Weird shrunk lock screen behavior - Huawei P9 Questions & Answers

Hi there!
A few days ago I bought a used broken Huawei P9 on ebay. Seller said he can't get it to boot, so that's why he wants to sell it. I thought he has probably just never heard of hard reset and stuff like that and that I can probably fix it.
So I got the phone to boot up, but then I noticed something weird.
The lock screen is somehow very small and takes up less than half of the screen.
In addition to that the screen doesn't respond to any touches.
Link to a photo of my screen: ibb.co/ixmLKe
I know the touch screen isn't broken, because the boot animation looks normal and in recovery mode I can select the buttons by touching. So everything works properly up to the point when Android boots up.
I've tried various Android 6 stock roms, bootloader is locked, phone is not rooted.
I can boot up to recovery and fastboot, but I can't unlock bootloader, therefore I can't really make use of fastboot.
Has anyone every experienced such weird behavior on an Android phone?

You can try with DC Phoenix
https://www.dc-unlocker.com/DC-Phoenix-flash-repair-tutorial
maybe it can force to unlock Bootloader (and then to restore firmware)

I read this minimized screen can be caused by the Smart-Cover Mode (Picture). If you have a Cover, try to open and close it a few times (there's a magnet inside the cover that indicates changes). If you have no Cover you can use a magnet to simulate one. More about Covers. https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/accessories/huawei-p9-smart-cover-t3492401

That definitely makes sense. I looked it up and my screen looks exactly like if the phone had a smart cover on.
You're a lifesaver!
I've tried a magnet, but it doesn't seem to change anything.
I found this post by another user on here with the same problem and he solved it, but his solution is a bit complicated.
I'm still not sure how to solve it, but at least I know the problem now and I will look into it.

Dear Admins, sorry for the native language excursion:
Gern geschehen. Viel Erfolg!

I got it fixed at a local repair shop, but all they could do was to replace the display unit.
It turned out to be a water damage and because of that the smart cover mechanism was broken, which lead to the phone always acting as if a smart cover was put on.
You could try fixing it with a magnet first, but for me that didn't work.

i read your description and checked the photo of your phone, and i am currently experiencing exactly the same issue. in my case, it is almost certainly related to moisture (the phone had a short adventure in a (clean!) toilet bowl). i am hoping a few months of drying in a well ventilated spot with an open sim card slot will fix it (for you as well), while i borrow my boyfriend's spare windows phone (ugh!)...

Shuts off when keyboard is slammed shut...

This is really bugging me but on occasion, when I slam the keyboard shut, the phone turns off. It also has happened when I opened the keyboard but only a few times.
I actually dissassembled the phone to see if maybe it was a loose connection somewhere. I did find that the keyboard ribbon cable was loosely connected so I reseated it firmly...but the problem didn't go away.
I also thought it may be either the SIMM card or the memory card contacts but after removing them, again, I still can reproduce the problem.
Understand that this is an intermittent problem and a little unpredictable but I can make it happen within a few tries. If I cautiously open and close the keyboard (without slamming it shut), I have no problems.
I don't believe it's software related because I can force it to happen when the device is booting up (with the Ericsson logo on the screen) before the OS loads.
Anyone else experiencing this?????
11/17/08 UPDATE: PROBLEM RESOLVED!
After further review and testing, it appears that the battery was losing connection to the battery contacts. I shoved a small crumb of paper folded up (about 1mm thick) at the back of the batt and the problem has gone away. Of course, I'm still holding my breath every time I open and close the keyboard but it looks like that may have been the problem. That's strange because I'm using the original battery. Thought this may help in case anyone else ever runs into this.
That sounds like a problem with the internals, maybe a you should get it replaced/repaired?
Kid says to doctor " IT hurts when I twist my arm backward like this." Doctor replies "then don't do that"
You say "my phone shuts off when I slam my keyboard shut" Doctor says "don't slam your keyboard shut"
this thought just made me laugh.
Seriously though. It does sound like an internal hardware issue that you should have fixed otherwise it may just get worse and start happening more regularly and at very inconvenient times.
Good luck.
Reminds me of my samsung slider phone the day that it died. I was sliding it back and forth.. sometimes the screen would go completely white and then come back.
By the end of the day, it went white and stayed that way.
Turns out the cable on the inside was slowly being cut from rubbing against the metal hole it was going thru every time the slider moved.
You've checked the cables before... but maybe its not cut yet, but something on the slider mechanism is hitting a wire/pulling on it.
Nobody knows.
But we all do know thats not normal. So yea get it replaced.
LOL!

