Ok I'm a bit confused after some searching so I'm hoping someone can answer my question directly. I just bought and received a new Moto x4 and it's this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077YNYFPD/
I've read tons of comments that you can't unlock the bootloader, and hence cannot root, if it's the Amazon version of the phone. Well the one I linked is on Amazon and the description is:
Moto X (4th Generation) - with Amazon Alexa hands-free – 32 GB - Unlocked – Super Black - Prime Exclusive
So if the Amazon version means it's bought from Amazon or that it has the Alexa stuff on it then I'd assume I can't unlock the bootloader and can't root. However... I also read that the XT1900-1 model IS rootable and that is the model I have.
Can anyone enlighten me because if I can't root this unit it's going straight back to Amazon.
Thank you for providing me with a clue.

Amazon version is carrier unlocked, but has locked bootloader. Unfortunately.
XT1900-1 is for the US.
I would return it, and get the retail or Fi version.

Thank you very much sir for the confirmation and I've already boxed up the phone and put in the return order. I believe I need the 4th Generation version of the phone as I plan to put it on Verizon. That being said, and I know this is asking more than I should, could you possibly link me to the proper x4 for me to purchase? I'm not asking you to shop around for a good price I'd just like to get the right phone that I can root and put on Verizon from a reliable vendor without making any more mistakes.
Even without the link I can't thank you enough for cutting through the fog of confusion surrounding my brain. Thank you sir once again. Most appreciated.

This is the one I bought:
https://fi.google.com/about/specs/#android-one-moto-x4
Best Buy used to sell the Retail version at the same $249, but it appears to have gone up. Exactly same hardware, but the Fi version is a bit more "pure", as it is an Android One phone. You can actually swap the firmware between the 2.
I just immediately paused the Fi service, so I am not paying for the service. I am sure it works in all US carriers. Someone on Verizon may want to chime in.

Great advice and I'm just about to follow in your footsteps. I've got the phone up and I'm likely to order. I'm going to throw a couple of questions at you which you may or may not be able to answer:
1. Can I turn off the OTA updates? I now know that's a selling point for Android One, constant updates, but personally I like to get my phone just how I want it and freeze it.
2. Can I run the xposed framework with this Android One phone?
No big deal if you can't answer as I'll probably order it anyway but it doesn't hurt to ask. Thank you again Oh Professor of the Moto x4!
OK I couldn't wait and went ahead with the purchase. Chaching! Couldn't have done it without you Mr jhedfors. Can't thank you enough sir.

Yes. There is a toggle to turn off automatic updates in Developer Options (tapping build number a bunch of times enables the Developer Options menu).

I bought a used AT&T Moto X and it's on 4.4.2. Is it possible to root this (maybe through downgrading first), or do I need one of the unlocked versions of the phone?

unless an exploit comes out in the future (but i think everybody is pessimistic about this), the locked versions can't downgrade and can't root 4.4.2.
so you need either an unlocked version, or a locked version pre-4.4.2
And no....don't downgrade. You could easily brick your phone.

If on a plan, you could try to sell it anyway, and put that towards dev edition.....or live without root...or return it.

Ah good idea... selling it new.
Actually I'm not sure I need root. I only rooted my S3 to get rid of touchwiz, but this stock android might be ok. Only app I use that needs root is file manager and drivedroid. And I want to disable the camera shutter sounds
I'd like to put CM11 on there but looks like motox isn't well supported by CM anyway.

The Moto x definitely doesn't need to be rooted, but you may regret it later if you can't.
Good luck with whatever you do.
Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I wasn't planning on rooting this phone either, but then I came across Gravity Box. Sell the phone new and get an unlocked one.

No one is really in the market for a moto x unless you sell it for dirt cheap. You don't really need to root this device it's great without but even better with root. You can disable the camera shutter sound from the camera menu. Es file explorer is a great alternative? But if you want return it and get the T-Mobile version its unlocked. This phone has been really great.
MOTO X
Why are all pessimistic that manage to get root on a closed bootloader version from AT & T?
Why do these companies do not sell at least an opportunity to get open bootloader? What do they lose?
I miss perekllyuchatelya regimes in 2G, 3G, and other other joys ...
I bought my Moto X directly from Motorola (not subsidized from AT&T) for use with AT&T. I did not opt for the slightly costlier DEV model, so is this thread telling me my personal property cannot ever be unlocked to be used somewhere else?

