I know the Note 8 is USB 3.1 but I believe there is gen 1 and gen 2. Anybody know which the N8 has?

I want to buy this MHL cable on ebay but I am not sure if it works on the note 2. I asked the seller and he told me no, it doesn't work but I don't really trust him because this cable work on S3/S4 and note 3, why not work on note 2 as well?

Hello. Had my note 4 since release and just now trying to use usb host / otg and having no luck. Absolutely no devices are working on my note 4. Tried the otg adapter on my nexus 10 and its fine so unless there is a special adapter needed for the note 4 the otg cable is not the problem. I have tried a xbox controller a mous and a thumb drive and nothing not even led lights showing activation.
So any advice or is my usb port bad? Been using vanilla android for a while (nexus devices) is there a setting im not use to maybe?
solved
It appears my motorola otg is not compatable with the note 4. Tried a samsung otg and all works. Guess not all cables are equal?
No problem here. Using my old otg cable from my Note 2
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
Maybe cause its samsung otg? Dunno either way i know my motorola otg (from xoom) does not work on my note but works on all my vanilla nexus devices. Either way got it working
my patriot stealth xt 64gb works perfect on my note4.
I Love the USB 3 port on my Note 3, and I felt it was a real big step backwards to not include it on the Note 4.
I really hope that the Note 5 doesn't have a USB 2 port. That would mean a two year old bit of kit has better specs (in part) than a new bit!
USB 2 micro USB confirmed :/
Nope, still microUSB 2.0.
It's funny how they tout faster UFS 2.0 internal storage this generation and then completely gimp the phone to USB 2.0 speeds anyway, negating some of the potential benefits.
Maybe next year, they'll finally bring out USB Type-C with 3.0/3.1 speeds and the display-out modes.

Dears,
As I've lost my dex cable that came with the phone I've been researching online and it says that the 2017 dex station works with the note 9 snapdragon is that true? As I was already looking for a solution to charge the phone while using dex this would be perfect.... Any performance issues I should know about? Or any other better solutions to using dex and charging?
Any help would be appreciated
I do not know which model it is and I can't check right now but the DeX I bought with my Note8 works just fine with my Note9 Snapdragon.
So far I've used two el-cheapo 3rd party USB-C "hubs" (with HDMI out and USB-C power in), both have charged the phone through that HUB. (That is, if no external power is connected, the HUB and devices get power from the phone, but if charger is connected to the HUB, phone switches from power supplier to power receiver.) So, I think the charging through the HUB -part should be ok with almost anything (as long as that anything follows the standards properly).
I have no experience on the official DEX things. (Too big for my tastes.)

The Dex Statiom (2017) that was introduced with the Note 8 works just fine with the Note 9. But for roughly the same price, you can get the upgraded Dex Pad (2018) that was made for the Note 9 (but also works with the Note 8 and the S9/+. They can be bought brand new or like new at $40-50 on eBay all day long. It's where I got mine.
Or you can buy a $16 Choetech USB C to HDMI cable and it will activate Dex and/or screen mirroring just like the Samsung cable.
I have the dex station (flip top stand) and it works with with the note 9 no problem and charges the phone.
I'm wondering what we will see for DeX support on the S10+. I just ordered the 1TB/12G version, I'm hoping it will drive my Dell UltraSharp U3818DW 38" monitor at 3840 X 1600. My current S9+ is driving my Dell U2713HM at 2560 X 1440 through the DeX Doc.
Anyone have experience using DeX at high resolutions? I'd like to know if the limitations come from the the DeX Doc or the DeX Cable. Is there any chance that the S10 Plus will be able to work directly with displays via USB Type-C ?
Some observations on the S9+ after the update to Android 9 Pie.
#1 The S9+ no longer requires the DeX Doc to go into DeX mode, but it won't provide full resolution with just a cable. The display resolutions are limited to 1920X1080 or 1600X900
#2 You can use a USB-C cable (Version 3.1 Thunderbolt type) to go straight from the phone into a USB-C port on your monitor. You don't need any type of HDMI cable.
#3 If you use the Samsung DeX doc over HDMI, I'm able to get 21:9 UWQHD @ 3440X1440. This is really great, but it's still not giving me the native 3840X1600 that my LG38UC99 supports.
I'm really hoping the S10+ will support 3840X1600 over USB-C via a straight through USB-C Thunderbolt cable.
Galaxy S9+ on Android 9 Pie
I have the Samsung DeX Pad (EE-M5100TBEGUS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079TL2TGY/
I also have the TOPOINT USB C to HDMI Adapter for Samsung DeX https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DZYLVKN/
Both of these doc solutions work fine with the S9+. I've tried other USB-C to HDMI cables, as well as a straight through USB-C to USB-C cables. Android 9 has enabled DeX support for pretty much everything I've tried. If you plug the Samsung USB-C power adapter into the DeX Pad or TOPOINT device, you get the larger screen resolutions choices for DeX.
I have 2 large 38" monitors.
Dell U3818DW
LG 38UC99-W
The maximum resolution for these monitors is 21:9 format @ 3840 x 1600 pixels. These are the exact same LCD display, just slightly different packaging between LG and Dell.
When I use the Samsung DeX Pad on the LG 38UC99-W, I get a 3440 x 1440 display resolution on DeX.
If I use the exact same doc and cables with the Dell U3818DW, I only get WQXGA 2560 X 1600. For some reason, the 3440 x 1440 option is greyed out.
#1 Has anyone ever used a DeX device @ 3840 x 1600?
#2 Why the heck would there be a difference between the Dell and LG monitors. It seems very odd that I can't select 3440 X 1440 on the Dell?
#3 Is there any hope that my soon-to-be Galaxy S10+ 1TB/12GB will give me full resolution support of 3840 x 1600 on DeX?
#4 Are there any apps or hacks that will enable the greyed out resolutions or hidden resolutions?
It would be nice if the mods here would start a dedicated DeX area.
I bought this adapter https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B07919ZNB4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_K7TECb39R1THT hope this will works !!
In order to use the highest resolutions you need to use the pad or the dock station for heat reasons. Both have a fan in order to cool down the device. With my Note 9 I handle 3440x1440 on my Dell monitor.

Which Dell monitor do you have that is giving you 3440x1440?
I have an LG 38UC99-W and a Dell U3818DW. They are the exact same LCD panel. No matter what I try, I can't get 3440x1440 on the Dell. I've used the exact same doc/cable/adapters on both monitors. Both the S9+ and the S10+ will only output WQXGA 2560 X 1600 on the Dell. For some reason, the 3440 x 1440 option is greyed out.
Your advise to use the pad or dock for heat is good, but other adapters work fine. You must provide power to the USB-C port to gain access to the higher resolutions.
I have the Dell U3415W.
Pushing a monitor that does 3840x1600 from a smartphone is rare. Maybe 5%-10% of DEX users even have such an expensive monitor. I'd say more than 50% of DEX users have a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor at least. Also, the screen ratio of a 3840x1600 resolution is 12:5 unlike the more common 21:9.
Question I have the note 9 with samsung dex version 3.1.24 is any difference with the galaxy s10 samsung dex version? thank you

My S10+ shows 3.1.29
I do not see any noticeable difference in features compared to my S9+
With the .JPG image attached, you can see that 3840x1600 is not supported.
On a side note, has anyone been able to install the beta version of linux on dex (aka Unbuntu 16) on their Galaxy S10?
Is the s10 plus compatible with the DeX station I know you can do it with just a cable but I wanna have a wired keyboard and mouse too just wondering if anyone knows this is the one I'm looking at getting
