Hi,
Ive just bought a used Galaxy Note running Stock 2.3.6 (N7000XXLC1 Kernel an N7000XXLB2 baseband) and want to put the latest jellybean rom on.
Ive read through lots of threads about the brick warning and so on, i just want to know how to go from 2.3.6 and have it rooted and cwm on and the latest 4.1 leak or a modified 4.1
Could somebody please tell me the steps to do it as dont want to brick it and this 2.3.6 is rubbish
Matt
Hello!
I've rooted my Note like this:
#1
Get the original software (like N7000XXLRU - the file is 914Mb and it is a *.md5 file. ) and odin (Odin3 v1.87), install it in odin...how?
Open odin and put the file in PDA.
Option in odin leave alone (Auto Reboot & F. Reset Time; are selected)
Put Note in download mode: Volume Down Key + Home Key + Power Key; then Volume up key to continue
Connect the phone to computer
Odin recognize the phone and you will see it on COM port
Click Start
After several minutes the phone will turn on.
Now you have a original sw on your phone, and believe me this sw is GREAT...but if you want more...
#2
Root you phone
Described in this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)
I used ''1A.Root + safe kernel + advance recovery''
Just read carefully (will write it down)
Visit this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
And download kernel in zip format according ROM you are having on device (just look for XXLRU-VDI; PhilZ-cwm6 v3.5 with CWM 6.0.1.8)
Copy downloaded file to Ext SD card to root directory (or any folder you make; I have ''A_ROOT'' for this things)
Reboot into recovery (Volume Up Key + Home Button + Power Key)
Select install(update) zip from ext SD card (Install zip >> Choose zip from sdcard; and click on the *.zip file)
select '[your downloaded kerenel].zip' which you have copied to Ext card above
Reboot device
Now you will have Root + safe kernel
And your phone is rooted now. You can have all the programs that work only when your phone is rooted (Titanium Backup, Root Uninstaller, Root Browser Lite, ...)
#3
Your phone is now ready to install all Android Development ROMs
Read each post ''How to flash'' it is easy
For instance I like stock rom and love 4.1.2, so i have sw from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970626
Example:
Save *.zip on your SD/EXT Card (Ultimate N7000 XXLSA JellyBean 4.1.2 v5)
Restart in CWMR (Volume Up Key + Home Button + Power Key)
Be sure you're on SAFE KERNEL, then you can wipe (jes you are - on PhilZ-cwm6)
Full wipe /data/factory reset /cache and dalvik (dalvik is in advanced option)
Flash the ROM (Install zip >> Choose zip from sdcard; and click on the *.zip file)
Wait some minute until your phone boot!
You are done. That's all.
I've never had any problems with any of the ROMs. You can do the #3 1000 times and nothing will go wrong. Just remember to do a back up in CWM, when you have a rom that works great for you and you like. So if anything happens and you phone is stuck in ''samsung'' sing, you can go in CMW and restore it.
I hope it helps and I didn't forget anything.
Thanks so much for posting. I followed all the instructions and it worked fine. I have however gone and installed a 4.0.4 rom after using 4.1 for a bit and finding it too juddery.
Thanks again
Matt
No problem.
You can wait for the official firmware release and then everything will work 100%.
Since he didnt i hit thanks