Pretty much...
Don't confuse bootloader unlock with SIM-Unlock though.
You can pay a small fee and get your AT&T X unlocked to use on other GSM carriers....AT&T also might provide you with the code if you meet certain criteria. Bootloader unlock is another story. AT&T forbids Motorola from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones. Currently the ONLY possibility for unlocking the bootloader on an AT&T X is through the China Middleman.
Apologizes if any (or all) of this is redundant.

Thanks, I pretty much figured in this day and age that the SIM could be unlocked or I'd have bought the unlocked one to start with. What bothers me most is I do not use/abuse root on any of the devices I own and am only interested in doing so on my X to run the Titanium Backup app I purchased to run on my older phone. I guess I knew back then the app needed root to run but since that used to never be an issue due to the collective experience I have at my fingertips here at XDA-Developers.com. it never dawned on my that a day would come where root would be taken away from me never to be returned.
i'm on Sprint with a Galaxy S3 ... thinking of switching to Republic Wireless on a Moto X.
1. Can I root the phone?
2. Can I flash any custom ROMs? Which ones will work with Republic?
3. Existing Republic customers -- are you happy with the service/phone?
4. Does it come with KitKat? Is it pretty much AOSP vanilla, or bloated?
Thanks!

You would have to hope you can still buy a bootloader unlock code from the guy in China. Or else you will not be able to root. Assuming it comes with 4.4.2, which it probably will now. And the guy selling codes for 45 could stop anytime. Or he may not be able to unlock yours. It will be a gamble.
I'd suggest you pay outright for a dev edition. Then you're good to go.

Otherwise, good chance RW 4.4.2 phones will never be rooted.

The phone can be unlocked if you BUY the unlock code. Mine personally is unlocked from the first go around.
To answer your questions:
1) If you order the phone and receive it running 4.2.2, then yes, you can root the phone, then safestrap and upgrade to 4.4.2 using the guide in the General section. If you receive the phone running 4.4.2 then your only hope is to unlock your bootloader via the China middleman.
2)There are no custom ROMs that support the custom software that RW bakes into their ROM to make their services work. If your bootloader is unlocked, you can flash all you want, just won't work as a cellphone.
3)I love the Moto X and RW service. Sprint is not always the best, but I get coverage most everywhere I travel, plus I get WiFi in most everywhere I go.
4)For now, new phones bought directly from RW should still come running 4.2.2 until their stock runs out. Don't know what a new phone from Motomaker would come with. Their KK ROM is generally debloated aside from all of Googles apps and HPs Printer plugin.
Thanks for the info ...
Does anyone know ...
1. if I buy a Moto X straight from motomaker, or used on craigslist ... can I flash it with the Republic ROM?
2. If I buy a Republic moto ... can I later flash it to use with a Simple Mobile SIM card?
thanks
You won't be flashing anything that requires a custom recovery if you get either with 4.4.2 installed, cause you won't have root. Or an unlocked bootloader. Unless you get lucky and the unlock codes are still available for 45 dollars and your phone is in his list.
That's what I was trying to say previously.
OK, but what if I get a Moto from Motorola ... which I assume is easily rootable ... can I then flash the Republic ROM on to it?

You may need to confirm with a google search, but yes.
There's only one north american model of the n5, and it works on most any carrier, except Verizon apparently.
---------- Post added at 03:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:28 PM ----------
I would google "nexus 5 [carrier name]" to see if out works on the specific carrier you want.
I've been planning on the Moto X from Republic Wireless. It sounds like from Moto Maker they are coming with 4.4.2, so I can only hope the guy selling codes is still doing so and can unlock mine, otherwise wait and pray they find a way to unlock 4.4.2 on RW..
If not, I hope I can live with a generally stock phone.. It does seem like the Moto X is pretty good all around as it is, so maybe it won't be so bad :fingers-crossed:
I have used RW for about 2 or 3 months and I am planning to switch to something like T-mobile for various reasons. all the reasons that annoy me enough to switch are somewhat small stuff but that's just me.
the reasons are: no emoji support, no 3rd party texting app supported fully (texting works mms doesn't), slower than the rest software updates (we got our 4.4.2 update, if I'm not mistaken, last), and my biggest annoyance with them is not allowing me to unlock my phone (but I eventually did it anyways).
I also feel like they don't listen to the community as much as they should but they sure as hell listen to it more than a big carrier.
anyways that' just my opinion, I might add a few things to this list if I think of them.
Was really considering the phone, but Telus sells the 16GB one. And I am not sure how they will cripple Moto's fast updates. Any Canadian owners, leave your thoughts. I am better off going with the Pure Version?
The only thing telus has done with their moto x is the branding in the status bar and a shortcut to the mytelus account Web app
I don't expect them to take long for other updates.
Mine didn't even come with the Telus MyAccount app at all? It seems like there's actually nothing here (locked phone aside)
The "My Telus" app is in the play store. There really isn't anything on the phone that should delay the update. Part of telus' marketing for this phone has been something along these lines: Pure Style, pure performance with the fastest updates. Im expecting to get the update at the same time as the pure edition or maybe after a few days of network testing.
---------- Post added at 11:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:18 AM ----------
You can actually remove the TELUS branding in status bar form network settings if you want.
Telus
According to the model number XT1097 the telus model is sold in a number of countries. There really isn't any carrier specific software on this phone. Only place telus is shown is in the APN settings.
Coming from the Galaxy S4 which was also 16gb I really like this phone. It doesn't have a SD card but I didn't really use the SD card I had in the S4 other than for music.

If money is no object then the pure edition might be something to look at provided your going to go to a 32gb phone. So far my understanding between the XT1097 and the pure edition is only storage capacity difference and unlocked boot loader but I did read in the development section that someone with a XT1097 used the same method to unlock his boot loader on the Telus model which means it only comes down to having extra storage. If anyone knows of other differences please tell us.
The other way to decide is look at your current phone and if you still have enough storage capacity on it then the Telus one should work for you.

I have been on ios for the last 5 years or so, bought the telus bamboo yesterday and i have already unlocked and rooted. The forum for me as a new android user was pretty strait forward and easy to comprehend and the pure method did indeed do the trick on my xt1097. If you are still undecided, i would recommend it and can testify to the effectiveness of the pure method as well as its ease.
With not a whole lot of convincing, I talked them into an additional incentive on a 2 yr so I not only didn't pay for it, but ended up with a negative balance on my bill. hehe
Hope that helps.

I bought a used Telus XT-1097 the other day, if not for that I was wanting the Pure edition as well as it is clearly the best model to buy. End of the day buying one locally that was like new for a fair price was just way easier then trying to get a US prepaid Visa. I didn't need to but I sim unlocked it for fun, it was less then 3 bucks for the code.
Will likely bootloader unlock and root after I've given it a really good test/workout.

End of the day buying one locally that was like new for a fair price was just way easier then trying to get a US prepaid Visa. I didn't need to but I sim unlocked it for fun, it was less then 3 bucks for the code.
Will likely bootloader unlock and root after I've given it a really good test/workout.

Hi @Steve-x,
Can I ask where you bought the sum unlock code from? I checked cellunlocker.net and they quoted me $15?!
Cheers!

You might want to wait until you get teh update before rooting and unlock boot loader.... seems I read in a few threads you have to flash back to a stock image to get the update....... unless of course your planning on flashing the XT1095 image.. but I'd research that first too...

Yeah, I have been waiting so far. It doesn't look too bad though. With 4.4.4 the unroot option in SuperSU should handle things just fine, then flash stock recovery back. The only two things I really want are ad blocking and to enable the green light to indicate when the phone is charging. Might also do a custom boot animation, again easy to undo.
Is there anything I should know? Anyone have any thoughts? I am coming from the s5.
It would be nice to have a phone on verizon with official lineage os support, but there are limited options.
My questions before I purchase.
Is there xposed support for whatever android version is current on this phone?
What kind of nonsense do I need to go through to get the unlocked amazon version working on verizon?
What kind of roms are favored on this phone?
After some research, I am learning that the amazon version can't be bootloader unlocked, but the one direct from moto can be. Is this correct?
Amazon version can't be rooted or bootloader unlocked.

Cool, is there a retailer with a good return policy I can buy it from? I am sure it would be a pain to return it to motorola if I buy from them and don't like it.

not sure about that buddy. Best buy sells it, Moto on ebay sells it, Newegg sells it.

Most good sellers allow returns within a certain time period (and as long as you don't damage it). Check the listing description or message the seller. I got mine from here last year mint condition about $100 below Motorola retail.
Get the Android One version via Project Fi
I also came from a S5 and am thoroughly enjoying this phone. No restrictions on unlocking the bootloader (it is a setting you can enable/disable). Android One version is very bare bones. Battery life is great so I don't really miss the replaceable battery.
Project Fi is 1/2 the price that AT&T was (not including the rebates that had my bill at $40 for a few months) and it will get even cheaper when our two phones are paid off. Bonus is that you can block callers from leaving voicemails OR texting you via Project Fi's blocked caller list - this is something that I don't think AT&T or Verizon do.
