Use of SPen on Dex Mode - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hey everyone, i have an issue with my new Note 9 and its Dex mode. I've contacted Samsung's reps but no responses after 1 week now.
My issue is: if i connect my Note 9 to Samsung's Dex Hub (1st Gen) OR a 3rd party usb c to hdmi adapter (the Meopolow one) i cannot use my Spen to control the cursor on the screen or write on the phone's display and see it on the TV.
I've seen now more than 5 YouTubers doing this on their Notes.
I even have a visual clue about this missing feature - after i connect my phone, in the notification area i get a different notification as opposed to what i saw on YouTube. I will provide 2 photos for you to see what is different. If anyone can help i would appreciate it, i really need to make this work.
PS: the screenshot with blue annotations is on my phone, the one with the green band is from YouTube. Look where it says "use your phone as a touch pad

Works on mine, but it still kinda sucks. It asked me to turn my phone sideways to use the S-Pen. The best way I've seen is to connect a Bluetooth mouse to your phone.

I am switching to landscape and i tried with and without keyboards or mice. The thing is .. and you can check... You wont have that text in the notification area whether you keep your phone in portrait or landscape

Were you able to figure out what was wrong? I have the exact same issue you describe and nothing I've tried seems to work.

Yes I did.
The issue is with the Samsung's Dex Station (1st generation, the one like a hockey puck). It will not work with it.
Samsung's techs argued this: "since 1st Generation Dex Station is intended to be used with the phone in portrait mode, and the use of Spen requires landscape... it will not work".
To which i replied: "But we do have the possibility to run in landscape, if we double tap de "icon" in the top right corner it switches to landscape... also this can be verified by pulling down the notification area, which now comes down from the power button and not from the sensors side; also i even switched to landscape the whole thing, dex and phone....still no go".
They replied back: "It doesnt matter that you switch to landscape, the function needs to work with a device that can have landscape capability, and Dex 1 doesnt". The tech guy who called me, while on the phone, tested 2 Dexes himself and confirmed it will not work... its not just a tale"
I was about to accept this, but i told him I have a 3rd party usbc to hdmi (Meolopow) and it doesnt work with it either. He said, unfortunately its not Samsung, so from out point of view the reasons can be different, we cannot offer support for this.
So, i went and bought myself a Samsung adaptor (1x usb 3.0, 1x Gigabit Ethernet, 1x Hdmi, 1x UsbC) usb to hdmi.... and it works. So...it does seem that they are right. All those who bought themselves 3rd party adaptors... and have this thing work... they should consider themselves lucky... it seems its not guaranteed.
I chose the adaptor instead of the Samsung Dex Pad (2nd generation) as it is smaller and more versatile. On top of that... it doesnt require power to work... works fine without charger...and... i dont have to remove the flipcase or bumper.

Personally, I'm using 3rd party adaptor and the S-pen works for me...

Does the s-pen remote function have to be enabled?

No

try searching for the "freedom keyboard" It folds in half, has a built in stand for your device, and will connect to pretty much anything.

I have a wee Apple BT keyboard that I find the Adam can PAIR with but NOT CONNECT to. I have tried the dreaded BlueInput app. and it connects allows Caps on and off to work, but then dies when I try to use it with (say) Documents to Go or anything else.
I did finally get my Jabra 620s stereo headset to connect and it works well with Music and 3 by Filipe Abrantes (the best player for my money). So it is not the BT hardware on the Adam.
I am working on it ....
Hey I use that Microsoft Keyboard, its nice, and works great, though i use it on my gtab with cm7 but that because we have the nvidia tegra driver support, which means easy to put on the adam, just waiting till it comes. BTW i have tried almost 8 different bluetooth keyboards, ones that are small(too small) and ones that are huge(full size with extra buttons on top for windows 7) however this is the best ive found for its ease of pairing and its compact but full size fill.
Has anyone else tried the the Targus iPad keyboard? It's a sweet little device. It's about the size of a laptop keyboard and has the chiclet style keys. I would reccomend it to anyone.
Regards,
Jason

