Especially those people who owned the Note since the beginning in Q4 2011.
What do you think of the development of our Exynos-based Note?
How do you feel after one year that CM for our Note even our little brother S2 is not fully working?
Are you satisfied with the stock ROMs provided by Samsung?
How about the superbrick fiasco? Do you think Samsung should have done something more quickly?
What do you think of the Jelly Bean update for Note? Quality is there?
EDIT: One more question. Will you consider a Samsung for your next device?
Development - good not that bad
CyanogenMod - Not working at its full potential but it is still my daily driver
Satisfaction with Samsung firmware ? - Are you kidding ?
How about the superbrick fiasco ? - I considered selling selling my note when Superbrick bug was detected but there were no other 5' phones at that time. Even now, non-removable battery (Xperia Z and others) is a deal-breaker for me.
Jelly bean update - It does not have professional and finishing touch as I quoted your post in other thread.
Am I happy with my Note ?
I am happy because I'm content and I am content because I am happy
For your every question it's a no.. There are not much development even some peps here think uploading the stock deodex rom with xyz name adding some mods which are already present on forum individually is a developmnet..? A big no, but the elite xda-developers who are trying their best bringing cutting edge work and something innovative to android development world is called development and i am very thankful to them.. But still it's not up to par.. I wish i bought a nexus device in place of note regarding android development and modding.. And sammy is just to lazy in providing update to our device and providing source codes, stock jb is just unacceptable for me it's too laggy for anyone who uses cm as a daily driver.. I am afraid to say that cm is also not fully functional, the memory leak sometimes make me go crazy but have to live with this sh*t truth about my beloved note.. After all i love my note than any other device owned by me in past and please don't term me as complainig it's all what any note user has in his heart to say.. And yeah how can i forget about brick bug, when my note firstly got affected by it i was like what the heck is wrong with my baby it is dead and you will not believe still i fear from doing any wipes it doesn't matter if i have modified kernel or not and the black crush issue is like never gonna sorted out

Development - we hamper our own progress, more politics than codes, groupism, lack of feedback, squelching of viable ideas
CM - an alternative to explore but not be ruled/smothered by.
Samsung performance - Good in many ways- stable, battery friendly/new features/ frequent updates. Good inspite of black clipping, highly priced devices and poor build quality.
Brickbug - never existed beyond the walls of xda and/or rooting process.
Jelly bean - better than ics
Had a lot of fun with my Note. if i didnt have it , with my past experience of it, Id go for a Samsung product but would wait for price to go down first.
NB - Can you really hope for an unbiased answer ? where you become popular and part of the herd if you call Sammy Crapsung and start off your OP with a statement like - I hate Touchwiz , and thanks are heaped on you for it ? Hate begets hate.
I never put forth my views for argument so dont even try.
1 No development to full potential without Exymos drivers, still ppl did best they could. Most devs left by now
[email protected] ... ... ...them.
3No, but some custom ROMs are/were good.
4My phone has sane chip - they should recall vulnerable devices or deliver sw fix earlier.
5For me on AllianceLSZ it is as close as possibly, but I did not tried stock version.
Last one. I don't think so. They grow to big market share - lame corporation. They are lying, promising and not delivering. All I liked -big screen now is no longer Samsung's only thing. I am not fond of cheap plastic too. I liked sd card and removable battery.
Time will tell. HTC one Motorolla X LG who knows?
Development you can't talk about it since it is for every device separate and the devices high end life is under 6 months so developers are using the hit and run tactic since after awhile the device isn't popular and if you now add the delay of source to be given from the manufacture tell me what can - could you await from the developers. Who they make this with 0 to low profit gain except few of them, but that's another story.
You can't compare s2 with any device out there. S2 is legen wait for it dary .
Samsungs firmware upgrade policy was ok till ics came out, the updates where faster then you could find all the changes from one. After the second ics firmware the things did go worse, if I remember right it was s3 comming out time. And before the note 2 was introduced there was the end.
Profit rules them all.
If you don't buy that you will buy the other. Tell me a company who is making a good device with great support? None.
Google isn't producing her own devices.
Apple? Come on you can spend your money somewhere else.
As long smartphones aren't as PC's where you can add 10, different self picked, parts to make a phone and after that you pick a OS to install on it with the drivers for the parts. Till then you will pay to be happy when you will get a fully operating device with SOME of the things you need.
Own a DBT N7000
Flashed first time on JB leak since till then, the device and OS was enought/had nothing to offer more, to my needs.
Cm never used it. But N7000 without spen? Huge respect to the guys and girls for supporting so many devices ofc.
Let the "flames" begin.

