Just curious, for those that purchased the unlocked USA SD version for use on a USA carrier. How are you finding your phone signal strength?
Using LTE Discovery app it appears my old Note 8( T-Mobile unlocked version) got an ever so slightly better signal dBm wise compared to my current Note 9 unlocked model/firmware both on Sprint.
My home location averages at best -100dBm to worst -115dBm currently , about the same as the note 8 did. However, looking at the gsam cell signal graph it appears more unstable than the note 8 did. Attached two pictures. First one is my unlocked note 9 and the smoother graph second image is wife's unlocked T-Mobile note 8 same place in home.View attachment 4591488

It's about the same as well if I view the dBm ( maybe a hair less) via LTE Discovery app and also the phone Sim status page. However, GSAM chart is all over the place for the note 9. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it.
Sent from my SM-N960U1 using Tapatalk
Yeah. You're reading too much into it, especially being on Sprint. There's going to be slight variation on dBm no matter what depending on many conditions. Start kicking T-Mobile around to get Sprint off it's butt and do something with it's network.

Thanks , thought so.
I just did another comparison side by side using LTE Discovery, it shows almost exact signal between the wife's note 8 and my note 9. However the chart on gsam for signal looks a bit awkward for the note 9.

Wallpapers? Did it come out well? I took pictures of my 65x monitor. Those aren't screenshots. ?
I have unlocked version and am on tmobile. Recent switched from s8. Signal is the same but download/upload speeds are better with note 9.
S8 had on average .50mbps dl whereas note 9 gets an average of about 2.5 mbps dl. UL speeds have increased as well.
Though the s8 was on original fw, so that may have something to do with it.

I'm getting excellent signal. In comparison to my s9+ (tmobile variant) signal is the same, but hard to tell since this says LTE+ and the tmobile variant doesn't show that option. I think it may be better than when I had my note 8

It's a know fact that the branded carrier versions will show "more bars" in the status bar compared to the same model unlocked version. The real dBm signal measured for example by LTE Discovery app is the same however for both versions.
I believe carriers like to make their customers and themselves feel warm and fuzzy inside by having the manufacturers show more bars, marketing.
My original post was comparing dBm between a note 8 and note 9 via an app called LTE Discovery. In the end they were both near identical after further tests.

I thought this was kind of interesting...
I bought my Nexus 5 from Tmobile (north america), found out that I have very little (read: zero) coverage between my home and work, so I had to cancel. I went ahead and paid off the N5 and switched to AT&T.
Oddly enough, the myAT&T screen shows me as having a LG 821, which, I believe, is the international version!
I found that concerning as I thought Tmobile might have worked better for me if I had the correct phone... but my bootloader shows D820.
Anyone else have the same quark on their myAT&T page?

Funny - never noticed this before either, but AT&T reports mine as the 821 also.
I have the 820 model.

My wife and I both have Nexus 5's on at&t. I bought her's from google and mine from tmobile. Ours both show 821 too, but they are 820's. If they were 821's, you would have no LTE. Im in atlanta with lte everywhere.
LG 821 too, bought it from the Google store. I can use the wap.cingular apn only. No LTE for me.
LG821 here as well. I have LTE using attphone APN. I had a Galaxy S4 (LTE) before it, just kept that plan so it all works. Have to have had a LTE capable phone before you get the N5 for it to work properly with your plan to access LTE>

Do any of you get throttled on AT&T with the Nexus 5? I have the Galaxy Nexus, but a cracked screen and now water damage is making me purchase a new phone, and I have yet to be throttled while regularly using over 5G/month.
Thanks!
You only get throttled (or more accurately, your usage is only metered in the throttling system) when using PHONE or PTA apn. Using a galaxy nexus without lte, you're most likely on wap.cingular (which you can do on a phone with no lte). Once their system detects you're imei and determines you have an lte capable device, you're blocked from using wap.cingular, and this your usage will be monitored (as you'll need to use phone or pta). I can trick the system by putting my sim in my old non lte GS2 (i9100), doing "restore apns" then sim swapping back to my nexus 5. THEN I can use wap.cingular, but unfortunately after a day or two they do an imei sweep and I get locked out again On the bright side tmo just announced they'll be eliminating edge and upgrading everything to lte by 2015 so I'm looking forward to dumping ATT very soon.

