Yea the may do a beta program like they did with oreo on s8 but I doubt it.
I highly doubt battery life is going to magically get better. When has it ever?
I'm actually perfectly happy on Oreo. I've never been one to rush to the latest update but then again I never bought Samsung phones for timely OS updates, LOL!

Hopefully we see pie by the time Google releases android 10
Does it matter? No sooner the upgrade will posters start to moan about Pie? Happens every upgrade. We have Oreo and its stable, enjoy it. Enjoy your Note 9.

Honestly all they need to fix is Exynos battery. I always hated Samsung for slow updates but quite honestly they always had majority of features before they were even introduced to stock Android
I think we're going to get Android Pie right after the Galaxy S10 launches. They wouldn't dare launch it with Oreo on board.

Easy answer. After galaxy s10. If u look at samsung history they have always waited for their flaship device to arrive and shipped with their new version os without ipgrading their pass decives. Why would a note 9 be release with 8.1 while gs9 plus is still running 8.0. They are basically same phone hardware wise. Samsung dont care about updating their old hardware, they care releasing their new hardware with their new software to give people a bigger reason of why u should upgrade. After the honemoon is over then they will release it to their old hardware.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I think early 2019 is great considering they need to smooth everything out before pushing a new software upgrade. Until then we just sit back and enjoy our powerhouse device.

Mainly a rant thread, but seriously LG G4 already getting AD6.0 and now i've read HTC M9 getting 6.0 and A9 getting 6.0.1.
Sammy sold the highest android phones number, and yet they so slow in providing updates, they start testing beta in next month only.

Because Samsung has touchwiz and has to make it perfectly compatible. Takes a while.
That's not an excuse, HTC M9 getting 6.0 tommorow and A9 getting 6.0.1, G4 already getting 6 and G3 started to get it today... Samsung is soo late only now they releasing beta 6.0 to certain GS6 devices.
Yes, it IS an excuse. It is just one that you don't like.
Samsung is updating at the speed they want. I would fully bet that they were intentionally waiting for 6.0.1, as 6.0.0 likely had some issues they wanted to see fixed.

I hope it's true and they learnt from their mistakes, i remember a lot of GS5 users complained about lollipop more than usually, same with 4.3 that was one of the worst updates sammy ever made.
For me, I would rather get a solid update than the fastest update.

Samsung policies are stupid..They wont release Marshmallow until S7 is out.. ultimately this would be one of the selling point for S7.

If that would happen, that could backfire so fast specially since 6.0 was released to all other devices. heck G3 and GS5 released same year, yet G3 already getting android 6.0, idk if galaxy s5 will get it, and if it will probably Q2 2016... Samsung support is lacking and need to be changed, but since they beta testing android 6.0 now, i hope they won't use it as an excuse to "delay" it to until GS7 launches.
It's been well known fact Samsung always behind to provide latest update then why one should buy Samsung devices?
Google test everything for their devices before os release so they don't have to wait that's very clear and not difficult to understand their devices always will remain first to get os update. Comparison with LG or HTC have no sense as well as as far as no one have hardware differences as compare to Samsung. Do they have to think about spen? Samsung theme? S health? NO
These are the features needs to modify almost everything to provide support with new os and can only be understand if you have developed something.
They can split the updates to two parts, the main Android 6.0 base update without updating the minor stuff like s health, themes, and just make S Pen compatible, then after short while release a package of updates android 6.0 updates, idk if it possible, but sure as hell Samsung could be faster, again if they put 6.0.1 with as little to no bugs, then i prefer it over rushed release.

I think this time a little bit different. They seem want to improve their Rom quality, do it more carefully. Years ago I realize that Sam S series always be first to update because they are flagship and almost no special features like Note series. Absolutely I agree with you about Sam Roms are very different to HTC, LG.
But as Note 4 users, I was very angry about their update: no theme, no new features, no change on S Pen function, quite bad battery life.
Anyway, Samsung as most profitable Android OEM, have to change some points, do something better about update and Rom. We pay more, they do more better!

I want 5.5-5.7" phone. Nexus 6 and 6P fit need but their battery life not so good. Note 5 just enough for me fullday usage only after extreme optimized/tweaked.
Samsung galaxy A5 being expensive midranger doesn't got full amdroid marshmallow support! It was upgraded from kitkat to lollipop with some changes but marshamllow upgrade didn't changed anything except Android Version and API level.
Being cheap and lower in specs wise Galaxy J5 got all the Marshmallow feature. It has got theme support, newer notification panel etc. Which galaxy A5 lacks!! What is the reason behind it??
To sell newer devices obviously.
Well, look on the bright side, A5 will eventually get 7.0, while J5 won't.