It DOESN'Twork with the Adam! I have the LCD/Wi-fi model running EdenX. Adam wont recognize the nano receiver. Crazy thing is I had an Archos 101it & it had the drivers to recognize the receiver. Adam does not. Very disappointing.

keyboards that do work
Yeah I made the mistake of buying the microsoft arc too under the assumption that all 2.4ghz keyboards would work because one did. It is something that Microsoft does with the interface that is lacking. I was able to sell mine and only take a 5$ loss on the deal. What I did find was that the IOGEAR 2.4ghz multi media keyboard works great with my Adam. I am using it right now to type this. It is not as small or light as the Microsoft Arc, but it has the roller ball mouse that functions ok. I forced a computer store to let me try it out before I bought this one, because I was not going to laydown more cash for something that did not work with my ADAM. I have seen this IOGEAR keyboard for as low as 40$ on-line. I paid 60$ for it at the store. For me it has been worth every penny, I am severly limited by the lack of physical keyboard. I think Google has really missed the boat on this one by not having the BT HID support set up better in Android. Apple finally pulled its head out and has made BT external keyboards something common place now.
My Igo stowaway BT keyboard also pairs but does not connect.
Retraction: MS ARC KEYBOARD DOES WORK!!!
WOOT!!! I decided to try one last time! So, I toggeled the Allow USB Debugging check box a couple times, plugged in the nano receiver and restarted Adam with the receiver plugged it. When it rebooted, VOILA, Keyboard working!!!! I don't know which step fixed it. But, it works! I'm typing on it right now!!!
Further testing . . . I unplugged the receiver and hot plugged it back in without restarting = STILL WORKING! . . . I unplugged the receiver and put it into my ConnectLand 4-port USB hub/dongle = STILL WORKING! . . .
I added my RocketFish Nano Optical Mouse receiver to the hub = BOTH STILL WORKING!!!
Lastly, this USB keyboard/case works too!!! http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-G-Tablet-Case-Keyboard-Stand/dp/B004JF9N1O . . . I had this already. And I'd modified the left tab lowering it even with the right tab to accommodate my old G-Tablet's ports. On Adam, the Left Tab now covers the left USB port instead of the volume keys. I can live with that< since the right USB is free & available. The right tab covers the Back Button. I can live with that too while it's in the case. If Adam goes to sleep, I just toggle the power switch with no problems waking it back up!!!
SO, here are TWO keyboard options that work!!!

found another keyboard solution!
im went to frys and bought 3 different bluetooth keyboards but was having no luck pairing them. but i did have luck on my 4th one! and its pretty awesome!
its Pro HT Bluetooth Mini Keyboard using the bluetooth keyboard easyconnect app in the market. The keyboard is super tiny, much like a qwerty on a smartphone.
Using Adam with EdenX v2.1.0
*UPDATE:i have noticed, if i dont use the keyboard for more then 10 seconds, it stops working. but once i go to settings, bluetooth and hit scan for devices, it begins working instantly. I think it has to do with the bluetooth easy connect app failing to continuously scan for the bluetooth keyboard.
Does anyone have a workaround for this???

i have the same keyboard. I succeeded connecting it to my Adam (running Eden+ last version) using a market tool (cannot recall the name just now) . Keyboard is recognized but when i type i can only hear the keyboard sound (which proved it is seen by my ADAM) but nothing appears on screen. I tried only with touchdown for now...
So will continue look into it and post my findings

Yes ... Since the Android Bluetooth HID does not work with keyboards, perhaps use a Mini bluetooth dongle. Even my Microsoft wireless mouse works this way. I'll report more when a Belkin mini bluetooth dongle arrives and I have my Apple Wireless keyboard working.