No throttle. On 6gb family share plan now. I can get over 50mbit/s in SpeedTest with full LTE signal. 95% of the time I'm on WiFi so to boot LTE speeds don't really matter. My data usage last month was a whole 500mb.
Not sure if the International has a different structure for the ESN/IMEI but its quite possible the 821 is what they have in their system as the Nexus 5. They do have traveling customers on the device but more likely prepaid customers. Interesting one indeed.

He's asking about the UNLIMITED plan being throttled I'm sure, and yes it will after 5gb, unless you're on the wap.cingular apn as I described above.
I should mention that the Nexus 4 will NOT be blocked from wap.cingular as it does not have LTE, so if true unlimited data is that important maybe the Nexus 4 might be a better choice.

ATT sent me a message saying I would be throttled at 3GB even though I have "unlimited data", and being throttled sucks, its awful.

Should be 5gb on an LTE device. I'd call in with your imei to get put on an LTE unlimited plan if you're not already (hspa plans throttle after 3gb.). Note that you don't need to be on LTE or even have an LTE device, you just need any att compatible imei to give them so you're on the right plan.

How Do I Check The Model Number?
Hi,
Bought my phone from Google Play. How do I check the model number other then the boot loader?
I checked in 'About Phone', can't find it.
Edit. XDA really has to stop ads from playing with audio with while on the site, drives me nuts.
I tried to use the phone on PTA or Phone APN but it only accepts wap.cingular, because I switched from a 3G phone. The CS rep said my plan is not compatible with LTE, and nothing can be done. I am stuck with HSPA. Oh well, the plus side, I am not throttled.

This is true in some cases. It depends on the person that sets your phone up. Search. When they provision the phone, some AT&T workers, since the Nexus 5 is officially not in their provisioning software, have to select a generic template. If they are smart and do the right thing, you get set up with a LTE capable provisioning for your phone that works perfect. Some however don't know what they are doing and set the phone up with a plan that cannot access 3G for whatever reason. It completely depends on the person provisioning your phone. With phones that are in AT&T's system that might be unlocked but are in their system, such as Galaxy S4 Google Edition or something, it works no problem since the S4 is in their system. However with "oddball" phones like ours that AT&T doesn't officially support you run into issues as some workers may not know how to handle them.
So I'm new to tmobile (3rd day on the network), I'm coming from verizon. I'm trying to figure out why in my home I get miserable LTE speeds, despite having full LTE signal. Just down the road I get speeds close to 60 down so I know this isn't standard speeds...
I'm in Columbus, Ohio. Still well within my 14 day trial so I'm putting my phone to the test to make sure I really want to stay with tmobile. I should note that I didn't have consistent LTE, especially not full signal, until I installed the LTE signal booster.

Also came from verizon (was a vzw corp employee for 10 yrs in phx) and switched to t-mo, at home i get full LTE bars, but speeds remain slower than AWS speeds we keep seeing in atlanta and NYC from t-mo.
I get 12, the best i ever got was 22mbps
Tforce is looking into my issue. I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with my local tower. It doesn't matter if I'm inside or out, I can have full lte signal and get speeds ranging from .50 to 5. Really frustrating but even if I don't see improved speeds I'll probably stick with them, I miss unlimited data that much.

A signal Booster will not give you faster speeds, and having full signal does not necessarily mean you should be getting high speeds.

Reception. It can help with calls, but higher signal does not mean better data speeds. I've been able to put over 20 down with 1 or 2 bars. Then only 8 with 3-5 bars. There's more to it. T-mobile can look into it and see if there are other factors involved. Also make sure you are on latest firmware

I understand that but .50 mbps download speed, sometimes less, with ANY LTE signal, isn't acceptable. If that's the towers speed of LTE then they might as well drop that signal and let me run off 4g.