They have around 30 devices floating around from the last 3 years. The Galaxy S5 for example did not get updated to the newest Touchwiz version although receiving the update to marshmallow. It's a marketing thing for sure but as the average user won't care too much about the UI it's just not worth the hassle to port newest Touchwiz to outdated devices.

It will. I wonder how long it will take Samsung to realise they need to step up their update game. Waiting for an update for a whole year to come - not cool. Only receiving one, max. 2 software updates at all - not cool either. If they really want to beat Apple in the future they need to proof they can handle updates well.

Ideally those features should come with the Oreo update of Note 8. Can't see any other logical reason for delaying the update of their current flagship as most of these tweaks require dual camera which s8 or + dont have thus they just released the oreo without that. But, they cannot release the new features on Note 8 before they show it off in S9. Thus the hold up in the update. Releasing a Oreo update for Note 8 without those features and then again releasing one more later with the update is too much work thus they must have skipped the former.

After the s9 sales well yes the note 8 will get key features as for anytime soon no forget it
Hopefully we at least see Oreo soon. I'm still salty because Samsung just cut the Samsung Pay reward points in half....
We will see (I hope) many good things when Oreo hits the note 8, I can not say that features from s9+, but hey! They belong to a different series, I bought my note 8 for what it is and the features it offered from day one, so, anything else would be a very welcome bonus, that is why I do not complain or whine about oreo still not coming, I like my device as I bought it, that is why I chose it, that`s it.
i did saw the live launch yesterday and they displayed for a few seconds that the S8/S8+/Note 8 is AR capable
so lets see if Oreo update will allow us to have S9 AR capable camera features
Honestly I doubt it unless 3rd party ports them. They're running out of ideas for new upgrades it's obvious and to port new software features to older phones isn't the best marketing move. That's just my opinion.

S9 system dump was just released. I already ported it but without Oreo most stuff doesn't work and it's extremely buggy. If anyone wants screens or anything just join my Telegram group [at]JaysRoms . Once we will get Oreo. I will port S9 to Note8 .
Samsung messed up this time BIG time. We all paid very good money for the note 8 for a good phone - ok? Yes, that is true but to wait almost a full year for the Oreo update? Common SAMSUNG...
Now the S9 series will be on top of everything and in a few months the Note 9 will so our 1000 bucks Note 8 will be "old" , "sluggish" an so on... This is bul**** my friends.
When I pay this money I am expecting fast update, support and ALL the new software features. But we are to blame! We should stop buying new phones every year! If we stay with a phone at least 2 years and don't give them our money they will start to understand that a 5 months old phone IS NOT OLD!

your first mistake was expecting fast update from Sammy. they are known for their obscene late updates and if im not wrong, the current price of the Note 8 is already pretty low before S9 even hit.
i was even thinking of rooting but thx to Substratum especially the font addons. again, i maybe wrong, cause i do shot video at 60fps, rooting may very well kill that feature. yeah, there is rooted stock rom but i root for flashing purer rom if theres such word and therein lies the problem, no more 60fps!
Anyone who expects S9 features to be present in the Note 8 rom must be smoking something illegal...
Where in the world is the economic sense to supply these features in their next phone if owners of older phones have it already?
Why would you update your hardware if you are already running most of the improvements?
We'll probably get a slightly beefed up version of Oreo that the S8 and S8+ got and won't see any of the S9 features until 6 months after the S9's and S9+'s relaese. There's no money in it for Samsung...
My view on major updates is mixed. Monthly security updates are in my view mandatory and Samsung continues to offer those down to the S6.
Major OS updates can yield mixed performance and stability results when applied to older hardware. Further, the advances from say Nougat to Oreo- range from significant (Treble (which the 8 series will not get with Android 8.0), better battery life, notifications, etc ) to cosmetic.
Samsung Experience new version tweaks seem even less important. I can live without new emojis for example.
I think the bottom line is that with Oreo and Project Treble, Samsung and others should be able to churn out faster and more reliable updates. The issue pre Oreo was more on Androids limitations and less on Samsung's intransigence. That said, the omission of Treble from the 8 series Oreo updates is troubling. Maybe this will come with 8.1.

No Samsung won't be releasing any of the s9 features for note 8 as it would cripple the s9 sales and the note 9.
They only did that with the note 5 when note 7 was recalled as a apology of some sort.
The XDA devs on the other hand are know to to port stuff somewhere down the line but sadly we don't ha e that many devs for note 8 yet as we did for previous notes such as note 3 and 4.
Hopefully more devs will buy note 8 when note 9 is released when price falls.