1 [Development]. Well, there are some sweet ROMs and mods, but my mate that recommended looking for stuff here some time ago said there's everything here, and TBH I don't see it, was looking for ported S Memo for JB, ink effect for S Pen only and other small mods and didn't find anything
2 [CM]. Never cared about it, I picked Note for features built around TW
3 [Stocks]. Until JB, it was pretty good, new features, not too much crap, stable and efficient
4 [Brick]. Terrible mistake and marketing failure, didn't affect me fortunately
5 [JB]. Nope, it's a total disappointment, I was eager to update it ASAP, but after I did it I was like "WHAT THE HELL MAN?". Sad, sad update
6 [Sammy]. I never considered any Samsung's phone other than SII or Note, so no
I am still very happy with my Note...with some work to be done, JB is very fast and stable and bugfree...i tried all CM and his derivates and they are great, but i still like modded stock most, mainly for all the features coming with it or possible to add - and it lags 0 (in words ZERO) for me...brickbug was an awful mistake, bricked 2 devices for me (one i got repaired on warranty)...i dont care about blackclipping cause it never affected me that much...
And cause this seems to be the 'bash sammy and note 1 thread' i am looking forward to some public flogging
I am also happy with my note.
I feel there is a strong but disappointed community regarding development. Most developers have strained that Samsung closedness in regards of hardware level drivers have halted back development months if not a year.
I personally feel the folowing is true: because of difficulty in basic os openeness guys like CM team have found time wanting in further development then basic os. I saw endevours in spen functionality and firmly believe if Samsung was more open, not only would rom development taken off more but also the app development. Just gettting rom functional has sucked the living daylights out of a lot of good devs. Had that not been the case they would have been motivated and have time left to revolutionizing further spen/apps stuff. This is a cascading effect.
I in that sense having seen burnouts and close burnouts with certain devs, am definitely not dissapointed in the devs. Greatfull for their devotion and spirit. In Samsung, yes definately dissapointed. I love what Samsung did with JB. But this whole ordeal is not a good example of transforming an opensource platform into a true community platform. That Samsung can do better. Must do better, because the XDA community is already speaking of moving from Samsung to more dev friendly mobiles. Samsung needs to turn that around.
Their future lineup is promising, but with this trackrecord, its not gonna appeal the devs into storming buyin.
More and more users are following favorite devs, if those devs move away, so will xda members following those devs. Time to step up the game Samsung, we know you want to.
Note is a great device(except battery) for me.Yeah,I miss more ported roms from other phones too,but today we have so many different chips and without sources for drivers I know it's hard...

Read somewhere that Samsung denied CM Officials' request to release TW Source. IMHO, I don't know if its true or actually a matter of concern but it is quite noticeable that other manufacturers' devices have amazing CMs whereas TW based phones are suffering.

Dear Samsung, Nobody wants your ****ing motion sensor voodoo you call "Smart-this-Smart-that" and annoying visual/audio effects you call "Nature-Nature". Your idea of using a Digitizer with a phone? Probably. When it comes to RAW Power, Samsung doesn't shy away. That's the beauty of it.
Note has many achievements.
1. It tasted 3 flavors of android.
2. Its the first >5 inch phone which changed the way of users habit.
3. It has seen the mist development more than galaxy nexus. It got all tge major custom releases with tw stock roms as a bonus.
4. Its the only phone which even after 1 and a half year life has a place in users heart.
5. It was a future proof device of its time and the way dev helped it groom is remarkable.
6. Thanks to devs who despite being annoying contributes so much to make our experience good.

I know this is early. Lol I know. I was just curious of anyone's heard anything about it yet. I'm going to upgrade to the GS6 but only when CM gets released. I refuse to use TW. And now that Google has abandoned the GPe program this makes it even harder to upgrade.
So.. any news?

By the time your done pondering on S6 / cm, will be looking at the next great thing SG9 .
Lol.