Right there's no doubt something is wrong, just saying that bars won't make a difference. You can run off 4g if you select it, is your speed better?

It's sometimes better, sometimes right around the same speed. It's so weird because every once in a while I'll actually get decent lte speeds.. Although it's very rare... For now I have just given up worrying about it until I hear from tforce, my WiFi is more than fast enough (what I was using with Verizon anyway since I didn't have unlimited). I just would like to stay on lte at all times, just a preference of mine. I work today, first time since switching over, so hopefully I don't have issues there and I'll probably stay with T-Mobile. As long as calls work at home I can live with running off my WiFi.

Signal bars nowadays don't necessarily mean that's the Data strength. That would be your voice signal strength on that particular device no longer meaning that is the signal strength for that data type.

I'm actually beginning to wonder if it's the phone. I was at a local chipotle and tested inside the store and was getting the dreaded .10.. I restarted and tested again and was getting 50mbps.. Pretty significant difference needless to say lol.

Can you guys tell me the pros of moving to t-mobile vs sticking with verizon? My main motivation is the fact that Verizon keeps selling locked bootloader phones so I can't ever mod them. Seriously frustrating. Is it true that all of t-mobiles phones are unlockable or already come unlocked? Also what are the average LTE speeds you guys see when doing speed tests on the tmobile network?

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile myself, and am totally glad I did.
Pros:
- cheaper
- offers an unlimited data plan, free international 3G data and texting (invaluable service when you travel; I've taken advantage of this too many times), many music/video streaming services don't count against your data bucket (if you don't have unlimited)
- no contracts
- the Jump/upgrade program is pretty good if you switch phones regularly
- phones can be unlocked at anytime, as long as you have paid off your phone
Cons
- I travel quite a bit, and have found that their coverage isn't consistent in rural areas (urban cities are mostly fine though)
- S6 still hasn't received the Marshmallow update (though with Verizon updates took just as long), so software updates are slow
- speeds are not as fast as Verizon, I usually average 10% slower than when I was on Verizon (personally it doesn't feel significantly slower to be annoying)
Switched couple months ago and couldn't be happier. For what I was paying verizon for a locked phone for myself I get two unlocked phones for myself and the little lady with tmobile. with binge on and free streaming music I barely have any other data use 2.1gig last month. my average for the music alone is 8gig and that doesn't count anymore . And i get better signal at home ! Verizon unusable in my house tmobile is better plus can use wifi calling so now thinking can finally drop landline.
Switch as quickly as you can and don't look back

I live in a brick and stucko house. No one gets great service in the house regardless of provider.
T-Mobile's service is much better with a band 12 phone, like the S6. I was amazed by the significant reception improvement over my S4 (non-band 12). Even T-Mobile's old band 4 LTE signal is much better on the S6. I work in the center of an office building (1950's building with brick, stucko, and asbestos ) and I get amazing LTE reception with my S6, whereas my S4 got no reception.
Stick with Verizon if you travel a lot or are in rural areas. I live near Los Angeles, so reception is not a problem.

T-Mobile's connection and speeds aren't always reliable. I think Verizon is way better and you should stick with them if you had the money because I know I would. I'm going to go stock anyways because I want MM (no roms for that on S6 T-mo yet) and Samsung pay. Plus, some roms have apps that work a little differently (not a deal breaker, but annoying for me) and I cannot pickup calls sometimes (deal breaker, very frustrating).
I absolutely love tmobile. I like what the company is doing and most importantly there customer service. At one point a better service plan came out that was cheaper but still all of the same features... and they had zero issues switching it over. What company does that? Most will say its only avaliable to new customers.. not tmobile. Yes service can be limited in some area but they are still in the middle of switching off old 2g and replacing it with LTE. Major improvements in the past 6months. That all said no other carrier can match tmobile speeds at my home or work.