New and Complete Car Installation

After mainly lurking on the forums for a while, I decided to embark on a Nexus 7 Installation as I wanted to have to same features found in newer vehicles in my 2000 Mazda Protege. The only problem is I didn't want a permanent installation and didn't find previous posts to be complete enough other than to get some ideas from. I didn't like the fixed installation because the screen in most setups doesn't face the driver and doesn't appear to be useful. In addition, I wanted to be able to remove it especially in the summer when conditions in the car may be dangerous to the device itself.
The goal of this post is to give very detailed account of the setup up, how it works, and what my future plans for improvement are. I would also like to try and answer as many questions as possible for people considering doing the same with their own devices.
Video
First off, we'll start with a quick video of the installation in action. It may seem a little low in volume in the video but all of the sounds and music are playing through the car's speakers. As such, you can make it as loud as anyone could possible want.
Pictures
First up is the view from about where the driver would see. In reality, the steering wheel does not obstruct the screen.

Next is where the hub is currently placed. I don't yet want it completely hidden because the signal strength is displayed on the freedompop stick. It can be pushed down and out of sight from here.
And the hub in all its glory.
This is the view from the back where you can see the fish eye lens protruding from the trunk lid.
And now with the lens removed. Its still unfinished but I wanted to get a working prototype. I just need to sand down and seal the opening to prevent rust.
The MIMO antenna for data connection is just attached to the passenger's headrest for now. The wires are pretty short so it may end up staying here for now.
The FM antenna is currently placed in the back by the rear window. I live pretty far from the station so I needed something bigger for a clean signal.
A view of the power inverter. The hub takes up the plug while the Nexus is powered via the USB port.
And finally, a diagram showing the buttons of the bluetooth remote and what they do.

USB ROM for Nexus 7 with Timur’s Kernel
Webcam Hotswapping by redeyedjedi
SDR Touch
Torque Pro
Backup Cam (Mirror)
Tasker
Spotify
iHeartRadio
External Keyboard Helper Pro
Assistant Event for Tasker
Hardware Set Up
The Nexus 7 is mounted on the dash with the tablet mount, facing the driver. Its placement allows for easy viewing while not obstructing vision. From there, a 3.5mm audio cable runs for the headphone jack out into a PAC Ground Loop Isolator to eliminate the alternate whine and other electrical interference. This finally plugs into the AUX input of a cheap aftermarket radio I installed to replace the stock.
Coming out of the micro usb port is a Micro USB OTG Cable with power which connects to a powered USB Hub. The hub and device are powered by a 12V Power inverter. Everything should be able to be powered just through the OTG cable but I was having some charging issues early on which I rectified by disabling some apps from logging and constantly using the GPS but I kept the setup as it worked well.
On the hub are the Freedompop Bolt, RTL2832U dongle, and USB extension. The Freedompop Bolt I got a deal on over the summer which gives me a gig of free data every month which the Nexus used for its primary data connection. The signal strength can vary pretty dramatically out in NC where I am so I also installed a MIMO Antenna to improve reception and also have cell tethering as a backup in a pinch. The RTL2832U dongle is connected to the passive antenna for better FM reception which required some adapters listed in the Hardware Section. The USB extension cable runs from the dash, under the seats into the trunk where it connects to the USB webcam mounted in the trunk lid. I drilled a hole through which a fisheye lens attached to give me the backup cam.
Connected to underneath the dash is the bluetooth OBDII adapter which feeds realtime data to the Nexus and is displayed on Torque Pro. I enjoy knowing as much as possible about the car and actually end up using this display over the instrument cluster.
The final piece of hardware is the bluetooth remote mounted on the steering wheel. The buttons are remapped to various apps allowing complete control of the Nexus just using the left hand. It only took about a day to completely memorize everything which allows it to be operated without taking my eyes off the road.
Software Set Up
On the software side, The Nexus is running USB ROM with Timur's kernel which provides a fantastic base to start from when it comes to car installations. In addition, redeyedjedi's mod was installed which allows for hotswapping of the webcam as long as it was plugged in at boot. This means once everything is set up correctly, I can remove the tablet for whatever reason and when I plug in the USB again, everything works like it did before without any reboot needed.
Torque Pro is used to read and display all of the realtime information as mentioned before. SDR Touch taps into the RTL2832U dongle to give me live FM radio which is controlled via the bluetooth remote. I have the mainstays of Spotify and iHeartRadio for music in case I have poor reception of radio or just feel like something different.
Getting the webcam to work was tricky because most apps have the display rotated 90 degrees are have too low a refresh rate such that the feed to too choppy to be useful. I ended up installing Mirror because it gives me the correct orientation of the image and has a high enough refresh rate.
Like any good setup up, the Nexus is used for Navigation which is quite nice on the large, 7'' screen compared to my HTC One which I used to use. Google Now can be launched via the bluetooth remote allowing for voice commands to be given to set the location. Having all of the media run through the Nexus means that when navigation is speaking, the other sounds are muted and the directions can be heard clearly. This eliminated the problem of having the GPS drowned out by the radio which happened all too often with my old setup. It should be noted that I cannot yet get SDR Touch to muted or lower its volume when Navigation is speaking yet so that can be a problem sometimes.
Anyways, this is meant for people to follow along if they would like, get some inspiration for their own projects, as well as get some feedback on my own and how it can be improved. As of right now, I'm not looking to completely hide everything because it's all still being tested. I am, however, looking for some thing which can be added on to possibly make it even better. Some things I have already considered are putting a bunch of music on a flash drive for another source of music in case of poor FM and data reception.
Awesome work, i'll try to follow it. thanks for this guide
Is the dash mount sturdy enough to reduce vibrations/shakiness from driving?