Sheeeeeet ain't nuttin happenin'
Why would you want to buy a galaxy s5/6 and put cyanogenmod on it? Are you not buying it for the camera/thumb print scanner or samsung pay which will suck or not work at all on cm? If you want cm so bad other flagship phones cover that nich much better. You buy a expensive phone and make all the features that make it expensive useless, makes no sense to me.
Nope I'm not buying it for the thumb scanner, or Samsung pay. Everything I need, CM gives me. Have been using it since CM7 and has given me everything I want.
Stock Android>
In my opinion at least. Battery life is much better, OS is more responsive. And as far as I have seen for myself there is no difference between picture quality between TW and stock Android.
Before I broke three HTC Android phones. and I left forever HTC Android phones, now I broke Samsung S5 and no more Samsung Android phones.
Reason is crappy battery
Poor android design.
Poor rooting capability.
Phone didn't last 1 year.
Every time google is bul****ting that with new version we improved performance, battery life. I was with android family since 1.6 and in that period I didn't performance improvement. Always forcing you to buy now and more powerful phone. If update to new version of android so your phone is getting ****ed. So where is performance?
My next phone will Windows 10.
If you broke that many phones, I'd say the problem is not the phones
windows phones are great but they are not made from steel so dont think they will last from a fall like you said :silly:

Is not about steel, its about stability, battery life and multitasking. . I want smart phone, not just phone to make calls. Did you notice that with every big update it takes more and more space, also it eat more memory and CPU. I expected that it will be more polishing and looking a way to improve battery life. We don't need to wait until it comes better battery technology.
Another interesting thing. Why smartwatches last longer than android phone? Why they can't make same on android phones? Watch is 6 times smaller than phone . I think that google are going to wrong way something that I didn't expect. I though that google developers don't follow apple strategy to make OS which consume more and more battery and power to force people to buy new phone because of OS and Security flaw. I buy with two reason every two years: With contain better hardware and improved OS. But always you get improved hardware. So when they will start to think how to improve OS? How many years we need to wait until they will go to right way?

Recovery & others things
My idea : Windows 10 is very good for pcs
for phones it's debatable btw !
Regards, bro !
I don't understand people talking about broken phones as the subject is Android.
And i have to say, I also start to feel like a fool every time we see new Android updates supposedly improving performance, battery and ram usage.
The reality is that battery does not improve, everything takes more space and ram. All the times Google told us battery improved, we should have phones that last 10 days already...
All the security issues for which there is no quick patch available for everybody highlight another big(ger) flaw of Android.
I also think that Google should take a step back and improve all these points and stop being a accomplice of this "programmed obsolescence" used by all manufacturers to push people to switch to new phones from lack of support after not even 2 years.
We are using phones more and more as computers and payment methods, we do everything with them. Security deserves a more important focus that it currently does, especially for such expensive phones.
Hopefully Windows 10 will improve this, bring some better competition and push Google and manufacturers to take this more seriously...
Samsung is cheap Korean junk. I should have stuck with Sony, more so considering they still provide FM module and are better build quality plus easier to root without knox-type crap. Enterprise won't use rubbish android, only ios.

I agree with your battery point but I think breaking phones is ur fault! Samsung is one of the easiest brand that has phones really easy to root, to find roms and to be kept update through years
If Samsung doesn't follow HTC by shipping phones with dozens pre-installed apps so battery life it would 20% better. I don't use crappy apps what Samsung is offering. I paid £600 for peace of technology but not for crappy apps. So better I will buy phone which is close to stock and allow me to install what exactly need to me and for my work.

OtterBox!
I've been a rootoholic since the first HTC Desire (2010) and I've been lovin to improve every smartphone throughout those years. I believe that the reason for root have literally died. Since 2010, the interest in rooting and developing roms for phones that really needed it, vanished more and more for every year. The latest 4 - 5 years, developers have mostly only been interested in rooting flagships? People root for different reasons, privacy, debloating, theming, speed or all. In my opinion, the whole developing community have forgotten the real mission!
"Develope, root and improve phones that really needs it!" (mid range and low budget phones)
And look now!? To unlock a bootloader (on a phone that's perfect without it) we're suppose to pay for it? Not even an option to donate, like back in the days? No offense to you, the devs, this is probably just part of Xda evolution, and I need to catch up with reality. Just wondering what this community will look like in 2 - 5 years?

For me yes, specially when it comes to speed and you can tweak also the display settings to get rid of the screen burn.

Wondering
how much better can a phone like this get?
I mean, cpu speed is already fantastic, and sound is extremely high quality (Neutron)!
Is there anywhere I can read about this? Progress and experience so far. How big was the difference? And so on...
I could imagine to underclock and disable some features I never use, to save battery...

We disabled a few of the throttling stuff that LG put in the software and it's way faster now and along with FDE.AI Magisk Module the battery is also lasting a bit longer.

Will they detect my root?