I have a N950F from Clove (UK) all is well about the bootloader but now I face another issue.
The LTE speeds are all wack. When I compare with a Note 5 in the same location I get 40mbps slower.
Like right now my Note 5 is pulling 60 mbps in multiple tests while my Note 8 is doing 20-25 mbps
I am also seeing that the dBA of the LTE connection is somewhere around 7-15 dBA lower on the Note 8.
The note 5 is about -85 to -90dBA while the Note 8 is -96 dBA to -106dBA in the same exact spot.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any one have any ideas?
Kalm Traveler had similar issue , his was his radio antenna issue.

Damn 40mbps slower. I'm lucky if I get even that at home. LTE sucks where I live, I live in the hills.
I also have N950F from Clove. My Note 8 only shows 1 bar at home & my Note 5 would get like 3, that doesn't mean much to me though. My Note 8 is slighty faster than my Note 5 or the same, never significantly worse. On a good day at home I get 35-40 but usually it's around 25. My Note 5 at home never got better than 25. Just down the hill I'll get 65 on my Note 8 & 50 on my Note 5. I keep forgetti g to run a speed test when I'm in an area with better LTE coverage.
I do have Kalm Traveler's TMO mod installed but I don't think it makes a difference in speed, speeds were the same with the Note 8 out the box stock. I do have to turn off volte when I'm in my area though, keep getting dropped calls when it's on. Same on my Note 5 when volte came out.
What's your LTE signal strength?

Similar when you look at the bars but the dBA is different. The note 5 hovers around -85dBA to -90dBA, while the Note 8 stays around -96 dBA to -106dBA
interesting that two diff region unlocked devices from two diff regions and model #'s are having similar issues

Just got back from the store, this is what I got for signal strength on my Note 8....
At almost full bars, I got -65dBm to -75dBm. Around half bars I got in the -90s. At home where I get only 1 bar I get -110s. So I'm confident my Note 8 isn't having any reception issues.
I don't have another sim to use in my Note 5 so I can't compare side by side but maybe I'll take my Note 5 out & see what I get with it. I've never checked signal strength on it other than at home. But even though, comparing the Note 8 to the Note 5 or any other different model is not a fair comparison. Hardware, antenna placement, as well as the case will have affect on it all. It'll only tell you how well they designed it in comparison. Best to compare with another Note 8 in the same area.

Yup, N950F from Clove UK running on Tmobile USA.
Same here. Very slow LTE on my N950F (UK/Clove).. Gotta find a way fix it.
I reflowed the usb / antenna board tonight but it made no difference at all. I think my board is just a lemon.

I dont think its the board.
I think its software related, or simply the way the exynos version is.
I hear the modem is better on with Snapdragon.
I might try and flash some FW from a different region.
UK hasnt been updated yet but some other regions have.

Might be in your case, but I had crazy fast LTE for the first 4-5 days. Also, I'm sure mine is the board (or a component on it) because unplugging the antenna wires from it makes zero difference to the signal strength.

NMF26X.N950FXXU1AQI1 & N950FXXU1AQHB.
Just curious, those of you having this issue on TMO, what band are you usually connected to?
Could someone please tell me the CSC that comes on the Clove model?

Well also the amount of people that are having problems and the same exact problem leads me to believe this is the case.
I have had times where my LTE was on point too, there are alot of variables.

usually band 4, but it varies around my area between 2, 4, and 12. My Note 5 in the same areas switches to the same bands as the Note 8.

I used the T-Mobile mod thing to get wifi calling and now my CSC reads TMB
What is the one that comes out of the box from Clove?
Forgive me if this should be in the T-Mobile or AT&T forum for the phone.
I bought a used note 8 that was an AT&T variant. I was on cricket, I inserted my sim card and it worked fine, however I should have called AT&T to see if this could be unlocked....because they wouldn't unlock it.
I used an unlocking company on the web and it works now, but I'm traveling places where this phone should work , mostly rural, and it isnt.
Tmobile hasn't been of much help . I've read on Reddit a suggestion to flash the Tmobile software to the phone to get full functionality on their network. I've also read it will never be possible to achieve that without a Tmobile Note8 or unlocked version.
Can anyone comment on this, is this necessary?

