodafone. Hoping it will still have WiFi calling if I switch CSC to BTU. I'm hoping that all I lose is the texts via WiFi calling, which Vodafone don't support.
EE is EVR software see if its available for you model. If it is install it with odin
Thanks for the advise people, any idea if I can get a Evr for the sm-n9600? Or can I use an evr from a different model?
Only way I can get wifi calling to work is turning off volte. Then it connects.
This has been since a few updates back. I'm on EE aswell
Now this Note9 is definitely not what its cracked up to be wish I never got it now to be honest.
Think the oxm_xeu should give uk and Ireland WiFi calling to any network that supports it.
I get WiFi calling with EE Vodafone and three. Also with three when in call I get HD calling.
Have a look on sammobile to see if there is software for your phone.

LOL The most Beast phone available, you think, is not "what it's cracked up to be" but you bought the wrong version?
again, LOL !!!!!
Seriously though, how long have you had it, can you trade it in for the SM-N960F model, that's what you need for the UK and EE if you want to use wifi calling.
The U models all reported to me, when I researched, that you may lose wifi calling.

My Note 9 is smooth and has zero problems, yes, I'm not making it up man. You might have a rouge bad app or something.
These things are incredible! Sorry you're having issues, I'd do a factory if you have any lag at all, and if still there swap it out.

is VoLTE and Wifi calling that important?

I have been on T-Mobile for past 2 years and have never used VoLTE mad Wifi calling. I always switch them off on any new phone... Just wanted to see why it is important for so many and if I am missing anything by switching them off...

No VoWifi is really a deal breaker for some people that travel international or go to areas where the cell signal is bad "inside apartments" or non existent but they have access to WiFi.

Just curious..Does Wifi calling allow incoming calls as well on Wifi when there is no cell signal? Or just outgoing calls?

It allows everything in and out as well as text and MMS just like you have a full cell signal even though you might be in China in airplane mode with only wifi active. Welcome to 2019!

That's awesome.. didn't know that.. I am planning to buy the India version and use it on T-Mobile.. not sure if it will have those 2 features... It at least has VoLTE for Indian carriers, so I assume it should work on T-Mobile also....

At this point I wouldn't buy anything till others try it first. There is no guarantee that an India version will do VoLTE or VoWiFi on a USA carrier.

I could be wrong. But I do believe that the VoLTE ability is carrier specif. Phone manufacturers have to be on the approval list and be able to use the correct bands. In the United States, I also believe that the manufacturers have to pay to be put on that list. I believe it was another thread in this forum that stated something along the lines of 250k (but don't quote me). EU and Asia's markets are handled differently.

My office here and in Philly have serious T-Mobile signal issues, but since it’s blanketed with WiFi, not an issue. No VoWifi makes the device useless as a phone in those places, where my iPhone XS and Razer Phone 2 work fine.