PLEASE BE CAREFUL ... THIS RECOVERY HASNT BEEN TESTED "FULLY"...ONLY WIPE CACHE AND DALVIK CACHE , INSTALL ZIP IS TESTED
PLEASE BACKUP YOUR DATA AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF THE FIRMWARE BEFORE PROCEEDING..HAPPY FLASHING!
Why twrp ? Why not a pre-rooted firmware which will not void warranty?
Ans : TWRP has many more functionality than stock recovery ! Rooting means to playing around with your device. If some thing goes wrong it you have to flash the whole firmware again instead, backup your ROM through CWM and if something goes wrong restore your backup AS SIMPLE AS THAT !
All you have to do is follow my instructions :
STEP 1 :
-Download and setup ADB drivers for your device
can be found here Drivers !
STEP 2 :
-Download the recovery from ---> Link
-Download odin 3 Link
-Turn of your device and go to odin mode [ Vol down + power + home button (all at the same time) ] release it when you see Galaxy S5 Minilogo
-Press vol up to confirm
STEP 3 :
-Now that you are in odin mode connect your device via usb cable !
-Now open Odin3 3.09 that you have downloaded.
-If there is a pop-up like Installing ADB drivers let it get finished it is usually updates !!!!
-Make sure the COM : xx (xx is usb port number it can be any number so dont worry about it,just verify COM is lit up)
-Select the recovery (Link in STEP 2) ! Now select AP and browse to where you have .tar file and select it
MAKE SURE U UNTICK THE AUTO-REBOOT BUTTON
-Click Start
ONCE IT SAYS PASS ...REMOVE THE BATTERY ...THEN RE-INSERT THE BATTERY AND BOOT INTO RECOVERY USING VOL UP + HOME + POWER BUTTON
HOW TO ROOT THE DEVICE :
-Download SuperSu (obviously the latest one) from here ------> Click here !
-Copy that to internal sd card
-Power off your device and press vol up + power + home button (all at once)
-Select install zip from sdcard --->choose zip from sdcard ---> scroll down and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.xx.zip
Done ! And you are ready to go
BUGS
DATA SHOWN TWICE IN ADVANCED WIPE ... WILL BE FIXED IN THE NEXT BUILD

NOTE : IF ANY OPTION DOESNT WORK FOR U ... TURN OFF UR PHONE AND THEN BOOT INTO RECOVERY

Thanks for the mention, you're most welcome, bro!
Thank you very much. Let me confirm if it is for g800h dual sim phone.
My G800H/DS works fine with both sim cards -- sim manager, sms, calls, everything is ok.

In step 3 how to select the recovery file?
I see PDA button. How to select AP. where is it in odin?

it depends on the version of odin your using
if your odin has PDA .. then put the recovery there (v 3.07 and before )
if your odin has AP ... Then put the recovery there (v3.09 onwards of odin)
Thank you very much. Done.

Thank you! Flashed now and works perfect!
Works fine on my G800H/DS. It wont write to the external SD (64GB eXFat) but otherwise it works like a champ.
hello rutvikrvr,
2 short questions.. is it possible to adjust the time settings for different time zones (eg +1 for europe / vienna) ?
If i make a backup to the internal sd i cannot see any content in the TWRP folder with eg. es file explorer, only when i boot with recovery and use the present file manager.. is it a bug or intention?
Thanks!

In advanced settings you should get an option to change the time zone.... And for the second thing... If es file explorer doesn't support reading .ext4 files .. Then it won't show up

Yes, i found this setting - BUT if I set the time zone to UTC +1 (Berlin, Brussels, Paris) - the correct time zone for vienna too - the time is shown as 8:43 pm - but it is now 7:43 pm - so i think the winter / summertime is not considered?
The second thing.. in the TWRP folder it is a folder called backup and in this also a folder.. if i copy the whole TWRP Folder with the file manager from the recovery to the external sd - i CAN see the whole content from the TWRP folder with ES File Explorer .. on the internal sd not.. Strange

I feel like this should apply to the 870a as well, but don't quote me on that just yet.
Anybody want to verify this?

to bad there is not a way to get one with root and deodex, like the 900T has.

It just won't happen, unless marshmallow has an exploit in itself. Now I've heard that marshmallow will only work with the marshmallow bootloader, so no more downgrade opportunities if you update.
It's all in or out now for us, I'm thinking all in and hope like hell for a root exploit.

My 900T ive been using on at&t is running marshmallow and its rooted, i even put TWRP on it. My at&t s5 sits in a drawer collecting dust now. i realize that the at&t variants are encrypted but there has to be some way to find out if MM has any kind of vulnerability.