Yep! I love this mount. It is solidly stuck to the dash and the Nexus doesn't move at all even when you hit a pothole or something.
Also, if you are using this guide as a reference, I am testing a new radio antenna setup. The dipole I was using was too directionally dependent and I would lose signal depending on the car's orientation. I'm testing a set up where I splice into the car's antenna and so far it seems to be working well. Once I finalize the setup, I'll update the OP.
This is awesome. In the back of my mind I've been thinking about doing similar, it's so awesome to see it in action. Good work!

Getting the webcam to work was tricky because most apps have the display rotated 90 degrees are have too low a refresh rate such that the feed to too choppy to be useful. I ended up installing Mirror because it gives me the correct orientation of the image and has a high enough refresh rate.

Interesting setup with all the extra antennas!
Question about the cam...
You mentioned refresh rates and all. What about lag or delay? Is there a delay in the video when it hits your screen?
Or was that fixed with the Mirror app?
Nice setup. I have a question about your FreedomPop dongle. When your Nexus comes out of sleep mode, does it automatically reconnect to the dongle/4G? I have one as well, and it worked fine when I tested it on my bench but once installed it doesn't seem to want to work.
Backup Cam (Mirror)
Can you please post a link to the Backup Camera App you have used... After much searching I still cannot find it...
This is the ugliest car install I've seen, obviously aesthetics aren't an important factor for you.

That's the ugliest comment I've seen. Obviously, reading the post wasn't important to you. There's no reason to hide it and make it look good if it's still in a testing phase for different items.
Great post aviola, interesting choices in parts and a very good breakdown for people to gain ideas from. Very good point about keeping it removable, because summer car heat can really obliterate pieces/devices that are out unprotected.
:good:
thanks so much for this guide. :good:

I have no real issues when it comes to lag. Initially, when I was using camera applications, there was a good 1 second delay between what the camera saw and what the screen showed. Installing the mirror app reduced the lag to a point I don't notice it anymore.

Here is the link for the Mirror app I have been using:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yuvalluzon.mirror
In terms of updates, I have successfully tied the tuner into my car antenna for the best reception. I installed a splitter so that the car radio and usb tuner can be connected simultaneously. SDR is good but doesn't do as well with poor reception and there are some times I would rather just use the radio rather than the whole setup.
I'm still having power issues where the the screen on max and GPS navigation use more power than the tablet gets. I'll probably do some testing with a multimeter to see how much power is actually getting to the tablet but for now I have to take the Nexus in about once a week for a full charge up.
Aesthetically, I don't have any plans as of yet to hide all of the wires. I'm constantly swapping stuff in and out and don't want the hassle of dealing with running them through the dash or anything. As the majority of people have correctly observed, this is a proof concept rather than a formal installation. My objective in posting this was not to provide a complete step by step guide for people to follow as there are already several excellent threads devoted to this. This was meant for people to get ideas from so they could build their own installations with their own equipment.
Thanks everyone for all of the positive feedback. For anyone with questions, feel free to continue to ask and I will do my best to be more timely about answering them. If you need more in depth or specific information, that's really what this thread is all about. I anticipate changes to my setup will come slowly but I'll try and update this with the ones that have been proven to work.

