Broken screen. Halp - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
The glass of my Nexus 6 broke 4 weeks ago and until now the screen was working well but from yesterday is completely dead (device and touch still work)
What I need to buy to fix this? (lcd panel, digitalizer, glass)
^ sorry for the crappy quality

The easiest is to buy a complete display assembly. That includes glass and amoled panel mounted together, preferably with the frame as well. Expect to pay around 70 dollars if you buy from China.
You may need new glue for the back - you can buy a cut out sheet of glue, or just a new back with glue on, it's not expensive.
My display assembly came without the speaker covers (the two tiny plastic bars). I transfered the old ones, but you can also buy them new.

Changing a broken screen

I will soon be opening up my phone (T-mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition) to replace the glass screen with a new one ordered online. I've never even opened the phone before and was wondering if someone has performed this operation before. I would really appreciate any pointers, tricks, cautions, pictures, etc.
Thanks.
lawrence... where did u get the replacement??
i wonder if they got replacement cases! i chiped mine
The company I bought the screen from was GetHighTech, Inc, in California. By coincidence, they are about an hour's drive away from my home.
They only sell the glass screen and high capacity battery replacements. The screen comes with absolutely no documentation or instructions. I just got it a few minutes ago.
just wanted to see if you had any luck with the changeout.
Screen replaced successfully: observations
It was a tricky operation, but I finally managed to replace my broken touch screen. And the patient is alive, and only a little worse off for the experience.
I was held back for a week until I could get the right size torx screwdrivers to remove the back cover. Once inside, it was a very very tricky process slicing off the broken screen with a razor blade. It was glued to the lcd display. This would have been hard even if the screen was not shattered. Definitely needed goggles to protect against flying splinters of glass. I used cotton swabs and 99% alcohol to clean the glass dust off the glue around the edges of the lcd, then I put the new screen on while that residual gum was still a bit tacky.
There was a very thin existing plastic cover over the lcd in between the glass touch screen and the rest of the lcd. Since it did not come off with the glass, I left it in place even though it had a couple of small scratches from contact with the broken glass. It seems like it was there to keep dust off the lcd or something like that.
This was my first time inside the phone. I noticed that replacing the whole LCD component would have been a trivial task by comparision to replacing the glass alone. And even easier would have been adding a new battery.
cracked lcd on xda
hi, does anybody know where i can get a replacement for the lcd screen on my xda... its totally mashed and i need to unlock it but the screen is bad...

I replaced my touchscreen a few weeks ago. Like Lawrence said it's a little tricky and you need to be patient.
I bought my touchscreen from www.pdasmart.com/pdaphone.htm for $75 and they gave great instructions.
thank you for your kind answer
hmmm, seems like it is nice to live in US ... where all the things for XDA are almost readily available

Protective Acryclic Cover over the Digitizer
I have an odd problem. I have an SX56 with a broken protective cover. The protective cover is the acrylic sheet that sits between the digitizer and the outside world. Everything else works fine including the digitizer. I have found every replacement part except that cover. I've even tried local plastic stores. They don't carry the proper thickness (0.125mm).
Any thoughts or sources besides sending it in for a $200 repair?

Replacement used screen?

Hi y'all.
I am devestated. This morning my N1 hit cement. The glass is cracked in the bottom right corner and on the top left. It doesnt affect usability, but definitely affects me.
I was looking for replacement glass on ebay. There are glass/digitizers combo but they dont seem to be made by HTC. I have 3 questions
1) Do the glass/digitizers on ebay perform well?
2) Is it possible to swap in a used screen from a dead N1? DO i need the adhesive strips etc
3) DOes anyone have glass to sell?
thank you all. I am an adult man, and I am honestly really bumbed
Does anyone have any experience with this supplier?

Anyone actually done a glass swap? How was it?
no one? halp

1. Yes. I have purchased 7 for mytouch 4g from ebay and amazon with no issues (they work). I got 1 that had 0.15mm (I'm talkinreally small) bubble but it caused no issue and could only be seen by close inspection with the screen off
2. yes...from a dead N1 I would think it easier to swap the main board and avoid lcd/touchscreen removal from the frame...if you remove the lcd/touchscreen from the frame an adhesive (3m double stick tape is commonly used) will be needed.....place don't use glue...out makes a huge mesa and is entirely unneeded overkill
3. Ebay... Under thirty bucks....some local repair shops do this repair fir $20 + parts
Oh yeah. Glass swap is easy(but I do electronic product refurbishing fora living)..take your time as the cables and connectors can be delicate. You must also be careful not to get dust between touchscreen and lcd or fingerprints inside the touchscreen
Ok great. I have found some OEM ones on ebay and that seems like a good direction.
Is there a write-up anywhere of how to use the doublesided sticky tape so that the screen lays down into the frame perfectly?
Thanks for your reply!!

