When using an earphond with microphone via the USB C dongle, the mic is not working for me.
Tried the stock dongle and a different one. Same result.
Can anyone share your experience? Is there a solution?
Try other earphones. I have no problem with my old Beats and original dongle.
We have the same issue. My headset works fine in ky other phone. Maybe the dongle is defective?
the audio is abit soft when connected to the type c converter.. hw to make it louder ?
I have the same problem with my akg from the Samsung galaxy S8
This dongle stuff is borderline retarded, to find out more try reading some stuff like this: https://www.androidcentral.com/usb-c-audio
I am having the similar issue, I was using aux in my car with my old mi5s and it worked perfectly, now when I try using the dongle that cam with my phone it doesn't work, it works with some of the headphones but not with the car

Well i bought a diferent brand (kz) and the mic works just fine.
I'm facing a similar problem. And I'm guessing that it boils down to the wiring of the jack within the dongle. I just learned that there are two international wiring standards for audio jacks ( OMTP and CTIA ) and sometimes companies do it one way or the other.. Adapters that fix this are cheap and small enough, but in my case, I don't have one ready to test.

Did you already have test one of adapters you are talking about?
I suggest you buy this adapter. Tested by me on Sony headphones and mic + remote button work flawlessly. Given that it has a DAC and converts the signal, any headphones should work.
I haven't tried any headset from the dongle but I can attest that the sound quality is quite good for a variety of headphones. I have a ATH-M50X, a legendary headphone of 38 ohms, and the Mi8 moves it effortlessly. Also I have compared the sound to my Audinst hud-mx1 desktop dac/amp and there is only, apart from the bigger power capacity, a bit of improved sound quality. Good bass and highs, it is only a bit thin in the midrange. The dongle is a passive adaptor, the dac and amp chip is inside the phone. (Qualcomm Aqstic WCD9340).

I've just ordered a couple of PC games that I can no longer play on my PS3 (since it died and I bought a slim one as a replacement - they're old PS2 games) and want to use the PS3 controller to play them. I've seen all over the place that it's easy to do so now I'm just left with the fact that my PC doesn't have bluetooth. I've never needed it, so it's never been an issue until now.
I just wondered if anyone has any experience with the cheap dongles that are all over ebay. You can get them for as little as £1.46 (in the current listing), but I obviously wonder about reliability and quality at that price. If they work for a year and then die then fair enough. I just want to know where I stand with them.
Incidentally, I want to do this on the cheap. I'm not a cheapskate, but I did just buy a 10" Galaxy Tab a few weeks ago and a car last week. I'm not made of money you know!
Thanks

Interesting. I didn't realise you could use it cabled as well. I'll give that a go tonight. I do still want to go down the bluetooth route for the long-term though as I just prefer to have as few cables as possible.

Okay, Well it seems the PS3 Controller uses a "CLASS 2" Bluetooth Chip, Which means, Only CLASS 2 chips will work with it.
CLASS 1 has a Bluetooth distance of 100m (average)
CLASS 2 has a Bluetooth distance of 30m (average)
Hope that helps while buying one!

Yeah, thanks. I was aware it's bluetooth 2 - I don't think bluetooth 1 was fast enough, hence most companies' choice to go with radio instead.
Yeah, we're talking at cross purposes. You can actually mix classes, especially if range is not an issue (as it's not in this case). I was obviously talking about versions, as you pointed out.
I purchased 2 Nexus 7 tablets from Google and both appear to have the same manufacturing defect; if you insert a headphone/mic, the headphone works fine but the external mic does not. Perhaps a solder joint is bad in both receptacles. I wanted to use the tablet for Skype and SIP so I am returning both units.
Does the 3.5mm Jack even support microphone? Haven't been keeping up.
Yes, various posts as well as Google support have confirmed that it should work.
My N7 only has 1 channel coming out of the headphones. I tested the headphones and they definitely work. I don't have headphones that have a mic so I can't test if that works tho.
I have the same issue of the sound only coming out of 1 side on the headphones. I've tested multiple headphones on different units and it's the nexus 7 which I will be exchanging this coming Sunday.
I haven't had an issue with my headphones at all - crisp sound out of both ears. The microphone on the unit works as well (haven't had a chance to try out the wired ones). The only gripe I have about sound is that I wish the speakers were a bit louder, but a slight handcup on the back normally takes care of that!
Mine doesn't work.