I have my micro usb connected to usb port 2 for the android auto. Make sure the parking brake is set the first time you set up android auto. Might also have to have usb debugging turned on. Only works right now with certain phones, and needs lollipop 5.0 or better. You probably already knew that. If you haven't done the firmware update for the 4100, do that first.
Worked the first time with my Nexus 6.

Yes my parking brake is on. I have the Galaxy S6 which is not in the supported list but it does have Android 5.0 and I was able to download Android Auto App from Google play... I also attempted to do it with my old Galaxy S4 but it doesn't have Android 5.0 so cant download Android Auto... and to top that for MirrorLink I guess I need this Samsung Drive Link App which is not compatible with either phone!
its frustrating... Samsung is not keeping up with the Car technology... for the most part on Samsung's end I keep hearing it mostly works with the Galaxy S3 and some people have it working half ass on the Galaxy S5.

Here is the Amazon link for the Microbpass that is needed for the 4100,
http://www.amazon.com/MicroBypass-Parking-Automatic-Interface-AVH-4100NEX/dp/B00VKQ6ECQ/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429570863&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=micro+bypass+4100
Thanks
The bypasses are relatively easy to make with a relay as well. The reason you can't just ground it out is they went above and beyond to make sure it is only active when the break is on. So, you have to create a delay in the bypass. Attach the amp on wire to the relay, the ground and the emergency break, and you're good to go. It is cheaper and quicker, as any decent electronic store will have the relay. Mine was $4 from RadioShack (RIP). This diagram shows it...

You do not need a bypass! I just bought the 6100-nex. Turn off radio to standby mode. Hold finger 1/2" up from bottom and 1/2" in from left side of screen for like 30-60 seconds. There are YouTube vids on it. Works on all nex radios. Also only the Samsung MHL/HDMI 2.0 adapter will work. NOT the pioneer one.

-Turn on your phone's WiFi hotspot
-Connect a computer to it
-Set up your chromecast to use your phones hot spot as the network
-Plug your chromecast into your radio
Now whenever you want to use your Chromecast you just have to turn on the hotspot feature on your phone. The Chromecast will connect to the hotspot and you can cast to it just like it was on your home (or any other) network.
Thanks!
Stupid question... This vs mirroring or like the unchained app.... no cables?? Not trying to be an ass about to pull the trigger on the appradio4 or 4100-nex so trying to see all the possibilities.. Thanks

This might be a stupid question, but if you set your Chromecast up to stream to your AVH-4100NEX over your phone's WiFi hotspot and then bring it back into your house to plug into your TV will it automatically recognize your home WiFi network or do you have to set it up again? I haven't gone through the initial setup process with my Chromecast for a while so I don't remember if it has memory for prior network setups. Not that I'll use the Chromecast in my car all that much, but they are cheap enough to justify buying two units if it becomes a hassle to reconfigure the Chromecast every time you transfer it between your home and car.

I don't think so. As far as I know, the Chromecast will only look for the network it was set up on. ( sorry for the late response.)

Easy Projection Mode Resolution

Hi all,
I have purchased a type c hub to use the desktop mode of the huawei p20 Pro but the image of the desktop seems very grainy to me when it's plugged in. Has anyone else tried this yet and have any similar problems. I expected the picture to be very clear at 1080p but it isn't.
Any suggestions would be great.

I agree it's certainly not a native 1080 resolution. I wonder if it's due to the screen not being a true 1080x1920 screen. It's serviceable but would be nicer to not look so off.

