Disabling system apps & OTA updates - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Let's say I disabled a few system apps through Adhell 3. Each time there is an official OTA update, do I have to restore those system apps first before updating? Or can I just update without doing this?

You can update without having to re-enable them.

why disable them in the first place if u are still going to update?

I disabled both SYSTEM UPDATES apps, using AdHell 3.1, on my Verizon Note 9, hoping to prevent Pie update.

I've taken updates w/system apps disabled natively/via a package disabler & uninstalled via ADB on other devices w/o incident.
However, most of the package disabling apps recommend re-enabling apps before taking the update & then disable again afterwards.
I'd be lyin' if I said whether it matters or not,or,at a greater risk of bugs/etc..... w/apps disabled.
However, since it's so easy to re-enable & disable again after taking the update, that's what I'd do & it would eliminate one possible culprit for bug troubleshooting, should such arise after taking the update.

Well, I updated to Pie a few weeks ago without re-enabling the many apps I disabled. The update was done without any problems.

I would not recommend disabling apps on samsung phones in nougat, oreo, pie - found it can and most likely if aggressive - will, lead to battery drains and other problems, some performance wise. A lot of services/processes are tied together and when you disable something on the chain - other processes loops trying to "talk" with the disabled one. Also the nougat and up is great to put to sleep what is not used in days, so the battery life will vastly improve after a few weeks of use.

Yep, but full new android update is not equal to incremental update.
While I think it's better to not disable anything in the last 3 android versions on samsung flagships, should not cause any problems with the OTA atleast.

[Q] stop att software update

Device manager is downloading some att software update. Im assuming it will mess up my phones root and xposed settings. Is there a way to stop it by disabling the function in Titanium Backup? Or should i let it happen? Ive already disabled the push security updates (security policy spd_v2_1402) btw.

Use tibu to freeze these system apps: AT&T update; Samsung Push Services; localfota and security policies.
That should stop the updates. If you update it breaks root.

[Q] Diable 5.1 update on rooted Pure?

I have a rooted stock ROM Pure and I want to avoid the 5.1 update for a couple of reasons.
Does anyone know how to disable the update process on these devices?

Disable MotorolaOTA in the system apps in settings. If you're rooted, you can freeze it in the /system folder using Titanium or whatever else you use. Safest thing to do is to rename it with a .bak at the end, then when you're ready to update you just remove it and reboot.

Thanks for the reply. I froze it with Ti Backup, but I'm still able to check for updates manually and it reports normally.
Shouldn't that function be disabled if the OTA apparatus is truly disabled?
I do see in firewall a process called 'Device Management that I thought I could block MotorolaOTA from communicating, but there are other functions bundled, so I don;t want to do that.
Ideas, anyone?

Motorola will still be able to be communicated to, but the OTA function will be disabled, eg. no OTA will be detected. It is my understanding that blocking MororolaOTA just keeps the notification from appearing and prevents OTA downloads.

Thanks again - that makes sense. I'll see the rollout on my stock Pure (if I still have it and decide not to sell it) and be able to compare in real-time if it does the trick.

Will I lose Google Play if it updates?

I bought this for my mom and I was wondering if the tablet did regular updates, would it lose google play? What would an OTA take out other than root?
I'm currently on 5.1.1(got mine the day the update was released and updated without knowing) and I was able to install google play and services and haven't had any problems with either. As far as OTA updates, I doubt it will prevent it from working but can't say for sure because we don't know what Amazon will do.

Others have mentioned that the Amazon updates are full images, so I would speculate that if you had root and installed to system it would probably be wiped out. If you used the script, it just installs like a regular app and should be retained through an OTA like all the other apps. That's not to say that an OS change couldn't cause the frameworks or app to crash\stop functioning.
Didn't some others say they couldn't install Play store completely on 5.1.1 ?

The current update may not break google play but at any time in the future a update may come out that does indeed break it. Why risk it? Just disable OTA.
It seems a bunch of people got screwed because they failed to kill OTA & got hit by 5.1.1. It's just foolish to leave OTA enabled. You can always apply a new update manually or even temporarily re-enable OTA if a new update proves safe & you want it.

This. Completely automatic updates are for the elderly that have to call their children to be reminded how to cut/paste in Excel.

The Google Play script from 5.0.1 works just the same in 5.1.1 without issue.

Is there a way to stop Software Update on stock firmware?

The last time we got an update I had to say remind me later multiple times...eventually I went to sleep just to wake up and find out my phone was updated without my permission.

You can disable it with BK disabler.
Have you tried This? What services would I need to disable?

Using it now.
Just go to the system tab and disable the blue coloured software update with BK disabler. Done.
Can't find a link to the app.
Is there a way to manually do it through settings?
uncheck Developers Options - Autoupdate system.

Yeah me neither lol. Just disable options through settings -> software update. It might still eventually push updates after a while though. Long-term you can disable Software update with Titanium Backup if rooted, or else use BK Package Disabler as described earlier.
what if you enable them back but when checking for a software update it just says "up to date", i am running the Nov 1st security patch, have had updates disabled since i use Sub overlays and have a custom ui, just tonight i went and u installed everything bcuz i heard there was a security patch out that was needed n order to get Oreo later this month..i know for a fact my phone isnt up to date.
anyone know what is going on??
my provider is AT&T, any help would b appreciated.
btw..i am NOT rooted or running any custom roms.
Just use bk disabler, disable everything related to software updates, this prevents even the forced updates that sometimes samsung or carriers push, when you re enable all, if there is some update, yo will be able to install it
yeah, using the app is no problem..it's when i enable the updates again thru BK my phone is saying its up to date and i know for a fact it is like 4 security patches behind..i have no idea how to fix it.
i enabled all apps including the update ones, uninstalled BK also.

You are just awesome, pretty and simple. Thank you so much.
For those who do not understand you need activate Developers Options (google it)
Then in Developers Option, uncheck Auto Update System.
I have had this checked from the start and still get update notifications?

How to stop ota update

I am buying a unlocked note8. And I require root as a lot of my apps require it.... and it’s my understanding that I am going to need to stop the ota update in order to achieve root.
Can someone please tell me how to stop the ota update so I can root the device.
Hello,
Curious if are you going to run a custom rom or root and remove apps you don't want?

Which model do you have? Snapdragon?
Generally you can disable the software update using a Package Disabler from the Play Store, or freeze it using Titanium Backup once rooted. Simply turning off the update option in Settings will not work long-term, as it would eventually update anyways. That's why you need to disable or freeze it.
In developers options you can also turn off auto update system. Usually after you root OTA updates won't function anymore anyway after the device status changes to custom. Or does that not apply for US Snapdragons & SamFail?
Can I temporarily disable it just long enough so I can root. Via samfail
Yes, just go in settings - software updates, there change to download updates manually... Job done: nothing will be updated unless you initiate it yourself...
Can update be stopped without root?
Most package disablers are not working, dev option not working.
Have gone back to oreo from pie don't want be forced back onto pie.
I have a rooted Galaxy s10+ with android pie. Doesn't freezing "Software Update" system apps of my android by Titanium Backup make booting problems for my device? Is it safe for me to freeze those apps? I ask because I've heard freezing some system apps like "Device Care" stops the device from booting. As other fellas I get ota update notifications and I wanna get rid of them by freezing those apps.

I am disabling apps with a package disabler for them to still keep updating! So I have gone back to the method of disabling apps via ADB (no root needed this way)
It uninstalls it for the current user, but a factory reset will bring the app back if so needed. You can uninstall the update app with this method, or any other app for that matter. (Just be careful with what you disable)