Well sure, but it was literally just released, and not even the official release, so it'll take some time for those exploits to be found. Then, those exploits will hopefully allow for privilege escalation, or they're useless. I have high hopes, being it's a new version, there should be plenty of vulnerabilities, at least until patches are released.
EDIT
I'd like to add that I have high hopes, because most marshmallow versions have obtained root at this point, I just found out they achieved root on both the Verizon and AT&T variants of the s7 and the edge. I'm really hoping those exploits can be applied to our phones.

I'd really like a mirror for the PE3 update, I am unable to access it from anywhere. I'm on an Active, but was going to guinea pig for everybody to see if it would work on our phones. So, if anybody has the file, would you be so kind as to share a mirror?
Thanks!!!
EDIT
Finally got it to download, once it's done, I'll give it a shot and report back. I might wait until morning to post results, but Active users, stay tuned!
Hey some of you guys could really help out with the mirrors my upload speed sucks

The word is you cannot flash marshmallow without the marshmallow bootloader
Effectively locking you out of root.
I'm waiting to see if someone can root marshmallow for this phone currently on lollipop

If you take this update can you downgrade back to PA2 using Odin?
No once you flash this you cannot go back to PA2 which is a lollipop based rom. PE3 is Marshmallow and has its own Marshmallow based bootloader. You will probably end up with a boot loop if you tried to flash PA2 over PE3.
Been waiting a while for this! Thanks! Is USB 3.0 MTP file transfer working for anyone? Can't seem to select the option, the device just defaults to USB 2.0.
update: nvm its working now.

Must wait a while. Hopefully someone can. They did it for the S6 and S7. What is so tough about the G900A S5? I won't do anything until there is root, recovery and custom roms. I am fine on Rooted OC4 TMS5 3.0...for now...

How do I complete this part in Odin? I haven't used it in quite some time. Do I need to un-rar the PA2 update or just use as is? Do I need to put the file in all the boxes your listed (AP, BL, CSC, CP) and then tick the checkboxes next to them? Any other options of things that need to be set in Odin before I hit start?
FYI: I am currently on PA1.
Thanks!

Changelog:
[Sat, May 13 2017]: Initial Release
----------------------------
Screenshots:
Requirements for installing AXES Rom:
1- A Human Brain
2- A PC/Laptop running Windows OS
3- Samsung USB-C Cable (USB-C to USB-A) which obviously comes with your phone in it's retail box.
4- Patience & Time at hand
Make sure to backup your files, contacts and so on before attempting to tamper with your device unofficially as the data residing in your phone's storage will be wiped!
Instructions on installing AXES Rom:
1- Go to your devices Settings ---> About device ---> Software info and tap on it's "Build number" several times in a row till a message appears saying that you have unlocked Developers mode.
Go back one step and you'll find a new option defined as: "Developers mode".
Without further ado select Developers mode in Settings and turn on: "OEM unlock".
2- Make sure the above step is fulfilled before you move on to this step. This guide is case sensitive and your device is on the line in case you do not follow the necessary steps provided in the right sequence and way.
Turn Off your phone completely and press and hold it's Power Button along with it's Volume Down Button & Home Button to enter: "Download Mode".
After the Samsung phone name logo, you will see a blue screen with a warning sign.
Proceed by simply pressing the Volume Up button once as seen on the screen.
Now you are in the: "Download Mode" aka: "Odin Mode" for flashing firmware files using the Samsung flashing tool called Odin.
3- In this step we will be attempting to Flash a Custom Recovery entitled: "TWRP" which stands for: "Team Win Recovery Project".
To do so we will need to download the Odin Windows Application as described above in Step 2 for flashing the custom recovery file.
WARNING: Flashing a custom recovery to your device will trip the Knox warranty bit on your phone. Check with your mobile provider to see if they will still cover warranty on Knox bit triggered devices. If you understand this risk, continue on.
Odin v3.12.3 Download Link:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
You'll find the link in the attachments section below the thread.
TWRP Recovery v3.0.2.0 (ONLY for SM-A520F/DS) Download Link:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120710156
Once you've download both files from the given links above, extract the folder: "Odin3 v3.12.3" from the Odin3 v3.12.3.zip file to your desktop and move the: "A5-SM-A520F-TWRP-3.0.2.0.tar" file to the Odin folder you just extracted.
Run the Odin3 Application within that folder.
Click on the: "Options" Tab after Log and uncheck: "Auto Reboot" and make sure that: "F. Reset Time" is checked.
Go back to the: "Log" Tab and click on the: "AP" button and select the: "A5-SM-A520F-TWRP-3.0.2.0.tar" file you just moved to the Odin folder in your desktop.
In order for Odin to detect that your phone's connected to your PC/Laptop make sure you have the Samsung Usb Driver for Mobile Phones installed onto your PC/Laptop.
If you already have it installed then simply skip obtaining it from the download link below.
Samsung Usb Driver for Mobile Phones Download Link:
https://yadi.sk/d/uubiaKw6j8bug
Afterwards connect your phone to your PC/Laptop using the Samsung USB-C Cable.
Once Odin displays that your device is connected, hit the: "Start" button below and wait for the file to be done flashing. You will notice above a green progress bar filling up towards the end and also your phone's screen will display a white progress bar to go along with it.
4- Odin will display a green: "Done" box above when it's done flashing TWRP Recovery.
Afterwards we will reboot our phone normally by simply pressing and holding the Volume Up Button and Power Button for a few seconds (around 10 sec.) and then we instantly press and hold the Volume Up Button along with the Power Button and Home Button before we see the Samsung Galaxy A5 Bootlogo in order to successfully boot to TWRP Recovery.
5- You will reach a TWRP Recovery screen asking you if you want to allow system modifications. Swipe right and enable modifications and select: "Don't show this again".
6- For the Internal Storage or Data to work in TWRP Recovery we will have to go to: "Wipe" then "Format Data" (not advanced wipe) and type: "yes".
Go to: "Reboot" and select: "Recovery".
7- Your phone will reboot to TWRP Recovery once again.
If you have the Rom zip file available in your External SD Card then skip Part 1 of this step and move on to Part 2.
Part 1: While running TWRP Recovery on your device, connect your phone to your PC/Laptop using the usb cable and copy the Rom zip file to your phone's Internal Storage.
Part 2: Finally go to: "Install", select storage and select: "Internal" or "External storage" wherever you copied and stored the AXES Rom zip file.
Locate the Rom in either storages, select it and swipe to the right to flash it.
Wait for the Rom to be flashed entirely and then select the reboot option.
Rebooting to the system will require about 5 minutes so be patient and don't forget to report back to us with your experience!

How to Root Note 9 with Magisk on Android 10 (Q) without Custom Recovery (Eg.. TWRP)
This method will work with most of the latest Samsung devices running Android 9/10. (Tested and Working on Galaxy Note 9 (Exynos) with Android 10 Q).
WARNINGS: I am not responsible for any damage made. Your device warranty will be void. Do it at your own risk.
Warning: Before Installing Magisk
Installing Magisk WILL trip KNOX
Installing Magisk for the first time REQUIRES a full data wipe. Backup before continue.
You have to have your bootloader unlocked before following the instructions
REQUIREMENTS: (Basic knowledge about android rooting.)
Stock Firmware
Odin v3.14.1
Magisk Manager (You can find in Downloads section of Magisk Thread, I used Magisk Manager v7.5.1)
STEP 1 Unlocking Bootloader (This may need to Wipe your Data/Factory Reset.)
Enable Developer Mode on the Galaxy Note 9
To Enable Developer Mode Open Settings option.
Under Settings option, select About phone, then choose Software Information.
Scroll down the screen and tap Build number several times until you see a message that says "Developer mode has been enabled".
Tap on the Back button and you will see the Developer options menu under Settings, and select Developer options.
Toggle the OEM Unlock option on
Then tap on the Turn On button
STEP 2 Patching and Flashing (This may need to Wipe your Data/Factory Reset.)
Download the firmware for your device.
Unzip the firmware and copy the AP tar file to your device. It is normally named as AP_[device_model_sw_ver].tar.md5
Install the latest Magisk Manager
In Magisk Manager: Tap Install → Install → Select and Patch a File and select the AP tar file.
Magisk Manager will patch the whole firmware file and store the output to [Internal Storage]/Download/magisk_patched.tar
Copy the patched file to your PC with adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched.tar. Do not use MTP as it is reported to corrupt files. (I have copied with MTP)
Reboot to download mode, and flash magisk_patched.tar as AP in Odin, together with the BL, CP and HOME_CSC files (I have used CSC instead of HOME_CSC). (Never flash only an AP file, as Odin can shrink your /data file-system if you do). Important: Uncheck “Auto Reboot” in Odin Options!
Magisk is now successfully flashed to your device! But there are still several steps before you can properly use the device.
STEP 3 Wipe data/factory reset (This may need to Wipe your Data/Factory Reset. : D)
We now want to boot into the stock recovery to factory reset our device. Full data wipe is mandatory! Do not skip this step.
Press Power + Volume Down to exit download mode. As soon as the screen turns off, immediately press the combo key to boot to recovery (e.g. on the Note 9 it is Power + Bixby + Volume Up). Since we want to boot into stock recovery, continue pressing the volume up button until you see the stock recovery screen. (I had to release power button when Note 9 logo appeared).
Use volume buttons to navigate through the stock recovery menu, and the power button to select an option. Choose Wipe data/factory reset to wipe the data of the device.
This time, we can finally boot to the system with Magisk. Select Reboot system now, and immediately press the combo key to recovery. After seeing the bootloader warning screen, release all buttons so it can boot to the system. (Just select Select Reboot system now)
The device will automatically reboot for the first time it boots. This is completely normal and done by design.
After the device is booted up, do the usual initial setup. The following steps will need an internet connection.
You shall see Magisk Manager in your app drawer; if not, manually install the Magisk Manager APK and continue to the next step. The app would be a stub and it shall automatically upgrade to the full Magisk Manager when you open it.
Magisk Manager will ask to do additional setups. Let it do its job and the app will automatically reboot your device.
Voila! Enjoy Magisk

Press the Volume Up button to bypass the splash screen and enter the Odin Mode

You will get your device MPT drive in my computer, Copy Magisk Canary zip file and Dm-Verity & ForceEncrypt Disabler v02.02.2020 zip file to your device.
Now you have to flash Magisk Canary in TWRP click Install and select Magisk Canary zip and start flashing. Then flash ForceEncrypt Disabler in TWRP. (If you get the mount error whioe installing ForceEncrypt Disabler then just ignore it and move to next step).

Currently I am not using this System-as-root method to root my device because working version of Dm-Verity & ForceEncrypt Disabler is released so I am using TWRP method to root my device so I can't test secure folder on this rooting method. Now my device is rooted with Magisk via TWRP and secure folder is working without any issue so I think it will work with this method too.

Hello
Thanks to the authors of this tutorial, and others on XDA, I completed a detailed procedure to Root the Galaxy Note 9 SM-N960F under Android 10 with the Recovery Custom TWRP which allows the backup and restoration of all partitions.
This procedure may seem long because it is very detailed because there are very important points not to miss so that the partitions are not locked by Android 10.
I hope the French / English translation is good because I am very bad in English

Here is the new location for CSC feature.xml "/odm/etc/omc/XXX- your country code/conf/cscfeature.xml".
You have to Decode / Encode CSC files use OmcTextDecoder .
Many of the old CSC features don't work on Samsung Android Q
