Sorry to say but the answer is no. There is no known root path or exploit available to the public at this time for 4.4.2. The only option is an unlocked boot loader.
no downgrade to 4.4 possible?
no... bootloader in 4.4.2 is different from 4.4. check the threads... there's been many failures of bricked devices because of it.
unlock the bootloader. go pay that chinese guy the $40'ish bucks for the unlock code. got my code overnight. straight up and legit.
aldouse's info is correct.
I would just add one thing... paying ~$40 on the Chinese site selling unlock codes appears to no longer be an option. Seller is not responding. And rumor is that Moto caught up to the person.
Aw man I wish I knew about that seller while it worked. I would of loved to have done that. Looks like were SOL now OP

Yup. Unless you can sell your X on swappa, craigslist, ebay, etc... and use the money towards buying a Developer Edition X for Verizon.
Well, thanks for the help guys. If anything does come up please let me know. Thanks!!

No root ain't so bad on the x.
I think I have an idea for obtaining root on it...kind of use the stock recovery as the exploit

Oh, @Trpik4 btw, the Chinese Website/Middleman is back. See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
Honestly I haven't found a reason to root this device, it runs amazing. Probably the only thing I would end up doing it blocking ads and that doesn't support the content creators

Not straight up and legit. Stolen codes from moto! You want unlocked and root buy a ****ing developer edition. If everyone bought developer editions maybe carriers would be more likely to offer unlocked.

An exploit is highly unlikely. The Moto X bootloader is extremely secure. You may be able to get unlocked through the china middleman - see that thread for details.
Just bought one myself..great phone would love to root it.

You can root it now - see the PIE thread. Unfortunately, this is a partial root - no write access to /system and no custom recovery. Root is lost upon reboot and must perform procedure again. Still useful for things like Xposed and WiFi Tether....
The better option is to try to unlock the bootloader. Since you are using at XT1058 (I'm guessing AT&T branded?) your only option is the china middleman.
Good Luck

Sucks for those still nursing along unlimited data on Verizon. Pure edition isn't an option and some people aren't interested in a Shamu.
I don't mind the size of a phone. My previous was a note 3. But I am nursing my unlimited data lol
What does the Pure edition have to do with the unlimited data plan. I extended my unlimited data, and I can put any phone on it, can't I?
Motorola bootloaders are notoriously difficult to crack so I wouldn't count on it.
Wasn't there some middleman in China unlocking bootloaders on all the 2013 Moto phones? Does anyone know if that's still up or if it got shutdown?

I'd be happy with just root for the Verizon version. Is root dependent on bootloader unlocking at all?
Boot loader and root are independent but boot loader unlocking is needed IF you ever want to try Roms.

This potentially changes with lollipop. Currently root requires flashing a modified kernel which is only possible on unlocked bootloader.

Hello. I have an AT&T S5 that is currently unlocked and I am using it with T-Mobile. I would love to root it and put Cyanogenmod 11 on it, as I put it on my nexus 4 before this and loved it. they say on the http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Klte_Info page not to use this guide due to the boot image signing. Does anyone have any information/instructions on how to go about completing this? Thanks!

OK, so I dont want to sound rude so forgive me if I do. but a search in the forums would show you that CM/AOSP/AOKP will not run on an AT&T S5 due to locked bootloader

NO. Someone wont. You go right ahead and keep flashing files, your phone is going to die. I wouldn't be flashing just whatever to see if it works. That's not a very good idea.

OK, just to clear this up one last time.
1. We can not install custom kernels, Stock TW kernels are not compatible with CM/AOSP/AOKP ROM's
2. the flashing process although it will complete does not mean the ROM will run.
3. There is (currently) no way to circumvent these issues.
4. SafeStrap will NOT flash kernels only the file system.
Some S5 and S5A devices (international models, Tmobile, Sprint) to name a few have unlocked BootLoaders
those devices can and do run CM/AOSP/AOKP ROM's. AT&T has a Locked BootLoader
I really don't mean to sound condescending however this device is fast approaching it's first birthday and many many people have tried to run CM or CM derivitives on the AT&T device, there are tons of threads cluttering the development forums in regards to this issue continuing to attempt to install a CM Build and then posting here in the AT&T forums is at this time a pointless effort.
Using the search feature either ein Goolge or in the forums will provide all the answers you need.
Thank you,

In defense of the OP, it's pretty confusing that there's the Unified Development subforum which shows up under the AT&T section... I've been wondering why there's all these threads in a subforum to AT&T talking about installing all these roms that I know shouldn't work. I figured it was just something more involved than I'm comfortable with so I've ignored it. It seems like until the AT&T BL is unlocked that we shouldn't even have the Unified section linked here.

im merely pointing out that everything i have read has pointed to it being locked (not that it cant be unlocked mind you) AT&T rarely sends devices with the bootloader unlocked whether or not you can unlock them is a different story. i merely stated that "From what i had read" sorry for the confusion
EDIT: in fact here is the thread stating it comes from AT&T locked but is unlockable

Root is almost available for the DT but BL unlock is not guaranteed yet so no one can say if DT owners (like myself) will even be able to flash anything. Good question though.

Likely not. You can't just "swap ROMS" between a CDMA device and a GSM device.

Were those turbos XT1250s? Because nothing has been shown about someone working on BL unlock for the DT (XT1254)......yet. but ofc the XT1250s are already unlocked but not the XT1254s which is the model I believe he was asking about.

Probably not this simple, but if we get root maybe the bootloader from one of these prototypes can be copied to a turbo using a dd command. Then we would all have unlocked bootloaders

That would not work because it is not signed by moto. The ONLY things that matter are: 1) Signed vs unsigned packages and 2) bootloader exploits. Some BL exploits require root, most do now since they have gotten advanced. I miss the days of hardware level exploits and stuff. No more though. Root will likely be needed for a BL unlock and I would assume once root drops people will start working on one. Jcase has unlocked many motos and I would assume he will work on one when he has time (he is sick and very busy).
So root will not allow a BL unlock by itself. I am not even sure if this root exploit removes /system write protection. Some don't. We just have to wait and see.
I was busy last week, but if there will be BL unlock for Verizon Droid Turbo, then I'll make the CM12 / CM12.1 universal.

If you dump the package yourself I would imagine it would no longer have the same check sum no? Jcase has said this about many devices and then out of nowhere released exploits. I am not asking him to, I am just saying he enjoys doing this and is really, really good at it. I can see him collaborating with the root author to develop a proper exploit if it does not already exist. Either way, this root probably won't be released for another few weeks, if ever.

No, if you dump the bootloader yourself, it will be signed with the exact same certificates as when it was compiled. As a quick demonstration, take a device (not the Turbo) and download a custom kernel for it.
Check (and make note of) the MD5 checksum. Then install it.
Boot it once or twice, messing around with it. Then dump it (via
Code:
dd if="/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot" of="/sdcard/boot.img"
) and compare the MD5 of your dumped image to that of the one that had not yet been installed. Zero difference.