Will I miss out on any functions after debloating all sprint stuff?
Can I reverse, go back to the original rom?

Your original rom would be on Slot B....but you would still have the original rom on Slot A unless you update to US unlocked Pie....
Tempted!
Root
Being an old rootoholic, I've kind of convinced myself it's not really necessary anymore, especially on a phone like this. But after digging into the threads about it, I've reconsidered...
So, after some resistance, I'm tempted to unlock bootloader and root
Just a few questions:
Slot A and B? Is it possible/complicated to activate "the other" slot (dual boot), or is it just there for backup and update?
Is com.lge.rctprovider and other spy and spam apps still there?
How exactly is the remote screen thing done? Do I need to install something, and how do you pay the fee?
Will it be possible to remap the assistant button?
If I'm not wrong, Qualcomm just block specific bands on carrier's requests, meaning that all bands exist in the chip. So I wonder, can this be unlocked?
How is the signal/reception on Sprint? Will all necessary bands still be there and fully functional?
Thanks!

After so many years with these phones, I've learnt that we would rather buy an old flagship but not a new mid-low range
Even u arent rooting it, flagship is usually much better as that's what your manufacture could do best at that time. Mid-low range was intended to be half-assed
Root is useful to install AdAway and Titanium Backup, even if staying with stock ROM.
Blockada without root sounds like it is not as effective as AdAway.
Ti Backup enables reverting to prior saved version of app when a newer version is faulty or inferior (happens a lot). Also debloating by freezing or uninstalling, not sure an ADB method offers all the options of Ti to debloat.
If V40 still has no way to unlock bootloader and root, without the Octoplus thing, I guess I'm stuck with V30+, which apparently means the dwindling stock of aging V30+ from dicey sellers on eBay etc., including lots of 1+ year old LS998 crossflashed to US998 and sold as "new". Li-Ion phone batteries have only a 2-3 year life....
...
There's currently no way to bootloader unlock the V40 (I have the US non carrier "unlocked" version). Guy on Telegram is ignoring my message. Therefore, root does not appear to be an option.

Root is not needed nowadays except for those because better processors that you wont really need root for normal to performance usage. Well thts my oppinion for the op
The question should be why not to root. The answers to that are far less. Than why to root. Because of the endless possibilities

I sadly could not find any useful information.

me too, still waiting something from 10s... sadly no development going
This just happens way too often for me in particular i pickup a phone that is from the redmi note series which falls in between the pro and redmi range which then gets overshadowed by pro model with more people developing for the pro and pro max variants
I would also like to know if there is anything going on wrt custom roms for this device. I am looking to buy this device if there will be custom rom support eventually.

That is true. But recently in amazon India's annual sale, note 10s was available for as low as INR12500 (~$168) after all the discounts for the base 6GB/64GB variant which makes it one of best (specs wise) in this price range. Hence the hope that with so many buyers, some development progress, we would be able to see.
Another problem now-a-days with Mi (and even other brands) phones in India is that they deviously increase the prices post ~2 weeks of launch by minimum INR500 or more (which can be make or break for budget cautious buyers like me). Hence waiting for a custom roms might ironically mean paying more for the device later.

However, all that is secondary, this thread is primarily for discussion on custom rom development.

Same question here. Who does those ROMs? Are they for hire? What's missing? Is there a public repo with work in progress almost working ROMs? How does that usually go? Or do devs drop binaries out of nowhere? I assume it has to be rather transparent for security reasons already.
I would also be willing to chip in.

Sometimes buying the phone is based more on it being a 'value for money' proposition. 'Less Money spent' ranks higher than the 'processor brand' for a similar spec processor (in this case better processor at almost similar price ~INR13k/~$170 USD, when compared to note 10 or realme 8-which is useless because of no root possible ever) with a hope that with the device being cheap, a lot of developers will get interested.
It might not be the case with everyone, but i believe, will apply to most of the people out there who want to change devices constantly for cheap.
No TWRP (yet) --> No custom ROM
So, wait for TWRP ...

Might be a dumb question. Forgive my ignorance, but who can help with TWRP for this device? Is there some place where we can request one?

Hi, currently i am working on it. It booted however there is a problem, data stays encrypted. Even after format data it still doesn't work. This is because this device uses keymaster 4.1. As i know there is currently no other fix (well i saw something on twrp's gerrit but i am not sure it will work) so you probably should wait a bit more.
Ok we will wait
Teamwin release TWRP to 3.5.2, and it's now compatible with Android 11
Work in progress .....