Yes, I am using T mobile now. It did change some parts of the software, for instance when I Reboot, you will get the t-mobile symbol on the screen for just a half second and the T-Mobile jingle, then the pattern unlock will show.

Right. I'm traveling with a work phone and Tmobile website shows towns where I should have signal. I was getting mostly band 12 in those rural areas. I dont know much about tmobile bands and frequencies but I'm trying to determine if there's bands this phone won't pick up. I've also picked up bands 2,3,4.
When I wasn't getting a signal or a signal I could use- it appeared I always had bars,probably AT&T.

Were the apn settings set correctly if it did them by itself? My AT&T note 8 doesn't get AT&T service where AT&T says I should. The maps are often times lying. I live out of town a little ways(roughly 10 minutes out) and the map says 4g but I get 1 bar of 4g at less than 3g speeds. And I'm in the middle of the color coat. Also our phones have the same bands as all the other games models and even American cdma models I believe. The AT&T varient supports T-Mobiles 600mhz as well. From what I was told.
U models should all be the same hardware wise, they should all support the frequencies used by US carriers. That's the reason why they changed to U models, for compatibility, all that's different is the firmware. Gone are the days when each US carrier had their own models, ie T (TMB), A (ATT), V (VWZ), P (SPR). Best to flash carrier's firmware. Many people buy or flash unlocked variants/firmware because of less bloat but you may loose specific carrier features that you can't enable without root.
For T-Mobile, bands are 2, 4, 12, & 71 but Note 8s do not support the new 71 band. T-Mobile is also said to use 66 which the Note 8 supports but I have never seen my phone connect to B66 though. But I have a F on T-Mobile. B66 said is said to be an extension of B4.
In my area B4 is the main band I'm connected to & is the fastest. B12 is usually second & in areas with less cell density where reception is not a good or inside buildings as it's a lower frequency & penetrates walls better (sort of like what B71 is for). B12 is usually slow for me. I've never seen my phone connected to B2 though. I have seen B31 pop up when CA is active but that doesn't make sense since T-Mobile does use B31.
Thanks! I don't do this much, where's the latest firmware?

Yes actually and please dont use that app lol, use servicemode *#0011# to change bands type in *#2263# there you can change bands on T-Mobile. On AT&T you have to eject the sim and reboot the phone then type that code in lol.

Sort of. In the Service Menu you can set preferred bands & you can also disable bands. I don't recommending disabling bands as there really is no point. You can try setting specific bands as preferred but in my experience it's best to just leave it on automatic (stock). Even if you set a specific band as preferred you won't connect to it if it's not available in a certain area anyway.
Don't know if the service menus are the same for Snapdragon but on Exynos it's *#2263# (enter it in the stock Samsung Dialer).
Again best bet is to flash T-Mobile firmware, that way you'll get the correct CA combos (carrier aggregation) & other features like VoLTE, Wifi Calling, etc., then debloat if desired.
Also forget LTE Discovery, Network Cell Info is much better.
Thanks for all the tips, I think I will try this tonight. I do have a total conspiracy theory though....I would swear that today (again traveled in an area where it lost service but the Network Cell Info app showed I was picking up a strong signal on ATT, I think band 3) ...I turned roaming off and it seemed i haven't had any issue since.

Okay, I have flashed the phone using firmware I downloaded off of SamFirm, see attached. Phone seems no different, but I haven't traveled yet. Some debate I keep reading in forums as to if this is even necessary.
Very frustrating to be pulling in AT&T signal on phone in areas where I know I should be getting TMobile.

Update: I've traveled 1500 moles all over the state this week and I've backtracked the issue to be this phone will not pick up Tmobiles 700mhz network.
If you look at the app from TMobile called BYOD, you put in your IMEI and it straight up tells you (or at least me) that arent going to get it.
Lots of wasted time this week. Wish we would have known this before I started service.

Well that's weird... Band 12 looks to be enabled....why dont you try locking to only Band 12 and see what happens. Also I could find out if T-Mobile owns Band 12 spectrum in your market if you tell me what that is.
