Edge Lighting notification issue on lockscreen - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I've just switched to a note9 from a note8 and I've noticed something different. I've got Edge Lighting set to "Always" and notification content to show on lockscreen. I have a macro which turns screen on when certain notifications are received. On my note8 it meant that I'd see the special notification UI where it shows the message icon which expands with the notification content inside it. But on the note9 it only shows a small icon and doesn't expand.
Is this happening for everyone else?

[Q] Showing date on Active Display?

Although it shows time, is there a way to show date as well? Or some other method/app?
Thanks!
Not natively. You could use Tasker to post a notification when the screen turns off with the date, then clear the notification when the screen turns back on.
The issue with this is that you would either only see it when there are no other notifications waiting (Active Display "features" the most recent notification up top, and lists others below), or you could set the priority on the date notification to the highest level, which would force it to always be the "featured" notification on Active Display. This would essentially defeat the point of Active Display though, because all other notifications would be forced into the lower portion and not accessible via AD.

Lock screen notification

Hi, is there any way to control what notifications appear on the lock screen? It's now either show or don't show at all (without a password).
Basically what I'd like is for notifications icons to still show on the lock screen status bar, but not show the notifications on the lock screen itself. I used to be able to do this on Kitkat.
On that note, any way to add lockscreen widgets?
Thanks.
Anyone?
Do you want to hide the notification information? You can check the option for "hide sensitive notification content" and it will just show the application name. I don't know how the phone decides what is sensitive, but you can also block notification content on a per-app basis. The results would look like the image below. The lockscreen statusbar is not meant to hold notifications. You can change the lockscreen to something else, but widgets seem to have vanished.

Persistent notifications on lock screen and AOD

I never noticed this on my S7E but now with Note 8 I get a persistent notification of Android system VPN and messenger bubble is active. I manage to make peace with it always being in notification tray but why now it's on my lock screen and AOD? This is just plain stupid.
Unlock phone swipe down the notification panel, then press and hold the notification and an option box will come up where you can "silence" the notification so it doesn't show anymore

Just go to Settings - Lock Screen and Security, then uncheck the option under the Lock Screen and Always On Display section where it says Notifications. That got rid of all notifications on the AOD and Lock Screen for me, and I have a VPN on all the time.
I know that, I don't want to remove it. By default at least on s7 edge all perssitant notifications where not showed on AOD. On NOTE 8 i see them on AOD ?

I have a S9+. I would like to have notification on my AOD, but not the Persistent ones. Any way to do that.

Edge lighting not working

Hi,
just received my first Samsung yesterday and wanted to get the Edge Lighting working.
I enabled in the settings and also all needed apps like Telegram and Whatsapp are enabled inside the Edge Lighting settings.
Somehow this never works, with screen on or off. There's no lighting when a notification pops in from the enabled apps.
Is there any fix for this? I miss the notification light from my old P10 a lot and this seems to be the only way to have something in this direction on the S10, at the moment.
Before I've got the phone I was hoping Samsung enabled a notification ring around the camera.
Greetings,
Jannomag

Same thing here. Edge notifications not working at all.
---------- Post added at 08:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:31 PM ----------
Just checked and it does work when I get an SMS, but not when I get an email. And Gmail is activated as one of the apps that should light up the edge notifications.
Not working for me either
Edge Lighting has always had an issue with some apps with the screen off. You need to change Whatsapp settings to Settings > Notifications > Popup Notifications > When Screen off.
Same for any other app it's not working for with the screen off. It needs to have a setting enabled for "popup" or something along those lines.
Iam having the same issue. It will work if you select the popup notification within the app to 'when screen is off' but then the message is also displayed in a popup on the lock screen which i don't want! How hard can it be to want the edge to light up and for the notification contents to remain private.
I had the same thing with my S9, but if you read carefully in display > edge screen > edge lighting > show edge lighting > while screen if off, it says that it replaces notifications that "turn the screen on", and since whatsApp doesn't do this by default, you'll have to turn on pop up view. But here's the thing, I never thought of this solution before, I just installed "glimpse notifications" from play store, it basically lights up the screen if you receive any notification, I personally ignored all apps except for whatsApp, and made sure I enabled persistent notifications to dismiss battery optimizations, keep LED notifications to make it continue blinking, and delay screen-on to allow the notification sound to be fully played, all these can be found under "extras" in the app menu, they'll suggest you to do so as soon as you open the app, and Voil

Jannomag, you very possibly have seen this by now but, if not you might take a look at Chainfire's Holey Light app. Thread with info and link to Play Store listing is right here in S10 forum in Themes, Apps and Mods. It is a good third party answer to your wish for notification light around front facing camera.
I have similar issue with native Samsung Email v6.1.12. All other apps show Edge Lighting, but for native email using gmail / private / work account, no lighting for me. All notifications sound and vision are enabled.