Yep...It's going back. Might as well get a fresh one. I know this problem existed for other phones before and the fix was mostly something simple that didn't require a replacement.
im getting exactly the same problem. gonna send mine back as well.
i have the exact same problem too! Waiting for a new one...
i thought i was the only one with this problem, but it looks like a production error as there are already 3 people on this board who have this defect.

yep, my problem seems to have gone now as well by using you're method. i was almost ready to send it back and then i saw you're post and tried your method and it worked !
Thats a pretty stupid mistake by SE...
They should do a quick fix by making new batters a smidge thicker. Of course they probably wouldn't offer free replacements, but they should fix it anyway.

Where did you place the paper exactly ? On the back of the battery where all the info text is or on the bottom ?
When my device is cold, eg in the morning for first use, this sometimes doesnt happen for >20x tries...but when i used it for a longer time and it almost always shuts down when slammed shut..but i already thought it might be something with the battery, but sometimes while slamming it shut for numerous times even the battery cover would come up and it didnt shut down...then in another situation it shuts down immediatly
Poor design...

Yea...what I found with the design is that the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard sits right under the battery. In fact you can see the protrusion when you remove the battery under the white label. It moves when the keyboard is opened and closed. Slightly...but it does move.
...anyway...I folded a small piece of paper to wrap around the back edge of the battery.
Try this:
1. Make a small rectangular strip of paper about 10mm x 20mm and fold it the long way so you end up with a 5mm x 20mm piece.
2. Wrap it around the back/bottom edge of the battery as you reinsert it.
(If the battery fits more snug in its compartment, you got it right!)
3. Put the back cover back on--which should also be more snug.
4. Turn on the device and try it out (slam the keyboard).
(You don't have to wait for it to completely boot up...you can test it when the SE logo appears).
Be careful to use regular copy paper and not paper that's too thick as it may cause some other damage/problems with the device.
could you make a picture of that ?
Actually i will recieve a new device tomorrow, but i still have the feeling that this problem might reoccur as it seems to be a design flaw

this is sometimes an issue when your inbox/sent messages get full.
you can clear them out or reflash the rom.
I've heard of a lot of people sending their phone in for repair for this issue but try clearing them out/or re-flashing because I'm 99% positive its a software not hardware issue.
Sorry But reflash with original Rom, and Empty box wont help I have the same. Maby is some driver? I clean my keyboard with vacuumcleaner, but the same happen, dubles or triples letters, or eating letters or spaces.
Well, all my inbox from sms, email, etc. are empty
i hard reseted 3 times right now...
seems ill have to send it to repair (for second time now.. ive used my xperia only 1month from 2 haha, lets wait another 1 ^^...)
if any1 knows another way to solve this.. i got until monday to send it to repair !!! would be very thankful !
thank you very much !

if the keyboard were to degrade it would happen below the keys. and the keyboard is one solid piece.
and it isn't a driver issue.
I've had this issue on every single wmo device I've ever owned so try clearing, or re-flashing your rom again before you consider sending it in for repair.

hard reseted, the one that clears all the device. pressing those 2 buttons down the screen, plus the "on" button ^^ yes yes i mean hard reset hehe

haha you'd be surprised how many people confuse the two.
well I would definitely try flashing it *hint*(the sticky's are full of useful information).
If not, call up SE and set up the repair.
Ok, im just trying to flash now, ill post another time when it finishes with the result
thank you!!!
i dont know if it could be, but it seems like having the same bug, but with less % of appearing, i mean, lesser letters appear duplicated, and lesser words and spaces appear bugged too
but anyway they continue appearing... so i really dont know what happen... :'(...
more ideas?
I have the same issue. I think it's becouse of dust between letters on the keyboard Im thinking about opening device and cleaning keyboard becouse my x1 is not on warranty. But before that I want to try to clean it with compressed air in spray. It is a good cleaner for electronics so may can help but before use that remember about turning off device and taking out battery.

that's impossible.. the keyboard is like a film its one solid piece, so any dust going between letters goes no where. the only possible things are.. either condensation got stuck between the keyboard and the responsive layer below it.. that layer below it has started to break down and degrade.. or its a software issue.
how is your x1 not under warranty?
UnD, if you tried reflashing then you just have to call up SE for a repair because its a hardware issue then.
I have the same, after flashing less, but still problems. No mater is original or Fun's Rom
I had quite similar problem - space button didnt work correctly very offen and then all keys around space stoped working correctly - doubling the letters, sometimes not working at all etc.
I had it repaired in service - covered by warranty. They changed whole keyboard.
I'm having the same problem... very frustrating getting triple full stops or two 'o' letters in 'of'.
got two cracks in the case. What are the chances of a replacement do you think? still under 1 year warranty.
i have the same issue.
its caused by dirt/dust etc under the keyboard.
the only way to fix it is to take the handset apart.
best bet is to phone sony and get it repaired
I have the same issue and was wondering if it was a problem caused by:
Dust under the keys
Misalignment of the keys
Will try a hard reset and see if that helps.
I have the same issue. Tried multiple roms and stock roms and clearing the whole phone and its still the same issue. Im sending it back for repair. Warrany is 2 years =P
ive been re-flashing my ROM twice so far... empty my inbox as well, but doesnt seem to fix it, but ill try another flash again x_x
Even the Fn Button (Blue Square at corner left down) wasnt responding if i didnt press it hard enough
just cleared sms/mms now works great again
but i still will write with fingerkeyboard until i get the iphone
xperia is good but keyboard sux (should not happend) and WM is far away from the iPhone OS
also apps are better for iphone

No key responce of keyboard and frontpanel or wrong responce

Hi all,
Since a couple of weeks my X1 has the following problem.
- Key on the front do not work
-- Backlight lits up but no responce from key or wrong responce (starts dailing last number)
- keyboard no responce
-- keys lid up but no correct responce
-phone starts dailing last dailed nr automatically (phone laying on table and not touching it, it still dailes the last nr at random times)
-restarting no help.
-soft restart no help
-battery removed and wait >4 days... problem solved but returns after 3 days (give or take)
Had windows 6.1 installed at first when the problem started.
Now I have 6.5 SEX1 version installed but same problem occurred.
anybody ideas?? or even recognize the issue? could not find a simmilar issue
kind regards
Wally
Sounds like you have hardware issues. Still got yer warranty? If so, reflash orignal everything and send it back because its obviously more than a firmware problem
Hmm... sounds bad..... I have no Warrenty anymore.... does this mean my phone will slowly but surely turn into an nice brick.....
any ideas how to fix this... except buying a new one....
You could try disassembling the whole unit, and cleaning all of your contacts and ensuring that all of your connections inside are secure.
No guarantees it will help, but if you are at the point of giving it up for lost then it couldn't hurt.
Cleaned my phone today... took it appart to the last screw, cleaned it..... unfortunately no help.
Responds to the 1st button, then no responce to the following...
Well, if it's only the buttons, you could use an application like AE Button Plus to disable them alltogether. Then you can just only only the screen itself to control the phone.
Thanks for the suggestion, but that is not what I am looking for .... (yet)
I hope there is a way to fix this, hopefully somebody had the same issue and was able to solve the issue.... if not... I can always use that program then.