Did you hear a loud click when you put your headphones in?
If not, ram it in HARD. It's seriously the tightest headphone jack I've ever seen...
Just to be (crystal) clear, it is the external mic input that is not working. The internal mic works fine. This may not be important to you if you never intend to use a headphone/mic. What is happening on my defective units is that the jack is not cutting out the internal mic and connecting the external mic so when you do a test make sure that the input is in fact coming from the external mic (tap on the external mic to be sure).
I don't think it supports the mic through the 3.5mm jack. I just tried a few headsets i have and none of them worked with the mic.
Where did you see any reference to the mix being enabled to the headphones jack?
Thanks.
Google support says it does but then maybe they don't know what they are talking about? I have seen others say that it works but I am dubious as to whether they have actually tested it. Could someone else confirm that it works (or doesn't)? It could be that many units have this defect or it could be that it was never intended to work.
It's probably the same design-flaw problem the original iPhone had. Probably only fixable with a special adapter jack.
That would certainly be nice to know before I return these supposedly defective units. Any have such an adaptor that could test this theory?

I'm curious about this too. I was just about to contact Google for the same reasons until I found this thread.
I've spent the last hour looking for adapters and cannot find anything.
I want to use the Nexus 7 for multitrack recording but cannot seem to get the microphone working either, it's driving me nuts. I've heard that Jelly Bean supports usb microphones but I can't get mine to work.
I may send the N7 back and get a replacement as the speaker also distorts at around 40% volume, I think the speakers must be blown in this one I have. Such a pity people have been having issues with them.
I wrote to the iFixit folks who did the teardown on the Nexus 7 to see if they could provide a definitive answer as to whether the jack is wired to accommodate an external mic or not.
mic using beats tours is confirmed to be working.

Good thinking they could know.
Thought mine was working but on unit mic was just picking up the noise rather than the headset.
That was an ipod headset though.

Is this perpetual recaptcha every time I post just because I've not posted much on here as it's a real irritant
Based on these replies (one working unit is enough to prove it should work) and the number of people who say their external mic is not working, I believe that Google/Asus may have a mass defect in the units they have been shipping.
I just posted a thread about this (I did search before creating, and didn't see anyone with my problem), but this post matches my symptoms.
I am having the exact same problem. My headset jack works for headphones, but when plugging in a headset, it treats it like headphones. the mic on the tablet is still working when the headset it plugged in.

i think this as well, but the ones that are saying it is working, are they absolutely positive that the tablet mic isn't what's picking up their voice?
any easy test would be to do the skype test call, say "test 1" directly into the headset mic away from tablet, then "test 2" into the tablet mic. on the playback, you should be able to determine which mic is the one that is working since it should be much louder.
Another note... the little pamphlet guide that comes with the tablet describes the jack as a "headset" jack, not "headphone" jack. if it does not support a mic, that would be a typo.
Hi!!
I'm very intrigued to galaxy note 9 due to the fact it works with HP lap dock based on a YouTube video I watched..
Is anyone here having HP Lapdock?
Can you share whether the audio & USB C port on the right side works when note 9 is connected to it?
Till now, I'm using a S8 with S9 ported ROM in it, and the sound, TouchPad, and USB C port on the right side doesn't work (except for charging).
If note 9 enables all those features, I'll be gladly changing my phone again for it. If not, I'll stick to my S8 and just buy a Tab S4.
Also, here is the YouTube link I mentioned :