I agree. All of the icons are rough looking and what's the point in having great quality photos and video if it's going to look naff on the large screen. I'm not sure if its just a bad USB c hub that I have or if this is a problem for everyone.
Would like to know others thoughts on this if they get a chance to test it out.

Mine was just a cheap £10 one from eBay too so may be related, would like to hear other peoples experience on it. I have Tweeted Huawei to ask what the output resolution is, but I've had no response yet.
I'll be checking this tonight although I had already changed the scan mode I thought, will check again tonight
podgeandrodge said:
Ok, I "solved" my problem by fluke. I would love if someone more techy than me could explain but this is what I did to fix the fact that the HDMI output looked more like 640x480 than a hi def picture.
Went to TV settings, and selected advanced, HDMI settings, and Changed HDMI "Auto" mode to HDMI Graphic mode (choice of Graphic/Video - video was default and was crap). As soon as I did this I had perfect outputted photos and videos.
According to one tv manual I found on a search:
"Graphic: HDMI input timing set to Graphic mode (PC) - The image is full scan.
Video: HDMI input timing set to Video mode. The image is over scan."
According to someone on a completely unrelated PS4 forum:
"Basically by changing the HDMI mode to graphic, the HDMI output (be it gaming console, pc, or cable) bypasses "extra" processing features of the TV that
make the game and TV broadcasts look crappy and also causes lag. By bypassing those features you will get a much clearer picture."
Either way, it's fixed. On my tv. And on a shop tv the same issue. So given that I've connected previous phones with hdmi connections a few years ago without issues, this suggests that it is something to do with how the Mate 10 outputs signals in a way that TV recognises?
Love to hear an explanation from the experts. Thanks.
Edit: someone else with a similar issue on another device - so it seems the issue is that the Mate 10 is not recognised by most Televisions as a "PC" which would correct hdmi mode to "graphics" ?
"When I switch between the Blu-Ray and the PC on two separate HDMI inputs, the TV doesn't detect that's it's connected to a PC, so it doesn't switch from video to graphics mode - which is required for it to look good as a computer monitor.
Since the TV deosn't recognize the PC and auto switch to graphics mode, when I switch from Blu-Ray to PC, I have to dig down into the menu and switch the HDMI mode to graphics manually - and then back when I go to the Blu-Ray. -- Major pain if I'm switching back and forth."

OK that's great thanks. I have a Sony bravia TV so will have a look to see if there is anything similar on mine.
Thanks as for the help
I'm using this on my Mate 10 and it looks fine. I have my Mate 10 resolution set to FHD and displaying on 1080p displays, sometimes have to play with aspect ratio to get it displaying correctly ("Just Scan" on my LG TV at home, different settings on other displays). Should add I'm using the Samsung USB-C to HDMI cable, using very cheap cables I guess there may be a difference (although in my experience I don't notice huge/any differences between cheaper and more expensive cables).
Well this will throw a spanner in the works in the quest for a perfect 1:1

I face this issue with my Samsung HDTV (768 X 1366 - Normal HD, not Full HD). But have no problem with my Philips HDTV (This is a Full HD TV).
Btw, Huawei should let us adjust the screen resolution for the Easy Projection as even both of my old Remix Mini (Remix OS Android) working flawlessly with both TV at it allows user to adjust the screen resolution.
Sorry, I know this is an old post but I fixed it.. used to have a cheap generic 2K monitor that displayed 720 x 480.
After getting a Samsung 4K monitor, the resolution went up to 1920 x 1080 without a problem.
After updating to Pie, I'm now showing 1280 x 720 which isn't too bad.. and I'm still trying to figure out how to get back to 1920 x 1080, it was definitely nice!

did you try with the original dex adapter?
I used the generic one. But I learned that it is actually displaying 1920 x 1080, I did a screenshot and the resolution confirms that. I learned that the icons are actually bigger on the EMUI 9 which I do not like. and I thought it was a lower resolution but I was mistaken.
It is 1920 x 1080 but the icons are bigger. It's software, not hardware.

CarPlay AI Box - "Android headunit" dongle?