I've been lurking these forums for a while and I have never had, or seen reports of the problem you describe. I'm assuming you tried the search function (google) as well. If that turns up empty too, you're out of options.
Had a very similar problem when my phone got slightly wet, dropped from ear under tap when washing my hands. Problem didnt show for a few days so didnt think it was the water, but in case it was I heat soaked it by leaving it behind glass on a sunny day while charging. It got very hot but after a few treatments it was cured and has been ok for a year.
It realy was unuseable as the keyboard and all buttons were giving totaly false random responces.
Worth a try.
Yes I searched on Google as well... no help unfortunately.
Although I took my phone appart, and cleaned it so it should be dry.
I can always put in in the oven and heat is up to .. lets say 55 degr.C and leave it for an hour to bake..... need frosting on that afterwards....
tell you more tomorrow
just tried my luck using the oven.... no help.
I am out of ideas....
think I will try that buttonprogram afterall....
thanks for helping

[Q] [I9001] Problem with blackscreen while phoning

Hello guys and girls,
because of a missing "I9001-General Q&A" Board, I'm "forced" to post this here.
I have a little but anoying problem with my I9001.
I have a car-holder for my phone, to use it while driving. But it's nearly Unusable, because of my Problem.
Everytime, I receive a call, the screen went black (locked), wenn I'm answering the call, so I'm not able to activate the FreeSpeak-Mode.
I have currently installed a custom rom (cymod Version 0.4-8) and the Go Ex-Dialer, but I'm sure, that this problem has allready been there with Stock-Rom (2.3.6 KPS + KPU).
I also have had tried the "Carmode" App in the cymod. It brings the phone in the carmode (special menu, no lockscreen), I can answer the call... and the screen go's black and is locked.
Is there any way to prevent the phone from going black when phoning ?
The nearly same will happens, wenn I start a call. When I start the call, I only have 1 or 2 seconds to active the freespeak-mode, after that time the screen goes black.
It's nearly ironical: As soon as the call has endet (by the other side, because I have a locked blackscreen and unlocking don't works really good in this situation), the screen comes back to live... but to late for my freespeak-mode...
Can anyone help with this problem, is there a app or something else out there ?
Hmm, der Bildschirm wird normalerweise schwarz, wenn sich etwas dem Bildschirm nähert (also z.B. dein Ohr) durch den Näherungssensor. Wird er vielleicht in der Halterung verdeckt?
Thank you for your answer.
Also we are booth german I think, it's more confident for all other user to write english here, that are the rules here, and I think we should stay within the rules.
Back to topic.
Seems that it has been two point's together, that creates my problem.
Fist:
I don't mentioned it, but i have had used Go Dialer Ex (I like it much), and it seems, that it somehow affects the "come back to live" time of the screen (maybe in combination with the cynob-mod / FeaCore).
The second point was, that i haven't been aware, how long the I9001 needs to bring the screen back after removing it from the head (or, in other words, how slow the proximity-sensor reacts). The combination of the sluggishness of the proximity-sensor reaction and the Go Dialer Ex issue forced me to think, that there was a problem with the call-blackscreen.
After I uninstalled Go Dialer Ex, there are still 3-4 seconds idle time before the screen comes back to life after the proximity-sensor got "free" but now it's repoducible and therefor I can life with it.

Incoming call speaker problem

Hello guys!!
I'm facing a problem, when i have my htc one mini 2 on my pocket and when i receive a call, only the bottom speaker works but when i have the phone on the table the 2 speakers work... Can anyone confirm this to me if it's a phone or a software problem?

they both should work at same time no matter what.
Could be software problem but the only way to fix would be reset. You can use TWRP for backup and restore.
Add similar problem with HTC one mini (m7) and this fix it.
Already done a hard reset and still the same problem. I contacted HTC now and they told me this was a feature for this version of device. When the proximity sensor is fully covered only 1 speaker (the bottom) will work. This is ridiculous and I will return this smartphone.
LOL it's not a bug it's a feature. Never noticed that. But wasn't there something with pocket mod? when the phone is in the pocket it should ring louder and not with just 50%??

Nop... just only when i receive phone calls.... don't u have a phone there that u can call it? xP
I just tested it, but i had the impression that both speaker worked.
I covered the whole upper speaker, but the lower still ringed.