To apply tape I
1.remove old adhesive from frame
2.remove protective plastic from touchscreen (lcd side)
3.lay touchscreen on table finger side (the side that faces out) down
4.place strips of adhesive (double stick tape) onto touchscreen black border region (leave aprox 0.2mm gap from visable area)....do not cover flash, front cam or light sensor areas (if applicable)
5.place touchscreen with lcd side down
6.you can now user razor blade to trim excess along the the edge of touchscreen
I have never doe a n1...only mytouch4g and hd2 but I am sure it is practically the same
Dust is not much of am issue....you will probably introduce more dust trying to clean our blow out the dust....you can buy that antistatic air spray (this may be helpful but but needed if carful)
Also make sure you get the right one. There is the OLED and the LCD one...
You can see which you have from the back of yours (not sure if there is another way to find out) I bought the wrong one for mine so if you need the LCD one, drop me a line...

[Q] Display scratched / broken solution?

Hello. Like 1 week ago i had an exam and we did put phones in a class.I finished exam,i took phone and i went home. After 4-5 hours, i was using my phone and i rotated it to be in landscape and i saw that display is scratched / broken.Possible to be scratched because i feel a line on top phone (not on display) near samsung watermark,or possible to be scratched + broken.Let's say that is a scratch. In that day when i saw it,this scratch was up to half the screen in the diagonal. After 1-2 days, this scratch went until bottom left (in diagonal) lol. So,I'm thinking that is broken, but I'm not sure because it feel just like a scratch. The display is working fine,i don't have any problems.
So,my question is,is there any solution to make scratch "invisible",to dissapear?I saw on youtube some videos with i**** or other phones, but i didnt tried,in one of the videos was used banana lol.I won't buy another screen,i think it will cost around 100€...I wanted to sell my phone for like 100€.But now with that scratch...
PS: If i could find the guy who did this...I will request him 250€ (the amount which i paid for s advance),i will broke his phone and i will punch him
Rob, there's no real method to remove a scratch or fix a broken glass... The only option available is to change the touch screen part (dangerous for display if you are not expert) or the whole assembly (touch screen+display+middle body)
I remember once I had "Displex" paste, really fixed scratches but it's only for plastic (like non-touch phones), basically is a polish paste (don't use on glass, otherwise will be full of scratches)
My advice is: punch him if you find who did this

Unfortunately that is not a scratch but a crack. Our display is composed of 4 layers. Display, touch, silicon, gorilla glass. Your glass is cracked. Fact is that you can buy glass really cheap (10e) but technology/tools (needed to remove and apply silicon) to replace it is not cheap. You could try to find out if anyone in your city does this kind of repair but I doubt that they will charge less than 50e. Good thing is that crack will not affect function of your phone in future, but obviously you cannot sell it for 100e any more.

Cracked screen

Well I finally did it. I busted the screen on my g flex. Its not bad. Just half a dozen tiny cracks. Can't feel them and can't see them with the screen on.
My question is had anyone replaced their screen yet?
And....
All I see on the web is LCD n digitizer together. I didn't damage the LCD. I only cracked the Digitizer / top layer of glass. Can I buy and /or replace just the digitizer only and not the LCD?

Only times I've seen the digitizers alone are iPhones and Samsung phones, but how on earth did you manage a crack on the flex? The angle would have to be perfect at the exact moment the planets aligned.

Had mine for 2 days and dropped it from 2 feet cracked my flex. Pretty bad too.
I replaced it shortly after. And no, they only come together.

I know I can't believe it broke too. I show off its durability by tossing it out in front of me on the ground. And in almost 2 years I haven't broken one yet.
That the main reason I haven't used my upgrade is I can't see buying a phone that can break when I thought I had one that wouldn't break. But looks like I'm gonna scoop up one of these. https://youtu.be/rPgPC9C3xwY

If the touch panel or the touch screen is damaged, but the images on the phone displays as usual, the touch screen panel part is damaged.
Note: replacing only the touch screen is hard to achieve, because the touch screen is integrated into the LCD screen.

Correct. Digitizer can be purchased seperate for less than $20 but is EXTREMELY difficult to replace without also destroying the poled as they are indeed fused together. You could purchase just the screen and digitizer, you'll need a heat gun, guitar pick, a bonding agent and patience. I'd recommend getting the screen, digitizer and frame already assembled (it'll just be a few dollars more) and moving all of your internals on to it. All you'll need is a micro Phillips screwdriver. It's easier, quicker and a more long term solution, not to mention it'll put your Flex back in mint condition as it's an all new housing. Total invested will be less than $100 bucks including beer. Good luck should you decide to go through with it, it's surprisingly easy.
Source: I do micro electronic repair and have replaced screens on dozens of makes/ models including the LG Flex.
I'd just buy a replacement display-itizer assembly from eBay (~$70), pry it apart and gluge it to the frame with 3m ultra thin bonding tape.
Total cost of repair, including tools (screw drivers, tape, spludger) is under $90
I've been thinking of buying a replacement myself, just in case.
Plus, there's one I've found without the LG logo, looks much cleaner.
I've separated them before. And re assembled in the restroom with the shower on high heat to create steam. Keeps down the dust. But I believe @ $62 replacing the whole thing is the way to go.
hi there. where was the flex screen parts at for $62 ? thanks
Anyone feel like making a few bucks, I have one with some burn in and would pay someone to replace my screen on my LG G Flex. Not worth it maybe at todays prices, might just buy a new one? Thoughts?