Hi all!
I looked on the forums here and couldn't find anything about it... have you seen this CarPlay AI Box thing?
Seems like similar hardware as the Android headunits but on a dongle and then you connect it through USB and it streams via CarPlay. I think it's interesting for folks like me with a traditional headunit with Android Auto/CarPlay to have full access to Android.
Does anyone knows about it? I guess we could have the same options as the headunits such as custom firmwares or maybe figuring out what software does that CarPlay integration and use it from an Android phone - getting full Android access...

Expect it to be unfinished, unreliable, 'buggy as' and unsupported.
I have been looking at this as well. I'm going to order one as soon as my wife will let me probably a month or two from now.
To my knowledge nobody else seems to be utilizing car play as a generic display output with touch screen support.
I can't wait to get a hold of one of these and dump the firmware, if we can replicate how they interface, perhaps we can replicate it In software.
Imagine Apple car play as a primary display, as an installable magisk module.
That would solve the issues of Android crippling secondary displays for DRM. It would also hola many car units to be repurposed closer to their users need. But also help to minimize e-waste and unnecessary wasteful economic activity. Too much hardware goes to landfills because of lack of standardized interfaces for DIY upgrades.

That's what got me intrigued, how they manage to output to CarPlay! If it's purely software based then it might be ported.
I will try to get one of those to play around!
I have a idea for this little box. If I get or I figured out how to mimic ios for convince car head unit . I will install or creat mode for any android phone we had same configuration in our car low price.
Hope to see further developments of this Carplay AI
It solve the android HU poor sound quality and yet have fantastic experience of Android
Now this only runs on Android 7.

Is there anybody who can make custom rooted firmware?
Btw. It can be plugged to any Android phone/ tablet via Carlinkit Wried CarPlay Smart Link Dongle for Android https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33038683679.html
It works like in the car, it is good for playing with and installing in home.
Bluetooth is blocked only for phone connection. I plugged cheap BT dongle to the USB port of the AI box and now I can connect anything including of OBD2.
What is annoying is autohiding on-screen navigation panel. It would be better make the always visible navigation bar and all apks opening resized in the rest of the screen.
Generally it is pretty interesting and good working device.

did you had to install any other software to use the bt dongle? Or just plug it in and turn on Bluetooth on setting menu?
thanks!

I tried 3 different what I found at home and all work fine. No need to install any software or driver. These work: Gembird BTD-MINI5, Trust Bluetooth USB 4.0 Adapter , ASUS USB-BT400 . But I think you can try any.
One more thing: you need to access full settings to pair Bluetooth, I installed ADW launcher and there is access to all settings.
ADW Launcher 2 – Apps on Google Play
ADW Launcher 2, beyond tweaking your android desktop

ADW launcher would be fine set like default one. But they packed the factory launcher also with phone application, so you need to start both launchers. Then the Home button is launching factory launcher so it is better to use only the factory one. This would be solved by custom rom.

Thanks, I have ordered 2 seperate type of Bluetooth dongle. Will try later tonight.
just confirming you been able to connect a external devise (not your phone or a speaker/audio device) via Bluetooth? Where did you go in system setting to search for the Bluetooth devices?

Hi, I connected OBD2, also I tried to connect phone to this dongle, it works only for sound playing from the phone. Phone must be connected to the native BT for dialing and calling. You can use both BTs, native and dongle same time. Full android setting console is accessible when you run ADW launcher - there is a Setting icon among apks. Good luck with dongles.
Just received the BT dongle ($10 cheap ones). And it works perfectly fine!
thanks for all the help!
hopefully someone can make a customFirmware for this now. Also noticed the device already got Root access.

Hi I have this version of AI box
https://www.alibaba.com/product-det...a2756.order-detail-ta-ta-b.0.0.5abb2fc2wCcoEN
There is also rebranded version from Joyeauto with 4GB RAM, generally it is the same product:
https://www.joyeauto.com/mmb-multim...-for-the-cars-with-oem-factory-apple-carplay/
Joyeauto provides also download section for this device, where is a new ROM:
