I applied for unlocking bootloader for my Redmi 4A, using this reason:
'For flashing custom ROM'
Do you think that my request will be denied for being too honest?
This is good reason.

Yeah. I usually say something like "I am a developer working on advanced backup software and I need to unlock the bootloader to root on my device" or something like that. Anything that sounds legitmate should be fine, and I get my unlock codes pretty soon after that.
FYI, since this is the top thread when you search for "Redmi 4a XDA" on Google (not sure why) I figured I'd drop a link to the main thread for the Redmi 4a which contains all the info you need about root, bootloader unlock, custom ROMs and development: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/xiaomi-redmi-4a-chat-root-sd-425-2gb-t3511933
i did it with my redmi 3. 1st request was left unanswered. a week later i make another request with same reason as you and it got approved the next day.i think it has nothing to do with the reason, but the time and chances that they go through your request.
Chances are the request approval is automated and it looks for certain keywords to approve or dismiss. Try again with some reason as in Post #4 it might work.
Instead of custom rom, give the reason as custom recovery and something like you are very fond of customizing your device
and also root can also be a good reason. You can tell them that you are a developer or someone who likes to find fixes for issues and for that you need to complete control over the apps
I just say " I want to full control on my device" . and I get approval after 4 hours
I said that "I'm developing something"...and...you know what happens...

The most honest answer would be...
"I own it and am not locked in with any carrier obligations"
But, I'd probably be a wise guy with...
"I own it and am not locked in with any carrier obligations and, if this request is denied, please provide me with a full refund and I'll be more than happy to return it to you then provide this information and a statement to the Associated Press."
LMAO!!!

I applied to unlock my bootloader today by saying I wanted to install a customized ROM so I could tweak the phone to my specification. Got permission less than 10 minutes later.
i just fill that with
"my phone in bootloop mode, and I understand that I can only revive it by using fastboot mode without lost any data. please help me, I'm big fans of your redmi series"
maybe sounds funny, but I just got my permission a minute after submit that
just now unboxed my phone Redmi 4A (SD version-India),
want Unlock Bootloader & root with stock rom and ota safe. xD
But well, better fill out your own reason, as Xiaomi is stricting their bootloader unlock policy.

That fast now? what's your "forum rank"? I requested the permission a year ago (I had a Redmi 3) and it took me a week while still being new..
And yeah, as long it's not look 'template-y' then it's fine.

I have a sixth sense for when a device has been all but abandoned, and I am getting that feeling now. Considering they just released a huge MIUI update without the Mix, I can't say I am particularly hopeful for the future of this phone. May be time to throw it up on swappa while it's still worth something.

The "huge MIUI update" you are referring to is MIUI 8.2. If you check your device info, you'll see that the Mix is already running MIUI 8.2. This is why you didn't see the Mix in the list of updated devices.
Now, regarding the Nougat update, considering Xiaomi built a lot of hype with the Mix, it is unlikely that Xiaomi will abandon this device.
But Xiaomi has a history of abandoning some really good devices like the MiPad. So we'll never know.
Well, no, its 8.2 global. A global rom doesn't even exist for the Mix. So I consider that a huge update.
N for the mix is already in testing according to mods on the eu and official forum. Also recently saw a listing for the mi mix EVO with a qc835, plus the CEO wants to build another mix....My gut feeling is this phone isn't going anywhere and we will have N within a quarter. Remember the s7 just got N on carriers in the US this week.

You won't receive any updates as long as you're on the Vendor ROM. You need to flash to the EU ROM or one of the custom ROMs in this forum using the guides provided. The guides are quite straightforward. So you'll safely boot the ROM you want providing you follow the guides EXACTLY.
I personally prefer the Xiaomi.EU ROM and I just checked the languages available on this ROM for you. Found "Norsk Bokmal" in the list of available language options. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this is Norwegian. I am not sure though as I don't know the language.
Cheers!

Whilst in no way invalidating the examples of times when their support wasn't great, there have also been times when Xiaomi's support for their devices has been well-above-average - someone recently posted a thread on reddit detailing one such example.
So we can't read too much into previous devices as a guide for what will happen with the Mix.
These sorts of threads appear for almost every device - it doesn't matter which device or which manufacturer, they inevitably pop up. People convince themselves they know what's going to happen and, most of the time, they're wrong.
Not to mention, Xiaomi have publicly stated the Mix will be one of their devices to be updated to Nougat.
A pretty unnecessary thing to say if they're secretly planning to ignore it.

Rooting the phone is not a necessity to flash the EU ROM.. You should flash the dm-verity and forced encryption disabler patch on TWRP if you don't plan to root. Follow the guides exactly and you'll be fine.

No, you have to unlock your bootloader only and flash TWRP using fastboot. But after installing Epic you're rooted anyway. Epic is pre rooted. For unlock procedure google unlock Xiaomi for example. Best is you start here:

Mine updated to 8.2.2.0 OTA just fine soon after I got things setup [it wanted or offered the update soon after being turned on - but I needed to sort stuff out first]. Abandoned ... hardly ... having run 7 on the Honor 8 and the Mate 9 ... its not THAT huge a thing to wait for it to come along through the usual process. Give it time and be patient, phones only a few months old anyways.
Hi everyone,
A week ago I purchased a MI5. I'm on MIUI 8.1.2.0 global stable ROM.
Actually it feels like a prisoner without having root access on my device. So I need to root it ASAP.
The problem begins here. I need to unlock the boot loader first. I just heard that after MIUI 7.5 Xiaomi refuses all the unlocking request from stable ROM. Then how can I unlock my bootloader ?
Can anyone give me a tutorial of unlocking bootloader of MI5 running MIUI 8.1.2.0 Global | Stable ?
Please let me know how to get an unlocked bootloader and get me out of this prison. ??

Same case with me
for the unlock procedure start from here: http://en.miui.com/unlock/
...with a working MIUI account (on your phone) you make the request, and the waiting time will be from 1 day to xyz days.
Two advices: 1) in the "why you want to unlock" put the real reason and do not do a copy&paste because refusal from xiaomi is -in such cases- possible; 2) set up your 64bit computer with the proper drivers (windoze is a b####).
Note: Sometimes the sms will not arrive (carrier problems), so check the unlock software to see if you are good to go.
For the flashing guides and roms here: http://en.miui.com/download-299.html
And here is the english forum of the miui: http://en.miui.com/forum-92-1.html
So, while you are waiting for the approval, do a search here on xda and there on miui for the best practice to do what you need.

Can't root my Mi5
Did you manage to root your phone?
I have the exact same situation, where I managed to unlock my phone by I still don't have root. There is security app does not have the "root access" option in the "permissions" menu
I tried flashing the the latest miui global dev rom as explained here en.miui.com/thread-267361-1-1.html, but I get a "Can't verify update! You're allowed to flash the newest develop version published by miui from stable version only" message.
I was on custom non miui based ROM and while signing up on miui forum app(wanted to sign up for miui 10 beta) I messed up the username. Someone suggested the only solution being delete mi account and create new one. I did that and everything worked good.
Problem got known when I tried installing miui based ROM. As soon as the screen boots, it ask for password of mi account which I have deleted earlier. I know the password but it won't work as account don't exist.
I tried getting support from mi support but they said only available solution is to go to service centre but is far from my place.
I have tried the following things:
Reverting back to miui 8 (as miui 7 is not available), this way I can access the miui ROM but still can't change mi account.
I have not yet tried mi tools available as they were not tested on mi max 2 and I am afraid it might hard brick my device.
If anyone have ever faced any such issue and found some solution, please share any info. Possible.
Note: My device is not unusable as I can install all non miui based roms but still this happened at the time of release of miui 10 which I cannot try anymore.
Please try to provide a solution that won't have the risk of hard bricking the device as this is the only device that I own.
Thanks in advance.
Try creating the same username and see if you can access the phone again on MIUI.

Well, sorry to say but it won't work. It won't let pass the screen of login and account is not just connected to aim but linked with device as well. Even after removing aim and trying to boot, the screen to login with existing account popped up.

Sorry for the late reply. But it turns out it didn't work. Even after able to access Miui, the mi account and mi cloud force close keeps popping up every now on them.
Also the moment you restart either your device will go into bootloop or the log in to mi account will pop up again.
Which implies only solution is the official one i.e
1. To mail contact customer support and mail them whatever details they ask(screenshot attached), this one is free.
Note:
-This will take 4-5 days approx.
-Dont just mail to support at your own country. Rather mail to atleast 3,4 countries.
(3 of them replied copy paste unasked info. Whereas Malaysia and Singapore customer support understood my query and asked for further info as in screenshot)
-You can contact them from here:
https://www.mi.com/en/support/contact/
2. To take your mobile to nearby Xiaomi service centre(they need a copy of your identity and address proof plus a copy of your purchase invoice, they will charge a specified fee for it(180 Indian Rupees in my case)
Note:
-This one will take 2-3 days approx.
(Remember to backup and erase your data before handing it over)
-This solution won't always work as sometimes even the support centre don't know how to deal with this issue and they will try factory reset only. If it didn't work for you always remember to go back to first option.
Hope this helps.
Just to let you know I am still awaiting reply from Malaysian Xiaomi support centre. Also romfactory has talked to few of his friends who work in mi support so my problem will be solved in some time.
Screenshot details asked by xiaomi

Hi guys, got my ultra few weeks ago...I've seen loads of updates to the 12.5 and I saw that European version has already a stable 12.5. my question is, as I'm on a RKAEUVF, did someone try to upgrade to the RKAEUXM? And if so, did you needed to unlock the bootloader or was it just a simple upgrade? Thanks guys
If you can`t wait, till the upgrade, you need to unlock the bootloader...
I`m in same situation...
Omg you are funny. Just unlock this bootlader and do it. Are you 5?

There is a a lot ot thread here, just read (if not too hard) than, every asnwer here, or on the xiaomi EU forum if not enough what you find here...
Without unlocking he can`t change the rom from **VF to **XM... But good luck, maybe you know better.

Thank you @Mr Reese. Even though I could unlock the bootloader, some people can't understand that the reason I don't so it is because my bank is an online bank without an actual website. If I can't have the app working, I simply can't access my account. Ive been using custom ROMs for over a decade now, I know the pros and the cons, and unfortunately the app security is quite good and blocks me out as soon as I have an unlocked bootloader. I had the same issue with the beta version of Android on my pixel. So I rather not put myself through that work. Hence the question.