yes I bought the lcd/digitizer/frame all together, its under 90 bucks, real easy to put together , sure you could get the individual parts cheaper but its too much fuss to put together.

Cracked screen & bezel

So I bought this Mi Mix dirt cheap because it had a cracked screen and the bezel is cracked also. Where’s a good place to get replacement parts. I’ve heard of isssues with the lcd and ambient light sensors. Can someone point me in the right direction? The lcd is fine on my phone but the glass is cracked. Is it possible to replace the glass or is it just easier to replace the whole assembly?

How much did you pay?
Mi Mix - Epic Pro
Replacing whole unit would be easier but costlier , replacing glass is cheaper but not easy, you'll need a lot of patience if your are fixing it on your own(or if some expert agrees on doing it for ya might be a plus point), you'll need special adhesive to bind glass to screen, most people use some sort of thin thread to remove glass from LCD, I have seen few people replacing AMOLED panels which are even more thinner then the IPS on Mi Mix but its not easy process lots of things should be kept in mind ,and you might end up breaking your display
1*See if someone is buying that display then sell it and buy a whole new assembly
2*If 1 is no help then you'll be left with 2 options replace glass or assembly
Either way you can give replacing glass a try if you get the glass cheaper
Replacing whole assembly is your last resort
Check you jerryrigeverthing channel on YouTube he did disassemble Mi Mix and he also replaced glass on a samsung oled panel

Paid $100 for the 6GB + 256GB one. Though the $100 came from recycling soda pop cans which were given to me. So in the end I didn’t pay out of pocket for it.

Last time I checked the full assembly plus frame cost upwards of 200$, not including service costs of course.
Which means that fixing up that beast is still going to be pretty pricy.
If you have the tools, skills and patience to do it though then that's definitely a goal worth pursuing.
Keep us updated on your progress, I love following DIY projects like these.
Looks like vopmart sells the bezel for 90 and the screen assembly for 100 + 10 for frame. Hmmm. What to do... Gotta check out some more teardowns to see if I want to do it myself. But from what I can see it doesn’t look to bad. I’m just not sure about the optic glue + glass & ips panel.
Little update on this. Went to the local cellphone repair shop and asked a quote for a lcd assembly replacement. I was quoted for $120 total (parts & labor) for full assembly replacement. Which also includes lifetime warranty on the screen as long as the screen is available. The repair guy was looking for screens on eBay including the frame for the lcd. Seems pretty damn good if you ask me and I wouldn't have to do the dirty work. But thing is I don't know how well they do repairs. Also, I forgot to ask for a quote for the bezel.

There are some teardowns on YouTube, quite easy with a few hurdles, the hardest part for me was removing the battery, there are tabs you pull that's supposed to help but they just snapped on me. If you're lucky it might work if not don't rush it or the battery will puncture and you will need a new one, the copy batteries are crap. Watch the teardowns a few times and you will get it. AliExpress was where I got mine there are loads of sellers with them. You will need some b7000 glue as the replacements don't have adhesive on them. The glue is very cheap and the screen come with tools.
Where did you buy it?

You need to be very selective when buying the LCD. Almost all of them do not have the oleophobic coating turning the screen into a smudgefest within minutes. I replaced my coated screen with an uncoated screen initially and it was disgusting. Luckily it was defective so I returned it for my money back and then went to Aliexpress. This vendor has the only coated version I know of:
https://de.aliexpress.com/item/For-...61ef335&transAbTest=ae803_2&priceBeautifyAB=0
Sorry for the lengthy URL. He claims to have the coating and he acutually delivers on the claim. Another important factor is the middle frame which is included and already attached to the screen. Man screens come without it and you then need to pry the old one off and glue it to the new screen. Often the glue is not strong enough and the diesplay will lift out of the phones body. Sure, it is more expensive than other options, but worth every cent. The display is fee of defects, sits flush with the ceramic frame and makes the phone look pristine.

This is all true, mine is smudge magnet, I can live with it but annoying everything else is ok, I clean the screen with solution then use liquid car Wax to add a bit of a coating against fingerprints, 3 coats of car Wax and a good polish off. Helps a little bit with smudges. It feels really smooth afterwards.
