Trouble updating Samsung Messages - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

I was having trouble with Samsung Messages, so I uninstalled all updates. Now I'm trying to get back to the latest version, but the only version that will install, is 5.0.21.18. When I try updating to any version past that, I keep getting Installation Failed. Anyone know why this is happening?

not that I'm trying to derail your question, but why do you like Samsung messages over Google's Android messages? I have found a much better experience with Android Messages.

Honestly, I don't even know if I like Samsung Messages. I was just testing it out, had some problems, uninstalled updates, and now the app won't update.

Google Mail problem

Hope this isn't already covered somewhere on the forums, I've had a search but couldn't see anything. I've noticed since the last couple of Cyan updates that my gmail app doesn't seem to be working correctly. if i read a mail on my phone it's not marked as read on the web version and the number of unread mails still includes these on the phone. eg if i get three new mails and read them all on my phone, wait a while and get one more message, the app shows 4 unread mails in the statusd bar but only one in the app itself. if i look in the web version of gmail, all 4 are marked as unread. not exactly earth shattering, but a bit annoying.
the more serious problem is that i can't seem to send emails from my phone anymore. as soon as i hit send (either new mail of reply) it just sits there saying 'sending...' until i get bored and delete it 3 days later. the messages definitely don't get sent as i've tried tesating to myself.
Had a look arou nd the internet and I've seen people with mails showing as 'sending...' but actually being sent. that i could cope with, but this is beginning to get on my wick. I've had to temporarily more to the normal email app - works fine from there, but gmail is much nicer.
any ideas?
FYI I'm on a UK Vodafone HTC Magic 32B running Cyanogen 4.2.5 - last resort is going to be a full wipe and install from the ground up, but I don't want to have to re-download all my apps (not on SD as I've only got a class 2 16gb)
Well if you dont wanna do a full wipe, which would be required for the the other solution found, you can flash my theme template over here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584521
which replaces the google apps, which should hopefully fix it
please make a nandroid backup before flashing just in case
thanks mate, i'll give it a whirl.
Tell us if it works! I hope it does lol
hmm... weirdly it just made it worse
tried a few reboots to make sure i wasn't going nuts, but since the update gmail won't even open. no FC or anything the screen fades out in the groovy eclair way and then goes straight back to the desktop. thought it might be something to do with not being sync'd (which i think it might be) but the sync menu iten does nothing. click on it and it doesn't drop to the sub-menu.
just restoring my backup now. thanks for the help though - any other ideas?
think a fix_permissions might help after flashing your template? completely forgot to have a go. the lack of error messages or FCs makes me think it probably won't
No if it didnt work dont reflash it. can you pull a logcat after attempting to send an email? i have a feeling its due to not resolving google.com as ive seen in many logcats.
hmm. tried again with a fix permissions and the same problem again. maybe chucking it out of a window will help... bloomin' technology...
thanks, i'll try a logcat later on (work pc at the mo, so can't track it from there)
well I've solved it in a more or less painless way. used backup for root users, wiped and installed 4.2.5 from scratch and restored my backup. gmail is now working properly. there seems to be a bit of an issue with backup for root users where some apps are showing as installed on the market but aren't on my handset, so i can't actually install them again (uninstall and open are both greyed out on the market app). only a couple of them though and nothing as vital as gmail, so i'll put up with it i think
Yes that was the actual solution, reflashing the ADP image and cyan. Using backup for root users is good and that market problem has been there for a while relating to cyans rom. I dont remember seeing a solution for it. I just realized that you may have been able to just restore your data.img from your nandroid after reflashing ADP and cyan and been able to preserve your data.
thanks. might give that a go tonight. as it is, it's only taskiller full, bump and bloo that I'm missing, so i've installed taskiller lite, blabber and ignored bump. ity seems whenever they get an update in the market it reinstalls correctly (that's how i got my calendar back), so i'm just waiting for them to get updated. was thinking about pulling the apks out of my nandroid image and then intalling them into the corrected version.

[Q] Dialer? (NOT asking how to make calls in the US)

I've been messing around with my SGT SCH-1800, I've had no problems wiping it, flashing it, etc. I checked out SpaceMoose's alpha port of Honeycomb last night (gah, that theme is DARK).
I reflashed back to stock and restored my backed up apps, no biggie. My issue is, I forgot to unroot before attempting to install the EC02 update and it failed, and now my SGT says it's already up to date when I know damn well it's not. I know it'll check again in 3-4 days but I'd like the update now so I can reroot.
On the internet there's a hint that allows you to force an update check by dialing #*#*CHECKIN*#*# in the dialer, but since I've got the neutered US version, the dialer is disabled. Is there any way to either a) enable the use of the dialer even though I can't and do not intend to actually make calls or b) trigger the update check some other way?
Thanks in advance.
Funny, never heard of the checkin.
Ps it's the other way around" *#*#checkin#*#*
Mine gave only "checkin succeeded" in the not.bar.
Try T9-dialer app from the market.

Stock Messages app crashes on one contact?

Hey everyone, I've been having a problem with the stock htc message app. It usually works fine, but there's one person where I try to open their thread and it will get stuck loading and never load. After I try that one person, it will then freeze on loading for every other person until I reboot the phone. Getting to that persons thread works fine in Handcent and Go SMS, but I'm not a huge fan of them and would much rather stick to stock. I've backed up my messages, deleted, and restored twice now with no luck. Can anyone help me with this?

facebook problem.

I gave my mum my xperia x8 a few years ago. and even when I had it, facebook just wouldn't work at all. it just says connection lost tap to retry and nothing happens.
I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, clearing all data etc also tried different apk's and it still does the same to this day.
does anyone know why? my mum is having to use the browser version which is also rubbish.
the phone is running stock android 2.1 and it is rooted.
I'm not using Facebook, but I would presume that it should be working properly being one of the stock apps you received with your phone. Why it doesn't work, I wouldn't know. Might be that some of the newer updates screwed it up.
Some solutions come to mind:
1. Try a Facebook replacement app - I've seen people mention FriendCaster on numerous occasions, but there are others.
2. Try a hard reset - reflash the stock ROM.
3. Flash a newer ROM - something along the lines of 2.2 or 2.3.
My recommendation would be that you flash a newer ROM along with installing a replacement app.
Hi,
Facebook app itself is having issue.. its very slow and i faced same problem. Its better to try other replacement apps.
Me too,my facebook keep force close and freeze all time, now im using friedcaster too.
Use your Facebook account by przrzeglądarkę Opera Mobile or Opera Mini,i just do the standard android 2.1 from sony.

Apps Incompatible with Current System Version

Good day, this notif has just appeared to me recently and I do not know why. Whenever I download, whenever I update.
It prompts me, App incompatible with current system version. I do not know what triggered it but its annoying.
No it doesn't prohibit me fron using my app, yes I can still use my apps even if I update em. New downloaded apps works too. But that prompt is just annoying.
Could anyone help me regarding this as I have searched google and found answers / solutions that were not working for me.
Thanks
did u fix it bro>?
I'm having the same issue. It just started recently after resetting all app preferences in main settings. Nothing different other then the annoyance. Is there maybe a way to block the one particular notification?
Same issue here. Any fix?
same for me with my rooted phone. Is there a solution?