I really hoped the sound system works, unlike using it on hacked dex system on older devices..
I just got my Note9 yesterday and I can confirm that it does work with the HP Lapdock flawlessly. I attached a video (sorry for the terrible quality, I usually don't do videos and thought it helps confirm it with proof). If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
watch?v=Catf9nqi2xE (Just made this account to reply and since I don't have enough posts, I can't post the link fully)
Everything seems to work (speakers, trackpad, keyboard, etc.). The only thing that I saw that was a little finicky was that the right/left click on the trackpad is a hit or miss so you may just have to double tap on the track pad for it to read as a click.
Edit: I think this sort of makes the TabS4 semi-obsolete, assuming you don't mind carrying an extra cable or something for charging (since I don't know the battery life using the hp lapdock - haven't tested it fully).
I have a lap dock, The lap dock confirmed to have the latest firmware T0059 - but the issue of black screen and constantly rebooting is persistent. Tried with several devices (Huawei P20 Pro, 2 Galaxy Note 9 -both Exynos, and the HP Elite X3 phone). Only with the Elite phone it worked as expected, keyboard worked fine too.
With Android devices, it was not working and although you could see the keyboard working fine, the screen kept between showing the HP logo then black screen the rebooting.
This is all tested using the wired mode and connecting via the usb-c port on the left of the lap dock. Tested also with several cables, some of them confirmed to be Thunderbolt USB-C 3.1 (Gen 2).

Its normal for a phone with a small microphone, its not really built for this type of tasks. What I usually do for my band videos is getting an external microphone the BOYA BYMM1 is cheap and a copy of the Rode Video Mic and it does a pretty good job
This is crap. I knew it was a good idea to sell my p20pro . There is no external mic for micro usb type c . That the "small" mic is a problem is nonesense. Newer iphones (the old were also bad) and nokia phones can handle loud and bassy sound excellent. Im no technician but i think its a softwareproblem too. Nokia and apple phones detect high soundpressure and autmatically lower the sensitivity. With my 8 year old nokia 808 i can stand literally IN the speaker and the sound was crystal clear. And the videoquality was by far better than ANY phone (except panasonic cm1) . Hoping for the nokia hmd penta cam phone to be sth good

I am wondering how much of a downgrade(if at all) would this device be compared to my LG V20. The most I was able to find was int the GSMArena review, "the phone has a 24-bit/192kH DAC with Hi-Res audio support", but no actual comment on how it performs.
Has anyone tried to pair this device with a pair the ROG 2 with a good pair of headphones? How did it sound? Was it able to power high impedance headphones? If it is - does it have an arbitrary "low impedance mode" that can make it sound underwhelming with headphones that fall just under that limit?(It's a pretty annoying issue with my V20)
Not much help for your questions, but I don't believe it has a dedicated amplifier for the headphone jack, which may not drive high-end headphones.

Actually, GSMArena did make an interesting comment about the audio output:
"Unfortunately, our review unit came with a disclaimer that the frequency response reading my suffer from a bug with the audio output which is on its was to be fixed via a software update before the phone becomes available."
And AndroidAuthority also expressed similar concerns:
"The inclusion of the headphone port is great, but it’s not the best jack we’ve ever seen in terms of quality. Our testing showed a lesser frequency response than the competition, so keep that in mind if you require tip-top audio."
I'd also be interested to know how much this impacts the actual listening experience.
And I hope this is really just a SW issue, which will be patched later on...

I had a Note 9.
The DAC on the Note 9 wasn't bad but IMO the ROG II DAC is lighter, clearer and less distorted.
It definitely is a different sound tho.
I thought the note 9 Snapdragon version sounded equally as good as LG G8's quad HD dac on Shure SE846. ROG sounds slightly grainy or harsher, not sure since I don't have those 2 phones with me anymore to compare. Nothing jumps out at me saying there is something that sounds wrong which is good.

This phone's DTS equalizer thing messes with the stereo of the music and most of the tracks sound wonky. The sound goes up and down for some instruments. I tried disabling the Audio Wizard app but still the same result. I'm on the latest WW Rom on my Tencent Edition.

Is there a way to completely remove AudioWizard? Or can it be permanently disabled?
I really like this phone but I listen to music a lot, with wired or bluetooth headphones. Using wired I can just connect an external USB C DAC and amp. However I have heard that AudioWizard also affects bluetooth connections? That seems very strange as bluetooth headphones have their own DAC and amp...
