I'm on stock Nougat on my T713. This tablet does everything I need it to do so I haven't felt the need to install a custom ROM. The security update is January 2018 so I'm wondering if we'll ever see another one. If I knew for sure we wouldn't, then I would probably bite the bullet and install Lineage 15.1 or 16. What do you think?
I'm running a T715 and I got the T715XXU2CRH1 update a few days ago which comes with 1st June 2018 security patch.

That's encouraging. The Samsung website does show the T713 in the group scheduled for that update so I guess I'll hold on a little longer.

Are you saying that you have been on Nougat, since January?
Which version of the Tab 2 do you have and how has Nougat treated it?
My Nook version, just received the Nougat update, today, but I delayed it, because I wanted to see if it was a problematic update.
Marshmallow crippled my Nexus 7 tablet and I did not want to repeat.
I hadn't taken any measures to prevent updates, because I didn't think it would receive an OS update.

I have the 8" Tab S2. It came with Nougat but it appears Samsung has ended security updates. I installed LineageOS 15.1 two weeks ago and it's working fine. The security patch is September 2018. I don't miss anything about the stock Samsung ROM.

Thanks! I'd rather not root, if I don't have to, as this tablet is used by the wife. It is the SM-T713 UD Nook version.
I can't recall if I did anything to prevent the Nougat update, months ago. Today it received the notification that Nougat had downloaded to the tablet and is ready to install.
I'm hesitant to "upgrade" because it performs flawlessly, now.
Did your tablet suffer any I'll effects with Nougat or was it a good update?
Did you factory reset after receiving it?

Mine is a Samsung SM-T713 and it came with Nougat. The only updates were the security patches which came every 3-4 months until they stopped. Never had any issues with Nougat or the updates. I don't know what difference there is in the Nook version.

It does have Barnes and Noble and Samsung applications that cannot be uninstalled and TouchWiz is the launcher. I couldn't find any hardware info in settings.
It seems like this one can be rooted in case the update is a bad one, but it's got a lot of Knox stuff. So that worries me.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-tab-s2/SM-T713/ Well, updates still are made, but maybe not for your country code. Phone Info app shows more information about your installed firmware which might be of use here

You need an app like CPU-Z or Droid Info or similar to get the chipset info. Although you can't uninstall the Samsung apps, you can disable many of them and then (I think) they disappear from the app drawer. I always use a 3rd party launcher.
I don't think you need to worry about an update going bad if you are stock. Once you root and/or install TWRP, you cannot take a Samsung update or that will screw things up. I'm not even sure it would try to install.

BLU does not have a very good track record with maintaining or updating their devices... If not for Amazon that variant would still be stuck on 6.1.... But it is a nice phone for the price.... We would stand a better chance of getting Nougat if everyone that bought the device contributed to a fund, and paid Tinno to develop it....

Better not expect it. Marshmallow still respectable, especially for general users who don't care if their phones got current version.

Would be nice. Sucks to buy a new phone only to find the NEXT android OS version comes out with new functionality like google assistant right after, and the phone MFR is all "sorry not upgrading that model" :silly:
Yeah, but it's much easier to take lack of updates on a $60 phone than a $600 phone!
Lenovo dropped updates on my, then $230, Moto G LTE xt1045 only 10 months after it was released. And that update from kitkat to lollipop was reported to have lots of problems.
Really? It's a 60 dollar phone it's already a heck of a value. It's not like 7 has any must have feature.

BLU did promise (actually "with a guaranteed update to Android 7.0.") to Android Authority during an interview about the BLU r1 HD, http://www.androidauthority.com/blu-r1-hd-announced-700951/
"US based, BLU Products, announced a new budget smartphone to its lineup for the US market. The BLU R1 HD is sold unlocked, backed by a 2500mAh battery and is currently one of the few devices yet, confirmed to run the upcoming Android 7.0 Nougat when it arrives later this year."
Will be interesting if we actually see Nougat since we haven't even seen LTE band 12 yet and that was promised by both Amazon and BLU R1 HD (shortly after release) 5 months later no update yet.
I would expect an CM rom or something to be completed and working perfectly before BLU officially releases a Nougat update.

Hey, my phone got updated this morning! Was it Oreo? No...no, it was a security patch. Are we getting Oreo before the G7 comes out or is it not looking too good for the G6?
Not really sure why everyone is so impatient about getting Oreo. 7.0 works fine and we are getting security updates. What doesn't work that requires Oreo? I'm happy to wait.
given the issues that tmo seems to be having with the oreo update, im very much ok with waiting for it. 7.0 works quite well and we are getting the security updates.

This update is rolling out in waves. The last update was the December security patch so nothing unusual here. It will come to you eventually.
Android Authority reports the US Verizon G6 got Oreo today. T-Mobile is usually the last among US carriers to get major OS updates, so I suspect we'll get it in July.

I believe it is because T-Mobile does so much mucking around with the MFG's FW. I think they monitor the apps you install, block tethering apps (at an OS level), and do other things that are not good and add bloat.
I am rooted and waiting for Lineage or another to become more stable and I am ditching T-Mobile's FW releases.

It was OTA. Popped up late the night before I made that post. As long as you're not rooted or modified any system files, I don't think an unlocked bootloader will affect an update.
And a lot of the lag cleared up. Just some FC issues with some games at first start. Still don't have great wifi or cell reception with this phone.
Should we expect Android 9 to come to the Note9 faster than previous updates on notes due to project Treble? Is that thing actually doing anything? The Note8 took FOREVER to get Oreo. Was that a Project Treble phone too? If so, I guess I should anticipate waiting until like February/March again, which is a shame for a flagship phone like this. I'd be pleased if it was out before 2019 begins. That's more than enough time I think.

Exactly, 8.1 has been out six months or so and I thought treble would make those smaller updates more timely.
Dont expect update on this for a while. One of the reason why im holding on this phone. Samsung extradegy is always release their new flaship with the updated OS while leaving other phone behind. We wont see android pie on the note 9 until after the GS10 release in march (or so) with pie include has the new OS. Samsung will just release security patches every 2 or 3 month until this.

treble might provides updates a bit faster but I have had the galaxy s3, s5, s7e,s8 and now note 9 and updates were always very late and I think it would always be like that. maybe faster with treble but won't ever get updates as fast as others and we are going to wait months but I am sure no one has bought the note 9 or samsung phones for the fast updates ^^
After all the hulalbaloos and deep dives, lately I've been pronouncing it as "project trouble" for Galaxy flagships.

i have stopped myself from getting samsung since years ago due to the poor software updates. And i do not expect note 9 to be faster than any predecessors. i would still be alright if note 9 will never get Android Pie till 2020 (or neveR). Thats samsung and people should have expected that. Reasons i got myself the device was due to the 5 pillars of smartphone which Note9 did well, go watch the video by mkbhd.
This is really good news! Already, there is a Pie version of S9+ with Samsung Experience 10! It may be in its infant stages, but as the article mentions, that's at least a couple months faster than the last cycle (to Oreo), and this seems like a larger update.

I'm pretty sure that last year the registration for the S8 Beta program began the first week of November and the first official beta release was just after that (I think around the 5 November or something like that).
Here, we have just a leaked firmware, around 1 month earlier than last week official beta. So don't get too excited.
Edit : I did a quick search and I find that the second beta firmware was released on the 10th of November last year.
https://www.google.fr/amp/s/www.sam...-android-8-0-oreo-beta-firmware-released/amp/
So, I really doubt things will be quicker this year.
Well if the Pie update is indeed released in January, then that would be a pretty big improvement in my world (especially with how much more significant of an update this is)! Project Treble for the win?

Thanks, I will root on next time. Upgrade worked on 4th try with 5 GB free on internal storage and 60% battery.
I went to the sammobile page every day like clockwork for all of November. Was doing the same for December and finally saw it.
It didn't pop up until TODAY, December 7th, 2022, despite being labeled November 29th, 2022.
But its here. Interest in this device seemed to evaporate with Android 11, so I have no idea if Android 12 or 13 can be rooted at all. Unless a clear answer to that, and if the old rooting technique will work, and if magisk can still be used or if some sort of alternative is necessary, guess I'll stick to 10.
But for the handful that still have the phone and don't root, Android 13 is finally here.
On this phone I would stay on 9 or 10. Android 13 is so far worse than 12 and many have rolled back to 11 from 12. CPU cycle sucking scoped storage is active from 11 up with more security garbage piled into 12, think 13 will be any better?
Or more of the same crap?
I'm not buying the Google hype, both Google and Samsung are on a 3 year losing streak of bad choices and products. Obviously you can upgrade at any time; let Mikey try it first

I have two N10+'s one running on 9, the newer on 10. Very unlikely either will ever be upgraded.
The Pie one seems to run best and is easier to work with. Current load is 3 yo now, still fast and stable; no way I'm messing with that.
Personally I wouldn't upgrade past 10 as you will lose more than you gain. Both 9 and 10 are secure unless you do stupid things.