How to change whatsapp preview message on lock screen?

Hi all,
I bought a Xiaomi 9 SE a while back, coming from iPhone. I was under the impression that everything was tweakable with android, but i can't figure out how to adjust the pop-up notifications from whatsapp in any way. Currently whenever i receive a whatsapp message my screen turns on and shows a huge rectangle in the middle of the screen showing the message with two buttons beneath it reading "reply" and "close". Then i can scroll to the right and left, showing the next message and previous messages in case i received more than one. This sucks for a number of reasons.
The rectangle looks like it was invented in 1999. It is so obnoxious; huge, ugly with no way around it. It stays on your lock screen blocking everything else until you've closed it manually. When i (feel forced to) close the preview screen (because i want to use my phone for another purpose) there is no way of retrieving the previews of the messages, i have to open the app instead.
The time stamps are missing. I have to figure out the chronology of messages myself by looking at the number in the upper right corner (1 of 13, 2 of 13 etc.) but even then i don't know if the message was sent an hour ago or a minute ago (and even then, i don't know if message 13 was the last one or message 1). Besides, this 'scrolling' to the left and right is so time consuming and unclear compared to being able to look at all messages beneath one another with the first one at the top and the last one at the bottom in one quick view (as with my old iphone).
Phone companies are always nagging about protecting privacy and therefor not showing the content of preview messages of whatsapp, i never understood this when i was on iphone and the previewed messages were subtle, vague and small - with the longer messages needing to be expanded by a swipe down with the finger to fully view (in case of texts longer than a couple of words). But now i get it, these android preview messages light up the screen in a way you can not NOT look at it and the content of the messages is right there in the middle to read for everyone. Also with iPhone i remember the screen would only light up with the first message you received from someone and have some sort of cooldown timer on it before the screen turned on again, with my xiaomi every message someone sends makes the screen light up. In case of people who send a lot of messages in a row (instead of making 1 long message) that means the phone screen in turned on for minutes on end, super annoying and distracting.
Am i totally missing something or is this just the way whatsapp preview messages work with android? Is there any option somewhere hidden to change the form of the whatsapp preview messages to something less obnoxious? Or any third party app for that matter, as this is driving me crazy.
I have MIUI 11 since a day or two now, and was hoping this would change things, but so far i haven't figured it out.
Thanks in advance all!
Yes there is. Just disable the so called toast messages. And you can also disable lock screen messages. And of course disable whatsapp message notification at all!
For the first thing. Whatsapp>settings>notifications>use high priority notifications
For the second check your android AND launcher specific lockscreen settings.
For the third option check the App permissions. or just modify the appearance of the message the time it is there. Grab it left or right and then hit the settings gear for notification display permission (I hope it is called like this).

hi, thanks for the answer. I think this does not solve my issue if i understand everything correctly. To be clear: i WANT notifications on my lock screen, just not in the form of the idiotic big rectangle. I want the more subtle, smaller, elongated 'balloons'. Strangly enough when i press "close" on the previewed messages on my Lock screen they disappear and for a second turn into such a small 'balloon', only to disappear straight away then.
The "use high priority notifications" gives a little pop-up at the top of the screen that disappears after like 2 seconds. This is no problem for me.
Under "ambient display and lock screen" settings you can choose for the screen whether to light up or not when a message is received. Although i'd like there to be some sort of cooldown to prevent my phone from lighting up for longer periods on end or all the time, this is not the biggest issue either. (Apparently this overruled by something else as setting it to "do nothing - when notifications come and the screen is off" does not work, it still lit up when receiving a whatsapp message)
Under "notifications" settings you can select "lock screen notifications", "floating notifications" and "notifications badges" - so i go to 'lock screen notifications' where i can select 'format' (sounds promising!), but this only gives me the options to:
- show notification content
- show notifications but hide content
- don't show lock screen notifications
No option to change the style of the Lock screen notifications frustratingly.
EDIT: i may have just found the answer myself ... turn off "pop-up notifications" in the whatsapp settings. This way you still get notifications, but no longer the horrible big ones in the middle of the screen