It used to be that way, certainly in Europe. I expect that providers in USA have made deal with Sammy to wait with the FW updates for the unbranded/ unlocked until the providers have pushed out their updates, this to lure customers to buy phones and services from the big providers.

Yeah, I agree. The sufferings of capitalism and putting money before costumers.
Anyhow, I don't get why S8 and S8+ are getting updates and Note 8 isn't. Like I haven't even heard of carriers actually releasing Note 8 OTA for Oreo yet. On the other, I think that's not true and they just wanna piss us off. N8 is the latest Note flagship, they gotta take care of it!

If you took a moment to search the forums before commenting that Samsung is not taking care of note8 users it would be awesome. Just because it's a flagship does not mean it will get updates first.
Note8 series is not the best selling popular Samsung phone. S series is the main bread and butter for Samsung.
Past couple of years I have been following Samsung and it's update cycle, it's always S series first and then N series.
Just have patience and again learn to use the search function sometimes. This discussion has happened multiple times and answer always is if you need immediate updates get Apple/pixel phone. If you can live with decent delayed updates, go for s series.
If you care for good hardware and build but ok update speed (updates will come for sure) note series helps .

I am just making a point that people need to search the forums before posting any comments. Also no one should feel entitled that since its a flagship or they paid big bucks, that the manufacturer should drop everything and cater to their needs. Should we expect Android 9 to come to the Note9 faster than previous updates on notes due to project Treble? Is that thing actually doing anything? The Note8 took FOREVER to get Oreo. Was that a Project Treble phone too? If so, I guess I should anticipate waiting until like February/March again, which is a shame for a flagship phone like this. That would be worse than the Note8 Oreo time frame! It had better be better than THAT! Haha.
Good to know that the Note8 wasn't Treble. I was not aware. That's encouraging!

S9 plus is a treble device, but it's still on 8.0

I mean, Android 9 just came out though. Unless you're thinking it would be 8.1, and that's your point?

Exactly, 8.1 has been out six months or so and I thought treble would make those smaller updates more timely.
Dont expect update on this for a while. One of the reason why im holding on this phone. Samsung extradegy is always release their new flaship with the updated OS while leaving other phone behind. We wont see android pie on the note 9 until after the GS10 release in march (or so) with pie include has the new OS. Samsung will just release security patches every 2 or 3 month until this.

Ugh, that is right... I forgot. I was using those early Oreo ROMs for the Note8 way earlier, but forgot the official wasn't until around 4/1.

Somewhere in that neighborhood, yeah. It would be cool if the same happened on the Note9!
treble might provides updates a bit faster but I have had the galaxy s3, s5, s7e,s8 and now note 9 and updates were always very late and I think it would always be like that. maybe faster with treble but won't ever get updates as fast as others and we are going to wait months but I am sure no one has bought the note 9 or samsung phones for the fast updates ^^
After all the hulalbaloos and deep dives, lately I've been pronouncing it as "project trouble" for Galaxy flagships.
Working Pie GSI Rom for S9+
Since the hardware is exactly the same, will it work with Note 9?
<The guy in the video claims it should work on the Note9 too>

Should we expect Android 9 to come to the Note9 faster than previous updates on notes due to project Treble? Is that thing actually doing anything? The Note8 took FOREVER to get Oreo. Was that a Project Treble phone too? If so, I guess I should anticipate waiting until like February/March again, which is a shame for a flagship phone like this. I'd be pleased if it was out before 2019 begins. That's more than enough time I think.
What do you guys think?

i have stopped myself from getting samsung since years ago due to the poor software updates. And i do not expect note 9 to be faster than any predecessors. i would still be alright if note 9 will never get Android Pie till 2020 (or neveR). Thats samsung and people should have expected that. Reasons i got myself the device was due to the 5 pillars of smartphone which Note9 did well, go watch the video by mkbhd.
This is really good news! Already, there is a Pie version of S9+ with Samsung Experience 10! It may be in its infant stages, but as the article mentions, that's at least a couple months faster than the last cycle (to Oreo), and this seems like a larger update.

Isn't it the case every year ?
Last year, I remember there was even a beta program for the S8.

Yes, but as I mentioned, it is two months ahead of last year's schedule with the S8+.

I'm pretty sure that last year the registration for the S8 Beta program began the first week of November and the first official beta release was just after that (I think around the 5 November or something like that).
Here, we have just a leaked firmware, around 1 month earlier than last week official beta. So don't get too excited.
Edit : I did a quick search and I find that the second beta firmware was released on the 10th of November last year.

So, I really doubt things will be quicker this year.
Well if the Pie update is indeed released in January, then that would be a pretty big improvement in my world (especially with how much more significant of an update this is)! Project Treble for the win?
